Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav celebrated Janmashtami at his official residence, joining children and devotees in the festivities and breaking the traditional matki while holding a little Bal Gopal in his lap.

The celebration at the Chief Minister's residence was held amid Krishna bhajans, a Maharas performance and cultural programmes. Children dressed as Radha and Krishna were among the highlights of the evening, while public representatives, members of the saint community and citizens also attended.

After breaking the matki, Yadav distributed makhan-mishri to children with his own hands. The scene added a traditional touch to the Janmashtami celebrations at the CM residence.

CM highlights Krishna's message of resilience

Addressing the gathering, Yadav said Janmashtami should not be limited to a festival or holiday. He highlighted episodes from Lord Krishna's life and said they continue to offer lessons on facing difficult circumstances with patience and courage. The Chief Minister also spoke about Krishna's association with Ujjain's Sandipani Ashram, where, according to the traditional account, Krishna received his education and developed his friendship with Sudama. He emphasised the role of education and the guru-shishya tradition in Krishna's life.

MP plans to develop Krishna-linked sites as pilgrimage destinations

The celebration also became an occasion for the state government's plans around places associated with Krishna's life and traditions.Yadav said Madhya Pradesh would develop such locations as religious tourism and pilgrimage destinations. He specifically referred to Janapav, associated in tradition with Krishna meeting Parashurama, along with Ujjain's Sandipani Ashram, Amjhera near Dhar and Narayan near Mahidpur. The state had also announced ahead of Janmashtami that Krishna-themed programmes would be organised across 55 districts at 111 locations, with more than 1,500 local artists scheduled to participate.

Focus on connecting young people with cultural traditions

Yadav said merely declaring a holiday for a festival was not enough and argued that younger generations should also understand the traditions and stories associated with such occasions. The Chief Minister said the government had been encouraging large-scale cultural and religious celebrations with the aim of taking these traditions to a wider audience.A separate highlight of the CM residence programme was the presentation of a roughly three-foot Radha-Krishna idol to Yadav. According to a report citing the event organisers, the idol was made from locally sourced Krishna shila and was crafted by Mandla sculptor Kishore Kalpiwa
