JPC on “One Nation, One Election” Visits Gujarat for Nationwide Consultation Drive

Panel Led by 39 MPs, Including Priyanka Gandhi and Sambit Patra, to Meet Political Leaders and State Officials

A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) constituted to examine the proposal of “One Nation, One Election” has begun a multi-state consultation process, with its latest visit scheduled in Gujarat. The 39-member committee, which includes leaders from various political parties such as Priyanka Gandhi, Sambit Patra and Bansuri Swaraj, will spend three days interacting with political stakeholders and government officials in the state.

The committee’s visit marks an important phase in the ongoing national discussion around simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. On Tuesday, members of the JPC are expected to meet Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel along with senior state officials to gather feedback on the proposed electoral reform. The panel is also set to hold its first press briefing in Gujarat at GIFT City in Gandhinagar at 5:30 PM, where members are likely to outline the objectives of the consultation process and the roadmap ahead.

According to the schedule, the committee has also invited all political parties to present their views on the issue during a dedicated consultation session in Gandhinagar on 20 May 2026. The JPC aims to compile inputs from political parties, administrative bodies, and experts before preparing its final recommendations for Parliament. The committee is chaired by senior advocate and MP P. P. Chaudhary and comprises 27 Lok Sabha MPs and 12 Rajya Sabha MPs representing a wide political spectrum. The ongoing consultations are part of a structured effort to evaluate the feasibility, challenges, and benefits of conducting simultaneous elections across the country.

Political reactions in Gujarat have reflected the broader national divide on the issue. The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly supported the idea, arguing that simultaneous elections would improve governance efficiency, reduce administrative burden, and cut election-related expenditure. BJP spokesperson Anil Patel stated that the party fully backs the concept of One Nation, One Election.

On the other hand, the Congress party has maintained that it will present its concerns before the committee. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that the issue is closely linked to democratic rights and federal structure, and therefore requires careful scrutiny and wide consultation before any implementation. The idea of simultaneous elections is not new in India. In the early years after independence, elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies were held together in 1952, 1957, 1962, and 1967. However, this cycle was disrupted due to premature dissolution of several state assemblies and later the Lok Sabha, leading to the current staggered electoral system.

In recent years, the proposal has gained renewed attention, especially after the formation of a high-level committee under former President Ram Nath Kovind in September 2023. That committee conducted extensive consultations and submitted its report after nearly 191 days of research, recommending structural reforms for implementing simultaneous elections. Supporters of the proposal argue that it could bring several benefits. These include improved governance continuity, reduced disruption caused by the Model Code of Conduct, lower administrative burden on security forces and officials, and significant cost savings for both the government and political parties.

Data cited in support of the proposal suggests that India experienced the Model Code of Conduct for approximately 676 days between 2019 and 2024, averaging nearly 113 days per year. Additionally, the 2024 general elections alone reportedly involved massive expenditures running into substantial public and private costs. However, critics of the proposal have raised concerns regarding its impact on federalism, logistical complexity, and the constitutional changes required to implement such a system. They argue that synchronising elections across a diverse and large democracy like India would require significant restructuring and consensus among all political stakeholders.

The Gujarat visit is part of a broader outreach programme, with earlier consultations conducted in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand. In Maharashtra, the committee interacted with state leadership, administrative officials, public sector representatives, and regulatory bodies to assess the administrative impact of simultaneous elections. In Uttarakhand, discussions focused on governance interruptions due to frequent elections and the potential for cost savings in hilly regions.

The committee is expected to compile all inputs and present its final report during the last week of the 2026 Monsoon Session of Parliament. While the exact date of submission has not been officially announced, the findings will play a crucial role in shaping future parliamentary debate on the issue. As the JPC continues its nationwide consultations, the debate over “One Nation, One Election” remains one of the most significant electoral reform discussions in India, with strong arguments on both sides regarding efficiency, democracy, and federal balance.

CM Mohan Yadav briefs newly appointed corporation and board chairpersons in Bhopal on administrative boundaries and financial management.

In a significant move aimed at streamlining governance and curbing recent controversies, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav on Monday inaugurated a specialized orientation program for the newly appointed non-official chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of various state corporations, boards, and commissions.

