Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has called for greater acceptance of diversity and urged the global community to embrace the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, saying humanity remains fundamentally united despite differences in appearance, faith and way of life.

Addressing the Universal Oneness Celebration in New York on August 29, Bhagwat said the idea that the world is one family remains central to India's civilisational outlook. He argued that people may differ externally, but their underlying human and spiritual connection remains the same.

The RSS chief also said India's rise should not be measured only through economic or military strength. According to him, Bharat became a “Vishwaguru” through its tradition of serving humanity rather than seeking dominance as a superpower.

Unity Beyond Differences

Bhagwat said differences in physical appearance, language, religion and social practices should not become barriers between people.

He described diversity as a natural feature of human society while presenting unity as the deeper reality connecting people. He urged communities to respect and preserve those differences rather than treating them as a threat to social cohesion.

His remarks placed the ancient idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or the world as one family, at the centre of his message.

‘World Is One Family’

Bhagwat said people who remain open-minded and knowledgeable can recognise the philosophy that the entire earth is one family.

He said individuals may differ in their bodies, appearance and complexion, but remain one in essence. From that understanding, he argued, comes a responsibility to serve others and work for wider human welfare.

The RSS chief linked the philosophy to India's traditional emphasis on compassion, service and acceptance.

Bharat as Vishwaguru

Bhagwat also spoke about India's historical role in sharing knowledge beyond its borders.

He said Bharat did not become a “Vishwaguru” by conquering other countries. Instead, he argued, India's civilisational influence came from sharing knowledge and values.

He cited traditional knowledge systems including Ayurveda and astronomy and said India's ancestors travelled to different regions without seeking territorial conquest or forced conversion.

In a separate address in Toronto on August 31, Bhagwat again said Bharat became a “Vishwaguru, not a Mahashakti” through selfless service to humanity.

Diversity as Strength

Bhagwat said India's civilisational tradition recognises diversity as part of unity rather than as its opposite.

He referred to different castes, creeds and languages and argued that diversity is a natural expression of reality. At the same time, he said the underlying unity of humanity should remain the guiding principle.

The message formed a major part of the New York gathering, which brought together Indian-American community members and interfaith leaders. Reports said more than 6,000 people attended the event.

Service Above Self

Bhagwat also highlighted India's tradition of helping people facing persecution and hardship.

In his broader remarks during the overseas outreach, he recalled examples of India providing refuge to communities fleeing conflict and persecution. He also cited modern humanitarian operations in which Indian military aircraft evacuated people from several countries during a Middle East conflict.

He presented such examples as evidence of what he described as Bharat's tradition of extending assistance without discrimination.

US Visit Draws Debate

Bhagwat's US visit has also attracted political and public criticism.

Ahead of the New York event, civil rights and interfaith groups organised protests, while New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he opposed the programme. Critics questioned the RSS's ideological record and its approach towards religious minorities.

Bhagwat's New York remarks, meanwhile, stressed inclusion and unity. In another part of the event, he said that a person who believes Muslims should not live in Bharat would not represent the Hindu philosophy he advocates.

What Happens Next

Bhagwat's message comes as the RSS expands its international outreach during its centenary year. His three-country programme includes engagements in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, with meetings focused on Indian cultural values, the diaspora and international dialogue.

His emphasis on Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is likely to remain central to the RSS's overseas messaging, particularly as the organisation seeks dialogue with communities outside India.

For Indian audiences, the significance of the speech lies in its emphasis on unity, diversity, service and shared humanity rather than political power.
