Sharad Pawar NDA Rumours: NCP (SP) Rejects Speculation After Meeting with Eknath Shinde

NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) has dismissed reports of joining the NDA after Sharad Pawar's meeting with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde sparked political speculation in Maharashtra.

Speculation over Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar possibly joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or altering his party's political alignment gathered momentum in Maharashtra on Thursday. However, the NCP (SP) strongly dismissed the reports, calling them "baseless" and alleging that they were aimed at weakening the Opposition alliance ahead of key political developments in the state.

The rumours surfaced a day after Sharad Pawar attended a high-level meeting on the long-pending Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute at the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai. Following the meeting, Pawar met his party MLAs inside the office of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a move that triggered widespread political speculation.

Party Rejects NDA Claims

Responding to the reports, Maharashtra NCP (SP) president Shashikant Shinde categorically denied any possibility of the party joining the NDA. He described the reports as "rumours" and maintained that they were being circulated to create confusion within the Opposition camp.

The clarification came amid growing political discussions suggesting that the Sharad Pawar-led faction could either align with the BJP-led NDA or consider a merger with the Congress. Party leaders, however, reiterated that no such proposal had been discussed within the organisation.

Meeting with Shinde Triggers Speculation

The political buzz intensified after Sharad Pawar's visit to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's chamber immediately after the state government's committee meeting on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue.

The veteran leader also interacted with NCP (SP) MLAs at Shinde's office, leading to speculation about a possible shift in political equations.

Adding to the intrigue, reports also highlighted a recent meeting between BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde and senior NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil at a hotel in Mumbai, although neither side indicated that the interaction carried any political significance.

Jayant Patil Explains the Meeting

Senior NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil dismissed suggestions that Sharad Pawar's meeting in Shinde's office reflected any political understanding with the ruling alliance.

According to Patil, the venue was chosen purely for logistical convenience. He explained that party MLAs wanted to meet Pawar before leaving the Vidhan Bhavan, and since the Deputy Chief Minister's office was located close to the exit, it was considered the most practical place for the interaction, particularly keeping in mind Pawar's age and health.

Differences Within Opposition Surface

The developments have also triggered fresh tensions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the Opposition alliance comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP).

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticised Pawar's meeting with Eknath Shinde, describing it as the "glorification of traitors." At the same time, Raut expressed confidence that Sharad Pawar would not join the NDA and said he intended to discuss the matter directly with the veteran leader.

Responding to the criticism, NCP (SP) spokesperson Amol Matele defended Pawar's visit, stating that meeting a Deputy Chief Minister occupying a constitutional office should not be viewed through a political lens.

Matele argued that a leader with over five decades of political experience did not require advice on political decisions. He added that discussions on issues such as the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute, drought relief, reservations and development were part of normal governance.

He also questioned why Pawar's meetings with Opposition leaders were considered politically appropriate while his interaction with Eknath Shinde was being interpreted differently.

Political Significance Ahead of Future Elections

Although the NCP (SP) has firmly denied reports of joining the NDA, the episode has highlighted the fragile political atmosphere in Maharashtra, where every high-profile meeting is being closely watched for signs of changing alliances.

With state politics expected to intensify in the coming months, leaders across parties are likely to remain under scrutiny as speculation over potential realignments continues.

Mahayuti Has ‘No Entry’ for Opposition Leaders? Fadnavis’ Remark Sparks Debate Over Maharashtra’s Political Strategy

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ recent remarks suggesting that there is no need to induct leaders from opposition parties into the ruling Mahayuti alliance have triggered fresh political discussions in the state. The statement has drawn attention because it comes at a time when Maharashtra politics has repeatedly witnessed defections, party realignments and accusations of “Operation Lotus” from opposition camps.

For years, political parties across the spectrum have accused rivals of encouraging defections to strengthen their electoral position. Against that backdrop, Fadnavis’ comments are being viewed as a significant political message, both within the BJP and among its allies.

Political observers say the statement appears aimed at projecting confidence within the ruling alliance. Mahayuti, which includes the BJP and its allies, currently holds power in Maharashtra and has maintained that it enjoys sufficient political strength without relying on fresh entrants from rival parties.

The remark has also revived discussions about the BJP’s approach to leaders who switch sides before elections. In recent years, several prominent politicians from opposition parties have joined the BJP or its allies in different states, often leading to criticism from rival parties. Opposition leaders have repeatedly alleged that such moves are part of a broader strategy to weaken political opponents.

