Westminster Magistrates’ Court ruled that Ajith Kumar Mupparapu can be extradited to India, where he faces allegations linked to the death of his estranged wife’s mother and alleged plots against her family.

London Court Allows Extradition

A London court has ruled that Indian-origin British pharmacist Ajith Kumar Mupparapu can be extradited to India to face trial over allegations of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to murder involving his estranged wife's family in Hyderabad.

Mupparapu, 46, appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court, where the Crown Prosecution Service presented the case on behalf of Indian authorities.

District Judge John Zani ruled that Mupparapu has a case to answer and that extradition can proceed, subject to assurances concerning his treatment while in judicial custody in India.

The ruling does not amount to a finding of guilt. Mupparapu would still have to face proceedings in India, where the allegations would be tested before a court.

Four Alleged Incidents

The UK court was told that Indian authorities are investigating four separate incidents allegedly involving Mupparapu in 2023.

The allegations centre on members of the family of Sirisha Muttavarapu, who had filed for divorce from Mupparapu.

According to the case presented to the London court, the first allegation involves a conspiracy to kill Sirisha and members of her family through arsenic poisoning.

The second concerns an alleged plot involving the use of succinylcholine injections against Sirisha's father.

The remaining allegations involve claims that Mupparapu sought to arrange contract killings targeting his father-in-law.

Road Accident Plot Alleged

The court was told that one of the alleged plans involved making the killing of Mupparapu's father-in-law appear to be a road accident.

Prosecutors also alleged that Mupparapu attempted to hire people in India to carry out attacks on his estranged wife's family.

The allegations relate to separate incidents in 2023 and form the basis of the Indian authorities' request for his extradition.

The prosecution's case was presented as evidence supporting the request rather than a final determination of the allegations.

Death Triggered Investigation

The case came under greater scrutiny after Sirisha Muttavarapu's mother died in July 2023.

Telangana authorities subsequently sought Mupparapu in connection with their investigation into the death.

Indian authorities allege that the death was connected to the wider conspiracy involving Sirisha's family.

The extradition proceedings in Britain were therefore focused on whether the legal threshold for sending Mupparapu to India had been met, rather than deciding whether he committed the alleged offences.

Defence Challenges Extradition

Mupparapu's legal team opposed the extradition request.

His lawyers argued that there was insufficient evidence to justify sending him to India to face trial. They also raised concerns about his treatment if he were placed in judicial custody in India.

The defence specifically expressed fears over the possibility of torture.

Those arguments formed part of the extradition proceedings before the Westminster court.

However, Judge Zani concluded that Mupparapu had a case to answer and that extradition could proceed on the basis of assurances provided regarding his treatment in custody.

Case Heard In April

The substantive extradition hearing took place in April, with the court subsequently handing down its written judgment this week.

The decision clears the legal stage for Mupparapu's potential return to India, although extradition proceedings can involve further legal steps before an individual is actually transferred.

The case has attracted attention in both Britain and India because of the nature of the allegations and the international dimensions of the investigation.

Mupparapu is a British citizen of Indian origin and is wanted by authorities in Telangana to face proceedings connected to the alleged crimes.

Trial Awaits In India

If the extradition proceeds, Mupparapu will be returned to India to face the criminal justice process.
