Residents of Gayatri Nagar in Rewa’s Ward No. 10 have been struggling with severe waterlogging for nearly 10 days, even after the rains have eased. Roads and lanes remain submerged, making it difficult for residents to leave their homes, while water has entered several houses.The prolonged waterlogging has disrupted everyday life in the locality. With roads under water, two-wheelers and other vehicles are unable to move normally, affecting the supply of milk, vegetables, groceries and other essential items. Children have also been affected, with their school attendance and studies disrupted.

Pumps deployed to drain water

The Rewa Municipal Corporation has deployed pumps to remove the accumulated water. The effort has also received support from UltraTech, following intervention by Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla However, residents say pumping out the water will provide only temporary relief unless there is a proper outlet for itTheir concern is straightforward: if there is no adequate drain or drainage channel in the area, where will the water go after it is pumped out?Residents allege that Gayatri Nagar has been inhabited for around a decade and that taxes are being collected from the locality, but basic infrastructure such as proper roads and drainage has not kept pace with the settlement.

Waterlogging turns into a civic issue

The situation has now developed into more than a post-rain waterlogging problem. The prolonged accumulation of water has raised questions about drainage planning in one of Rewa’s residential areas.Residents are seeking immediate relief as well as a permanent drainage arrangement so that the locality does not face the same situation after every spell of heavy rain.

Officials inspect affected areas

Rewa Collector Narendra Kumar Suryavanshi inspected waterlogged areas of the city on August 29, including Ward No. 10 along with Wards 2 and 15. Municipal Commissioner Akshat Jain, SDM Anurag Tiwari and Tehsildar Anupam Pandey were also present during the inspection.Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla has also visited waterlogging-affected areas, including Gayatri Nagar. Officials have assured residents that efforts are being made to remove the accumulated water and work towards a permanent solution.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reached Rewa on Saturday night to review the flood and rain situation in the region. He directed officials to accelerate relief and rescue operations and ensure that affected people receive essential supplies, including food and drinking water.For Gayatri Nagar residents, however, the immediate priority remains getting out of their homes and restoring access to basic necessities.The bigger question is whether the water can be permanently diverted away from the locality. Without a proper drainage system, residents fear that the problem could return with the next spell of heavy rain.
