Congress leader alleges project benefits private interests; Centre defends it as strategic infrastructure initiative

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of the proposed Great Nicobar Island development project, alleging that the government is misrepresenting it as a national security initiative while it actually serves private commercial interests. In a 16-minute video shared on social media platform X, he claimed the project could lead to large-scale ecological damage and questioned its transparency and intent.

The remarks come amid ongoing political debate over one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure proposals, estimated at around ₹90,000 crore. The Centre, however, maintains that the project is aimed at strengthening India’s strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific region and boosting maritime trade through a major transshipment hub.

Video claims and allegations

In his video message, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government has framed the Great Nicobar Island Project as a defence-linked initiative, while its actual purpose is to enable commercial development in a sensitive ecological zone. He also urged citizens to oppose the project and sign a public petition.

He further claimed that the project could impact forests, coral reefs, and indigenous tribal communities living on the island. According to him, the scale of proposed development raises serious environmental and social concerns that have not been adequately addressed.Environment and tribal concerns

The Congress leader said the project violates provisions of the Forest Rights Act and could threaten the livelihood and land rights of tribal communities in the region. He also alleged that large-scale tree felling and ecological disruption may occur if the plan is implemented in its current form.

He referred to his recent visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, stating that the region’s biodiversity, including coral reefs and dense forests, must be protected from large-scale construction activities.

Strategic importance of project

The Great Nicobar Island Project is planned as a multi-component infrastructure initiative, including an international transshipment port, airport, power plant, and a new township. The government argues that it will enhance India’s maritime capabilities and strengthen its position along key global shipping routes.

Officials have previously stated that the project is designed to improve trade connectivity, support defence infrastructure, and boost economic activity in the region. The Centre has rejected allegations that the initiative is driven by private interests.

Political debate intensifies

The issue has become a point of political confrontation, with opposition leaders questioning environmental clearances and project approvals. Rahul Gandhi has been one of the most vocal critics in recent weeks, raising concerns over transparency and consultation with local communities.

The government, on the other hand, continues to defend the project as a long-term strategic investment aligned with India’s national security and economic growth priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Assam Cabinet Expansion: 12 MLAs Inducted Into Sarma Ministry

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expanded his cabinet by inducting 12 MLAs as ministers, strengthening the BJP-led NDA government after its third consecutive electoral victory.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday expanded his council of ministers, with 12 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) taking oath as cabinet ministers. The expansion comes shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a third consecutive term in the state, reinforcing its political dominance in Assam.

The swearing-in ceremony was held in the presence of senior government leaders and party functionaries. Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly inducted ministers.

The cabinet expansion is being viewed as a significant political and administrative step aimed at strengthening governance, ensuring broader regional representation, and preparing the government for its new term.

New Faces in Ministry

Among the prominent new entrants are BJP legislators Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Nilima Devi and Sushanta Borgohain. Former Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary has also joined the council of ministers.

The expansion includes several experienced legislators who have held key organisational and administrative responsibilities in the past. Political observers believe the inclusion of both seasoned leaders and relatively new faces reflects the party's attempt to balance experience with fresh leadership.

Chief Minister Sarma announced the list of ministers a day before the oath-taking ceremony through a social media post, confirming the names of all 12 legislators selected for ministerial responsibilities.

NDA Ally Gets Representation

The expansion also accommodated leaders from alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Senior AGP leader Keshab Mahanta, who served as a minister in the previous NDA government, has been included in the new cabinet.

The move signals the BJP's continued effort to maintain coalition unity while ensuring adequate representation for its alliance partners within the government structure.

Other legislators inducted into the ministry include Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Jayant Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, Pijush Hazarika and Ranoj Pegu.

Strong Electoral Mandate

The cabinet expansion follows the NDA's emphatic performance in the Assam Assembly elections. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably retaining power and extending its political influence in the northeastern state.

The result marked the third consecutive electoral victory for the BJP-led alliance in Assam, underlining the party's strong organisational presence and voter support.

Following the election victory, Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister on May 12 at a ceremony held in Guwahati.

Several senior leaders, including Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog, had earlier taken oath as members of the new Council of Ministers.

Governance Priorities Ahead

Political analysts believe the expanded cabinet will help distribute administrative responsibilities more effectively across departments and regions. The new team is expected to focus on infrastructure development, employment generation, welfare initiatives and implementation of key government schemes.

