New CCTV footage shows accused firing at medical store after killings; family reveals history of harassment and threats

A chilling new video has emerged in the brutal murder of two sisters in Raipur’s Mowa area, showing the accused – a licensed firearm holder and bouncer by profession – walking into a medical store brandishing a pistol and firing rounds shortly after killing his sisters-in-law. No one was injured in that incident.

The Tuesday night killings have sent shockwaves through the locality, with the accused’s wife and mother-in-law now demanding capital punishment.

New Footage Emerges

CCTV visuals from Apollo Medical Store in Mowa show accused Jitendra Verma alias Jeetu entering the shop, pointing his pistol at a customer, demanding car keys, and firing inside the store. Staff members were seen fleeing for safety.

Police later arrested Verma, who had fled after shooting dead Geetanjali Verma and Durgeshwari inside their mother’s home.

‘Mummy Bachao, Jija Will Shoot’

The sequence of events began around 10 pm Tuesday when Verma arrived at his mother-in-law Savitri Bai’s residence. He demanded to speak to his 16-month-old daughter via video call and insisted on taking his wife Khileshwari back home.

“He forced his way inside. Geetanjali was sleeping in the hall. She told him ‘didi is not home’. But he wouldn’t listen,” Savitri Bai recounted, breaking down.

Within moments, Verma pulled out his licensed pistol and opened fire. Geetanjali collapsed instantly. When Durgeshwari came downstairs from the terrace and saw her sister lying in a pool of blood, she screamed. Verma shot her too – the bullet striking near her neck.

“My daughters were writhing in front of me… I kept folding my hands… but he didn’t stop,” the mother said.

Years of Abuse, Says Wife

Khileshwari, Verma’s wife and elder sister of the deceased, has alleged a long pattern of violent behaviour. The couple married in 2020 and initially lived nearby before Verma lost his job.

“He started drinking. He would doubt my character though he himself was wrong. He had also misbehaved with my younger sisters,” Khileshwari alleged.

She claimed Verma had fired at the walls of their home twice before and had threatened her multiple times with his pistol. Just 5-6 days before the murder, she said, he aimed the gun at her again.

“I got scared and went to my sister’s place in Urakura with my daughter. But he finished my sisters instead,” she said. “I want him hanged.”

Licensed Weapon Raises Questions

The fact that Verma possessed a valid gun license – issued in 2020 and valid until December 2026 – has emerged as a key concern. He obtained the license citing VIP security and personal protection needs, being a professional bouncer.

Police verification before issuing licenses typically checks criminal records, mental state, local police reports, and genuine requirement. District collector-level approval follows.

Officials now admit the need for review. “Those with violent tendencies, mental instability, or involvement in serious disputes need license reconsideration,” a senior officer said.

Police have indicated a district-wide review of gun licenses may follow.

Investigation Underway

Verma remains in custody. Authorities are examining whether his background check during license issuance was thorough enough given the family’s claims of prior threats and firing incidents at home.

The case has once again raised public concern over easy access to licensed firearms in domestic violence situations. For Savitri Bai and Khileshwari, the wait is for justice – and answers that may never bring their daughters back.

In the Surajpur kidnapping case, police say a former driver orchestrated the abduction of a 62-year-old woman, demanding ₹22 lakh ransom before arrest

A 62-year-old woman who was abducted from her home in Surajpur has been rescued safely, with police revealing that the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping was the victim’s former driver. The accused, along with two associates, is said to have plotted the crime to extort ₹22 lakh, reportedly motivated by knowledge of the family’s retirement savings.

The incident, which unfolded late last month, has drawn attention due to the level of planning involved and the familiarity the accused had with the victim’s household.

Incident unfolds at home

According to police, the abduction took place on April 29 in Sarnapara village under the Surajpur Kotwali police station limits. The victim, identified as Lalita Kujur, was alone at home when the incident occurred.

Her husband, who had travelled to Ambikapur for vehicle repairs with a driver, returned in the afternoon to find the house ransacked. There were signs of a struggle, and blood stains were visible at a few spots, officials said.

