Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is scheduled to travel to London on September 10 for his first official overseas visit since taking office. The visit is expected to focus on attracting fresh investments to the State, engaging with multinational companies and facilitating the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

The proposed foreign tour comes at a politically significant time for the Vijay-led government. Alongside the overseas investment push, the administration has also deferred the planned launch of its flagship ‘Thaai Maman Thanga Mothiram’ gold ring scheme for newborns. The scheme was originally scheduled to be launched on September 15.

Vijay Set for London Visit

Vijay is expected to leave Chennai for London on September 10 and spend several days in the United Kingdom. The trip is being positioned as an investment outreach exercise, with the Chief Minister expected to meet European business leaders and present Tamil Nadu as an attractive destination for global companies.

Senior officials from departments including industries and finance are also expected to be associated with the investment meetings. The proposed visit follows the State government's recent efforts to expand its engagement with international investors.

MoUs With Global Companies

During the London visit, the Tamil Nadu government is expected to pursue investment proposals across multiple sectors. Some memoranda of understanding with multinational companies are likely to be signed in the presence of the Chief Minister.

The visit comes soon after the Vettri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2026, where the government announced investment commitments of around ₹1.02 lakh crore through 104 MoUs. Officials are looking to build on those commitments by taking the State's investment pitch directly to European companies.

Gold Ring Scheme Deferred

The proposed foreign tour has also affected the schedule of the government's gold ring initiative for newborns.

The ‘Thaai Maman Thanga Mothiram’ scheme was initially scheduled for a September 15 launch. Health Minister K.G. Arun Raj confirmed that the programme has been postponed because of Vijay's overseas trip. A revised official launch date was yet to be announced at the time of the latest reports.

The programme envisages giving a one-gram gold ring to eligible newborns delivered at government health facilities in Tamil Nadu.

Scheme Covers Newborn Babies

The initiative was announced ahead of the Assembly election and is based on the Tamil cultural tradition of ‘Thaimaaman Seer’, under which a maternal uncle traditionally gives gifts to a newborn.

Under the government order, eligible children born at government institutions will receive the ring irrespective of birth order or gender. The scheme will have retrospective effect from June 22, Vijay's birthday.

The State has allocated around ₹755.83 crore annually for the programme. Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will oversee procurement and supply of the rings to government institutions.

Nearly Four Lakh Rings Planned

The scale of the scheme is substantial because government hospitals account for a significant share of deliveries in the State.

Reports based on government data indicate that Tamil Nadu records around 7.8 lakh deliveries annually, with government facilities accounting for roughly 4.2 lakh deliveries. The programme is therefore expected to cover a large number of families each year.

The government has also said that the initiative is intended to encourage families to choose public healthcare facilities for childbirth while giving the programme a cultural and emotional dimension.

Political Agenda Also in Focus

Vijay's London visit comes amid important political developments within the ruling coalition. Before his overseas engagement, the TVK leadership is working on strengthening coordination among alliance partners.

A meeting is expected to discuss the proposed common minimum programme, steering committee and formal identity of the alliance. Congress, VCK, IUML and MDMK have indicated participation, while the Left parties have decided to stay away from the formal meeting.

The developments add another layer to Vijay's busy schedule as the government attempts to balance political coordination with its economic agenda.

Investment Push Takes Centre Stage

The London visit represents an early international test for Vijay's government as it seeks to turn investment commitments into actual projects, employment and industrial expansion.

For Tamil Nadu, attracting multinational companies remains a major policy priority, particularly in manufacturing, technology and emerging industries. Vijay's meetings in London are therefore expected to focus not only on securing new MoUs but also on strengthening the State's profile among European investors.

Meanwhile, the deferred gold ring scheme is likely to return to the government's immediate domestic agenda after the Chief Minister's overseas engagement. The administration is expected to announce the revised launch schedule separately.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C Joseph Vijay will chair a crucial alliance coordination meeting in Chennai on Wednesday as his ruling coalition faces differences with the Congress and a boycott by the Left parties.

The meeting is expected to focus on formalising the alliance structure, preparing a common minimum programme, setting up a joint steering committee and finalising an official identity based on secularism and social justice.

However, the absence of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India, along with an emerging dispute with Congress over national leadership, has added uncertainty to the talks.

Alliance Partners To Attend

Major parties supporting the TVK government are expected to participate in Wednesday's meeting.

Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) have confirmed their participation, according to reports.

The meeting will be the second major coordination exercise involving the parties supporting the Vijay-led government. The first such meeting was held on July 1, when discussions included the possibility of creating a formal alliance structure and establishing mechanisms for coordination.

Left Parties Skip Meeting

The CPI(M) and CPI have decided to stay away from Wednesday's meeting, marking their second consecutive boycott of formal alliance discussions.

CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam said the party would continue to extend issue-based outside support to the government to maintain stability in the Assembly.

The Left parties have so far avoided joining the government and want to retain the freedom to independently raise issues concerning workers, farmers, agriculture and other public matters.

The CPI has also decided not to attend the meeting.

Congress Faces Leadership Rift

The alliance meeting comes amid growing differences between TVK and Congress over the question of national leadership.

Some TVK leaders and ministers have projected Vijay as a possible prime ministerial face for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Congress leaders, however, have made it clear that they continue to back Rahul Gandhi as the national opposition bloc's preferred leader.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore has repeatedly stated that Rahul Gandhi remains the party's choice for the 2029 general election. AICC general secretary K C Venugopal has also backed this position.

The TVK leadership has attempted to contain the controversy by describing statements favouring Vijay as the personal views of individual lawmakers rather than an official party position.

Vijay's National Ambitions

The discussion over Vijay's potential national role has emerged only months after the formation of his government.

Congress leaders have maintained that Vijay's immediate responsibility is to govern Tamil Nadu, while the party's national leadership question should not become a source of friction within the state coalition.

The issue has nevertheless exposed different political ambitions among the alliance partners ahead of future local body and Lok Sabha elections.

Common Programme On Agenda

Apart from political leadership, the meeting is expected to focus on the coalition's governance roadmap.

A common minimum programme is among the key proposals under consideration. The alliance is also expected to work towards a joint steering committee that can coordinate decisions among the constituent parties.

The proposed political identity is expected to emphasise secularism and social justice, while also addressing issues specific to Tamil Nadu.

Thin Majority Adds Pressure

The TVK government operates with a relatively narrow majority and depends on support from several alliance partners.

Congress has five MLAs, while VCK, IUML and the Left parties have smaller but important numbers in the Assembly. This makes maintaining cooperation among the parties crucial for the government's stability.

The Left's decision to remain outside the formal alliance structure therefore does not immediately mean withdrawal of support, but it gives the parties greater freedom to oppose government decisions on individual issues.

Road Ahead for TVK

Wednesday's meeting is likely to provide an important indication of how effectively Vijay can manage differences among his allies while strengthening the coalition ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.

For TVK, the immediate task is to establish a functioning coordination mechanism without alienating parties that support the government from outside.

At the same time, the Congress disagreement over the 2029 leadership question and the Left's refusal to join formal alliance talks remain significant challenges. How Vijay handles these competing demands could shape the stability and political direction of the coalition in the months ahead.