The training session, which commenced at 9:00 AM at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Good Governance and Policy Analysis (AIGGPA) in Bhopal, saw the participation of 63 newly appointed leaders who hold minister-equivalent status. The five-hour intensive program concluded around 2:00 PM, focusing heavily on administrative protocols and the limits of executive power.

Focus on administrative boundaries

The core objective of the session was to define the operational boundaries between the newly appointed political executives, departmental ministers, and senior bureaucrats. Senior officials from the General Administration Department (GAD) and the Finance Department led the initial presentations.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the top leadership wanted to address potential friction points early on. "There have been historical instances of turf wars between corporation heads and departmental secretaries over financial approvals and routine decision-making," an official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated. The session explicitly outlined the legal and administrative framework under which these boards operate to prevent future conflicts.

Curbing VIP culture display

The training comes on the heels of a sharp reprimand from the BJP central leadership in New Delhi regarding ostentatious displays of power. Recent joining ceremonies by several newly appointed board chiefs involved massive vehicular rallies, leading to significant public inconvenience and traffic gridlock across various districts.

BJP leadership signals tough stance

The political fallout of these rallies has already resulted in strict disciplinary action within the state unit. The party recently removed Sajjan Singh Thakur from his post as Bhind Kisan Morcha district president. More prominently, Soubhagya Singh Thakur, the newly appointed head of the Textbook Corporation, was served a formal notice, and his executive powers were temporarily frozen following a massive highway cavalcade near Dewas.

Local authorities confirmed that the morning sessions at AIGGPA included specific briefs on maintaining public decorum and adhering to austerity measures, especially in light of central directives concerning the judicial use of resources.

Senior bureaucracy monitors sessions

The scale of the orientation was reflected in the presence of top-tier bureaucracy. On the directives of the GAD, Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and Secretaries representing 18 different state departments remained present throughout the venue.

The officers delivered detailed presentations covering:

Fiscal management rules and budgetary allocations

The process of policy formulation and implementation

Statutory responsibilities and limitations of autonomous boards

Procedures for navigating government files and official sanctions

Future roadmap for boards

As the briefing wrapped up in the afternoon, the focus shifted toward accountability and deliverable targets for each corporation. With the training session for corporation heads concluded, the state administration expects a smoother, less disruptive transition of these political appointees into their respective roles.

The government plans to monitor the initial performance and coordination of these boards over the next quarter to ensure that the friction between political appointees and bureaucratic machinery is kept to a minimum.

‘Compromised PM no longer capable’: Rahul says ‘don’t buy gold’ advice is proof of Modi govt’s failure

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp counterattack on Monday against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent “seven appeals” to the public, arguing that asking citizens to cut back on gold, travel, and cooking oil was not sound advice but an admission of the government’s own economic mismanagement.

In a post on X, Gandhi said the Prime Minister appeared “compromised” and no longer capable of running the country.

“Yesterday, Modi ji asked the public to make sacrifices—don’t buy gold, don’t travel abroad, use less petrol, reduce consumption of fertilisers and cooking oil, take the metro, work from home. These are not suggestions. These are failures,” Gandhi wrote.

He added that after 12 years in power, the government had reached a point where the Prime Minister had to tell people what to buy, what not to buy, where to go, and where not to go.

PM’s Secunderabad pitch

The exchange began on Sunday. Speaking at a rally in Secunderabad, PM Modi had stressed the need to reduce dependence on imports to save foreign exchange. He listed seven specific asks: reduce petrol and diesel use, promote work-from-home models, cut down on edible oil consumption, halve chemical fertiliser use, postpone non-essential foreign travel, and avoid buying or donating gold for one year.

Officials said the appeals were prompted by rising global prices due to conflicts in West Asia. India, which does not have large domestic oil reserves, remains vulnerable.

Opposition piles on

But opposition parties quickly rejected the narrative. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed the economic situation was far more serious than official figures suggested. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP had failed on both the economy and foreign policy.

“As soon as elections ended, the government suddenly remembered a ‘crisis’. In reality, there is only one crisis for the country, and its name is BJP,” Yadav said.

Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale questioned why ordinary citizens were being asked to make sacrifices while ministers continued using Air Force aircraft and large convoys. He also asked why the announcements came only after several state elections had concluded.

The numbers behind the appeal

Government data and industry reports show why foreign exchange outflows have become a concern.

Annual gold expenditure has crossed ₹6 lakh crore, up from ₹4.89 lakh crore in 2024–25. The World Gold Council noted that in the first quarter of 2026, investment demand for gold in India surpassed jewellery demand for the first time.

Indians spent ₹3.65 lakh crore on foreign travel in 2025–26, a sharp rise from ₹2.72 lakh crore in 2023–24.

Fertiliser imports touched ₹1.50 lakh crore this year, a 76 per cent jump. A significant portion comes from Qatar, making supplies vulnerable to regional instability. Prices have remained elevated as a result.

Crude oil, however, remains the biggest drain. India imports nearly 70 per cent of its requirements. While the oil import bill declined to ₹10.35 lakh crore in 2025–26 from ₹11.66 lakh crore the previous year, crude prices have surged nearly 50 per cent in the past two months. Sources familiar with the matter said the bill could climb to ₹17 lakh crore if the conflict widens.

What happens now

For now, the political battle lines are clear. The government argues it is preparing the public for hard choices in the national interest. The opposition sees an administration struggling to shield the economy from global shocks.

Rahul Gandhi ended his post with a pointed remark: “A compromised PM cannot fix this. A failed govt cannot ask for more sacrifices.” The Prime Minister’s Office has not issued a direct response.

In his first Cabinet meeting at Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the implementation of several central schemes and a crackdown on illegal border activities.

Kolkata: Marking a tectonic shift in West Bengal’s administrative direction, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday chaired his first cabinet meeting at Nabanna, clearing six major policy decisions that align the state closely with the Centre. Highlighting national security and public welfare as immediate priorities, the Chief Minister announced that all pending land requirements for the Border Security Force (BSF) would be cleared within 45 days.

The meeting, which took place just two days after the BJP government was sworn in following a landslide victory, also saw the official entry of West Bengal into the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme—a long-standing point of contention between the previous TMC regime and the Union government.

Focus on border security and land transfer

The decision to expedite land handover to the BSF is being seen as the new administration's first major move to curb illegal infiltration. Addressing the media after the session, Adhikari alleged that the previous government had deliberately stalled border fencing projects.

“National security cannot be a matter of political negotiation. We have directed the Land and Land Reforms Department to ensure that 100% of the required land for fencing along the international border is handed over to the BSF within 45 days,” the Chief Minister said. Sources in the state secretariat indicated that nearly 90% of the land identification process is already in its final stages.

Rollout of Ayushman Bharat and central schemes

In a move that will impact millions of families, the cabinet gave its nod to implement the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, popularly known as Ayushman Bharat, in West Bengal. The Health Secretary has been instructed to sign the necessary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Health Ministry immediately.

Beyond healthcare, the state will now also adopt other flagship central programmes including PM Vishwakarma, PM SHRI, and the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. The Chief Minister emphasized that these schemes would complement existing state-run social programs, which he assured would not be stopped but made more transparent through updated DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) portals.

Relief for government job aspirants

Addressing a key poll promise that resonated with the state’s youth, the cabinet approved a five-year relaxation in the upper age limit for government job applicants. This move is intended to compensate for the "lost years" of recruitment cycles that were allegedly frozen or marred by litigation in the past decade.

“We are committed to the youth of Bengal. This relaxation will ensure that those who missed out on opportunities due to administrative delays get a fair shot at serving the state,” Adhikari added.

Administrative and legal overhaul

The cabinet also signaled a shift in how the state’s bureaucracy and police interact with the Centre. West Bengal cadre IAS and IPS officers will now be permitted to attend central government training programs, a practice that had seen significant friction previously.

On the legal front, the government announced the full implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Chief Minister noted that criminal and anti-social activities would be dealt with strictly under the new central laws, adding that the state would also immediately begin the 2025 Census process as per the Ministry of Home Affairs circular.

