A distressing incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district has highlighted the difficulties faced by flood-affected villagers after a deceased man’s body had to be transported on a makeshift raft made by tying drums together. The incident was reported from Rouli village, where floodwaters had made the regular route from the hospital to the deceased’s home inaccessible. 

According to a report by The Times of India, villagers were left with little option but to improvise a floating platform using tied drums. The body was placed on the makeshift raft and taken through the floodwaters so it could be brought home. The incident has drawn attention to the difficulties faced by residents of flood-hit areas, where damaged or submerged roads can leave communities without safe access to essential services. 

Floodwaters Cut Off Village

The incident occurred amid severe flooding in parts of Rewa district. Floodwater had reportedly rendered roads and regular transportation routes unusable, leaving villagers struggling to move between the affected areas and nearby facilities.

For the deceased man's family, the situation became particularly difficult after the body had to be taken from a hospital back to the village. With conventional transportation unavailable because of the flood conditions, villagers constructed the makeshift raft from drums.

The episode underscores the challenges that can arise when floodwaters isolate rural settlements and emergency transportation becomes difficult.

Makeshift Raft Becomes Only Option

The villagers reportedly tied drums together to create a floating structure capable of carrying the body across the water. The improvised arrangement was then used to navigate the flooded route.

The incident has raised questions about access to basic emergency infrastructure in flood-prone rural areas. While flood situations can disrupt roads and communication networks, the inability to transport a deceased person safely back home reflects the wider difficulties faced by residents during extreme weather events.

Rewa Among Flood-Hit Areas

Rewa has witnessed significant flooding following heavy rainfall in the region. A separate report by The Times of Indiasaid floods had affected around 250 villages in Rewa, with six deaths reported over a three-day period. 

The continuing situation has placed pressure on local communities and authorities as residents deal with inundated roads, disrupted movement and other consequences of rising water levels.

Questions Over Disaster Response

The incident involving the body has also brought the issue of disaster preparedness into focus. Rural communities in flood-prone regions often depend on roads and bridges to access hospitals, markets and other essential services. When these routes are submerged, residents can become effectively cut off.

Emergency response during such conditions requires arrangements for evacuation, medical assistance and the transportation of people and essential supplies. The Rewa incident illustrates how the disruption of basic connectivity can affect families even after a death.

For residents of Rouli village, the immediate priority was to bring the deceased home. With the usual route inaccessible, villagers were forced to rely on an improvised solution to cross the floodwaters.