The induction of additional ministers may also enhance coordination between departments as the government begins implementing its agenda for the new term.

With a strong legislative majority and an expanded council of ministers, the Himanta Biswa Sarma government enters its new tenure with significant political stability and administrative capacity.

The Congress leader's swearing-in marks the completion of a power-sharing agreement with Siddaramaiah, who has now been appointed to the party's highest decision-making body

DK Shivakumar will be sworn in as the 24th Chief Minister of Karnataka this evening. The ceremony is scheduled for 4 pm at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, bringing to a close weeks of speculation over the leadership transition in the state.

The Congress Legislature Party had elected Shivakumar as its leader on 30 May, two days after Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation. Shivakumar now takes over from Siddaramaiah, who served as Chief Minister from 20 May 2023.

Cabinet list awaited

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shivakumar said the Congress high command would release the list of ministers for the new cabinet either by 10 am or later in the afternoon today. He clarified that names circulating in various media outlets were not official.

The list will be finalised in Delhi and sent to the Raj Bhavan to complete the formalities ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the new cabinet may include Siddaramaiah along with the son of Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge. There is also speculation about the appointment of four Deputy Chief Ministers. Around 10 ministers from the current cabinet are expected to be dropped.

Top leaders to attend

Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are among the senior party leaders expected to be present at Lok Bhavan. Chief Ministers from Congress-ruled states including Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana will also attend. The Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand are likely to be there as well.

Just a day before the swearing-in, the party appointed Siddaramaiah as a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's highest executive body.

Power-sharing deal completed

The transition follows a formula worked out after the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, when both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar emerged as contenders for the top post. Under the arrangement, each was to serve as Chief Minister for two and a half years.

Siddaramaiah completed his term in November 2025 but remained in office. According to sources in the Karnataka Congress, Shivakumar was originally supposed to take over from December 2025. However, senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi were occupied with election preparations in Kerala, causing the delay.

Siddaramaiah had met Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and KC Venugopal in Delhi on 24 May, where he was asked to resign. He requested 48 hours and stepped down on 28 May.

Shivakumar's profile

The incoming Chief Minister, born in 1962 in Kanakapura near Bengaluru, is the MLA from Kanakapura and belongs to the influential Vokkaliga community. Within the Congress party, he is known as a leader who prevents MLAs from defecting and as a key strategist managing financial and logistical support for major operations.

Shivakumar is among the richest politicians in the country with assets worth over ₹1,413 crore, involved in real estate, mining, and hospitality businesses. His election affidavit lists only a Toyota Qualis car. He also has debts of around ₹263 crore.

There are more than 19 criminal cases registered against him. The ED is investigating him in two money laundering cases. Following IT raids at his residence in 2017, officials reportedly recovered ₹8.5 crore. He was arrested in 2019 in the same case and spent 50 days in Tihar Jail. The CBI is also probing a disproportionate assets case against him.

Satire platform Cockroach Janata Party alleges targeted crackdown as digital handles face disruptions amid massive growth

In a swift escalation of a bizarre digital standoff, the official website of the newly formed 'Cockroach Janata Party' (CJP) went completely down on Saturday morning. The platform, which originated as a satirical response to a senior judicial remark, became inaccessible around 9:00 AM, displaying a standard “site can’t be reached” error message.

The digital blackout follows closely on the heels of a massive online campaign launched by the group demanding the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the recent NEET exam paper leak controversy.

Digital platforms go dark

CJP founder Abhijit Dipke took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the development, directly accusing the central establishment of heavy-handedness. Dipke revealed that the platform had amassed significant traction before going offline, claiming that nearly 10 lakh users had registered as members on the site.

"Over 6 lakh people had already signed our online petition demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan," Dipke stated in an online broadcast. "Why is the government so incredibly scared of cockroaches? They can take down our web servers, but cockroaches never die."

The website outage was not the only disruption reported by the group. Earlier in the day, at around 8:25 AM, the party handles claimed their official Instagram account had been compromised and rendered inaccessible to administrators, though the public profile page remained visibly online.

Exponential social media surge

Despite the technical roadblocks, the group's digital footprint has exploded over the last 48 hours. By Saturday afternoon, the Cockroach Janata Party's Instagram following skyrocketed to over 2.2 crore users. Simultaneously, their primary communication channel on X crossed the 200,000-follower milestone.

