India's Trust Shift: Why Nano Creators Are Beating Celebrities in 2026

Indian consumers are shifting trust from celebrities to regional creators. 82% now trust nano creators over celebrity endorsements. Read the full India news update.

For decades, brand building in India followed a predictable formula. Companies invested heavily in television advertising, secured celebrity endorsements, and competed for visibility on retail shelves. Success was determined by mass reach and traditional distribution networks. That era is ending.

Today, one of the most significant shifts in Indian marketing is taking place far from metropolitan centres, driven by regional creators who have become trusted voices within their communities. The question is no longer about follower counts—it is about authenticity, relatability, and local connection.

Trust Is the New Currency
The Influencer Marketing Consumer Report 2026 found that 61 per cent of consumers now perceive influencer content as credible, signalling a maturing market where digital creators hold measurable trust. This growing confidence translates directly into commerce, with 70 per cent of respondents stating that influencer recommendations significantly impact their purchasing decisions.

However, the nature of this influence is changing dramatically. Approximately 65 per cent of participants expressed the highest trust in influencers with fewer than 100,000 followers, citing a greater sense of relatability and realism compared to "mega" influencers.

Regional Voices Rising
Regional identity has emerged as a critical driver of engagement. According to the data, 72 per cent of consumers are more likely to purchase a product if an influencer speaks in their local language. This preference for "one of us" messaging suggests that brands must adopt hyper-local strategies to maintain relevance in a diverse market.

Around 82% of Indian consumers now say they trust recommendations from nano creators over celebrity endorsements, particularly when those recommendations are shared in their own language.

Non-Metros Become the Centre of Gravity
Nearly two out of every three creators in India now come from non-metro markets, signalling a structural shift in the country's creator economy. According to a joint study by the Srini Raju Centre for IT and the Networked Economy at ISB and creator marketing platform HashFame, 66% of India's 4.12 million creators were based outside metropolitan cities in 2025.

Between 2020 and 2025, the creator base outside metro cities expanded 6.4 times, significantly outpacing the 2.6-fold growth recorded in metropolitan markets. Non-metros overtook metros as the majority contributor to India's creator economy in 2021.

Gen Z Leads the Way
A TheYouthTalks survey of over 200 students across New Delhi and NCR found that 72% trust creators more than celebrities, and 65-68% have bought a product on a creator's recommendation. One student put it bluntly: “Celebrities are paid to promote, but creators actually use the products.”

What This Means for Brands
While audiences have diversified the creators they follow, brand investments continue to remain concentrated among a relatively small group of celebrity and macro influencers. More than 80% of non-metro creators belong to the nano and micro segments, yet millions remain outside regular media plans despite building loyal communities.

"Marketing today has evolved from communication to relationships. Celebrities help you communicate. Nano creators help you build relationships," said Madhu Viswanathan, associate professor of marketing and executive director, SRITNE, ISB.

The Way Forward
For brands, success requires moving beyond superficial localisation strategies. Simply translating national campaigns into regional languages is no longer sufficient. Consumers can quickly identify content that feels manufactured or disconnected from their realities.

Authenticity has become a critical competitive advantage. The most successful brand collaborations are those that allow creators to communicate in their own voice rather than adhere strictly to corporate messaging.