Tribute to political martyrs

The meeting began with a formal tribute to 321 individuals described by the government as "martyrs" of political violence in Bengal. Adhikari stated that the families of these workers would receive the state's full support.

“This government is born out of the sacrifice of our workers. We will ensure justice reaches every corner of Bengal where lawlessness once prevailed,” he said.

Crackdown on syndicates and smuggling

Earlier in the day, Nabanna issued high-level instructions to district Superintendents of Police to initiate an immediate crackdown on cattle smuggling and "syndicate raj" (unauthorised construction and supply cartels).

A separate law-and-order review meeting was held at 5 pm, where senior officials including the Director General of Police and the Kolkata Police Commissioner were briefed on the new government's policing priorities.

Future roadmap for the Cabinet

The next cabinet meeting is scheduled for next Monday, where the government is expected to discuss the formation of a fact-finding committee regarding the RG Kar case and other issues concerning women's safety. Senior leaders like Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul, who were present at today's meeting along with other newly inducted ministers, are expected to play a central role in these upcoming deliberations.

As the Adhikari administration moves towards a "paperless office" system and a complete administrative overhaul, the first day’s decisions have set a clear, aggressive tone for the BJP’s debut innings in West Bengal.

Thousands gather at Brigade Parade Ground for historic swearing-in ceremony; 20 NDA chief ministers to attend

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at the RCTC Ground in Kolkata just before 10 am on Saturday, marking the start of a high-stakes day that will see Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as West Bengal's first BJP chief minister. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 11 am at the historic Brigade Parade Ground.

Adhikari, dressed in a saffron kurta for the occasion, arrived at the airport to receive the Prime Minister. The gesture carried political weight, signalling the close coordination between the BJP's central leadership and its newest state government.

Historic Transition of Power

The legislative party meeting held Friday at a Convention Centre in Kolkata formally elected Adhikari as their leader. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision shortly after. Adhikari then met the Governor at Lok Bhavan to stake claim for forming the government.

For the BJP, this represents a breakthrough in a state it had never governed before. The party's performance in last month's assembly elections reshaped West Bengal's political map.

Massive Gathering Expected

Authorities expect over one lakh people to assemble at the Brigade Parade Ground. Four thousand security personnel have been deployed across the venue. Barricades are being installed to manage the crowd, and waterproof tents have been set up as a precaution against unpredictable late-morning weather.

The pandal features a Bengal theme with approximately 20 varieties of flowers used for decoration. A large floral rangoli has been arranged before the main stage. The vehicle meant to carry Adhikari and PM Modi to the podium has also been specially decorated.

NDA Leaders Flock to Kolkata

Chief ministers from 20 NDA and BJP-ruled states have arrived to attend the ceremony. Among those confirmed present are Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary, and Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and BJP president JP Nadda have also reached the venue. Gadkari landed earlier this morning, while Nadda left his hotel shortly before 9.30 am.

Ground-Level Preparations

Beyond the political spectacle, organisers have arranged stalls selling local favourites like jhalmuri and rasgulla. The VIP lunch menu includes aloo dum, black lentils, pulao, mixed vegetables, masala kulcha, baingan bhaja saag, aloo poshto, and gulab jamun for dessert.

A memorial has been erected at the ground for BJP workers killed in political violence in West Bengal over recent years. Party leaders have framed the swearing-in as a tribute to those deaths.

What Comes Next

BJP's Dilip Jaiswal told reporters earlier that the new government would work to fulfil the vision of a "new Bengal". Party leader Sankar Ghosh described the moment as time to meet the aspirations of the state's people.

Adhikari himself called the BJP's Bengal victory a "historic dawn" in a statement released Friday evening. Once sworn in, his immediate challenges will include cabinet formation and administrative transition in a state where the BJP previously had no governing experience.

The ceremony is expected to conclude by early afternoon.