The sudden surge in popularity has altered the ground reality for Dipke's family, residing in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Speaking to a regional Marathi news channel, Dipke’s parents expressed profound anxiety regarding their son's sudden political visibility and the looming threat of legal action.

"It is completely natural for us to feel terrified looking at the current atmosphere in the country," his father, Bhagwan Dipke, told reporters, adding that the family has spent sleepless nights worrying about potential arrest warrants. His mother, Anita, noted that they only learned of the digital movement through neighbors and preferred that their son focus on his professional career.

Allegations of foreign footprints

As the digital movement gained momentum, critics alleged that the massive follower base was artificial, claiming that only 9 percent of the interaction originated from within India, with the bulk coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Western nations.

The CJP leadership vehemently rejected these claims on Friday night, releasing internal analytics screenshots indicating that 96 percent of their actual target audience is base-located right inside India. The group has also had to navigate the permanent suspension of its original X account earlier this week, forcing them to operate under a backup page titled "Cockroach Is Back."

Roots in judicial commentary

The unusual political front traces its origin back to mid-May. During a courtroom hearing, remarks were reportedly passed comparing hyper-active, unemployed youth on social media to "cockroaches" who constantly critique state institutions.

While the judiciary later clarified that the statement was contextually misrepresented, Dipke capitalised on the phrase the very next day, launching the Cockroach Janata Party as a formal digital initiative representing the "lazy, unemployed, and chronically online" demographic.

Former AAP strategist at helm

The standard of execution behind the viral campaign stems from professional experience. Dipke, 30, is a seasoned digital media strategist who previously managed viral meme-based campaign content for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) between 2020 and 2022, notably during the Delhi Assembly elections.

Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Relations at Boston University in the United States, Dipke has been running the digital operation from abroad. Meanwhile, the domestic popularity of the name has triggered a corporate rush on the ground, with three separate commercial trademark applications already filed with the Trademark Registry portal to secure rights over the "Cockroach Janata Party" brand name for political and social services. Legal representatives for the group state they are exploring alternative web hosting options to restore the main campaign portal by Sunday evening.

The digital landscape in India witnessed unprecedented volatility over the last 24 hours as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a satirical youth movement, claimed its Instagram follower count breached the 1.93 crore (19.3 million) mark on Friday morning. The sudden spike comes amidst intensifying digital friction, including the suspension of the group’s primary handle on X (formerly Twitter) and alleged hacking attempts targeting their main broadcast channels.

New Handles Under Deadline Pressure

Following the abrupt suspension of their original communication handle on Thursday evening, CJP founder Abhijit Dipke launched a fallback account on X titled “Cockroach is Back”. The new digital asset, carrying the defiant bio line “Cockroaches don’t die,” went live at 2:29 pm and secured over 1.26 lakh followers by 9:30 am on Friday.

Before its unannounced suspension, the original account had amassed nearly two lakh followers.

Ground-level indicators suggest that the platform migration has not slowed down the page's momentum. Digital visibility metrics show the group's new handle trending regionally across major hubs like New Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai.

Inside the Lazy Manifesto

Operating via a rapidly deployed web interface, the digital outfit explicitly designates itself as a political front representing citizens "never counted by the establishment." Demanding systemic shifts under a tongue-in-cheek framework, the outfit features a structural manifesto focusing on legislative and institutional reforms.

The group’s charter lists key criteria for prospective digital enlistment:

Unemployment handled by force, choice, or structural principle

High volumes of active screen time, labeled as being "chronically online"

Professional proficiency in digital commentary and structural rants

CJP Digital Membership Enlistment Split (May 2026 Estimate)

┌──────────────────────────────────────┬─────────┐

│ Registered Online Sign-ups │ 1,00,000+│

│ Instagram Following Base │ 1.93 Cr │

│ Active X Platform Re-engagements │ 1.26 Lakh│

└──────────────────────────────────────┴─────────┘

Policy Under Ironic Framing

Despite its humorous presentation, the movement’s documented core manifesto targets direct institutional pain points. It promises to restrict post-retirement political allocations for members of the higher judiciary, specifically calling for an end to nominate former Chief Justices to the Rajya Sabha.