However, supporters of the ruling alliance argue that political leaders are free to choose their affiliations and that defections are a common feature of democratic politics. They maintain that parties should be judged by their governance and public support rather than by the number of leaders joining or leaving.

Within political circles, there is now speculation over whether Fadnavis’ statement reflects a genuine shift in strategy or is intended to reinforce the BJP’s public image ahead of future electoral contests. Some analysts believe the ruling alliance may be trying to send a message to its core cadre that loyal party workers will continue to receive priority over leaders arriving from rival camps.

The issue is particularly relevant in Maharashtra, where political equations have undergone dramatic changes over the past few years. Splits within major parties, coalition realignments and leadership battles have transformed the state's political landscape, making questions of loyalty and party identity increasingly important.

Opposition parties, meanwhile, have reacted cautiously to the statement. Some leaders have suggested that political realities often differ from public declarations and that future developments will reveal whether the ruling alliance strictly follows the position outlined by the chief minister.

The debate has also highlighted a broader challenge faced by major political parties. While bringing influential leaders into a party can strengthen electoral prospects in the short term, it can sometimes create dissatisfaction among long-time workers who feel overlooked. Balancing expansion with organisational discipline remains a delicate task for every major political formation.

At present, there has been no indication of any formal policy change regarding induction of leaders from rival parties. Nevertheless, Fadnavis’ remarks have generated considerable discussion because they touch on an issue that has shaped Maharashtra politics for much of the past decade.

Whether the statement signals a long-term political strategy or serves primarily as a message of confidence and organisational discipline remains to be seen. For now, it has succeeded in shifting attention back to the continuing debate over defections, political loyalty and the future direction of Maharashtra’s ruling alliance.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday strongly defended the Mumbai-Pune Missing Link Expressway project in the state Assembly, rejecting allegations of corruption and poor construction following a recent landslide on the route. Responding to criticism from the Opposition, Fadnavis said he was prepared to face personal attacks but would not tolerate attempts to tarnish Maharashtra's image.

Speaking during a discussion on the development of Mumbai and its satellite cities, the Chief Minister accused Opposition leaders of spreading misinformation after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide on the recently inaugurated ₹7,000-crore infrastructure project. The incident had disrupted traffic for nearly 18 hours, prompting allegations that the project suffered from structural flaws and financial irregularities.

CM Rejects Corruption Allegations

Fadnavis dismissed claims that the landslide reflected poor construction quality, stating that the main structure of the expressway remained completely safe.

According to him, continuous heavy rainfall caused debris from a nearby hill to fall onto an outer arch of the structure, which was damaged by the impact. He clarified that the tunnel itself suffered no cracks and that all integrated safety systems functioned as designed.

The Chief Minister said emergency response teams acted immediately after the incident. Heavy cranes reached the site within minutes, and authorities cleared the debris and restored traffic within 18 hours.

‘Project Will Stand for Decades’

Responding to criticism on social media, Fadnavis said he had become "abuse-proof" after years in public life.

He remarked that while political opponents were free to criticise him personally, they should refrain from defaming Maharashtra. He expressed confidence that the Mumbai-Pune Missing Link would continue serving the public for decades and remain a landmark infrastructure project.

The Chief Minister also alleged that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had shelved the project by citing multiple reasons why it could not be executed, adding that the present government took the political and administrative decisions necessary to complete it.

Engineering Achievement Highlighted

Fadnavis described the Missing Link as one of India's most ambitious road infrastructure projects.

He noted that the route includes India's tallest cable-stayed bridge and some of the world's widest twin tunnels, designed to bypass the accident-prone old Mumbai-Pune ghat section and significantly reduce travel time.

He argued that engineering challenges are common in large infrastructure projects and should not be viewed as evidence of failure.

Konkan Railway Example

Drawing a comparison with the Konkan Railway, the Chief Minister recalled that the railway line also experienced frequent landslides during its early years.

He said those challenges were gradually overcome through improved engineering solutions, adding that fear of natural hazards should never prevent the execution of transformative infrastructure projects.

Monsoon Relief Measures Reviewed

Fadnavis also briefed the Assembly on the state's response to heavy monsoon rains affecting several districts.

He said areas including Vasai-Virar received exceptionally high rainfall, leading to disruptions in electricity supply and communication networks. Disaster management teams have been deployed to restore essential services, while emergency financial assistance and free food distribution have been arranged for affected residents in the Konkan region.