Shortly after, a call was received from the woman’s phone. An unidentified caller demanded ₹22 lakh for her safe release. The phone was switched off soon after.

Police launch search

Senior officers treated the case as urgent. According to officials, three teams were formed to track down the abductors and locate the victim. Search operations were carried out across nearby areas, and initial leads were examined.

During the course of investigation, suspicion fell on a former driver who had earlier worked for the family. Police detained the suspect, identified as Roshan Devangan, for questioning.

“During interrogation, he admitted involvement in the crime,” a police officer said, adding that further details emerged soon after.

Familiarity led to crime

Investigators said the accused had worked with the family for nearly 18 months and was aware that the victim’s husband had retired from South Eastern Coalfields Limited and received a substantial settlement.

“According to officials, the accused planned the kidnapping after learning about the retirement funds,” a senior officer said.

He allegedly roped in two accomplices, including one identified as Sheikh Ishu. The group then visited the victim’s house under the pretext of asking for water. Once inside, they overpowered her, tied her hands and legs, and covered her face with tape.

Ransom demand and escape

The woman was then transported on a motorcycle to a location in Dumaria. From there, the accused used her phone to contact her husband and issue the ransom demand.

Police said the abductors later switched off the phone and moved locations to avoid detection.

However, with police teams intensifying patrols and search operations, the accused reportedly panicked.

Victim abandoned midway

Fearing arrest, the abductors abandoned the woman along a bypass road between Dumaria and Chandarpur. Before fleeing, they removed the tape and restraints and allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by burning them.

Despite being injured, the woman managed to reach a nearby house and informed locals, who then alerted her family and the police.

She was immediately taken to the district hospital in Surajpur for treatment. Officials said her condition is stable.

Arrests and seizure

Following the breakthrough, police arrested Roshan Devangan and later apprehended Sheikh Ishu while he was allegedly attempting to flee towards Bilaspur. A third accused remains absconding, and search efforts are ongoing.

Authorities also seized a motorcycle, a scooter, and two mobile phones believed to have been used in the crime.

Ongoing investigation

Police officials said the investigation is continuing to trace the absconding suspect and gather further evidence.

“The Surajpur kidnapping case highlights how prior knowledge of a family’s financial situation was misused,” an officer noted, adding that more details could emerge as the probe progresses.

Police have booked the owner and director of Thakur Petrochemicals for allegedly siphoning off 90 metric tonnes of seized LPG gas and selling it illegally.

In a massive scandal involving the misappropriation of government-seized property, the Mahasamund police have unearthed an LPG theft racket worth an estimated Rs 1.5 crore. The case involves the owner and director of Thakur Petrochemicals, who allegedly emptied six seized gas capsules—originally handed over to them for safe custody—and sold the fuel in the black market through domestic and commercial cylinders.

The fraud came to light after the accused attempted to mislead the district administration by claiming the gas had "leaked" from the containers. However, a technical investigation revealed a calculated heist, leading to the registration of an FIR at Singhoda police station.

Seizure of 90 MT LPG

The matter dates back to December 2025, when Singhoda police intercepted six LPG gas capsules. Due to a lack of valid legal documentation, the vehicles, carrying a combined load of 90 metric tonnes of LPG, were impounded. Concerned about the safety hazard of parked gas tankers inside the police station premises, the police moved the District Collector to shift the vehicles to a secure facility.

Following the Collector’s directive, the Food Department contacted Santosh Singh Thakur, owner of Thakur Petrochemicals. On March 30, 2026, the six tankers were officially handed over to the company for safekeeping at its plant in Urla, Abhanpur, located roughly 200 kilometers from the police station.

Elaborate Siphoning Operation

Sources familiar with the matter said the company management exploited a critical lapse: the tankers were not weighed at the time of handover. Taking advantage of this, Santosh Singh Thakur and Director Sakin Thakur allegedly moved the trucks to their plant but delayed official weighing for over a week.

