Fresh flooding in Nepal's Gorkha district on Sunday washed away four houses and a suspension bridge after the Therang River rose rapidly, prompting authorities to issue an alert for areas along the Budhi Gandaki river basin.

No deaths were reported in the latest account of the Gorkha incident. Local residents moved to safer locations after receiving information about the rising water, helping prevent casualties, according to local authorities.

The latest flooding comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of the catastrophic August 26 flash floods and landslides, which have killed more than 1,300 people and left thousands missing. (Business Standard)

Four houses, bridge swept away

The Therang River overflowed in Gorkha early Sunday, with strong currents damaging homes and infrastructure along the river.

Four houses and a suspension bridge were swept away by the floodwaters. Authorities were monitoring the situation as water levels increased and warned communities in the Budhi Gandaki basin to remain alert.

The absence of reported casualties in Gorkha was attributed to residents moving out of vulnerable areas after receiving warnings.

Nepal flood death toll reaches 1,344

The latest nationwide figures underline the scale of the disaster Nepal is still confronting.

At least 1,344 bodies have been recovered, while around 5,000 people remain missing, according to reports citing Nepal's disaster management authorities. More than 13,000 people have also been rescued during continuing search-and-rescue operations. (Business Standard)

The disaster has affected several districts, with floodwaters and landslides destroying homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

The August 26 disaster was linked to a major glacial and rock collapse, triggering destructive flooding across areas of Nepal and into Tibet.

Search and rescue operations remain underway across the worst-hit areas.

The scale of the destruction has made recovery difficult, with damaged roads and bridges limiting access to affected communities. Rescue teams have also been searching hydropower projects and tunnels where workers were reported missing.

In a significant development, rescuers recently pulled a Chinese worker alive from a hydropower tunnel after he spent about 10 days trapped underground. A 64-year-old Nepali woman was also rescued from a mud-submerged house, highlighting the possibility of finding survivors even as search operations enter their second week. (AP News)

The flooding has caused widespread damage to Nepal's transport and energy infrastructure.

Early assessments cited by Nepal's disaster management authorities indicate thousands of homes, dozens of roads and more than 100 bridges have been damaged or destroyed. Hydropower projects have also suffered major losses, affecting the country's electricity-generation capacity.

The destruction has complicated both rescue operations and efforts to restore transport links between remote mountain communities.

Tourism sector faces fresh pressure

The disaster has also begun affecting Nepal's tourism industry, an important source of employment and foreign exchange.

The August flooding damaged or disrupted routes and infrastructure in several parts of the country. Concerns have grown that international visitors could assume the entire country remains inaccessible, even though many major destinations and airports continue to operate.

The scale of the disaster has nevertheless led to cancellations and uncertainty during what would normally be an important tourism period.

India closely watches Nepal situation

The disaster also has significance for India because of the close geographic, economic and people-to-people links between the two countries.

Indian nationals have been among those affected by the wider disaster, while India has provided rescue and relief assistance to Nepal. The Indian government has also been coordinating with Nepal over missing citizens and humanitarian support. 

With rivers continuing to respond rapidly to heavy rainfall and unstable terrain, authorities in affected parts of Nepal remain on alert.

For communities in Gorkha, Sunday's Therang River flooding is another warning that the danger has not ended even as large-scale rescue and recovery operations from the August catastrophe continue.
