A 35-year-old anaesthesiologist from Ludhiana was found dead at Delhi's Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital after allegedly administering a fatal dose of anaesthesia to himself while on duty. Police recovered a three-page handwritten note in which the doctor attributed his decision to his family's opposition to his relationship with a fellow doctor due to caste differences.

The deceased, identified as Dr Simarpreet Singh Anand, had been working as a Senior Resident in the Department of Anaesthesia at the hospital for the past three years. He was originally a resident of BRS Nagar in Ludhiana.

Incident During Night Duty

According to police, Dr Anand was on night duty from July 4 to July 5. Hospital staff said he had complained of fatigue and poor health after reporting for duty.

Investigators said he asked a technical assistant to insert a cannula into his left hand around 10 pm, reportedly stating that he needed to administer medication to himself.

The following morning, when the duty room remained locked from inside and there was no response, hospital staff forced open the door. Dr Anand was found unconscious and immediately shifted to the emergency department, where doctors declared him dead.

A crime team and forensic experts later recovered a used syringe and empty medicine vials from the room.

Suicide Note Mentions Relationship

During the investigation, police recovered a diary and a three-page suicide note from the doctor's belongings.

According to investigators, the note stated that Dr Anand had been in a relationship with a fellow doctor working at the same hospital for the past two years. The woman is reportedly a resident of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.

The note alleged that the couple's families were unwilling to approve their marriage because they belonged to different castes. Dr Anand wrote that the emotional distress caused by the situation had pushed him to take the extreme step and stated that he alone was responsible for his death.

He also expressed a final wish that his personal belongings be handed over to the woman mentioned in the note.

Police Begin Investigation

The hospital administration informed Civil Lines Police Station after the incident. Police have initiated inquest proceedings and sent the body for post-mortem examination by a medical board.

Investigators are examining the recovered note, forensic evidence and other circumstances surrounding the death. Officials have not indicated any suspicion of foul play at this stage, and the inquiry is continuing in accordance with legal procedure.

Experienced Anaesthesiologist

Dr Anand had completed his MBBS before pursuing an MD in Anaesthesia. Investigators said his medical background meant he was fully aware of the effects and dosage of anaesthetic drugs.

Authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report and forensic findings before completing the investigation.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Defends India Open Conditions, Calls Foreign Players' Complaints 'Overreactions'

Assam Chief Minister and Badminton Association of India (BAI) President Himanta Biswa Sarma has courted controversy after dismissing complaints raised by international badminton players over hygiene and wildlife-related issues during the India Open 2026, describing them as "little overreactions" and suggesting that a monkey spotted inside the venue should simply have been offered a banana.

Sarma made the remarks during The Indian Express Idea Exchange programme held in New Delhi on July 4, where he was asked about criticism surrounding the India Open, hosted in the national capital earlier this year.

Responding to concerns about monkeys entering the competition venue, Sarma said there was no reason to be alarmed.

"What is the problem with dogs and monkeys coming? If a monkey comes to watch a game, what is the problem with it? If I were there, I would have said, 'Bandar aaya tha to kela do' (If a monkey comes, give him a banana)," he remarked.

He added that monkey sightings were not unusual in Delhi and suggested that such incidents should be viewed as a reality of the city's environment rather than a major issue.

"If there is a game in Delhi, monkeys will come. Whether you want to organise the event or not is your choice," Sarma said.

The BAI chief also downplayed complaints regarding bird droppings and hygiene at the tournament venues, calling the criticism an overreaction.

"These are little overreactions. BAI and the Delhi government cannot physically remove the monkeys. If a monkey enters the court, the match has to be stopped as per Supreme Court guidelines," he said.

Sarma also addressed questions about the Badminton Association's earlier response, in which images of monkeys inside the venue had reportedly been described as AI-generated. Distancing himself from that statement, he said he was not responsible for the association's communication and reiterated that he would simply have fed the monkey a banana.

The controversy stems from multiple complaints made by foreign players during the India Open Super 750 tournament held in January.

Danish shuttler Mia Blichfeldt publicly criticised the training facilities, describing the conditions as unhygienic.

Speaking to reporters during the tournament, she had said, "The floors are dirty, there is a lot of dirt on the courts. There are birds flying inside the arena, and there is bird droppings on the floor."

Blichfeldt also shared her concerns on social media, highlighting the condition of the practice venue. It marked the second consecutive year that she had raised similar issues during the India Open.

The criticism intensified after photographs and videos surfaced showing monkeys inside the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, where players were training.

