<h3><strong>China’s Robot Boom Accelerates</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">China’s humanoid robot industry is expanding at remarkable speed, with companies showcasing machines capable of dancing, running, boxing, handling objects and performing industrial tasks.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">More than 2,000 robots were displayed at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, highlighting the breadth of China’s robotics ecosystem. The exhibits included humanoids, quadruped machines, crab-like robots and other experimental systems.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The scale of the demonstrations has strengthened the perception that China is emerging as a major force in humanoid robotics.</p>
<h3><strong>Viral Videos Fuel Expectations</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Humanoid robots have increasingly become a fixture on social media, with videos showing machines mimicking human movements, folding clothes, cleaning, dancing and running.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing described the industry's progress as approaching a possible “ChatGPT moment”, referring to a stage when robots could potentially enter unfamiliar environments and perform different tasks after receiving simple voice or text instructions.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">However, the growing number of impressive demonstrations has also raised an important question: how close are these machines to becoming dependable tools rather than exhibition attractions?</p>
<h3><strong>Investment Drives Rapid Growth</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">China’s robotics push is being supported by substantial investment and government policy. The industry is backed by an estimated $138 billion in investment in embodied artificial intelligence, according to the source material.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Companies are also setting ambitious commercial targets.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">UBTECH, for example, continues to train its humanoid robots for basic movements and industrial applications. Its Walker S machines remain expensive, but the company has projected deliveries of more than 10,000 units by 2027.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The country's advantage therefore extends beyond individual machines. It includes a large number of competing companies and substantial government support.</p>
<h3><strong>Real-World Tasks Remain Difficult</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The World Robot Conference demonstrated that China's robotics industry is moving beyond entertainment.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Companies including UBTECH and Leju displayed robots designed for practical applications, including moving industrial components, sorting and transporting objects, parcel handling, phone packaging and education.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Yet one demonstration offered a reminder of the industry's limitations.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">A helper robot attempting to fold a shirt reportedly spent several minutes trying to complete the relatively simple task before failing. The incident illustrated the gap between a controlled demonstration and consistent real-world performance.</p>
<h3><strong>Robot Failures Expose Limits</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Other failures have highlighted similar problems.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Some humanoid robots have struggled simply to remain upright, while one machine that appeared to reach speeds comparable to elite human runners continued running until it crashed into a wall. Another high-speed incident ended with a robot falling apart and producing sparks.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Such incidents are more than amusing clips. They demonstrate that mastering one capability does not necessarily mean a robot can safely perform another.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">A machine that can run quickly may still struggle with stopping or navigating. Similarly, successfully folding a shirt once in a controlled environment does not demonstrate that the same robot can perform the task thousands of times without human assistance.</p>
<h3><strong>China Builds Policy Advantage</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">China’s long-term policy direction could prove as important as individual technological breakthroughs.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The country’s 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026-2030 gives significant attention to artificial intelligence and “embodied intelligence”, positioning robotics within a wider economic strategy.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The policy framework links robotics and AI with manufacturing, digital transformation, elderly care, national security and cultural development.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The “AI+” programme also treats artificial intelligence as a cross-sector technology covering industrial development, consumer upgrades, social welfare, governance and international cooperation.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">This could allow Chinese companies to test and deploy robots across a wider range of industries, accelerating the feedback loop between manufacturing, software development and real-world use.</p>
<h3><strong>US Joins the Robotics Race</strong></h3>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The United States is approaching the humanoid robotics race from a different position, with the technology increasingly connected to the wider competition between Washington and Beijing over AI, advanced manufacturing and strategic technologies.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">US robotics companies are exploring applications ranging from border surveillance to military reconnaissance. Foundation, led by Sankaet Pathak, has discussed possible applications for humanoid robots with US Department of Homeland Security officials and has promoted its Phantom MK-I for potential military use.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">At the same time, concerns over dependence on Chinese-made robots are influencing US manufacturing decisions.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">RoboStore, previously a major North American distributor of Unitree robots, is preparing to manufacture its own machines in the United States. The company plans to establish a 66,000-square-foot facility on Long Island and aims to begin commercial production in the first fiscal quarter of 2027.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">China may currently have advantages in manufacturing scale, government support and the number of companies developing humanoids. But the industry's biggest test will be whether those advantages translate into machines that can operate safely, reliably and independently at scale.</p>
<p>For now, China’s robot boom appears far from over. The more difficult question is whether the current surge represents the industry's peak — or merely the beginning of a much steeper climb.</p>]]></content:encoded>