₹1,032 Crore Savings Claimed

The Chief Minister further announced that shifting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) procurement system to the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal helped cancel inflated tenders worth approximately ₹1,032 crore, resulting in substantial savings for the public exchequer.

Concluding his address, Fadnavis quoted a famous Urdu couplet about courage and perseverance, saying that true leadership requires taking bold decisions despite criticism and challenges.

Ahead of Monsoon Session, NDA Eyes Two-Thirds Majority; Sharad Pawar Camp’s MPs Under Spotlight

With Parliament’s Monsoon Session approaching, political activity has intensified in New Delhi as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is reportedly exploring ways to further strengthen its numbers in both Houses. Amid these discussions, attention has turned to a group of MPs associated with Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), raising fresh speculation about possible political realignments.

The development comes at a time when the NDA is seeking to consolidate its position ahead of several key legislative and political battles. While the alliance already enjoys a comfortable majority in the Lok Sabha, political observers believe expanding its support base could help it pursue a broader legislative agenda with greater ease.

According to political sources, the focus has shifted to a section of MPs linked to veteran leader Sharad Pawar. Reports suggesting possible outreach efforts have triggered discussions within Maharashtra’s political circles, although no formal announcement has been made by either side regarding any potential shift in allegiance.

The timing of the speculation is significant. The Monsoon Session is expected to witness debates on important policy matters and government initiatives. In such a scenario, strengthening parliamentary numbers carries both legislative and symbolic importance for the ruling alliance.

Sharad Pawar remains one of the most influential figures in Maharashtra politics despite the divisions that have reshaped the Nationalist Congress Party in recent years. The political landscape in the state has undergone major changes following splits within both the NCP and Shiv Sena, leading to new alliances and shifting equations.

Against this backdrop, any movement involving MPs associated with Pawar’s camp would be closely watched not only in Maharashtra but also at the national level. Political analysts note that even speculation about defections can influence negotiations, alliance dynamics and future electoral strategies.

Leaders from the opposition have repeatedly accused the BJP of attempting to weaken rival parties by attracting their elected representatives. The ruling party, however, has consistently maintained that leaders and lawmakers choose to join the NDA voluntarily based on political conviction and development-oriented governance.

While discussions around numbers continue, there has been no official confirmation that any MPs from Sharad Pawar’s faction are preparing to switch sides. Sources familiar with the developments suggest that political conversations remain fluid and that several factors could influence future decisions.

The NDA’s broader objective appears to be ensuring maximum parliamentary strength as it enters an important phase of governance. A stronger position in Parliament can help the government navigate legislative challenges and build consensus around key proposals.

For the opposition bloc, meanwhile, maintaining unity remains a major priority. Any reduction in numbers could affect not only parliamentary strategy but also perceptions ahead of future elections. As a result, developments involving regional parties and their MPs are being monitored closely.

The coming weeks are likely to bring greater clarity as Parliament convenes and political negotiations continue behind the scenes. Until then, speculation over numbers, alliances and potential realignments is expected to remain a major talking point in national politics.

Whether the NDA succeeds in moving closer to the two-thirds mark or the opposition manages to hold its ranks together will be one of the key political stories to watch during the Monsoon Session.

Mumbai was politically charged on Friday as both factions of Shiv Sena marked the party's 60th foundation day with separate rallies — and Uddhav Thackeray used the occasion to address the most serious internal crisis his group has faced since the 2022 split that cost him the Maharashtra government.

Speaking at Shanmukhananda Hall in Sion, Uddhav struck a combative tone. "If you do not trust or believe in me, I am ready to step down as party chief," he told party workers, even as he sought to project confidence. He insisted Shiv Sainiks were not disheartened by the rebellion of six MPs and remained full of enthusiasm. In a pointed remark that drew attention, he said Congress — his current alliance partner — had never tried to destroy Shiv Sena, unlike the BJP. He also warned that the country was drifting toward a "one party, no elections" system, calling it a threat to democracy.

Across the city, Eknath Shinde's faction held its rally at NESCO Center in Goregaon, with large hoardings of Balasaheb Thackeray, Anand Dighe, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Shinde himself lining the approach roads. The central question hanging over the Shinde event was whether the six rebel MPs would make a public appearance there — sources within the ruling camp suggested they might attend, though no official confirmation had come through by Friday morning.