BJP Wins West Bengal: Saffron Party Secures 207 Seats in 2026

BJP shatters Bengal glass ceiling with 207 seats; TMC ousted after 15-year rule

In a seismic shift that alters the landscape of Indian politics, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form its first-ever government in West Bengal. Crossing the "final frontier" that had eluded the saffron party for decades, the BJP secured a thumping majority with 207 seats in the 293-member Assembly, effectively ending the 15-year tenure of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The TMC, which had dominated the state since 2011, saw its tally plummet to 80 seats as the "Saffron Wave" swept through both rural heartlands and urban centres. Election Commission (EC) data confirmed a historic voter turnout of 92.47%, reflecting the high stakes of a campaign that often blurred the lines between a state election and a national referendum.

A historic shift in Kolkata

The atmosphere at the BJP state headquarters in Kolkata turned electric on Monday afternoon as early leads solidified into an unassailable majority. Supporters were seen celebrating with ‘Jhalmuri’ and saffron gulal, marking a symbolic victory in the birthplace of the party's ideological patriarch, Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

For the BJP, this isn't just a state win; it is the culmination of a decade-long expansion strategy. "The people of Bengal have chosen the path of 'Asol Poribortan' (real change)," a senior party strategist noted, requesting anonymity. Initial reports from counting centres indicate that the BJP made significant inroads into traditional TMC bastions, particularly in North Bengal and the tribal belts of Jangal Mahal.

Women voters swing the tide

One of the most defining factors of this mandate appears to be the consolidation of the female electorate. Despite the TMC’s long-standing welfare schemes targeted at women, the BJP managed to pivot the narrative toward safety and central representation. Party insiders suggest that the push for women’s reservation in legislatures created a "silent wave" of support.

Internal BJP data indicates a nearly 5% shift in the women's vote share. With 3.33 crore women voters in the state, this demographic essentially functioned as the party’s "Vikas Mitras," looking beyond local doles toward broader security concerns and national integration.

The Adhikari impact in Bhabanipur

The political humiliation for the TMC was compounded by the performance of Suvendu Adhikari. The former TMC heavyweight, who once served as Mamata Banerjee’s lieutenant, proved to be her most formidable challenger. His victory in the high-profile Bhabanipur and Nandigram seats served as the focal point of the BJP’s aggressive ground campaign.

Adhikari’s ability to pull away organizational cadres from the TMC disrupted the ruling party's booth-level management. His "insider vs. outsider" counter-narrative successfully neutralized the TMC’s attempt to brand the BJP as a party foreign to Bengali culture.

Middle-class angst and job security

The BJP also successfully tapped into the simmering discontent among government employees and the youth. Promises to implement the Seventh Pay Commission within 45 days of forming the government resonated deeply with nearly 50 lakh voters connected to the state and central services.

"There was a sense of being left behind compared to other states," said Arpan Das, a job aspirant at a local counting booth. The BJP’s "Poribortan Yatra," led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had specifically promised to fill vacant government posts, a move that targeted the 20-30 age demographic which felt sidelined by the existing recruitment processes.

Security measures ensure "fearless" voting

Ground-level cues suggest that the massive deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) played a psychological role in the high turnout. With 500 companies of CAPF stationed across the state and another 200 guarding EVM strongrooms, voters in traditionally "sensitive" zones reportedly felt more secure heading to the booths.

The BJP campaign heavily leveraged public outrage over law-and-order incidents, including the RG Kar hospital tragedy. By framing these issues as a failure of the state machinery, the party turned the election into a mandate on public safety. The RSS's grassroots mobilization further ensured that the "fear factor," often associated with Bengal polls, was significantly diminished.

From Rajasthan 1990 to Bengal 2026

The victory in West Bengal marks a full circle for the BJP’s journey as a governing force. The party first tasted state power in Rajasthan in 1990 under Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. From that humble 85-seat win to becoming the world's largest political party with 11 crore members, the expansion into Bengal represents the final piece of the BJP’s pan-India puzzle.

As the EC prepares to hand over the final certificates, the focus now shifts to the leadership choice for the Chief Minister’s post. While several names are doing the rounds, the party is expected to move quickly to ensure a smooth transition of power in Kolkata.

A fresh claim has surfaced in the killing of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath, with initial investigation pointing to a “planned hit” carried out by hired shooters on Wednesday night. Police have since recovered a second motorcycle believed to have been used in the attack.

