Army Veterans Criticise Tourist’s Remarks on Soldiers

Army veterans, including former Army Chief VK Singh, criticised remarks made by a tourist in a viral Ladakh video and urged respect for soldiers serving in sensitive border areas.

Former Indian Army officers have criticised remarks made by a tourist in a viral video from Minamarg in Ladakh, where she is seen confronting security personnel over restrictions on tourist movement.

The video has triggered a debate on the conduct of tourists in sensitive border areas, with former Army officers stressing that criticism of soldiers should be based on facts and should not disregard the risks faced by personnel deployed in such regions.

Viral Video Sparks Debate

The video reportedly shows a woman tourist questioning security personnel at a barricade and objecting to restrictions on movement. She is heard referring to the restrictions and saying, “We are Gen Z, we’ll not tolerate this nonsense.”

The footage subsequently circulated widely on social media, prompting reactions from several retired military officers.

VK Singh Defends Soldiers

General VK Singh (Retd), former Army Chief and currently Mizoram Governor, criticised what he described as unfair blame and disrespect towards soldiers.

Singh said the armed forces stand between the country and those who seek to harm it, adding that the Minamarg incident highlighted the courage, sacrifice and vigilance of soldiers deployed in difficult conditions. He said criticism should be based on facts rather than emotion or sweeping accusations.

KJS Dhillon Reacts

Former Chinar Corps Commander Lieutenant General KJS Dhillon (Retd) also responded to the controversy.

Dhillon defended the soldiers stationed in the region and reminded the tourist that civilians are able to visit such areas because military personnel continue to guard them. He also criticised the language used towards the security personnel and urged people to remain respectful.

Satish Dua Raises Security Concerns

Another former Chinar Corps Commander, Lieutenant General Satish Dua (Retd), also criticised the remarks.

Dua pointed to the sensitive nature of Ladakh as a border region and highlighted the sacrifices made by soldiers deployed there. He argued that restrictions imposed by security personnel in such areas need to be understood in the context of operational and national-security requirements.

Ladakh’s Sensitive Terrain

Ladakh has strategically important areas along India's northern borders, and movement restrictions can be imposed in locations where military operations, security deployments or local conditions require additional precautions.

The controversy has therefore brought renewed attention to the need for tourists visiting border regions to follow instructions issued by security forces and local authorities.

Debate Over Tourist Conduct

The viral footage has generated reactions online, with supporters of the Army emphasising the difficult conditions under which soldiers operate, while the broader issue of how tourists should respond to restrictions in sensitive areas has also come under discussion.

The veterans' comments have largely focused on ensuring that legitimate grievances or disagreements do not turn into personal attacks on soldiers serving in challenging border environments.