The rebellion had been building through the week. On June 15, reports of an "Operation Tiger" — an alleged effort to peel away Uddhav's MPs — began circulating, with the Uddhav faction initially dismissing them. By June 16, the MPs had reportedly been brought to Delhi. Sanjay Raut alleged that inducements of up to Rs 50 crore had been offered to MPs to switch sides. On June 17, Shinde faction leaders claimed six MPs had agreed to form a separate group, prompting Raut, Anil Desai and Arvind Sawant to rush to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The rebels then formally skipped the parliamentary party meeting on June 18 and submitted a letter to the Speaker explaining their position.

In that letter, the six MPs alleged that senior leaders in the Uddhav camp were working toward merging Shiv Sena (UBT) with Congress, and that the party had strayed from its foundational ideology. Senior Sena leader Chandrakant Khaire described the episode as part of the ongoing Operation Tiger exercise in Maharashtra.

The arithmetic matters here. Shiv Sena (UBT) has nine Lok Sabha MPs. Six of them breaking away crosses the two-thirds threshold stipulated under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution — the provision that governs disqualification for defection. Legal experts note this could shield the rebels from immediate disqualification and bolster their claim to recognition as a separate group, though they may eventually need to merge with a recognised political party to consolidate their standing.

This is the second major fracture in Shiv Sena in under four years. In June 2022, Eknath Shinde's rebellion involving 39 MLAs brought down Uddhav's government. The Election Commission subsequently recognised the Shinde faction as the official Shiv Sena and awarded it the party's bow-and-arrow symbol. The current parliamentary revolt threatens to further erode what remains of Uddhav's political organisation.

Further developments are expected as the foundation day events conclude and the rebels' next move becomes clearer.

A fresh political crisis appears to be unfolding within Shiv Sena (UBT) after only three of the party’s nine Lok Sabha MPs attended a crucial parliamentary party meeting in New Delhi. The development has intensified speculation about a possible split within the party, with six MPs reportedly distancing themselves from the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction and moving closer to the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The meeting, convened under a party whip requiring all MPs to be present, was attended only by Anil Desai, Arvind Sawant, and Rajabhau Waje. Following the meeting, party leaders indicated that disciplinary action could be initiated against those who remained absent.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant said notices would be issued to the MPs who failed to attend the gathering. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut alleged that pressure tactics were being used against party lawmakers and claimed that those absent from the meeting had chosen a path contrary to the party's interests.

The political tension escalated further after the Union Home Ministry reportedly directed Maharashtra Police to strengthen Y+ category security cover for the six MPs considered part of the rebel group. According to sources, these MPs submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition of a separate parliamentary group and a merger with the Shinde faction.

Three Days of Political Turmoil

The controversy began on June 15 when reports surfaced suggesting that six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs were in contact with leaders from the Shinde camp. The alleged operation, dubbed "Operation Tiger" in political circles, fueled speculation about another major split within the party.

On June 16, Sanjay Raut claimed that attempts were being made to engineer defections through financial inducements. He alleged that offers worth ₹50 crore had been made to MPs to switch allegiance, though no evidence was publicly presented to support the claim.

The following day, leaders from the Shinde faction publicly asserted that six MPs had signed documents seeking to form a separate bloc. Later, Raut, Sawant and Desai met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and urged him not to recognize any merger or separate group without first hearing the Uddhav Thackeray faction.

Anti-Defection Law in Focus

The reported rebellion carries significant legal implications because Shiv Sena (UBT) currently has nine MPs in the Lok Sabha. Under the anti-defection provisions, at least two-thirds of legislators or MPs must support a split to avoid disqualification.

With six MPs constituting exactly two-thirds of the parliamentary party, the rebel group could potentially seek protection under the merger provisions of the law if procedural requirements are fulfilled. Political observers say this legal threshold makes the current developments particularly significant.

The situation has drawn comparisons with the dramatic split of 2022, when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion involving 39 MLAs and eventually formed a separate Shiv Sena faction.

Wider Political Implications

The latest developments come ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, where political alignments are expected to play a crucial role. Opposition parties have accused the BJP of encouraging defections to strengthen the National Democratic Alliance's numbers in the Lok Sabha.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that efforts were being made to weaken opposition parties and move closer to a two-thirds majority required for major constitutional amendments. The BJP has not officially responded to these allegations.

Political analysts believe the outcome of the Shiv Sena (UBT) crisis could influence broader opposition dynamics, particularly as parties prepare for future legislative battles and electoral contests.

