Five days after the Mandakini River flooded parts of Chitrakoot in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh, the water has receded but the scale of damage is becoming visible across homes, shops and residential lanes. Mud and sludge remain inside several properties, while traders are assessing losses and residents are struggling to clean their houses.

Homes and Shops Left Under Mud

Residents said the water rose rapidly, leaving little time to move household belongings or commercial stock to safer locations.

Mamata Sharma, who runs a general store and clothing shop in Arogyadham, said the rising water gave her little opportunity to shift essential goods to the upper floor. Household items and merchandise were subsequently damaged by floodwater and mud.

At Purani Lanka Tiraha, footwear trader Jitendra reportedly found his shop in disarray after opening the shutter. The counter was damaged, furniture was displaced and shoes and footwear stock were covered in mud. He estimated his loss at around ₹3 lakh.

The damage has left many families and small traders with the difficult task of separating salvageable goods from items that have been destroyed.

Food Relief Reaches Areas, But Cleaning Water Is Scarce

Relief efforts have continued in flood-affected areas, with the administration, religious institutions and voluntary organisations providing food and drinking water.

Residents, however, say the immediate requirement has changed as the floodwater recedes. They now need sufficient water to wash mud and sludge from homes and businesses.

Poonam, who operates a tea and snacks outlet near MPT Chauraha, said part of her stock was washed away. The remaining material and accumulated dirt inside the establishment now need to be cleaned.

Social worker Ramshiromani Sharma said mud remains inside several houses and hotels. According to him, using river water for extensive cleaning is not practical, while municipal teams have not yet reached every affected location.

Main Roads Reopen as Cleanup Moves Into Lanes

The situation showed some improvement on Thursday as rainfall eased and floodwater receded. Traffic resumed on the main road that had remained closed during the flooding, while accumulated waste and mud were removed from several stretches.

The administration has maintained a sizeable deployment in Chitrakoot following the flood. With immediate rescue and relief operations giving way to recovery work, the focus has shifted towards restoring roads, residential areas and local businesses.

Cleaning operations are now being extended into smaller lanes and neighbourhoods. Workers are removing sludge, debris and other waste left behind by the flood.

Power Restored to 709 of 1,275 Affected Consumers

Electricity infrastructure was also damaged during the flooding and heavy rainfall.

According to the local power distribution information provided in the source material, 19 transformers at the Chitrakoot distribution centre were affected. Eleven had been restored by Thursday, while work on the remaining eight was continuing.

Of the 1,275 electricity consumers affected by the disruption, power had been restored to 709 connections. Restoration work for the remaining 566 connections was underway.

Electricity workers are continuing repairs in areas where muddy and waterlogged conditions have complicated access.

Brief Sunshine Offers Relief After Days of Rain

After several days of persistent rain and cloudy weather, sunlight appeared for a short period at around 4 pm on Thursday.

The break in rainfall provided residents with some relief and gave authorities an opportunity to accelerate cleaning and restoration operations. However, the impact of the flooding remains visible in several parts of Chitrakoot.

Recovery Begins After the Flood

For residents, the challenge has now moved beyond immediate evacuation and relief. Families are cleaning mud-covered homes, traders are calculating losses and local authorities are working to restore essential infrastructure.

The reopening of major roads and restoration of electricity to more than half of the affected connections are signs of gradual recovery. Yet hundreds of consumers remain without power, while many households and businesses continue to deal with damaged belongings and accumulated sludge.

The coming days will therefore be critical for Chitrakoot's recovery. As weather conditions improve, residents and authorities face the task of clearing the remaining debris and helping affected families and businesses return to normal life.