Photographer Azlynna Dewi posted images of a monkey sitting in the spectator area near the practice courts, while South Korean men's doubles player Kang Min Hyuk shared a video of another monkey at the training venue with the caption, "Are animals given free admission?"

Security personnel reportedly confirmed that one monkey remained inside the venue for nearly 10 minutes during a match before leaving.

Following the backlash, the Badminton Association of India acknowledged the concerns and assured players that improvements were being planned ahead of the BWF World Championships 2026, which India is scheduled to host in August.

In its official statement, the BAI said the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex represented a significant improvement over previous facilities and that a comprehensive review of tournament operations and infrastructure was underway.

The association also clarified that Mia Blichfeldt's remarks referred specifically to the KD Jadhav Stadium, which served as the training venue, and not the main competition arena.

The latest remarks by Sarma have reignited debate over sports infrastructure and athlete welfare, with critics arguing that concerns raised by international competitors deserve serious attention rather than being dismissed. The episode also comes at a time when India is preparing to host one of badminton's biggest global events, placing greater focus on the country's readiness to provide world-class facilities for international athletes.

Twenty rebel TMC MPs, including Sayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy, will seek recognition as a separate group when they meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla tomorrow.

Twenty Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MPs who broke away from Mamata Banerjee’s party will meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi on Monday to press for recognition as a separate parliamentary group, party sources and officials said on Sunday.

Rebel deputation heads to Delhi

Sayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy, two MPs aligned with the rebel camp, left Kolkata for Delhi on Sunday morning. A picture from Kolkata airport showed the two departing together. Jagadish (Jagadish Chandra) Basunia, one of the rebel MPs, told reporters the group would seek formal recognition and arrangements to sit separately in the House.

“The delegation will request the Speaker to accept our letter and make arrangements for a separate bloc,” a source close to the rebels said, adding the drive is aimed at securing institutional space in the Lok Sabha ahead of the new session.

What the rebels will ask

According to initial reports, the rebel MPs will present the signatures and documentation showing the backing of 20 out of the 28 TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha. Under the Tenth Schedule (Anti-Defection Law), a group backed by at least two-thirds of a party’s legislators can claim to be a separate faction and seek recognition from the Speaker or the Chairman.

TMC’s Lok Sabha strength and the arithmetic

TMC originally had 28 MPs in the Lok Sabha. With 20 MPs now aligned to the rebel camp, they have crossed the two-thirds threshold for the party’s parliamentary strength. That count, if accepted by the Speaker, would allow the group to be recognised as a separate entity — a step that could carry implications for seating, committee assignments and parliamentary procedure.

Party removals and fallout

Both Sayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy were removed from party posts by Mamata Banerjee on June 12. Sayoni had been serving as president of the party’s youth wing; Anrab Banerjee has been named to that post, party sources confirmed. Mala Roy was removed as president of the TMC women’s wing. The removals came amid intensifying factional tension after the party’s poor performance in recent elections.

Legal notices and family disputes

The political rupture has also produced legal moves. Baidyanath, son of MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, has reportedly sent legal notices to senior leaders including Mamata Banerjee, Mahua Moitra and Kalyan Banerjee. He asserted that neither he nor his mother sought a ticket from the Barasat Assembly seat, signalling disputes over nominations and local claims.

Rebellion timeline and comparison

The split within the TMC accelerated rapidly after Mamata Banerjee’s electoral defeat. Results declared on May 4 were followed by a letter from rebel MPs to the Lok Sabha Speaker on May 18 seeking recognition as a separate group. A list of 19 names — including high-profile figures such as Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Yusuf Pathan and Shatabdi Roy — surfaced on June 12 with signatures attached.

Observers note parallels with the 2022 Shiv Sena split in Maharashtra, when a large group of MLAs broke away, prompting legal battles and a floor test. The final arbiter in such matters is often the Speaker or, if contested, the courts.

Impact on TMC’s strength

The rebellion has significantly reduced Mamata Banerjee’s parliamentary and legislative clout. In the Assembly, 58 of TMC’s 80 MLAs have reportedly joined the rebel camp, leaving the party with 22 MLAs. In the Lok Sabha, the split has left Mamata with only eight MPs. The Rajya Sabha has seen resignations too, with four of the party’s 13 members quitting in quick succession in June.

What to expect next

The ball now lies with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who will examine the rebel group’s claim and supporting documents. If he accepts their petition, the rebels can get recognition as a separate parliamentary group; if he refuses, the matter could move to the courts. TMC’s central leadership has the option to contest any such decision through legal channels, party insiders said.