Additionally, the group proposes implementing a strict 50 percent reservation threshold for women across Parliament and the Union Cabinet within current structural limits. Other clauses demand aggressive scrutiny of independent corporate media licenses and propose absolute 20-year bans on legislative floor-crossing for elected representatives.

Tracing the Courtroom Roots

The viral wave originated from comments made during a routine Supreme Court hearing on May 15, 2026. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant reportedly observed that sections of unemployed youth were "wandering like cockroaches" and filling spaces within social media and local activism to launch systematic institutional attacks.

While the Chief Justice later issued an official clarification stating his comments were specific to individuals operating with fraudulent legal degrees and had been misrepresented, the label was quickly co-opted. Within 24 hours of the courtroom transmission, Dipke initiated the digital platform as a collective response mechanism for affected youth.

Strategy of a Meme Strategist

The structural architecture behind the Cockroach Janata Party reflects professional digital campaign engineering. Founder Abhijit Dipke, a 30-year-old public relations postgraduate from Boston University and a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, previously spent two years handling viral meme-driven media operations for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during critical regional assembly elections.

While political opponents on X have alleged that the rapid expansion hints at backdoor institutional support from established opposition blocks, Dipke has maintained that the organic spike is purely an outlet for real-world youth anxieties regarding economic constraints and competitive exam challenges.

Costumes on the Ground

The viral dynamic has begun spilling past purely digital parameters. On Thursday morning, small groups of volunteers outfitted in synthetic cockroach costumes were spotted organizing independent trash collection and cleaning drives along selected banks of the Yamuna River in the national capital.

"The objective is less about contesting formal block elections immediately and more focused on sustaining political literacy through the subversion of institutional language," a ground organizer stated on conditions of anonymity.

The phenomenon coincides with data points highlighted in recent employment summaries. According to findings from the Azim Premji University State of Working India Report 2026, structural unemployment among urban graduates aged 15 to 29 hovers near the 29 percent mark, providing a highly reactive baseline audience for satirical digital mobilization.

Cockroach Janta Party vs National Parasitic Front: India’s strangest political battle goes viral

Satirical outfits turn CJI’s ‘cockroach’ remark into million-follower movement

What began as an angry reaction to a controversial remark by Chief Justice Surya Kant has spiralled into what might be India’s most bizarre political showdown. On one side stands the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). On the other, the newly formed National Parasitic Front (NPF). Together, they have turned internet satire into a movement that has clocked over a million followers in less than a week.

Neither outfit is recognised by the Election Commission. Neither has a physical headquarters. But both have manifestos, merchandise, and enough memes to crash a server.

How a courtroom comment sparked a movement

It started on May 16. Speaking on unemployment, Chief Justice Surya Kant reportedly compared certain jobless youth to “cockroaches” and “parasites” feeding off the system. The remarks, delivered during a hearing, spread rapidly across social media.

Within hours, Abhijeet Dipke, a Boston-educated professional, posted a half-joking response: “What if all the cockroaches come together?” By evening, the Cockroach Janta Party had a logo, a Twitter handle, and a website.

“I never anticipated this kind of response,” Dipke told this reporter in a phone interview late Wednesday. “What started as an impulsive joke has become completely organic. People saw themselves in the insult.”

Instagram numbers that surprised everyone

By May 20, CJP’s Instagram following had crossed 1.1 million — briefly overtaking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s official handle on the platform. BJP’s Instagram count, as of Thursday evening, stood at approximately 1.05 million.

Party insiders (if a satirical outfit can have insiders) say the growth is driven entirely by young Indians frustrated with unemployment, exam pressures, and what they call “elite political insulation.”

One volunteer, who requested anonymity, said: “We did a Yamuna clean-up dressed as cockroaches. People thought it was funny. But they also joined.”

Enter the opposition: National Parasitic Front

No political vacuum survives long in India. On May 19, the National Parasitic Front launched as the self-declared “formal opposition” to the Cockroach Janta Party.

The NPF’s website frames “parasites” as citizens surviving within a broken system. Its language parodies revolutionary activism while making pointed arguments about governance failures.

“We attach ourselves to a broken system — not to feed off it, but to force it to change from within,” reads the Front’s official description.

Unlike CJP’s meme-heavy populism, the NPF leans into theatrical absurdism. One of its early posts asked: “Who are the real parasites? The unemployed or the politicians who loot public money?”

