Veteran Conservative MP James Cleverly has resigned from the UK's opposition Shadow Cabinet with immediate effect, formally beginning his bid to become the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London.

Cleverly, who has previously served as Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary, confirmed his decision while speaking to The Sunday Times. He had most recently served as the Conservatives' shadow minister for housing, communities and local government.