For now, Delhi will host a crucial meeting that could redefine TMC’s parliamentary footprint — and reshape the party’s immediate political strategy.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio begins visit in Kolkata, to meet PM Modi and attend Quad foreign ministers’ meeting in Delhi

Marco Rubio landed in Kolkata on Saturday morning, launching a four-day official visit to India that will include meetings with top Indian leaders and regional engagements tied to the Quad, officials and local sources said.

Initial stop in Kolkata
Rubio — accompanied by his wife Jeanette D. Rubio and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor — visited the Mother Teresa House of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata shortly after arrival, according to on-the-ground reports and photographs released by the Missionaries. The short visit included a tour of the facility and interactions with residents, agency staff and volunteers, sources familiar with the itinerary said.

Delhi meetings scheduled
After an overnight stay in Kolkata, Rubio is travelling to New Delhi where he is scheduled to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later today. The White House and India’s external affairs ministry confirmed the meeting in separate briefings, describing it as part of broader efforts to deepen bilateral ties on trade, technology and regional security.

Talks with Jaishankar and embassy events
On Sunday, Rubio will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi for talks that officials said will focus on the Indo-Pacific, supply-chain resilience and defence cooperation. The U.S. diplomat is also slated to attend the U.S. Embassy’s Independence Day celebrations in Delhi, a customary engagement during visits by senior American officials that also serves as a platform for public diplomacy.

Quad agenda in focus
A major element of Rubio’s trip is his attendance at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Tuesday, hosted by India in New Delhi. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi will join the meeting at the invitation of EAM Jaishankar, the ministry said. The gathering will, according to the External Affairs Ministry, review progress on ongoing Quad projects and discuss regional and global issues of shared interest consistent with the Quad’s vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Agra and Jaipur on itinerary
Between the Delhi engagements, Rubio is scheduled to visit Agra and Jaipur on Monday, sources said. Those stops reflect a common diplomatic practice of including cultural and regional site visits alongside high-level talks; they also present opportunities for bilateral outreach in states outside the national capital.

What officials say
India’s External Affairs Ministry issued a brief statement noting the Quad meeting will “review progress on ongoing projects and discuss regional and global issues,” while a U.S. State Department spokesperson framed Rubio’s trip as a “chance to advance cooperation on economic and security issues, and to strengthen people-to-people ties.” Neither side provided a full public list of discussion items, citing the usual practice of bilateral consultations on sensitive issues.

Local reaction and ground cues
At the Missionaries of Charity facility in north Kolkata, staff described the Rubio visit as low-key and focused on welfare concerns rather than political messaging. A volunteer at the house said the family spent time with residents in the late morning and observed daily routines, declining to be named. Early-morning arrivals and a modest motorcade contrasted with higher-security visits seen during other high-profile foreign delegations.

Why the trip matters
Rubio’s visit comes as Washington and New Delhi seek to broaden cooperation beyond defence—into semiconductors, clean energy and supply-chain links—while coordinating on regional diplomacy. The Quad meeting will be watched for concrete project updates and possible statements on maritime security and climate resilience, areas where the four partners have sought practical cooperation.

Next steps and outlook
After the Quad meeting, Rubio’s delegation is expected to hold follow-up sessions with Indian officials and U.S. Embassy staff before concluding the visit late Tuesday. Officials on both sides signalled that outcomes would likely be framed as incremental steps in an expanding strategic partnership rather than sweeping policy shifts.

In a stunning display of dominance, Punjab and Vidarbha qualified for the Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final on Tuesday, decisively ending the campaigns of fancied sides Delhi and Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinals. The day was defined by colossal team performances, with both winning sides posting 300-plus totals before their bowlers dismantled the opposition chases.

The results solidify the tournament’s reputation as a fierce proving ground for India’s next generation of cricketing talent, offering crucial insights into form and resilience ahead of the national selection cycle.

Punjab’s Batting Powerhouse Overwhelms Madhya Pradesh

At the BCCI Centre of Excellence’s Ground 1, Punjab cricket announced its title ambitions loud and clear. After being put in to bat, they amassed a formidable 345 for 6, fueled by a top-order blitz. Openers Prabhsimran Singh (88) and Harnoor Singh (51) laid a 116-run foundation, which was capitalized on by Anmolpreet Singh (70) and Nehal Wadhera (56).

