An ancient Hanuman idol at Ujjain’s Sati Gate has reportedly remained in place despite repeated attempts to shift it during road-widening work, prompting religious groups to call it a divine sign.

Road Widening Work Underway

Ujjain’s preparations for the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh have brought an old religious structure at Sati Gate into focus after efforts to relocate a standing Hanuman idol reportedly failed repeatedly.

The idol is located along the route between Kanthal Square and Chhatri Chowk, where road-widening and related development work are underway. According to local reports, the administration planned to shift the temple and relocate the idol as part of the project.

The episode has since attracted the attention of devotees, saints and Hindu organisations, many of whom have opposed the relocation.

Four Attempts Reportedly Fail

Reports said municipal teams began demolition-related work around September 4 and 5. While the temple structure was removed, efforts to move the standing Hanuman idol reportedly did not succeed.

Local reporting said attempts were made several times over a period of days, but the approximately eight-foot idol remained at its original location. A hydraulic machine was reportedly used during the effort.

The failure has generated considerable discussion among devotees, with some describing the incident as a miracle or divine indication.

There is, however, no independent evidence establishing a supernatural explanation for why the idol could not be moved.

Administration Faces Practical Challenge

Reports indicate that officials believe the difficulty could be linked to the structure beneath the idol. The visible portion of the idol may be only part of a larger foundation or stone structure extending below ground level.

The exact depth and construction of the foundation have reportedly not yet been established. This has made mechanical removal more complicated than initially expected.

Idol Kept Under Protection

With the temple structure reportedly demolished, arrangements have been made to protect the idol from exposure. A canopy has been placed over the area, according to local reports.

Devotees have continued visiting the site and offering prayers. The issue has also attracted the involvement of the Archaeological Survey of India, according to reports, amid questions about the history and age of the idol.

History Of The Temple Under Review

Local accounts describe the temple as roughly 170 years old, dating to around the 19th century. There have also been claims linking the idol to a much earlier period, including the Paramara era and the reign of King Bhoj.

Those older-origin claims have not been conclusively established. Historical dating would require proper archaeological and material examination.

The distinction is important because devotional traditions and historical evidence do not necessarily establish the same date or origin.

Saints Call It Divine Sign

The failed relocation has prompted saints and devotees to interpret the development through a religious lens. Some have argued that the idol's refusal to move despite machinery being used is evidence of divine intervention.

Officials, however, must deal with the issue through administrative, structural and heritage considerations.

The episode has therefore become a sensitive issue as Ujjain prepares for the 2028 Simhastha, when the city is expected to witness a major increase in pilgrims and infrastructure activity.