For now, all eyes remain on the six absent MPs and the Lok Sabha Speaker's response, which could determine the next chapter in Maharashtra's evolving political landscape.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Calls Crucial MP Meeting Amid Reports of Fresh Split

Shiv Sena (UBT) has directed all nine Lok Sabha MPs to attend a key parliamentary meeting as reports suggest six MPs may seek a merger with the Shinde-led faction.

A fresh political storm appears to be brewing in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) has issued a whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs, making attendance mandatory at a parliamentary party meeting scheduled in New Delhi on Thursday. The move comes amid reports that six of the party's nine MPs may be preparing to align with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, potentially triggering another major split within the party.

The meeting has been convened to discuss organizational and political developments at a time when speculation about internal dissent has intensified. According to party sources, the gathering will take place at 11 a.m. at the parliamentary party office within the Parliament House complex.

Reports suggest that a group of six MPs may have submitted a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition for a merger with the Shinde faction. However, neither the Speaker’s Office nor the MPs concerned have officially confirmed these claims.

The development has raised concerns within the Uddhav Thackeray-led camp, which has already witnessed a significant split in 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion involving 39 MLAs, eventually forming a separate faction and taking control of the original Shiv Sena name and symbol.

Political Tensions Escalate

Among the MPs reportedly linked to the rebellion are Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Sanjay Dina Patil. Earlier on Wednesday, Sanjay Dina Patil publicly dismissed reports of leaving the party, adding further uncertainty to the situation.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut launched a sharp attack on the rebel lawmakers during a press conference in Delhi. Raut accused the MPs of betraying the party and questioned their political loyalty.

Only three of the party’s nine Lok Sabha MPs — Anil Desai, Rajabhau Waje, and Arvind Sawant — were present alongside Raut during the media interaction. He challenged the remaining MPs to publicly clarify their position and reject the speculation surrounding the reported split.

Anti-Defection Law in Focus

The reported rebellion has gained significance due to provisions under India's anti-defection law. Shiv Sena (UBT) currently has nine MPs in the Lok Sabha. Under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, at least two-thirds of a party's legislators must support a split or merger to avoid disqualification.

If six MPs move together, they would meet the required threshold, potentially strengthening their legal position. Political analysts, however, note that merely forming a separate group may not be sufficient. A formal merger with another recognized political party or faction could be necessary to secure protection under the law.

The situation is being closely watched as it could alter political equations in Maharashtra and influence opposition unity efforts ahead of future electoral contests.

Congress has also entered the debate. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that the BJP leadership was attempting to weaken opposition parties by encouraging defections. He claimed such efforts were aimed at strengthening the ruling party’s position in Parliament.

For Shiv Sena (UBT), the coming days are likely to be crucial. The outcome of Thursday’s parliamentary party meeting may determine whether the party can contain internal dissent or faces another significant organizational setback. Political observers believe the developments could have a lasting impact on Maharashtra's political landscape and the broader opposition bloc at the national level.

Fresh speculation of another split in the Shiv Sena has surfaced after the Shinde faction claimed that seven MPs from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) are in touch with them and may switch sides soon.

Shiv Sena (Shinde) MLC Krupal Tumane told ANI that quiet discussions have been going on for the past month under what he called “Operation Tiger”. He said the process is now in its final stage and the MPs could join the Shinde group before the Monsoon Session of Parliament begins.

The claim has triggered a fresh round of political activity in Maharashtra, where the Thackeray family’s control over the party has been under strain ever since the 2022 rebellion led by Eknath Shinde.

Uddhav Thackeray, during a meeting with party MPs on June 14, reportedly took a calm but firm stand. According to those familiar with the meeting, he told leaders that anyone who wants to leave the party is free to do so and would not be stopped. He referred to the 2022 split, saying he had known about the rebellion then but chose not to pressure anyone to stay.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Deshmukh met Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav in Delhi on Monday. Deshmukh had skipped the Sunday party meeting, citing family reasons. His meeting with the minister has added to the buzz, though no official confirmation of any switch has come yet.

Sanjay Raut, the sharp-tongued UBT MP, quickly dismissed the claims as baseless. He asserted that all party MPs remain loyal to Uddhav Thackeray and described the reports of another split as false propaganda. Raut questioned Krupal Tumane’s relevance, asking, “Who is Kripal Tumane?” and calling him not a major name in Maharashtra politics.

Raut pointed out that all MPs had attended Uddhav’s meeting four days ago and expressed full confidence in his leadership. Some even swore on their family members to stay with Thackeray, he added. However, media reports suggested that only four MPs attended the meeting in person, one joined virtually, and four were absent, raising questions about the actual strength of the group.

