Why Patagonia Could Become Argentina’s Next AI Data Centre Hub

Argentina's Patagonia region is emerging as a potential destination for the next generation of large artificial intelligence data centres, as investors search for locations offering abundant energy, cooler temperatures and large areas of undeveloped land.

The interest comes as the rapid expansion of AI increases demand for data-centre capacity worldwide. Operators are looking for sites where electricity can be generated at scale and cooling costs can be controlled.

Patagonia offers several advantages, including renewable energy resources, shale gas and a cooler climate. But experts caution that the region still faces major infrastructure and connectivity challenges that could prevent investment announcements from quickly becoming operational mega data centres.

Patagonia Draws AI Investors

The rugged and sparsely populated Patagonian landscape offers something increasingly valuable to data-centre developers: space.

Large AI facilities require substantial amounts of electricity and supporting infrastructure. They also generate significant heat, making cooling a major consideration in their design and operating costs.

Patagonia's naturally cooler climate could help reduce some cooling requirements compared with hotter locations.

Argentina's extensive energy resources are another attraction. The region is home to major oil and gas activity, while several areas also have strong potential for renewable power generation.

Neuquen Project Targets 500 MW

In Neuquén province, energy company Pampa Energía is pursuing plans for a major data centre near its Loma de la Lata thermal power plant.

The proposed facility could eventually require as much as 500 megawatts of electricity, according to the report.

Power could be supplied through resources associated with Vaca Muerta, Argentina's major shale oil and gas formation.

The scale illustrates why AI data centres are increasingly being viewed as energy-intensive industrial projects rather than conventional technology facilities.

Vaca Muerta Adds Advantage

Vaca Muerta is central to Argentina's energy ambitions and could provide Patagonia with an important advantage in attracting electricity-hungry industries.

Access to domestic natural gas can support power generation, while the region's renewable-energy potential offers another pathway for developers seeking lower-carbon electricity.

For Argentina, data-centre investment could therefore complement the country's broader efforts to monetise its energy resources and attract capital-intensive industries.

However, simply having energy resources underground does not guarantee that electricity can be delivered reliably to a large computing facility.

Argentina Attracts Investment

Interest in data centres is also benefiting from changes in Argentina's wider investment environment.

President Javier Milei's government has promoted investment through the RIGI incentive regime, which provides tax benefits and regulatory advantages for qualifying large-scale projects.

The policy has helped attract investment interest in sectors including energy and mining.

Argentina is still a relatively small data-centre market. Most existing facilities are concentrated around Buenos Aires, leaving significant room for expansion if infrastructure and investment conditions improve.

Buenos Aires Starts Expansion

Pampa Energía has already agreed to provide 30 MW for the initial stage of a data-centre project in a free-trade zone in Bahía Blanca.

The project offers a more immediate example of Argentina's attempt to develop larger computing infrastructure.

Hyperscale technology companies are assessing potential expansion, while developers are examining locations that previously may not have been considered commercially viable.

The move could eventually create a network of data-centre locations beyond Buenos Aires.

Connectivity Remains Challenge

Energy is only one part of the equation.

Large data centres need high-capacity telecommunications connections, reliable power transmission, access roads and other supporting infrastructure. They also require low-latency connections to users and other data infrastructure.

Patagonia's distance from major population and technology centres can make connectivity more difficult and expensive.

This means that a location with cheap or abundant electricity may still struggle to attract hyperscale operators if it cannot provide sufficiently robust network connections.

Mega Hub Still Uncertain

The potential benefits for Argentina are substantial. Large data-centre projects could attract foreign investment, create specialised jobs and increase demand for energy and supporting infrastructure.

They could also position Argentina as a regional hub for AI computing and cloud services.

But experts caution that announcements should not automatically be treated as confirmed mega projects. Financing, power availability, network connectivity, construction capacity and regulatory approvals will determine whether Patagonia can turn its natural advantages into a sustained data-centre industry.

For now, the region has many of the ingredients investors are looking for. The bigger question is whether Argentina can build the infrastructure needed to turn Patagonia's energy and land advantages into a globally competitive AI computing hub.
