At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded following a traffic collision in western Iran, Iranian state media reported. The incident occurred on Saturday on an intercity road linking Sanandaj County in Kurdestan province with Hamedan County in neighbouring Hamedan province.

According to Iran's state-run IRIB broadcaster, the tanker was involved in a traffic accident before catching fire. The resulting blaze spread to several vehicles in the area, adding to the casualties. Emergency teams were dispatched to the scene and the injured were taken to a hospital in Sanandaj.

Tanker explosion follows traffic collision

The accident occurred on a road between Sanandaj and Hamedan, an important intercity route in western Iran. Emergency medical officials said the explosion occurred after the tanker was involved in a collision, causing flames to engulf nearby vehicles.

State media cited Babak Hodaei, head of emergency medical services at Kurdestan University of Medical Sciences, as confirming the casualties and the continuing rescue response. 

Further reports citing Iran's IRNA said the tanker struck other vehicles before bursting into flames near a traffic police station close to Sanandaj. A faulty brake system was reported as a possible factor, although authorities' investigation into the accident remains important in establishing the exact sequence of events.

Seven injured, rescue operations continue

Seven people were reported injured in the explosion. Emergency responders transported them to a medical facility in Sanandaj for treatment.

Rescue operations were still continuing at the accident site when the initial reports emerged, according to officials cited by Iranian state media and Xinhua. The authorities have not yet released a complete breakdown of the victims' identities or the extent of injuries suffered by those hospitalised.

Nearby vehicles caught fire

The tanker explosion triggered fires involving several vehicles near the crash site. The incident highlights the potentially severe consequences of accidents involving fuel-carrying vehicles, particularly when a collision occurs in a busy or populated area.

The latest casualty figures remain based on reports from Iranian authorities and state media, with further details expected as rescue and investigative operations progress.

Iran's wider road safety concerns

The accident comes against a backdrop of persistent road-safety concerns in Iran. The Associated Press reported that road and traffic accidents in the country claim more than 17,000 lives annually, with experts pointing to factors including vehicle safety, compliance with traffic regulations and emergency-response challenges. 

The Sanandaj area has also witnessed a deadly tanker-related accident in the past. In 2018, a collision involving a fuel tanker and an intercity passenger bus near Sanandaj killed 15 people and injured four others, according to AP. 

Incident comes amid wider Iran tensions

The tanker explosion occurred as Iran remains at the centre of heightened regional tensions involving shipping and energy infrastructure. However, the western Iran incident was reported as a traffic accident, with no indication in the initial reports that it was connected to the wider military confrontation in the region.

Separately, reports this week have described incidents involving oil tankers in and around the Gulf, including US military strikes on Iranian-linked crude carriers. Those developments are distinct from the road accident in Kurdestan province and should not be conflated with the cause of Saturday's explosion. 

Authorities are expected to establish the precise circumstances of the collision and tanker fire as the investigation continues.
