Kerala is set to observe a four-day holiday from August 25 to August 28, 2026, as the State prepares for the annual Onam celebrations. The festival, one of Kerala’s most important cultural occasions, will see families and communities come together for traditional celebrations across the State.

August 25 marks Uthradam, popularly known as the first day of the main Onam celebrations. The day traditionally precedes Thiruvonam, the most important day of the festival, when households prepare elaborate feasts, decorate their homes with floral designs and participate in cultural traditions.

The four-day holiday period is expected to provide residents an opportunity to travel to their hometowns and celebrate the festival with family members. Onam is observed across Kerala irrespective of religious and social backgrounds and is closely associated with the legendary King Mahabali and the belief that he visits his people during the festival.

Uthradam Marks Festive Preparations

Uthradam traditionally marks the beginning of heightened Onam activity. Markets across Kerala witness increased demand for vegetables, fruits, flowers, traditional clothing and other festive items as families make preparations for Thiruvonam.

The festival is also closely associated with Onam Sadya, a traditional vegetarian feast served on banana leaves. A variety of dishes are prepared for the occasion, making food an important part of the celebrations.

Four-Day Holiday

The State government’s holiday period from August 25 to 28 is expected to facilitate celebrations and family gatherings across Kerala.

The holiday period also typically leads to increased movement of people between cities and villages, with transport services witnessing higher demand during the festival season.

Onam celebrations extend beyond households, with cultural programmes, traditional performances, competitions and community gatherings forming part of the festivities in different parts of the State.

Cultural Significance

Onam is rooted in Kerala’s cultural traditions and the legend of King Mahabali, whose reign is traditionally remembered as a period of prosperity and equality. According to the popular tradition, Mahabali returns to Kerala during Onam, and people welcome him by decorating their homes and celebrating together.

Pookkalam, the traditional floral decoration, is another prominent feature of the festival. Families create colourful flower arrangements outside their homes, while schools, offices and community organisations often organise competitions and cultural events.

Thiruvonam Ahead

While Uthradam begins the final phase of preparations, Thiruvonam remains the central day of the festival. Families traditionally gather for prayers, festive meals and cultural activities.