This development comes nearly four years after the original split that changed Maharashtra politics. On June 20, 2022, 40 of Shiv Sena’s 55 MLAs sided with Eknath Shinde while Uddhav Thackeray was Chief Minister. After a dramatic few days involving a Supreme Court approach and a floor test, Thackeray resigned. Shinde took oath as Chief Minister with BJP support on June 30, 2022.

The battle for the party’s identity continued in courts and the Election Commission. In January 2024, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar recognised the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena, citing majority support. The Election Commission later awarded the traditional bow-and-arrow symbol to Shinde’s group, forcing Uddhav’s faction to contest as Shiv Sena (UBT).

The current claims of seven MPs crossing over, if true, could further weaken Uddhav Thackeray’s position in national politics, where numbers matter in Parliament. The Shinde faction, already in power in the state with BJP, sees this as another opportunity to consolidate its hold over the original Shiv Sena legacy.

For now, both sides are digging in. The Shinde camp is projecting confidence, while the UBT side is playing down the reports and stressing unity. Political observers in Mumbai say such claims often surface ahead of important sessions to create pressure and test loyalties.

The coming days will be crucial. If even a couple of MPs do switch, it could trigger more movement. Maharashtra’s politics has rarely been stable since 2022, with multiple smaller shifts and realignments keeping the state in constant churn.

Uddhav Thackeray’s “they are free to leave” remark is being seen by some as a sign of quiet confidence and by others as acceptance of ground realities. The party that once dominated Mumbai and much of Maharashtra remains divided, with both factions claiming to be the true inheritors of Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideology.

As the Monsoon Session approaches, all eyes are on the seven names doing the rounds. Whether Tumane’s claims materialise or remain political posturing will soon become clear. For now, the speculation itself has added fresh heat to an already volatile political summer in the state.

Frustrated by a massive jam in Worli caused by a political rally, a woman commuter lashed out at Minister Girish Mahajan, sparking a major political row.

A routine commute turned into a public showdown in Mumbai’s Worli on Tuesday after a woman, stranded for hours in a massive traffic snarl, directly confronted Maharashtra Minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan. The gridlock was a fallout of a protest march organized by the Mahayuti alliance, which brought several parts of South Mumbai to a virtual standstill.

The confrontation, which was captured on camera and widely shared across social platforms, has emerged as the latest news today highlighting the growing friction between political event management and public convenience. As the video gained traction, it triggered a wave of criticism from the opposition, who accused the ruling alliance of being detached from the struggles of the common citizen.

Commuters stranded in Worli

The protest, held on April 21, was intended as a show of strength by the Mahayuti alliance regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill. However, the logistical execution of the rally led to a total collapse of traffic movement in and around Worli by early afternoon.

Long queues of ambulances, school buses, and private vehicles were seen stuck as supporters occupied major arterial roads. It was during this peak chaos that an unidentified woman exited her vehicle and walked up to Girish Mahajan’s convoy to register her protest.

Viral face-off caught on camera

Witnesses stated that the woman appeared visibly distressed by the delay. In the viral footage, she is seen questioning the Minister about the necessity of blocking roads for a political demonstration, eventually telling the leaders to "leave" the spot to allow traffic to flow.

The Minister, surrounded by security and party workers, appeared caught off guard by the directness of the exchange. This incident has since become a trending news India topic, with many netizens hailing the woman’s "fearless" stand against the VIP culture often associated with such rallies.

Opposition slams 'Event Management'

The opposition was quick to capitalize on the public embarrassment faced by the BJP leader. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut took a swipe at the Mahayuti alliance on X (formerly Twitter), suggesting that public patience with such displays of power is wearing thin.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar also launched a scathing attack, noting that the "voice of an ordinary woman" proved more potent than the party’s slogans. He argued that the BJP’s reliance on large-scale events often comes at the cost of the daily lives of Mumbaikars, describing the rally as a "spectacle" rather than a sincere protest.

Calls for public accountability

Adding to the chorus of criticism, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar stated that holding citizens "hostage" in traffic for political mileage is unacceptable. He emphasized that such protests often ignore people dealing with medical emergencies or urgent work commitments.

"If people are made to remain stuck for hours just to please 'His Master’s Voice', there will certainly be a strong public reaction," Pawar remarked. He noted that while the cause of a protest might be valid, the method should not infringe upon the basic rights of movement of the general public.

