Videos sent by stranded Indian tourists and Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims have become a crucial source of information for anxious families as rescue operations continue after devastating floods and landslides near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Families Rely on Videos

Families across India are anxiously searching for updates on relatives who were travelling through flood-hit areas of Nepal. With roads destroyed and communication disrupted, short videos recorded by tourists and pilgrims have provided some of the few direct glimpses of conditions on the ground.

Several stranded Indians have used mobile phones to reassure their families that they are alive and waiting for help, while footage has also shown flooded roads, damaged infrastructure and difficult conditions in affected areas.

The disaster has left hundreds of foreign nationals missing or stranded, including Indian tourists and pilgrims travelling towards Kailash Mansarovar. Reuters reported that 288 Indian nationals were in Nepal, while around 200 more Indians were stranded in China following the disaster.

Pilgrims Caught in Disaster

A large number of Indian nationals were travelling in groups towards Mount Kailash when the flash flood struck near the Nepal-China border.

One pilgrimage group organised by a Tamil Nadu travel agency had 57 members travelling towards Kailash. According to Reuters, one bus carrying 20 people managed to escape, while another bus reportedly plunged into a gorge. The organiser's son was among those reported missing.

Another group associated with spiritual leader Sadhguru, comprising 77 pilgrims and three staff members, has also been reported missing.

The scale of the disaster has made it difficult for authorities and families to establish the whereabouts of every traveller.

Communication Lines Hit

The flooding has severely damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure in the mountainous border region. Mud, rocks and floodwater have cut off several areas, making ground-based rescue operations extremely difficult.

For families in India, this has created a painful information gap. Calls may not connect, while official information can take time to reach relatives.

The Indian government has been coordinating with Nepal over the situation involving Indian nationals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah on August 26 and expressed condolences over the loss of lives.

India said it was ready to provide humanitarian assistance to Nepal and that Indian teams were coordinating with Nepali authorities on relief and rescue operations.

The Indian government has also activated assistance mechanisms for citizens affected by the disaster.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu have been working to provide information and assistance to Indian nationals in the affected areas.

Rescue Efforts Face Risks

The rescue operation itself has become increasingly dangerous because of the possibility of further flooding.

A landslide-created barrier lake near the Nepal-Tibet border began overflowing on Friday, forcing rescue operations to be suspended in some areas and raising fears of another flash flood. Reuters reported that the lake's water volume had risen above 2.5 million cubic metres.

Nepali authorities have warned rescue workers and residents in vulnerable locations to move to safer ground as they monitor the situation.

The fresh threat has further complicated efforts to locate missing tourists and pilgrims.

Families Await Confirmation

For families in India, the videos coming from stranded travellers offer temporary relief but do not always establish the full status or location of missing groups.

Many relatives continue to contact travel operators, government helplines and authorities while waiting for confirmed information.

The disaster has also highlighted the vulnerability of the popular Kailash Mansarovar route, where travellers move through some of the most remote and geographically challenging parts of the Himalayan region.

Search Operation Continues

Nepal's devastating flash flood has killed 469 people, according to Nepal Police, while hundreds remain missing. The disaster has affected both local communities and foreign travellers caught along the border routes.

Rescue teams are continuing to search affected areas, but damaged roads, unstable terrain, heavy debris and the threat of another flood are slowing operations.

For Indian families, every new video, phone call or confirmed rescue brings a measure of hope. Until authorities complete the search and establish the whereabouts of those still missing, however, many families will remain anxiously waiting for definitive updates.
