Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India’s automobile industry is well placed to expand its presence in global markets, underlining the sector’s growing role in manufacturing, exports, technology and employment.

Addressing the automotive industry, Modi said India’s automobile ecosystem has developed the capabilities needed to compete internationally. His remarks come as the country seeks to strengthen domestic manufacturing, increase exports and build a globally competitive automotive supply chain.

Focus on Global Automotive Leadership

The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect the government’s broader push to position India as a major global manufacturing and mobility hub. The automobile sector has emerged as an important component of India’s manufacturing strategy, with policy support aimed at encouraging investment, technology adoption and greater integration with international supply chains.

The government has also been promoting domestic production of vehicles and components through initiatives designed to improve competitiveness and reduce dependence on imports.

Auto Components Seen as Key to Expansion

India’s global automotive ambitions extend beyond finished vehicles to the wider component industry. The government has been encouraging auto component manufacturers to expand their international footprint and become part of global supply chains.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has also called upon the Indian auto component industry to increase its global presence, highlighting the importance of exports and international competitiveness. 

The expansion of India's component manufacturing capabilities could help domestic companies participate more extensively in international automotive production networks.

Electric Vehicles Add New Opportunity

The shift towards electric mobility is creating another opportunity for Indian manufacturers to build an international presence. Government-backed initiatives have sought to encourage electric vehicle production, battery manufacturing and the development of supporting infrastructure.

India has also begun positioning itself as an export base for electric vehicles. Government data has highlighted the export potential of Made-in-India electric vehicles and the development of a wider domestic EV ecosystem. 

Policy Support for Automobile Manufacturing

The automobile and auto-component industry is among the sectors covered by India's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) framework. The scheme is designed to encourage investment, strengthen manufacturing capabilities and improve the competitiveness of Indian companies.

The government has also linked automotive manufacturing with its wider objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat, technological development and integration into global value chains. 

Skills and Future-Ready Workforce

Alongside manufacturing capacity, the government has stressed the importance of developing a workforce equipped for the changing automotive industry.

The transition towards electric vehicles, connected mobility, advanced manufacturing and other emerging technologies is increasing demand for specialised skills. A recent government communication linked India's automotive ambitions with the need to build a future-ready workforce capable of supporting a globally competitive industry.

India's large domestic market provides a significant base for automobile manufacturers and component suppliers, while rising manufacturing capabilities create opportunities for exports.

The combination of domestic demand, expanding production capacity, policy support and the transition towards new mobility technologies could strengthen India's position in global automotive supply chains.

Modi's latest remarks underline the government's expectation that Indian automobile and component manufacturers can use these capabilities to increase their international presence and contribute more significantly to India's manufacturing and export growth.