The 42-year-old was shot multiple times around 10:30 pm while returning home from Kolkata to Madhyamgram. Three suspects have been detained for questioning, though no formal arrests have been made yet.

Second Bike Recovered Near Rail Gate

The additional motorcycle was found late Thursday night near the No. 11 rail gate area in Barasat. According to officials familiar with the investigation, the bike had reportedly been stolen earlier from the Dumdum neighbourhood. Multiple police teams are now working to trace the sequence of movement before and after the shooting.

A Pattern of Loss for the BJP Leader

This is not the first time Suvendu Adhikari has lost someone from his inner circle. Over the past 13 years, three close aides have died under circumstances that have raised questions.

In 2013, when Suvendu was still with the Trinamool Congress, his private assistant Pradeep Jha passed away. Investigators then termed it a natural death. Five years later, in 2018, his personal security officer Subhrata Chakraborty was found dead in what police ruled a suicide. Then in 2021, another personal assistant, Pulak Lahiri, also died in unusual circumstances.

MLA Was on Call When Shots Were Fired

A striking detail has emerged from the night of the murder. BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh has claimed that he was speaking to Chandranath on the phone when the attack happened.

“We were discussing the upcoming swearing-in ceremony. Suddenly, I heard gunshots over the phone, followed by someone groaning in pain. The call got disconnected,” Ghosh told reporters. He said he tried calling back repeatedly but there was no response. When someone finally answered, an unknown person informed him that Chandranath had been shot dead.

A 90-Minute Timeline of the Attack

Around 9 pm, Chandranath left Kolkata in a Scorpio SUV, seated beside the driver. At approximately 9:58 pm, CCTV cameras in Madhyamgram captured the vehicle passing through. Shortly after, another car and two motorcycles carrying three individuals were seen following it.

By 10:30 pm, near Doharia Junction, the car overtook the Scorpio and stopped in front of it, forcing the driver to halt. Before anyone could react, bike-borne attackers approached from the left and fired between six to ten rounds. Two bullets hit Chandranath in the chest, one in the abdomen.

The assailants then abandoned the car at the spot and fled on motorcycles using two separate routes. Police later found the car’s registration number was fake, and the chassis number had been tampered with.

Glock 47X Pistol Used in Killing

Officials have confirmed that the attackers used a Glock 47X pistol, a modern weapon not typically seen in ordinary criminal cases. “The manner of the attack suggests it was executed by professional shooters,” a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

From Air Force to Politics

Chandranath was not a career politician from the start. He served as an Air Force officer before taking voluntary retirement, then worked in the corporate sector for some time. He had been associated with Suvendu Adhikari since his Trinamool Congress days and was considered one of his most trusted aides. He officially joined Suvendu’s team in 2019 and later handled his election campaign in Bhabanipur — the same seat where Suvendu defeated Mamata Banerjee by around 15,000 votes.

Those who knew him describe Chandranath as calm and low-profile, someone who stayed away from the limelight despite years of close association with a high-profile leader.

Investigations remain ongoing. Police have not ruled out political motives.

NSUI gears up for CM House protest as student union elections emerge as political flashpoint in Chhattisgarh

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) is set to lay siege to the Chief Minister’s residence here this afternoon at 4 PM, pressing for the immediate restoration of student union elections in universities and colleges across Chhattisgarh. The protest comes amid growing demands from student outfits to revive a democratic process that has remained suspended for years.

Senior leaders from both Congress and BJP camps have voiced support for holding the polls, even as they traded charges over the prolonged delay.

Cross-party consensus with political barbs

Conversations with established politicians and young faces in Raipur’s political scene reveal broad agreement on the need for student elections, though accompanied by sharp finger-pointing.

Congress veteran and former Raipur mayor Pramod Dubey described student union polls as the “primary school of leadership.” He emphasised that campus elections nurture administrative skills, organisational abilities, and democratic values among the youth. Many prominent state and national leaders, he noted, began their journey through student politics.

Dubey acknowledged that preparations were underway during the previous Congress regime under Bhupesh Baghel but were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The situation did not permit it then,” he said.

