Chhattisgarh AI Mission Explained: Who Will Get Training and Where Rs 500 Crore Will Go

Chhattisgarh's Rs 500-crore AI Mission plans 100 data labs, five centres and training for 6 lakh students. See benefits, gaps and next steps.

Chhattisgarh has approved a Rs 500-crore Artificial Intelligence Mission with an ambitious promise: move AI beyond a few urban institutions and build skills, research capacity, startups and digital government services across the state.

The mission was cleared by the state cabinet on August 5 and is planned for five years. The headline numbers are large, but the next phase - locations, eligibility, curriculum, partner institutions and annual targets - will determine whether students in Raipur, Bastar, Surguja and smaller towns receive meaningful access.

What has been approved?

Rs 500 crore over five years for the Chhattisgarh State Artificial Intelligence Mission.

100 AI data labs across the state.

Five AI Centres of Excellence for research, training and innovation.

AI training for 6 lakh students and 1.5 lakh government employees.

Support for more than 300 AI startups.

Development of more than 50 AI-enabled government services.

The plan is aligned with the Government of India's IndiaAI Mission and is intended to combine skill development with digital governance and a startup ecosystem.

Important: the mission has been approved, but a statewide student application process, district-wise lab list and detailed training calendar have not yet been publicly announced.

Who is expected to benefit?

Students are the largest named beneficiary group, with a target of 6 lakh trainees. Government employees form the second major group, with 1.5 lakh officials expected to receive AI training so departments can use data and automation more effectively.

Recent reporting also indicates a focus on tribal students through AI-enabled learning modules in government schools, open schools and colleges, along with proposed AI and robotics labs. For Chhattisgarh, that inclusion test will be crucial because many students in remote and forest districts face weak connectivity, limited devices and shortages of specialised teachers.

What could the 100 AI data labs do?

An AI data lab is more than a computer room. At its best, it provides computing access, curated datasets, software tools, mentors and project space where students, researchers, departments and startups can build and test applications.

The state has not yet published a location map or operating model for all 100 labs. That leaves several questions: Will every district receive one? Will labs be based in schools, colleges, ITIs or administrative institutions? Who will maintain equipment and data? Will local-language and tribal-language datasets be included?

What are the five Centres of Excellence?

Centres of Excellence are expected to be higher-level hubs for research, advanced training, industry collaboration and problem-solving. They could support projects in agriculture, mining safety, healthcare, forest management, education and citizen services - sectors closely connected to Chhattisgarh's economy and geography.

However, the cabinet announcement does not by itself identify host institutions or selection criteria. Those details should be treated as pending until the state issues formal orders.

Will the mission create jobs?

The mission can improve employment prospects if training is linked to real projects, internships, startup funding and employer demand. Supporting more than 300 startups could create local opportunities in software, data services, language technology, agritech, healthtech and government technology.

Training certificates alone will not guarantee jobs. Course quality, internet access, mentors, placement partnerships and the ability to build demonstrable projects will matter more than enrolment numbers.

What should students do now?

Do not pay any private agent claiming to offer guaranteed admission under the state AI Mission.

Watch official school, college, ITI, higher-education and skill-development notices for eligibility and application details.

Build basic foundations in mathematics, coding, data literacy and responsible AI while implementation begins.

Students in remote districts should ask institutions whether device access, offline modules and local-language support will be provided.

Startups should wait for a formal scheme document before assuming the size, form or eligibility rules of financial support.

The next five updates to track

1. District-wise locations and host institutions for the 100 AI data labs.

2. Names and specialisations of the five Centres of Excellence.

3. Student eligibility, application method, course duration and certification rules.

4. Startup-support guidelines, selection process, funding size and mentoring partners.

5. A public dashboard showing money spent, people trained, projects completed and services deployed.

FAQs

What is the budget of the Chhattisgarh AI Mission?

The approved outlay is Rs 500 crore over five years.

How many students will receive AI training?

The mission has set a target of 6 lakh students, along with 1.5 lakh government employees.

Can students apply now?

A single statewide application process had not been publicly announced as of August 19. Students should wait for official institution or department notices.