Manifestos with bite

Both outfits have published surprisingly coherent manifestos. The CJP’s demands include:

- No post-retirement Rajya Sabha seats for Chief Justices

- 50 per cent reservation for women in Cabinet

- Action against media outlets spreading misinformation

- Long electoral bans for defecting MPs and MLAs

The National Parasitic Front, meanwhile, has focused on institutional accountability, freedom of speech, and what it calls “criminal-free Parliament.”

Reading both documents, one notices a pattern: beneath the jokes lies genuine policy angst.

Politicians take notice

The satire has crossed into real political discourse. Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad have publicly engaged with CJP online. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told news agency PTI on Thursday that he was “incredibly intrigued” by the rise of such movements, calling it “an opportunity the Opposition must seize.”

Dipke, however, remains cautious. When asked whether CJP would formally register as a political party, he laughed. “Right now, we’re just cockroaches surviving on wifi and outrage. Let’s see how long the internet remembers us.”

What happens next?

Both outfits have already faced their first real test. On May 21, X (formerly Twitter) withheld CJP’s account in India following what the platform called “a legal demand.” Within hours, a new account named “Cockroach is Back” surfaced, crossing 21,000 followers in just over an hour.

“Cockroaches don’t die,” read its first post.

For now, the Election Commission has no comment. Political analysts are divided. Some call it a passing meme storm. Others see it as a glimpse into India’s digital-native political future — where satire organises faster than ideology.

What is clear is this: two insect-themed outfits have done something traditional parties struggle with. They made young Indians laugh, think, and click “follow” — all before breakfast.

A satirical online project mocking India's political system has unexpectedly become a major outlet for young people's discontent, amassing millions of followers in just days.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), launched as a parody after controversial remarks by the Chief Justice of India, has struck a chord with frustrated youth grappling with unemployment and economic pressures. What started as tongue-in-cheek memes has rapidly evolved into a digital movement reflecting deep-seated resentment among India's young population.

Spark from Supreme Court Remarks

The trigger came last week during a Supreme Court hearing when Chief Justice Surya Kant compared some unemployed youngsters and activists to cockroaches. He suggested that those without jobs or professional standing often turn to social media to criticise institutions.

The remarks sparked widespread backlash online, with many interpreting them as insensitive to the struggles of India's youth. Justice Kant later clarified that his comments targeted individuals with fraudulent degrees and were not meant to demean young people. However, the damage was done.

Within days, a new Instagram handle for the Cockroach Janta Party emerged, adopting the resilient insect as its symbol. The page quickly gained traction by posting sharp, humorous content targeting joblessness, exam paper leaks, corruption, and governance issues.

Explosive Growth on Social Media

By Thursday, the CJP's Instagram account had crossed 15 million followers, surpassing even Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) page on the platform, which stands at around 8.8 million.

Abhijeet Dipke, the founder and a political communications strategist currently studying at Boston University, described the surge as unintentional. “Nothing of this was intentional,” he said. The movement, he added, tapped into genuine anger among young Indians who lacked a platform to express their frustrations.

The party’s content mixes absurdity with pointed satire. Mock manifestos, campaign slogans, and memes have flooded timelines, highlighting issues like alleged voter manipulation, media-government ties, and the challenges of securing stable employment.

Symbol of Survival and Protest

The cockroach, often reviled but known for surviving tough conditions, has become an ironic emblem of endurance for many supporters. Young users have embraced it wholeheartedly, sharing personal stories of job rejections, delayed careers, and rising costs of living.

This digital rebellion mirrors broader discontent. India’s youth, who form more than a quarter of the population, continue to face high unemployment rates despite economic growth. Recent controversies surrounding competitive exam leaks have further eroded trust in the system.

Related development: Several opposition leaders have indirectly endorsed the trend, while volunteers have begun signing up through online forms. Some have even started appearing at local protests in cockroach-themed costumes, signalling a slow shift from online to offline action.

Background of Youth Frustration

The CJP’s rise comes amid ongoing challenges for India’s young demographic. Persistent job scarcity, inflation in daily essentials, and growing inequality have left many feeling sidelined. Critics argue that the government’s focus on certain narratives has overlooked these ground realities.