Impact on ruling alliance

This public interest story has put the Mahayuti government on the defensive regarding the permission granted for such large-scale rallies on working days. Sources indicated that the police department is now facing questions over why alternate routes were not effectively managed before the march began.

Political analysts suggest that this incident might force a rethink on how political parties conduct shows of strength in congested urban hubs like Mumbai. The backlash serves as a reminder that digital-age voters are increasingly intolerant of administrative lapses caused by political activities.

Future of urban protests

As the video continues to circulate as a major India news update, the state government is expected to issue a statement regarding traffic management protocols for future events. For now, the image of a lone woman standing up to a powerful minister has become a symbol of civic frustration in the city.

In a rapid political development, leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday, seeking a swift decision on filling the vacant Deputy Chief Minister’s post following the tragic death of Ajit Pawar . The meeting underscores the immediate push to manage the significant power vacuum left in state politics, even as a separate investigation into the fatal plane crash that claimed Pawar’s life was handed over to the state’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) .

The high-level NCP delegation, comprising senior figures like Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, and Chhagan Bhujbal, asserted the party’s claim to retain the crucial cabinet portfolios held by Ajit Pawar, which include Finance, State Excise, and Sports . Speaking to reporters, Patel emphasized the alliance’s need to fill the post promptly while being mindful of public sentiment and the family’s grief .

Key Developments at a Glance

Political Meeting: NCP leaders met CM Fadnavis to discuss succession and portfolio retention .

Succession Focus: Internal party discussions point to Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s widow, as a leading contender for the Deputy CM role .

Investigation Update: The probe into the January 28 Baramati plane crash has been transferred from Pune Rural Police to the Maharashtra CID .

Merger Talks Revived: Ajit Pawar’s death has reignited speculation about a merger between the two NCP factions, with aides confirming it was a priority for the late leader .

The Political Maneuvering: Succession and Portfolios

The Ajit Pawar succession question is dominating political circles. While the NCP’s legislative party is expected to meet within a day or two to formalize its choice, the name of Sunetra Pawar is widely expected to be proposed . A Rajya Sabha MP with a background in social work and business, her potential elevation is seen as a move to ensure continuity and stability within the party and the ruling Mahayuti alliance .

Praful Patel clarified that while Sunetra Pawar’s name was part of internal discussions, it was not explicitly discussed with CM Fadnavis. The final decision will follow consultations with all party legislators . The NCP is keen to quickly resolve the leadership question to maintain its influence, especially over the financially significant Finance portfolio .

CID Takes Charge of Plane Crash Probe

Separately, the Maharashtra police issued orders transferring the investigation into the fatal plane crash to the state CID . The Pune Rural Police had registered an accidental death case under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following the January 28 crash, which killed Ajit Pawar, two pilots, his personal security officer, and a flight attendant .

A senior official stated that the CID team has begun its work, which includes collecting documents from local police and visiting the crash site near the Baramati airstrip. A primary aim of the probe is to rule out any sabotage to the aircraft before its journey from Mumbai . The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has also initiated a separate investigation .

A Legacy and a Possible Merger

The sudden political shift has also revived talks of a long-anticipated unification of the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar with the one led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar . Close aides have revealed that Ajit Pawar was actively planning a merger and had reached an advanced stage in talks before his death, viewing it as a necessary step for the party’s future .

This potential NCP merger could dramatically alter Maharashtra’s political calculus, creating a larger, consolidated bloc with significant numbers in both the state assembly and the Lok Sabha .

What Lies Ahead

The coming days are critical for Maharashtra’s political landscape. The NCP’s legislative party meeting will likely set the official course for succession, after which a formal recommendation will be made to Chief Minister Fadnavis . The alliance’s acceptance of the candidate, especially if it is Sunetra Pawar, will be a key test of stability.

Concurrently, the CID’s findings from its crash investigation will be closely watched for any new details surrounding the tragedy that precipitated this period of political transition. As the state mourns, its political gears are turning rapidly to address the new reality shaped by Ajit Pawar’s absence.

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across Maharashtra and national politics, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was killed in a plane crash near Baramati on Wednesday morning. The crash also claimed the lives of four others, including two crew members and Pawar’s staff. The aircraft, a Learjet 45, was traveling from Mumbai to Baramati when it crashed during landing, erupting into flames shortly after impact.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning, expressing his condolences on social media. He described Pawar as a “grassroots leader” with a deep connection to the people and a passion for empowering the poor. The sudden loss has not only left a void in Maharashtra’s political landscape but also raised urgent questions about aviation safety and coalition stability.

