<div>In a significant expansion of Indo-Pacific security cooperation, Japan and Australia have announced joint initiatives to test standoff hypersonic missiles and co-develop a cutting-edge high-energy laser detection system.</div>
<br />
<div>The announcement was made at Parliament House in Canberra following bilateral talks between Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles.</div>

<h3>Standoff Missile Testing on Australian Soil</h3>
<div>Under the new accord, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) plan to conduct test launches of long-range projectiles, including hypersonic missiles, using Australian firing ranges. Defence Minister Koizumi hailed the arrangement as a major operational shift for Japan's defense posture.</div>
<br />
<blockquote>
<div><strong>Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi:</strong> "If the Japan Self-Defense Forces are able to conduct test launches of standoff missiles, such as hypersonic missiles, in Australia, it would be a groundbreaking development. We will therefore accelerate discussions toward realising this objective."</div>
</blockquote>
<h3>Launch of 'Project Boobook'</h3>
<div>The ministers also unveiled a joint defense technology initiative named <strong>Project Boobook</strong>—named after the Australian owl known for night vision. The project centers on high-energy laser systems designed to optically detect and counter airborne and surface threats across littoral and ground combat platforms.</div>
<br />
<h3>Strategic Context and Regional Realignment</h3>
<div>The deepening alliance reflects a broader realignment among regional middle powers—including Japan, Australia, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines—seeking to strengthen defense self-reliance amid escalating regional tensions and shifting American global commitments.</div>
<br />
<div>The missile and laser initiatives build on an existing $6 billion naval agreement under which Australia will acquire Japanese-built warships over the next decade to secure key trade routes across the Indian and Pacific Oceans.</div>