Dipke, who has previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party, noted a shift in public mood. “Five years ago nobody was ready to speak up against the government. The times are changing,” he observed.

The parody party’s manifesto uses humour to address serious concerns, including political polarisation and institutional issues, without aligning formally with any established outfit.

Pushback and Platform Challenges

Not everyone is amused. Supporters of the ruling party have called the CJP a temporary gimmick and an opposition-backed digital campaign. They predict its popularity will fade soon.

On Thursday, the original X (formerly Twitter) account of the CJP, which had gained around 200,000 followers, was reportedly withheld in India. Dipke promptly announced a new handle, posting defiantly: “Cockroach is back. You thought you can get rid of us? Lol.”

This episode has raised questions about online expression and platform policies in the country.

What Lies Ahead

For now, the Cockroach Janta Party remains largely a social media phenomenon. However, its founder believes it could influence mainstream political discourse. “This is the movement that has arrived in India,” Dipke said. “It will continue online, and if required, it will also come on the ground.”

Whether this satirical wave translates into sustained activism or remains a passing digital storm is yet to be seen. But its rapid ascent has undeniably highlighted the simmering frustrations of a generation seeking change.

What started as a digital joke by activist Abhijeet Dipke after a controversial judicial comment has transformed into a viral youth campaign.

From Satire to Online Movement

An internet-driven political campaign calling itself the Cockroach Janta Party has taken Indian social media ecosystems by storm, registering over one lakh online sign-ups within days of opening a basic registration link. The satirical outfit has quickly dominated political meme circles on X, Instagram, and Reddit, capturing the attention of mainstream political parties and youth organizations alike.

The movement was triggered following a public controversy regarding courtroom remarks made by a senior judicial officer on May 15 concerning young professionals, which led to widespread online backlash.

The Brains and the Manifesto

The digital campaign was conceptualized by 30-year-old political commentator Abhijeet Dipke, who shared a simple Google Form as a joke from Boston. The form invited young citizens to join a platform designed specifically for "the lazy, chronically online, and professionally unemployed."

Despite subsequent clarifications from the judiciary that the original oral remarks were strictly directed against individuals operating with fake professional degrees and not genuine job seekers, the Cockroach Janta Party campaign had already struck a chord with frustrated youth.

Quirky Manifesto Gains Traction

The movement's core appeal lies in its highly specific and satirical five-point manifesto, which blends internet humor with actual structural demands. Among its public declarations are calls for:

A strict ban on post-retirement administrative or political roles for senior judges.

A 20-year absolute election ban for defecting legislators who switch political affiliations.

An immediate 50 per cent reservation for women in legislative cabinets without altering baseline house limits.

The group has even drawn casual engagement from sitting members of Parliament belonging to opposition blocks like the Trinamool Congress, who interacted with the movement's official handle on X.

Real Dissatisfaction Behind the Memes

While critics argue that the platform functions primarily as an organized extension of anti-establishment rhetoric run by tech-savvy handles, digital trend analysts believe the rapid expansion reflects deep-seated socio-economic anxieties among Gen-Z voters regarding employment availability and institutional transparency.

"It has moved far beyond a simple internet joke now," Dipke stated during an interview. The group is currently planning a virtual national convention to discuss its future format, leaving many wondering if this digital rebellion will eventually seek formal political registration.

Telangana Chief Minister pitches Rahul as face of opposition alliance while flagging voter demand for quick results

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday strongly advocated for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to be projected as the prime ministerial face of the INDIA bloc for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He said the Congress would take the lead by announcing Rahul Gandhi’s name and then work to convince its alliance partners.

Speaking at a news conclave, Revanth Reddy made it clear that the move was not driven by any personal ambition on Rahul Gandhi’s part. “Becoming Prime Minister is not Rahul’s personal desire,” he said, adding that he had personally convinced the Congress MP to accept the responsibility during a recent meeting in Vikarabad.

The statement marks a significant intervention from a key Congress chief minister at a time when the opposition alliance is still navigating questions over leadership and strategy after recent electoral setbacks.

Allies to be Persuaded

Revanth Reddy outlined a clear sequence. The Congress, he said, would first declare Rahul Gandhi as its choice and then engage with INDIA bloc partners to build consensus. He expressed confidence that allies could be brought on board once the Congress took a firm position.