BJP leaders push for regular polls

BJP leader and active municipal figure Mrityunjay Dubey strongly backed the conduct of elections as a healthy democratic tradition. He highlighted that elected student representatives are best placed to take up issues related to admissions, examinations, results, and academic facilities with the administration.

“When an 18-year-old can vote to elect panch, sarpanch, councillor, MLA, MP, CM, and even the Prime Minister, why should he or she be denied the right to choose representatives in their own college?” Dubey asked.

He, however, questioned the timing of NSUI’s aggressive push, asking why the issue was not pursued seriously during Congress rule.Youth leaders spar over intent and timing,

Prakhar Mishra, former president of Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University (PTRSU) student union and ex-state minister of BJYM, affirmed his organisation’s consistent support for student polls. He argued that such elections provide opportunities to youth from poor and middle-class families, improve the education environment, and produce grounded leadership.

Yet Mishra accused NSUI of political opportunism. “ABVP has traditionally dominated these elections and NSUI has not tasted much success. Now raising the demand looks like a political stunt,” he remarked.

NSUI’s Raipur district president Shantanu Jha countered by citing the pandemic. “From 2019 to 2022 the country was battling COVID. Health was the priority and elections were put on hold. As soon as normalcy returned, we began pushing for them,” he said.

Jha claimed that had Congress returned to power, the polls would have been conducted. He challenged other parties: “If it did not happen then, let it happen now. We extend our full support.”

Background of the demand

Student union elections in Chhattisgarh have been stalled since the Baghel government’s tenure, largely due to the pandemic and subsequent administrative delays. NSUI has intensified its campaign in recent weeks, submitting memorandums in over 250 colleges and staging protests at PTRSU and other campuses.

On Tuesday, NSUI workers led by PTRSU unit president Puneshwar Lahre submitted a memorandum to the registrar, proctor, and DSW of the university, warning of stronger agitation if demands are not met.

The issue resonates strongly with students who argue that elected bodies can better address day-to-day academic grievances compared to nominated representatives.

What lies ahead

With both major parties’ representatives endorsing the principle of student elections, the focus now shifts to the state government’s response to today’s gherao. Political observers say the protest could set the tone for how quickly the administration moves on the long-pending demand.

As evening approaches, NSUI activists are expected to gather in significant numbers, turning the spotlight once again on campus democracy in Chhattisgarh. Whether today’s demonstration yields concrete assurances or leads to further escalation remains to be seen.

Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead late Wednesday night on National Highway 12 near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district. Police said the attackers had been tracking his movements for at least a week before intercepting his vehicle and firing at close range.

The incident occurred around 11:30 pm when Rath was travelling in a Scorpio towards Siliguri. Near the Doharia area on Jessore Road, bike-borne assailants surrounded the vehicle and opened fire. The driver and two others were also injured.

Eight to fifteen rounds

Initial reports suggested four rounds were fired. But police later revised the count to 8-10 rounds. Hospital sources, however, told reporters that post-mortem examination suggested up to 15-16 bullet injuries. A three-member medical team led by Dr Kallol Ray has been constituted for the autopsy.

Rath sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and head. He was declared brought dead at a nearby hospital.

Movement tracked for a week

Police analysis of CCTV footage from key roads revealed the attackers had monitored Rath’s daily routine meticulously — the routes he took, the vehicle he used, and even the seat he occupied inside the car.

“The assailants knew exactly when and where to intercept him,” an official familiar with the probe said.

Kolkata Police have so far collected footage from eight CCTV cameras. State DGP Siddhinath Gupta is personally reviewing the visuals. A Special Investigation Team is being formed.

Political fallout

BJP workers staged a blockade on NH-12 overnight, demanding an encounter of the attackers. Party spokesperson Keya Ghosh appealed for calm but alleged that back-office BJP workers were being deliberately targeted. “The BJP envisions a government of change, not revenge,” she said.

BJP leader Rakesh Singh went further, demanding the arrest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party leader Abhishek Banerjee. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata later today.

TMC demands court-monitored CBI probe

In an unexpected move, the Trinamool Congress condemned the killing and demanded a CBI inquiry under court supervision. “We demand strict action. The killing of other BJP and TMC workers should also be investigated,” the party said in a statement.

