MS Dhoni Wanted 25% CSK Stake? Aakash Chopra Questions Report

A report claimed MS Dhoni sought a major equity stake in Chennai Super Kings, but former India batter Aakash Chopra called the figures unrealistic and questioned the story's authenticity.

MS Dhoni's reported attempt to acquire an equity stake in Chennai Super Kings has come under scrutiny after former India batter Aakash Chopra questioned the claims surrounding the negotiations.

According to a report cited by multiple outlets, Dhoni initially sought a 25% stake in CSK. The reported negotiations then involved lower figures, with Dhoni said to have reduced his demand while the franchise's proposed offer eventually reached 5.5%. There has been no official confirmation from Dhoni or CSK regarding the reported discussions.

Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel, said a 25% stake would represent an enormous financial commitment given CSK's reported valuation and commercial standing.

He pointed to the reported $1.7-$1.8 billion valuation of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and argued that a franchise such as CSK, with five IPL titles and an established brand beyond India, would command a similarly substantial valuation.

Chopra therefore questioned the plausibility of Dhoni seeking such a large share. He also said that even a 5.5% stake would represent a considerable amount of money.

More importantly, Chopra stopped short of calling the report fake because he said he did not have verified information. Instead, he described the sequence of reported negotiations as suspicious and said he had a feeling that the story was not true.

The original report, attributed to CricBlogger, claimed that Dhoni wanted to buy an equity stake rather than receive one for free. Other reports have described a series of proposed figures, including 25%, 20% and 18% on Dhoni's side, against progressively higher offers from CSK, with 5.5% reported as the franchise's maximum. However, these details remain based on secondary reporting rather than an officially confirmed agreement.

The issue has gained attention because Dhoni's association with CSK remains one of the strongest player-franchise relationships in IPL history. He did not play during the 2026 IPL season, but continued to remain a major figure around the franchise.

His playing future is now another point of speculation ahead of IPL 2027. However, there is currently no official confirmation that Dhoni has ended his association with CSK or that the reported stake discussions have changed his status with the franchise.

For now, the most significant takeaway is that the reported equity negotiations remain unverified. Chopra's comments add another layer to the story, but they do not independently establish whether Dhoni actually made the reported 25% demand.