His remarks come amid competing signals within the opposition. Leaders from Trinamool Congress and DMK have earlier floated the names of Mamata Banerjee and M.K. Stalin as possible prime ministerial candidates. However, the political landscape has shifted following assembly election outcomes in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Setbacks for Regional Heavyweights

Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress was ousted from power in West Bengal after a decade in office. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK government led by M.K. Stalin also faced defeat. These developments have altered equations within the INDIA bloc, opening the door for fresh discussions on leadership.

Revanth Reddy’s pitch positions Rahul Gandhi as a unifying national figure capable of leading the alliance into the next general elections. The Telangana leader, who has emerged as one of the more assertive voices in the Congress, emphasised the need for the bloc to present a clear alternative.

‘Swiggy-Style Politics’ Concern

In a candid remark that reflected changing voter expectations, the Chief Minister expressed concern over the public’s evolving mindset towards politics. He observed that people now seek “Swiggy-style politics” — expecting instant delivery and direct results, much like quick commerce services.

This observation underscores the challenge facing political parties as voters, particularly younger demographics, demand faster governance outcomes and visible deliverables over traditional political processes.

Personal Equation with Naidu

Revanth Reddy also touched upon his own political journey. He recalled working in the Telugu Desam Party for nearly a decade and said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu still treats him with respect. Before switching to Congress, he had personally informed Naidu of his decision in Vijayawada, he added.

The reference highlights the fluid nature of political relationships in southern India and Revanth Reddy’s effort to strike a note of civility even while positioning his party strongly against the NDA.

Timing and Significance

The Telangana Chief Minister’s intervention assumes importance as the INDIA bloc looks to regroup ahead of upcoming state polls and the 2029 national contest. With Congress yet to formally announce its strategy, Revanth Reddy’s remarks could set the tone for internal discussions.

Party insiders say the focus remains on strengthening organisational machinery and presenting a coherent narrative. Rahul Gandhi has been actively touring different states and focusing on issues of unemployment, inequality, and institutional autonomy.

While reactions from other INDIA constituents are awaited, Revanth Reddy’s public backing adds momentum to the idea of Rahul Gandhi as the central face of the opposition. It also signals that Congress is keen to assert its role within the alliance rather than play a secondary part.

Political observers note that success will ultimately depend on how effectively the bloc manages internal contradictions and presents a joint front on key national issues. For now, Revanth Reddy has thrown his weight behind Rahul Gandhi, setting the stage for what could be a prolonged conversation within the opposition camp.

Former CM represents party before Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s bench; highlights attacks on workers following 2026 Assembly results.

In a move that caught the legal fraternity and political observers by surprise, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee arrived at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday afternoon dressed in a lawyer’s black gown. The former Chief Minister appeared before a Division Bench led by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Parthasarathi Sen to personally argue a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding alleged widespread violence against her party workers following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Unexpected appearance in courtroom

The sight of the TMC supremo in formal legal attire created a stir within the court premises. While Banerjee holds an LL.B. degree from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, her appearance as an arguing counsel is rare. Accompanied by senior advocate and party colleague Kalyan Banerjee, she walked into the Chief Justice's courtroom around noon.

The move is being seen as a high-stakes political statement following the recent election results, where the BJP secured a significant victory in the state.

Allegations of systemic violence

The PIL, filed by advocate Shirshanya Bandyopadhyay, alleges that TMC supporters and local leaders have been subjected to systematic attacks across several districts. During the proceedings, Banerjee informed the bench that the situation on the ground was one of "extreme distress."

"Our offices are being vandalized, and workers are being forced to flee their homes in many areas," she submitted before the court. She further alleged that women and children have not been spared in the unrest and claimed that at least 10 party workers had lost their lives in various incidents since the results were declared.

Chaos outside court premises

The legal drama was not limited to the courtroom. As Banerjee was exiting the High Court building following the hearing, she was met with "thief" slogans from a section of lawyers present on the premises. The situation briefly turned chaotic as TMC legal cell members and security personnel struggled to escort her to her vehicle.

Kalyan Banerjee later addressed the media, condemning the heckling. "The court is a place for legal arguments, not for public branding or political slogans. If a former Chief Minister can face such conduct inside the temple of justice, one can only imagine the plight of ordinary workers in remote villages," he said.

