Broadway and international music theatre star Lea Salonga has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking a historic milestone in her decades-long career.

Salonga received the 2,855th star in the Live Performance category during a ceremony in Los Angeles, becoming the first Filipina performer to receive the prestigious recognition.

The honour celebrates Salonga’s contribution to musical theatre, film and entertainment over a career spanning more than four decades. She gained global recognition for her breakthrough role as Kim in the musical ‘Miss Saigon’, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1991. She was the first Asian performer to win the award in that category.

Beyond Broadway, Salonga became widely known internationally as the singing voice of two iconic Disney characters — Princess Jasmine in ‘Aladdin’ and Fa Mulan in ‘Mulan’. Her work helped introduce her voice and Filipino talent to audiences around the world.

At the Walk of Fame ceremony, fellow artists including Ming-Na Wen, Darren Criss and Brandy celebrated Salonga’s influence and her role in creating greater representation for Asian and Filipino performers in global entertainment.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce had earlier announced that Salonga would receive the honour for her achievements in live performance, describing the recognition as a milestone for both the artist and the Filipino community worldwide.

Salonga’s journey began in the Philippines, where she entered the entertainment industry as a child performer before achieving international success through theatre. Her career has included stage productions, films, television appearances and music projects.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame recognition adds another major achievement to Salonga’s list of honours and highlights her contribution to global performing arts.