The chase never materialized for Madhya Pradesh. Their innings collapsed to 162 all out in just 31.2 overs, handing Punjab a massive 183-run victory—their largest ever win when batting first in the tournament’s history. Captain Venkatesh Iyer’s golden duck epitomized a day where MP’s batting lineup had no answers.

Vidarbha Hold Nerve to Topple Delhi

On the adjacent ground, Vidarbha cricket showcased a masterclass in balanced performance. Asked to bat first by Delhi skipper Ishant Sharma, they posted a competitive 300 for 9. Key contributions came from Atharva Taide (50), Dhruv Shorey (49), and a brilliant 86 from Yash Rathod.

Delhi’s reply started briskly but unraveled spectacularly. Despite a solid 66 from opener Anuj Rawat, a dramatic middle-order collapse saw them slump from a promising position to 224 all out. The spin duo of Nachiket Bhute and Harsh Dubey were instrumental, claiming three wickets each to seal Vidarbha’s 76-run win and their semi-final berth.

Why These Results Matter Now

The Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final lineup is now set, with Punjab and Vidarbha joining Karnataka and Saurashtra. In a cricket-obsessed nation, this domestic tournament is more than just a competition; it’s a direct pipeline to the national team. Performances here, like Devdutt Padikkal crossing 700 runs in the edition, are heavily scrutinized by selectors.

“The quarterfinals separated the tactically sharp from the merely talented,” commented a veteran domestic cricket analyst. “Punjab’s aggressive batting philosophy and Vidarbha’s ability to defend a total under pressure are exactly the kinds of credentials that get players noticed at the highest level.”

The Road to the Final

The semi-finals promise high-octane cricket. Punjab’s explosive batting will be tested against Karnataka’s all-round strength, while Vidarbha’s gritty unit faces the challenge of Saurashtra. Based on today’s evidence, both victors have the form and firepower to go all the way.

For Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, the exit is a harsh lesson in the perils of knockout cricket. A single off-day, especially in the field or during a chase, can abruptly end a promising campaign, underscoring the uncompromising nature of India’s premier domestic 50-over contest.

In a sensational display of form ahead of the international season, superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma marked their much-anticipated return to domestic cricket with thunderous centuries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Wednesday. Both icons powered their teams, Delhi and Mumbai respectively, to commanding victories in their tournament openers.

The simultaneous knocks sent a strong message to national selectors and fans, underscoring their unwavering class and match-winning prowess even in the domestic arena.

Kohli’s Masterclass Anchors Delhi’s Chase

Playing for Delhi after a 15-year gap in the tournament, Virat Kohli crafted a flawless 131 runs off just 101 balls against Andhra Pradesh in Bengaluru. Chasing a steep target of 299, Kohli’s innings, laced with 11 fours and 3 sixes, was a lesson in controlled aggression. He forged crucial partnerships, notably with Priyansh Arya (74) and Nitish Rana (77), to guide Delhi to a four-wicket win with over 12 overs to spare.

During his knock, Kohli also crossed the monumental milestone of 16,000 runs in List-A cricket, becoming only the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve the feat.

Rohit’s Blitzkrieg Flattens Sikkim

At the same time in Jaipur, Rohit Sharma turned the clock back with a devastating assault on the Sikkim bowling attack. The ‘Hitman’ smashed a breathtaking 155 off a mere 94 deliveries, including 18 fours and 9 sixes, to help Mumbai chase down 237 in just 30.3 overs. He brought up his century in 61 balls, marking his first Vijay Hazare Trophy ton in 17 years, and fittingly won the Player of the Match award.

His innings was a stark reminder of his destructive capabilities at the top of the order, providing ideal preparation for the upcoming ODI series.

Why This Performance Matters Now

With a crucial three-match ODI series against New Zealand on the horizon, these knocks are timely. They are not just runs; they are a statement of intent, sharpness, and hunger. For team management, seeing both pillars of the batting lineup in prime form, adjusting to different match situations, is the best possible scenario.

A Day of Records

Beyond the two icons, the day witnessed historic events. Bihar’s 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed a 36-ball hundred, becoming the youngest centurion in men's List-A cricket, and propelled his team to a world-record total of 574/6.

Conclusion: A Statement Made

The Vijay Hazare Trophy opening day was decisively owned by India’s modern greats. Kohli’s chase-master classic and Rohit’s explosive opener have set a electrifying tone for the tournament. For Indian cricket fans, it was a perfect exhibition of why these two remain indispensable, their brilliance transcending the platform and setting the stage for the international challenges ahead.
