Russia sees India as a major partner in the aviation sector, Andrianov, an official associated with Russian Helicopters, said as the two countries explore opportunities to expand cooperation in aviation and aerospace.

Calling India a “big partner” in the field, Andrianov highlighted the potential for deeper engagement between Russian and Indian aviation companies at a time when bilateral economic ties are gaining momentum around the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

The comments come against the backdrop of a broader push to expand India-Russia cooperation beyond traditional defence ties and into civil aviation, regional aircraft, maintenance and manufacturing.

India Seen as a Key Aviation Market

India's rapidly expanding aviation sector has made the country an increasingly important market for global aircraft and helicopter manufacturers.

For Russia, India is also a familiar partner. Russian-origin aircraft and helicopters have operated in India for decades, creating an established ecosystem involving maintenance, technical expertise and defence aviation.

The opportunity now is to build on that foundation through newer commercial and industrial projects.

Cooperation Moves Beyond Traditional Defence Ties

India-Russia aviation cooperation has historically been closely associated with military equipment. However, recent developments point towards a wider commercial relationship.

Russia's United Aircraft Corporation has recently signed preliminary agreements involving 85 Il-114-300 regional turboprop aircraft for Indian entities Pinnacle Air and Sleek Aviation. The agreements are not yet firm aircraft orders, but Russia hopes to finalise contracts by the end of the year.

The proposed projects also include plans for a training centre and further cooperation aimed at developing aviation capabilities in India.

Regional Aviation Offers New Opportunities

The regional aviation segment is particularly significant for India as airlines look to connect smaller cities and underserved routes.

Russian manufacturers are positioning the Il-114-300 for this market, including potential operations linked to India's regional connectivity ambitions.

The aircraft is designed for regional routes and could potentially complement India's efforts to expand air connectivity beyond major metropolitan centres.

At the same time, any large-scale deployment would depend on regulatory approvals, commercial viability, financing and the ability of manufacturers to establish reliable support infrastructure.

Push for Local Manufacturing

The emerging cooperation is not limited to aircraft sales.

India and Russia are also discussing ways to develop aviation manufacturing capabilities within India. The two countries have been exploring cooperation involving the SJ-100 regional jet, including possible localisation of production.

Such projects fit India's broader objective of developing domestic aerospace capabilities and increasing the country's role in global aviation manufacturing.

For Russia, local production in India could provide access to one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets while creating a longer-term industrial partnership.

Helicopter Cooperation Remains Important

The helicopter segment remains another important pillar of the relationship.

India has extensive experience operating Russian-origin helicopters, particularly in the defence sector. This existing familiarity provides a potential base for cooperation in maintenance, upgrades, technology and future platforms.

Andrianov's remarks therefore come at a time when both countries are looking at how established aviation ties can be translated into newer commercial and industrial opportunities.

BRICS Summit Adds Momentum

The aviation discussions coincide with the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where India and Russia are also seeking to expand economic cooperation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in India for the summit, while business and government delegations from both countries are discussing trade, investment, technology and industrial cooperation.

The BRICS Business Forum has also placed greater emphasis on resilient supply chains, innovation and predictable business conditions—areas that could support cross-border aviation projects.

A Broader India-Russia Aviation Partnership

The latest comments underline an important shift in the India-Russia relationship: aviation is increasingly being discussed not only in terms of military platforms but also as a potential area for commercial aircraft, regional connectivity, manufacturing and technical cooperation.

The challenge will be converting preliminary proposals and expressions of interest into final contracts and commercially sustainable projects.

If that happens, aviation could become another significant pillar of India's expanding economic engagement with Russia.