Context of the PIL

The petition highlights specific incidents in South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and parts of North Bengal. It seeks the court’s intervention to provide immediate protection to displaced workers and a directive to the state police to act against "hooliganism" that is allegedly occurring in plain sight.

The TMC has also linked this unrest to the "Special Intensive Revision" (SIR) of electoral rolls, an issue they previously challenged in the Supreme Court. The party maintains that the deletion of over 90 lakh names from the voter list had a direct bearing on the election outcome.

Judicial observation and next steps

Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s bench took note of the submissions and the gravity of the allegations. While the court did not pass an immediate interim order, it has asked the state administration to file a status report on the law and order situation by early next week.

The matter is expected to be heard again on Tuesday. For now, the images of Mamata Banerjee in a lawyer’s robe have dominated the political discourse in Bengal, signaling that the TMC is prepared to take its fight from the streets to the highest corridors of the judiciary.

The Assam Cabinet has officially approved the draft of the Uniform Civil Code Bill, scheduled for introduction in the state assembly on May 26, while exempting tribal communities.

In a significant move toward fulfilling a core electoral promise, the Assam Cabinet on Wednesday gave its green light to the draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the media following the cabinet meeting, confirmed that the legislation is set to be tabled on the floor of the Assembly on May 26, marking the final day of the ongoing session.

The development signals the BJP-led government’s intent to streamline personal laws in the state, making Assam one of the few Indian states to move toward a common legal framework for civil matters. The Chief Minister indicated that the Bill focuses primarily on the legalities surrounding marriage, divorce, and the emerging legal landscape of live-in relationships.

Focus on Mandatory Registration

A primary pillar of the proposed law in Assam is the compulsory registration of marriages and divorces. Sources familiar with the matter said the government aims to create a transparent legal trail for these civil unions to prevent litigation and protect the rights of spouses. By making registration mandatory, the state intends to bring all such personal milestones under a unified administrative umbrella, regardless of the religion of the parties involved.

The Chief Minister noted that the legislation draws inspiration from existing models in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Goa. While the core principles of the Uniform Civil Code aim for a singular legal standard, the Assam version has been tailored to meet the specific socio-political realities of the Northeast.

Tribal Communities Kept Outside

Recognizing the state's complex social fabric, the Cabinet has decided to fully exempt tribal communities from the purview of the UCC. This decision comes after extensive internal deliberations regarding the protection of indigenous identities. Tribal groups in Assam are governed by diverse customs, rituals, and traditional laws that have been preserved for generations.

"Assam is a land of many communities, each with its own separate traditions," Sarma told reporters. He clarified that the law would not interfere with the unique cultural practices of the state's tribal population, ensuring that their customary rights remain untouched even as the rest of the state transitions to the new civil code.

Aligning with National Trends

The push for UCC in Assam is part of a broader momentum within BJP-governed states. Uttarakhand recently became the first state in independent India to pass such a law, and Gujarat is reportedly in the advanced stages of drafting its own version. For the Sarma administration, this move is seen as a fulfillment of a "long-standing promise" made during the election campaign.

Supporters of the Bill argue that a common civil law is essential for gender justice and equality, replacing fragmented personal laws based on religious texts with a modern, secular legal framework. However, the move is expected to face scrutiny from opposition benches and certain community leaders who view it as an infringement on religious freedom.

Implementation and Legal Scope

Beyond marriage, the UCC is expected to cover aspects of inheritance and adoption. By creating a uniform set of rules, the government hopes to simplify the judicial process in civil disputes. Legal experts suggest that the inclusion of live-in relationships—modeled after the Uttarakhand Bill—might require individuals to register their status with local authorities, a move that has sparked debates on privacy in other states.

Local authorities in Guwahati have indicated that administrative preparations are already being discussed to handle the projected increase in civil registrations once the Bill is passed and notified.

Political Significance of May 26

The timing of the Bill’s introduction is noteworthy. Presenting it on the final day of the Assembly session ensures that the UCC remains the focal point of the state's political discourse heading into the monsoon season. The "NDA 3.0" government in Assam has positioned this as a landmark reform, characterizing it as a step toward a "New Assam" where development and legal uniformity go hand-in-hand.

As the state prepares for the May 26 session, all eyes will be on the specific clauses of the draft, particularly how it balances the push for uniformity with the diverse cultural landscape of the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.
