India finished their two-Test tour of Sri Lanka with a 1-0 series victory after the second Test in Colombo ended in a draw. India had dominated large portions of the series, including a convincing 165-run victory in Galle, but Sri Lanka avoided a clean sweep after Sonal Dinusha's determined resistance in the second Test.

The series also provided several encouraging signs for India's next phase of Test cricket. Young players stepped up in difficult away conditions, with Devdutt Padikkal and Manav Suthar emerging as the standout performers with bat and ball respectively.

Devdutt Padikkal

328 runs | Average 109.33 | Two centuries

Devdutt Padikkal was arguably India's biggest batting success of the tour and was named Player of the Series.

Batting at No. 3, Padikkal scored 328 runs in three innings at an average of 109.33, including centuries in both Tests. His best score was the magnificent 167 in Galle, where he played a major role in India's imposing first-innings total.

He followed that performance with another century in Colombo, scoring 117 in India's first innings of 503/9 declared. His consistency stood out because he converted starts into substantial scores and handled Sri Lanka's spin attack effectively.

Captain Shubman Gill specifically praised Padikkal after the series, saying the batter's approach after getting set was particularly impressive.

Manav Suthar

16 wickets | Ten-wicket match haul | Best match figures: 10 wickets

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was India's leading wicket-taker and another major revelation of the series.

Suthar finished with 16 wickets across the two Tests, including a remarkable 10-wicket haul in India's Galle victory. His performance gave India a major advantage on turning Sri Lankan pitches.

His ability to maintain pressure over long spells was especially valuable in a series affected by rain and changing match situations.

Gill was full of praise for Suthar after the series, describing him as “magnificent” and suggesting that he could become a long-term leader of India's spin attack.

Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel strengthened his case as an important member of India's Test batting group.

Playing as a specialist batter in the series, Jurel scored 173 runs in three innings at an average of 86.50, with a century and a fifty.

His most important contribution came in Colombo, where he produced an unbeaten 115. Jurel's innings helped India reach 503/9 declared and put Sri Lanka under enormous pressure early in the Test.

His ability to attack when required while remaining composed against spin added valuable depth to India's middle and lower order.

Rishabh Pant

168 runs | Average 56.00 | Two fifties

Rishabh Pant did not manage to convert his starts into a century, but he still made a substantial contribution across the series.

The wicketkeeper-batter scored 168 runs in three innings at an average of 56, with two fifties and a best score of 66.

Pant's aggressive approach provided India with momentum in the middle order. He also remained an important component of the team's balance as India managed their wicketkeeping and batting options during the tour.

His second-Test campaign was briefly interrupted after he was struck by a short-pitched delivery from Lahiru Kumara and retired hurt, although he later returned to the crease.

Prasidh Krishna

7 wickets | Average 24.57 | Best figures: 3/52

Prasidh Krishna's numbers may not match those of Suthar, but his contribution with the ball was important throughout the two Tests.

He finished the series with seven wickets at an average of 24.57, with best innings figures of 3/52.

The tall fast bowler provided India with a different threat from the spinners and was particularly useful when the team needed breakthroughs with the older ball.

His role became even more important after Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the series because of a persistent knee injury.

Youngsters Give India Boost

The performances of Padikkal, Suthar and Jurel were among the biggest positives for India.

Padikkal's success at No. 3 gives the team another potential long-term batting option, while Suthar's 16 wickets provide encouraging evidence of India's growing spin depth. Jurel, meanwhile, showed that he can contribute significant runs even when used primarily as a batter.

Gill also highlighted the performances of India's youngsters after the series, saying the team had taken several positives from the campaign.

India won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs before the second match in Colombo ended in a draw.

Sri Lanka had looked close to defeat in Colombo after India dominated the early stages, but Sonal Dinusha produced a remarkable resistance on the final day to save the match. Reuters noted that India had controlled much of the series despite missing the opportunity to complete a 2-0 sweep.

The result nevertheless gave India a valuable away-series victory and several encouraging performances from younger members of the squad.

For Indian cricket, the emergence of Padikkal and Suthar could prove particularly significant as the team looks ahead to the remainder of the World Test Championship cycle.
