President Droupadi Murmu to Visit Jagdalpur on February 7, Attend Bastar Pandum

President Droupadi Murmu will visit Jagdalpur on February 7 to inaugurate the divisional-level Bastar Pandum at the Lalbagh Ground, marking a significant moment for the tribal-dominated Bastar region. The visit will make Murmu the fifth President of India to set foot in Bastar. The last presidential visit to the region took place eight years ago, when then President Ram Nath Kovind toured Dantewada in July 2018.

The high-profile visit has triggered extensive administrative and security preparations across Jagdalpur. District authorities are overseeing arrangements related to security deployment, traffic regulation, seating plans, and essential amenities at the venue. Senior administrative and police officials from across the Bastar division are conducting continuous on-site reviews to ensure smooth execution of the programme.

According to officials, separate teams have been assigned to manage the stage setup, barricading, media enclosure, parking facilities, and VVIP movement. Security agencies have heightened surveillance in and around the Lalbagh Ground, with multiple layers of security being put in place in view of the President’s presence.

The Bastar Pandum, a cultural celebration showcasing the region’s tribal heritage, is considered a flagship event aimed at promoting indigenous traditions, art forms, and community participation. President Murmu’s participation is expected to lend national visibility to the event and reinforce the Centre’s focus on tribal culture and development.

Officials said the President’s visit holds particular importance for Bastar due to its predominantly tribal population and its unique socio-cultural identity. Presidential visits to the region have historically been viewed as milestones, drawing national attention to Bastar’s development challenges as well as its cultural richness.

Bastar has hosted a limited number of presidential visits since Independence. India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, visited the region on March 23, 1953. He was followed by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on June 4, 2004, and Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on September 29, 2008. Ram Nath Kovind’s 2018 visit was the most recent prior to Murmu’s proposed tour.

The district administration has advised residents to follow traffic advisories and security guidelines during the visit. Final schedules and movement plans are expected to be issued closer to the event, subject to security clearance.

Authorities said all preparations are on track to ensure the programme is conducted in a safe, orderly, and dignified manner, reflecting the significance of the President’s visit to Bastar.
