The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Saturday conducted searches at the residence and premises linked to former state minister and senior DMK leader K N Nehru in Tiruchirappalli, as part of an ongoing corruption investigation involving the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department.

The searches were carried out at Nehru’s residence in the Thillai Nagar area of Tiruchirappalli on September 5. Several DMK cadres gathered outside the premises as vigilance officials conducted the operation. Former Tamil Nadu minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi also reached the location during the searches, according to reports. 

Searches Linked to MAWS Probe

The latest action comes against the backdrop of a case concerning alleged irregularities in the MAWS Department during Nehru’s tenure as the minister in charge of the portfolio.

Reports said the investigation covers allegations relating to recruitment, contract allocation and transfers in the department. The DVAC has registered a case against Nehru and others in connection with the allegations. 

The searches are part of the investigative process. Allegations under investigation do not by themselves establish criminal liability, and the evidence gathered during the searches will have to be assessed by the investigating agency and the courts through the applicable legal process.

Madras High Court Order

The action follows proceedings before the Madras High Court earlier this year concerning allegations linked to recruitment in the state department.

In February 2026, the High Court directed the DVAC to register a criminal case based on material shared by the Enforcement Directorate concerning alleged irregularities. The court said the material disclosed a cognisable offence warranting registration of a case and a detailed investigation.

Nehru subsequently approached the High Court seeking relief in relation to the DVAC case. In April, the court adjourned proceedings concerning contempt and review petitions after the matter was brought before it. 

DMK Supporters Gather Outside

The searches triggered a gathering of DMK workers outside Nehru’s residence in Tiruchirappalli.

The presence of party cadres added a political dimension to the vigilance operation, although their gathering does not alter the legal status of the investigation. The searches themselves are being conducted by the state anti-corruption agency as part of its probe.

Authorities have not indicated that the search operation amounts to a finding of guilt against Nehru.

Earlier Enforcement Action

The latest DVAC operation is not the first time Nehru has faced scrutiny from investigating agencies.

The former minister was also the subject of enforcement action in 2025 in a separate matter, when searches by the Enforcement Directorate triggered criticism from the DMK, which alleged political vendetta. The party has previously disputed corruption allegations involving its leaders. 

The current DVAC investigation, however, concerns alleged irregularities in the MAWS Department and should be viewed on the basis of the specific case and evidence being examined by the state vigilance agency.

What the Probe Could Examine

The investigation is expected to focus on the alleged transactions and administrative decisions identified in the case, including recruitment and other departmental processes.

Search operations typically allow investigators to collect documents, electronic records and other material that may be relevant to the allegations. Whether any material recovered during the latest searches leads to further action will depend on the DVAC's investigation.

As of Saturday, officials had not released a complete account of the material seized during the searches.

Political and Legal Implications

The timing of the operation is likely to attract political attention in Tamil Nadu, where corruption allegations involving senior leaders have repeatedly become a major point of confrontation between ruling and opposition parties.

For the investigation, however, the immediate issue is evidence. The DVAC will have to establish whether the alleged irregularities occurred, who was responsible and whether the evidence supports further prosecution.

The searches at K N Nehru’s residence therefore mark another significant stage in a case that has already reached the Madras High Court. The next steps will depend on the findings of the vigilance investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