Investigation Underway: What Caused the Crash?

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal investigation into the Baramati plane crash. Early reports suggest the aircraft veered off the runway during landing, crashing into the grassy side area known as the “soldier” zone. Despite clear weather conditions at the time, the plane burst into flames immediately upon impact, leaving no survivors.

Officials are examining multiple factors, including:

· Possible mechanical or technical failure

· Flight data and voice recordings from the black box

· Pilot communication and landing procedures

· Maintenance history of the Learjet 45 aircraft

While speculation points to a critical phase failure during landing—a common cause in aviation accidents—the DGCA has urged patience, noting that a detailed report may take weeks or months.

Political Ramifications: A Major Blow to NCP and Maharashtra Government

Ajit Pawar was not only a seasoned administrator but also a key figure in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). His influence extended across Maharashtra, particularly in the Baramati region, a Pawar family stronghold. The crash comes at a politically sensitive time, with local elections underway in parts of the state.

Pawar’s death creates an immediate vacuum in the state’s ruling Mahayuti coalition, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP. As Deputy Chief Minister, he handled critical portfolios like finance and planning, and his absence may challenge the stability of the government.

The NCP, already fractured after a split between Ajit Pawar and his uncle Sharad Pawar last year, now faces an uncertain future. The party’s symbol and legacy remain contentious, and Pawar’s death could trigger a fresh struggle for leadership within its ranks.

A Legacy Cut Short: Who Was Ajit Pawar?

Born in 1959, Ajit Pawar was one of Maharashtra’s most experienced politicians. He served as Deputy Chief Minister across multiple terms and was known for his sharp administrative acumen, particularly in state finance. He presented Maharashtra’s budget multiple times and was considered a master strategist in coalition politics.

Beyond politics, Pawar was widely recognized for his development work in rural Maharashtra, especially in water management and agricultural projects. His close ties with grassroots workers made him a formidable force in state politics for decades.

Questions Linger: Safety, Succession, and Stability

As rescue teams recover the remains and investigators piece together the wreckage, larger questions loom. Aviation safety in India’s regional travel network is back under scrutiny, especially involving private charters like the one involved in this crash.

Politically, all eyes are on the Mahayuti coalition. While Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis have assured continuity, the loss of a leader of Pawar’s stature is undeniable. The coming days will likely see hurried negotiations, portfolio reshuffles, and behind-the-scenes maneuvering to fill the gap.

For now, Maharashtra mourns. Condolences have poured in from across party lines, reflecting Pawar’s widespread respect. But as the smoke clears, the hard questions—about safety, succession, and stability—will demand answers.

Opinion: The Ajit Pawar Tragedy – A Political Shockwave That Will Reshape Maharashtra

The untimely death of Ajit Pawar is more than a personal tragedy—it is a political earthquake whose aftershocks will be felt across Maharashtra for years to come. In one fiery moment, the state lost not just a deputy chief minister, but a master negotiator, a seasoned administrator, and the de facto guardian of the NCP’s dwindling unity.

Pawar’s career was a lesson in realpolitik. He could switch allies, navigate coalitions, and hold budgets together with a cool, calculative demeanor. In a state where politics is often driven by emotion, he was a strategist. That is why his absence creates a vacuum no one in the ruling coalition can easily fill.

The Mahayuti government, already a patchwork of conflicting interests, has lost its key balancing force. Pawar was the bridge between the BJP’s centralizing impulses and the regional aspirations of his NCP faction. Without him, the coalition may drift into instability, especially with local elections ongoing and a fractured opposition looking for openings.

Then there is the NCP itself. Last year’s split between uncle Sharad and nephew Ajit was dramatic, but it was Ajit who walked away with the party symbol and a sizable cadre. His death leaves his faction leaderless and could prompt a return to the Sharad Pawar camp—or trigger a new splintering. Either way, the NCP as we knew it may be gone for good.

But beyond the political calculus, there is a human story here. A leader who, for all his shrewdness, remained deeply connected to his Baramati roots. A man who believed in development, not just rhetoric. That legacy deserves recognition, even from his critics.

In the end, this crash is a grim reminder of how fragile power really is. One moment, you are a deputy chief minister en route to an election meeting; the next, you are a headline. As Maharashtra picks up the pieces, it must also ask: in the rush for power, are we forgetting the values of service? Ajit Pawar, for all his contradictions, never did.
