Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the third round of the 2026 US Open after making a strong comeback against Portugal’s Jaime Faria, with the Spaniard admitting that he needed to be more patient and build points instead of rushing for quick winners.

The defending champion lost the opening set 4-6 but responded emphatically, winning the next three sets 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2 to complete a four-set victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz said his early approach was not effective as he tried to finish points too quickly. He explained that changing his strategy and playing longer rallies helped him settle into the contest.

“I had to play long rallies, be patient over the first two or three shots, and after that, go for the point,” Alcaraz said after the win.

The Spaniard said he adjusted his game plan by focusing more on cross-court exchanges before attacking. According to him, the tactical change allowed him to play with greater calmness and find openings in Faria’s defence.

The match was another important test for Alcaraz, who returned to competitive tennis at the US Open after a wrist injury kept him away from the court for several months. The Spaniard had earlier said his focus was on regaining match rhythm and assessing his body during the tournament.

Alcaraz’s victory extended his strong record at the US Open, where he is chasing a third consecutive men’s singles title. The 23-year-old has already won the tournament twice, in 2022 and 2025.

The Spaniard will next face China’s Wu Yibing in the third round. Wu reached the stage after defeating Australia’s James Duckworth in straight sets.

For Alcaraz, the focus now shifts towards maintaining consistency as the tournament progresses. His latest win showed not only his attacking ability but also his willingness to adapt when his initial game plan does not work.
