Sagar Hooch Tragedy: A key accused in the Madhya Pradesh spurious liquor case was arrested after an exchange of fire with police in Sagar district early Friday. Police said Ravi Lakhera, 45, sustained a bullet injury to his leg, while two alleged accomplices escaped on a motorcycle.

The arrest comes days after the spurious liquor tragedy claimed 16 lives in Sagar district, with dozens of other people undergoing treatment at hospitals.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Jayveer Bahdoriya, police intercepted Lakhera in the Baraytha forest, around 40 km from Sagar district headquarters. An exchange of fire followed, during which Lakhera was shot in the leg.

He was subsequently taken to a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, for treatment. Police sources said his condition was stable.

Police Track Accused to Forest Area

The police operation followed the search for those allegedly linked to the manufacture and distribution of the spurious liquor blamed for the deaths.

Bahdoriya said two other men travelling with Lakhera on a motorcycle managed to flee from the spot. Their identities and whereabouts were not immediately disclosed.

Police are expected to question Lakhera as part of the investigation into the alleged supply chain behind the liquor that left several people dead and others hospitalised.

The encounter and subsequent arrest could provide investigators with information about the alleged manufacturing network, suppliers and distribution channels.

25 Criminal Cases Against Lakhera

Police sources said Lakhera, originally from Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh, is a resident of Gangapuram Colony in neighbouring Lalitpur district.

He allegedly has around 25 criminal cases registered against him across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and other places, with several cases reportedly linked to the Excise Act.

Police also said Lakhera was wanted in connection with a 2025 case registered at Baheriya police station in Sagar over alleged illegal liquor brewing.

Investigators have further alleged that he had experience in liquor manufacturing and procuring materials used in production.

These allegations will form part of the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.

Alleged Link to Licensed Liquor Contractor

According to police allegations cited in the case, Lakhera was involved in manufacturing spurious liquor along with licensed liquor contractor Manish Lodhi, also known as Yashwant Singh Lodhi.

The illegally produced liquor was allegedly distributed through peddlers in parts of Sagar district.

Authorities are now investigating how the liquor entered circulation, who manufactured it, how it was transported and who ultimately supplied it to consumers.

The answers could be crucial in determining the wider network behind the tragedy.

16 Dead, 32 Under Treatment

The spurious liquor tragedy has so far left 16 people dead, while another 32 people were undergoing treatment at different hospitals, according to officials cited in the report.

Of the 30 people named as accused, officials said 16 had been arrested and one detained.

The figures may change as the investigation and medical treatment continue.

The deaths have intensified scrutiny of illegal liquor production and enforcement of excise regulations in the region.

Judicial Probe Ordered by Mohan Yadav

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered a judicial inquiry into the deaths.

The move is aimed at examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including the alleged production and distribution of spurious liquor and possible lapses in enforcement.

The political fallout has also begun.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has accused the Madhya Pradesh government of protecting the liquor mafia, a political allegation that the government will have to respond to through the ongoing investigation and inquiry.

The CPI(M) has also questioned an earlier statement by the Sagar superintendent of police that the spurious liquor had been supplied from Lalitpur.

Investigation Now Moves to the Supply Network

Lakhera's arrest is potentially significant because investigators can now seek to establish the chain connecting alleged manufacturers, material suppliers, transporters and local distributors.

However, an arrest following a police encounter does not by itself establish guilt. The allegations against Lakhera and other accused will have to be tested through the investigation and judicial process.

For the families of those who died, the immediate issue is accountability.

The larger question for Madhya Pradesh is whether action after the deaths can prevent the next tragedy — particularly in areas where illegal liquor networks can operate outside the formal licensing system.

The judicial inquiry, police investigation and prosecution will now determine whether the Sagar tragedy results in accountability beyond individual arrests.
