Baurasi, a resident of Bhagirathpura, was admitted to the Government Super Speciality Hospital on Saturday after his health deteriorated. Family members alleged that he developed vomiting and diarrhoea on Friday, symptoms widely reported among residents affected by contaminated water supply in the area. He died on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment.

However, the health department has attributed his death to pre-existing medical conditions. Officials stated that an angiography report from 2018–19 showed Baurasi had heart disease, along with hypertension and diabetes. According to the department, available hospital records do not medically confirm vomiting or diarrhoea as the cause of death.

At present, ten patients affected by suspected water contamination are undergoing treatment at the Government Super Speciality Hospital, four of whom are in the Intensive Care Unit. Hospital authorities said the condition of one male and one female patient remains critical.

The crisis has largely affected Bhagirathpura and nearby localities, where residents have complained of foul-smelling and discoloured water over the past several weeks. Pipeline repair work is currently underway in the area as civic authorities attempt to contain the spread of infection.

Baurasi was not only a political figure but also an active community representative. He served on the Laxmibai Nagar Railway Station Development Committee and the Railway Police Safety Committee. During the peak of the water contamination crisis, he played a visible role in coordinating between residents and the district administration, helping affected families raise complaints and seek medical assistance. He also participated in protests organised by the Congress party over the issue.

Earlier fatalities include 63-year-old Badri Prasad, who died on Friday after his condition worsened following an earlier hospital discharge, and 82-year-old Vidya Bai, who succumbed to complications after prolonged illness and a fall linked to severe weakness caused by vomiting and diarrhoea.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation while collecting water samples from affected areas. The administration has urged residents to avoid consuming tap water and rely on boiled or packaged water until the supply is declared safe.

The incident has renewed political pressure on civic authorities, with opposition leaders demanding accountability, compensation for victims’ families, and a comprehensive audit of Indore’s water distribution system to prevent further loss of life.
