Rescue operations in Nepal's flood-hit Trishuli region have been temporarily halted after heavy rainfall caused the river level to rise, creating fresh danger for rescue personnel working in areas devastated by Wednesday's flash floods.

The latest disruption comes as Nepal continues a massive search-and-rescue operation following catastrophic flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors. Authorities have warned that renewed rises in water levels could trigger further flooding in already damaged areas.

The situation has complicated efforts to locate missing people, evacuate stranded residents and recover bodies from areas cut off by floodwaters, landslides and damaged roads.

Heavy Rain Raises River

Fresh rainfall has increased water levels in the Trishuli river system, prompting authorities to restrict rescue activity in vulnerable stretches.

The decision reflects the continuing danger faced by rescue teams operating along unstable riverbanks and damaged infrastructure. Search operations in the region have already been complicated by debris, destroyed roads and rapidly changing water conditions.

Authorities have urged people in the affected areas to remain alert and move to safer locations if water levels rise.

Fresh Flood Threat

The latest warning comes amid concerns about additional flooding following Wednesday's devastating flash floods.

Nepal's disaster management authorities have warned that water mixed with mud has accumulated in areas affected by the earlier disaster, raising fears of another surge.

The possibility of renewed flooding is particularly serious along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli corridors, where settlements, hydropower facilities, roads and bridges have already suffered extensive damage.

Rescue teams therefore face the difficult task of balancing the urgency of finding missing people with the safety of personnel deployed in hazardous terrain.

Death Toll Continues Rising

The scale of the disaster has continued to emerge as rescue teams reach previously inaccessible locations.

Nepal's disaster authorities have reported 579 deaths and 1,924 people missing, according to the latest reports available on Saturday. Thousands of people have been rescued, while large numbers remain displaced or cut off from communication.

The final toll could change as search teams gain access to areas that remain difficult to reach.

The floods have destroyed homes and infrastructure across parts of central Nepal and the country's northern border region.

2,100 People Rescued

Despite temporary interruptions, Nepal's security forces have continued large-scale rescue operations.

The Nepali Army said it had rescued 2,101 people through land and air operations since August 26. On Friday alone, its teams brought around 900 people, including 56 foreign nationals, to safety from areas including Timure, Syafrubesi and Mailung in Rasuwa.

The army has also provided medical assistance to more than 1,700 people through emergency medical centres in Trishuli and Dhunche.

Around 6,700 security personnel have been deployed in affected areas for rescue, search and relief operations, according to Radio Nepal.

Indians Among Those Affected

India is also closely monitoring the situation because hundreds of its nationals have been affected by the floods.

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that 84 Indians have been rescued, including 21 people from Tamil Nadu and 63 workers associated with the Trishuli-I hydropower project. Another 149 Indian nationals crossed safely into Nepal from China, while around 400 Indians remained safe on the Chinese side awaiting evacuation coordination.

Around 320 Indian nationals remain uncontactable, largely because communication networks have been disrupted by the disaster.

India has also sent specialised medical and rescue teams to assist with relief operations.

Hydropower Sites Hit

The floods have severely affected infrastructure along the river corridors, including hydropower projects.

A significant number of workers were trapped inside hydropower tunnels after the flooding. Nepali Army teams have since rescued 191 workers from under-construction hydropower tunnels along the affected rivers.

The incident highlights the particular risks faced by workers at infrastructure projects located in narrow Himalayan valleys, where sudden changes in river levels can cut off access within minutes.

Search Operation Faces Risks

For families waiting for missing relatives, the temporary halt in some rescue operations adds to an already desperate situation.

Rescuers must contend with unstable slopes, damaged bridges, blocked roads, rising rivers and the possibility of another sudden flood. Helicopters remain an important part of the operation where roads have been destroyed or become inaccessible.