Mother alleges political motive

Hasirani Rath, the victim’s mother, demanded life imprisonment for the killers. “I do not want them hanged, I want life imprisonment,” she said, alleging her son was targeted for political reasons linked to Adhikari’s electoral victory over Banerjee.

Separate shooting same night

About an hour after Rath’s killing, a BJP worker named Rohit Roy was shot and critically injured in Basirhat district. Over the last two days, at least five political workers — two from the BJP and three from the TMC — have reportedly been killed in the state.

A special session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly has been called for May 25.

Vinesh Phogat gets doping notice over missed test

The International Testing Agency has issued a notice to wrestler and Haryana MLA Vinesh Phogat for missing an out-of-competition doping test in Bengaluru on December 18, 2025, putting her on warning under the whereabouts rule. Phogat has been asked to respond by May 7, and officials said this was her first whereabouts violation in the past year.

According to the notice issued on May 4, the test was scheduled as part of routine anti-doping checks conducted outside competition hours. Such tests are meant to ensure athletes are available at the location they have declared in advance under the anti-doping whereabouts system.

The ITA’s communication says Phogat was not available when testers reached the designated place. For now, she has only received a warning, but a series of three missed tests or filing failures within a 12-month period can lead to a suspension of up to two years.

Phogat has said she was travelling from Bengaluru to Chandigarh on December 18 to attend the winter session of the Haryana Assembly. She also cited new family responsibilities and the recent birth of her child, saying she could not update her location in time because of a busy schedule.

She submitted her reply on January 19, 2026, according to the details available.

The whereabouts rule requires athletes in the testing pool to keep anti-doping agencies informed about where they will be, so they can be contacted for random testing. If an athlete is not found at the declared location, it is treated as a violation even if no banned substance is found.

For wrestlers and other elite athletes, out-of-competition testing is a regular part of the anti-doping framework and can happen at any time.

Phogat’s latest notice comes against the backdrop of a difficult two years in her wrestling career. She last competed at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where she wrestled three bouts in the 505050 kg category on August 6 before being disqualified ahead of the final after weighing 100100100 grams over the limit.

She announced her retirement from wrestling on August 8, 2024, but later reversed that decision on December 12, 2025, saying she wanted to target the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

The development also follows Phogat’s latest remarks against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. In a video posted on May 3, she said a Senior Open Ranking Wrestling Tournament is scheduled in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, from May 10 to 12, and expressed concern about competing in a place linked to the allegations she has made.

Phogat said her testimony in court is still underway and suggested it would be difficult for her to compete there with full focus. She added that if anything went wrong with any member of her team, the responsibility would lie with the Government of India.

The immediate focus now is on Phogat’s response to the ITA notice by May 7. While the first violation has brought only a warning, the matter could become more serious if additional whereabouts failures are recorded over the year. For now, the case sits at the intersection of sport, anti-doping compliance and Phogat’s active public and political profile.

Basically, as they marched through a crowded street, blasting music and shouting slogans, a Muslim funeral procession needed to pass. The organizers didn’t hesitate. They cut the music and cleared the way for the cortege. People nearby said the scene really highlighted Bengal’s centuries-old mix of cultures, what’s often called "Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb."

One local—who watched it happen—said, “Politics matters, but honoring the departed comes first.” Honestly, this gesture stood out, especially with all the tension swirling around after the heated state elections. Moments like this, showing basic respect and harmony, rarely make headlines when the political drama takes center stage. But they speak volumes about what actually happens on the ground.

In a WhatsApp message from May 6, Trump called the victory "historic" and "decisive," and he even said, "India is lucky to have you as leader."

The BJP’s win in West Bengal marks a big political shift—finally breaking Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress’s 15-year grip on the state. According to White House spokesman Kush Desai, Trump admires the clarity of Modi’s win.

This message isn’t just about politics; it’s part of a warm relationship between Trump and Modi. They've talked plenty about global security and trade, and now, Trump’s taking the extra step to comment on state elections, not just national ones. It shows how much attention India’s changing political scene is grabbing around the world.
