The Nepal government has declared September 7, 2026, as a national day of mourning in memory of those who lost their lives in the devastating floods that struck the country in late August.

The decision comes as search and rescue operations continue in several flood-affected areas following the August 26 Bhotekoshi River disaster, which caused extensive loss of life and damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure. Nepal's government has been providing regular updates on rescue, relief and recovery operations. 

National Mourning on September 7

The government has designated September 7 as a day to honour the victims of the disaster, particularly those who died in the Rasuwa and Bhotekoshi flood-hit areas.

The decision reflects the scale of the tragedy, with hundreds of people confirmed dead and thousands reported missing in the aftermath of the floods. The government continues to coordinate search and rescue operations in affected districts. 

Search and Rescue Operations Continue

Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has continued publishing situation updates on the Bhotekoshi floods, including information on search operations and people who remain missing.

Authorities are also working to identify recovered bodies and assist families searching for missing relatives. Difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and unstable conditions have complicated rescue and recovery efforts. 

Recent rescue operations have also produced survivors. Two workers were rescued from a hydropower tunnel several days after the disaster, highlighting the continuing efforts to search locations where people may still be trapped.

Extensive Damage Across Flood-Hit Areas

The August 26 disaster affected several districts along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan.

An official situation report from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority recorded extensive casualties and thousands of missing people in the affected areas. The disaster also damaged homes and critical infrastructure, creating a major recovery challenge for the government. 

September 8 to Be Observed Separately

The national mourning day on September 7 should not be confused with the following day's observance.

The Nepal government has declared September 8 as a public holiday for Gen Z Martyrs' Day, making it a separate national observance. 

The two consecutive dates therefore have different purposes: September 7 is dedicated to mourning those killed in the flood disaster, while September 8 commemorates the Gen Z martyrs.

Nepal Continues Relief and Recovery Efforts

The government has appealed for financial assistance to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund and Prime Minister's Relief Fund following the extensive destruction caused by the Bhotekoshi floods.

The scale of the disaster has also drawn international attention, with rescue teams and assistance from outside Nepal supporting the country's ongoing response. 

The September 7 national mourning will provide an opportunity for the country to collectively remember the victims while rescue, relief and reconstruction efforts continue.
