Trump Cites India’s Voter ID System in Push for SAVE America Act

Donald Trump has cited India’s voter identification system and low postal-ballot usage while pushing tougher US election rules. Here is what he wants to change.

US President Donald Trump has pointed to India’s voter-identification system and limited use of postal ballots while renewing his push for the SAVE America Act, bringing the world’s largest democracy into America’s election-law debate.

US President Donald Trump has cited India’s election system as an example while calling for tougher voter-identification and citizenship-verification rules in the United States.

Trump referred to India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election, in which more than 646 million votes were cast, and highlighted the country’s voter-identification requirements and comparatively limited use of postal ballots. He used the comparison while urging the US Congress to pass the proposed SAVE America Act.

What does the SAVE America Act propose?

The legislation would require documentary proof of US citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and would require eligible photo identification when voting in a federal election. The bill also sets identification procedures for absentee voting.

Why is Trump talking about India?

India gives Trump a powerful scale comparison: hundreds of millions of voters participate under a broadly common national election framework. But one important clarification is necessary. Indian voters must establish their identity at the polling station, yet an Election Commission-issued EPIC card is not the only acceptable document. The Election Commission allows several alternative recognised photo IDs, including Aadhaar, passport, driving licence and PAN card.

Mail voting is another flashpoint

Trump has also highlighted India’s relatively limited use of postal ballots compared with the United States. Mail and absentee voting play a much larger role in American elections, with rules varying by state. The administration’s separate attempts to tighten mail-voting procedures have also faced legal challenges.

What happens next?

The issue is likely to remain politically and legally contentious ahead of the November 2026 US midterm elections. Trump’s praise does not mean he is proposing to copy India’s entire election system; he is invoking particular features—especially identity verification and limited postal voting—to support his domestic election-law agenda.
