The disaster, however, was <strong>not caused by a Chinese dam</strong>. Experts cited by Reuters say a glacier collapse triggered an ice-and-rock avalanche that sent a massive debris flow into the river system.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The tragedy has nevertheless highlighted a broader concern for India: the consequences of building major infrastructure in one of the world's most geologically fragile and rapidly changing mountain environments.</p>
<h4><strong>Glacier Collapse Triggered Floods</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The August 26 disaster began after the lower section of a glacier near Langtang Lirung collapsed. The falling ice and rock generated a powerful avalanche and debris flow that entered the Lhende Khola river system before devastating downstream areas in Nepal and adjoining Tibet.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Satellite imagery reviewed by Reuters showed extensive changes to the landscape following the collapse. The flood carried enormous quantities of mud, rock and ice, destroying roads, bridges, homes and other infrastructure.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The disaster has also created new hazards. Authorities are monitoring lakes formed upstream by the collapse because a sudden breach could generate another destructive flood wave.</p>
<h4><strong>Himalayan Risks Growing</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Scientists have warned that a warming climate is making high-altitude environments increasingly unstable. Rapid glacier melt, changing precipitation patterns and the weakening of ice and rock structures can increase the likelihood of cascading disasters.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Reuters reported that experts believe unusually warm conditions may have contributed to the destabilisation of the glacier involved in this week's disaster. Nepal has also experienced significant glacier loss in recent decades.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For countries such as India, the lesson extends beyond the immediate disaster. The Himalayas are not simply a source of water and hydropower; they are a highly dynamic geological system where earthquakes, landslides, glacial lake outbursts and sudden changes in river flows can occur.</p>
<h4><strong>China’s Mega-Dam Plans</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Against this backdrop, China's massive hydropower project on the lower reaches of the <strong>Yarlung Zangbo River</strong> has attracted particular attention.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">China officially announced the start of construction of the project in July 2025. The planned development is in Tibet's lower Yarlung Zangbo basin, close to the river's dramatic turn towards India.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Chinese officials have described the project as a major clean-energy initiative. China's foreign ministry has said the project is planned to have around <strong>60 gigawatts of installed capacity</strong> and could generate nearly 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Beijing has also argued that extensive geological assessments were conducted before development began.</p>
<h4><strong>Why India Is Concerned</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Yarlung Zangbo flows from Tibet into India, where it becomes the <strong>Brahmaputra</strong>, one of the country's most important rivers. It then continues into Bangladesh.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">India has long expressed concerns about Chinese activities on transboundary rivers. The Ministry of External Affairs has said India, as a lower riparian state, has conveyed its concerns to China and urged Beijing to ensure that upstream activities do not harm downstream interests.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The concerns are not limited to the possibility of water diversion. A project of such enormous scale raises questions about changes in river flows, sediment movement, ecological conditions and the availability of timely information during emergencies.</p>
<h4><strong>Dam Risk Debate</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">There is currently <strong>no evidence that the Nepal flood was caused by China's Yarlung Zangbo project</strong>. The available scientific evidence instead points to a glacier collapse and resulting debris flow.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But the disaster demonstrates why emergency preparedness matters when large infrastructure projects operate in an unstable Himalayan environment.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For India, the key issue is whether adequate information-sharing mechanisms, downstream warning systems and independent assessments are available if an extreme natural event affects river systems or infrastructure in Tibet.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">China has maintained that its hydropower development is responsible and that its projects have undergone extensive assessment. Beijing has also stressed that its approach seeks to balance development with environmental protection.</p>
<h4><strong>Need For Transparency</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The latest disaster could strengthen calls for greater transparency between China, India and Nepal over Himalayan water and disaster risks.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Real-time hydrological information, advance flood warnings and communication during emergencies can become critical when communities downstream have limited time to respond.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For India, the Brahmaputra is particularly important because millions of people depend on its waters and surrounding ecosystems. Any major change in the river's behaviour could have implications for agriculture, settlements, infrastructure and disaster management in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.</p>
<h4><strong>A Warning, Not Proof</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Nepal floods should therefore be viewed as a <strong>warning about Himalayan vulnerability, not proof that China's mega-dam caused the disaster</strong>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The immediate tragedy was driven by a natural chain of events beginning with a glacier collapse. Yet the scale and speed of the resulting destruction show how quickly hazards in the Himalayas can cross borders.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">As China moves ahead with one of the world's largest hydropower projects, the disaster is likely to intensify scrutiny of how major infrastructure can be designed and operated safely in such a volatile environment.</p>
<p>For India, the priority will be to ensure that development upstream does not compromise downstream safety, ecological stability or access to critical information.