Between April 6 and April 8, while the tankers were parked near the plant, the gas was systematically transferred into the company’s bullet tanks. "When their storage reached capacity, they reportedly filled the remaining gas into private tankers and cylinders, selling it to various agencies in Raipur using 'kaccha' (unofficial) bills," an official involved in the probe confirmed.

Technical Experts Debunk Leakage

To cover their tracks, the accused reported to the administration that the LPG had leaked out. However, the police roped in national-level experts to verify the claim. The investigation concluded that it is physically impossible for 20 tonnes of gas to leak from a single capsule over three months without causing a major explosion or fire. The experts noted that the capsules were structurally sound, pointing directly to manual extraction.

Financial Discrepancies Surface

The paper trail further nailed the suspects. A three-day audit of company records revealed that in April, Thakur Petrochemicals officially purchased only 47 tonnes of LPG but recorded sales of 107 tonnes. "The math didn't add up. They were selling nearly 60 tonnes of gas that never existed on their purchase registers," said a senior police officer. Investigators also found that the "unofficial" registers for April had been destroyed or hidden to vanish the evidence of illegal transactions.

Raids and Arrests

Mahasamund police have since conducted raids at the facility, seizing seven LPG tankers, four large bullet tanks, 100 cylinders, and digital evidence including DVRs and computers. While the main accused, Santosh Singh Thakur and the director, remain at large, the police have arrested one staff member, identified as Nikhil Vaishnav (41).

Teams have been dispatched to track down the fleeing management. The police are also looking into the role of the agencies that purchased the stolen gas without valid invoices.

Rewa quarry accident highlights illegal mining concerns as villagers demand strict action after woman’s death

A 35-year-old woman died after falling into a stone quarry in Rewa on Tuesday morning, in an incident that has once again drawn attention to alleged illegal mining activities in the area. The matter occurred near Baijnathpur in Naubasta village, where complaints of unauthorised excavation have surfaced repeatedly over the past few months.

The deceased has been identified as Sumitra Kevat. According to initial reports, she fell into a deep quarry pit, triggering panic at the site. In the immediate aftermath, a tractor present at the location also overturned, adding to the chaos and concern among those present.

Incident unfolds quickly

Locals said the sequence of events unfolded rapidly during the morning hours. Sumitra had reportedly gone to the quarry area when she slipped and fell into the pit. Family members and others were nearby at the time but were unable to prevent the fall.

The tractor overturning soon after the fall created a tense situation, with villagers gathering at the site as word spread. Some attempted to assist before authorities arrived, though by then, it was too late.

Illegal mining concerns

Residents of Naubasta and nearby areas allege that illegal stone extraction has been ongoing for months without effective intervention. They claim heavy machinery and tractors frequently transport mined material, often operating without adequate safety measures.

“Accidents like this have been waiting to happen,” said a local resident, pointing to the depth of the quarry pits and lack of fencing or warning signs. According to villagers, repeated complaints to authorities have not resulted in sustained action.

Police response

According to police officials, the woman had entered the quarry area where illegal excavation was suspected. “She fell into a deep pit, which led to her death,” a police officer said, adding that a case has been registered.

Station in-charge Ghanshyam Mishra confirmed that a team reached the spot soon after receiving information. The body was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination.

“We are investigating all aspects of the case, including the role of illegal mining. Necessary action will be taken based on findings,” he said.

Family present at site

Sources familiar with the matter said that members of the victim’s family were present when the incident took place. The suddenness of the inciedent left them in shock, with little time to react.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from the tractor overturning, though it heightened the urgency of the situation and raised questions about operational safety at such sites.

Villagers demand action

Following the incident, villagers gathered and voiced strong objections to the alleged inaction against illegal mining. They demanded immediate steps to halt unauthorised quarrying in the area.

Residents argued that stricter monitoring and enforcement could prevent such tragedies. “If authorities had acted earlier, this could have been avoided,” one villager said, echoing a sentiment shared by many at the site.

Investigation underway

Authorities have indicated that a detailed inquiry is being carried out. Officials are expected to examine whether safety norms were violated and identify those responsible for illegal mining activities.

The Rewa quarry accident has once again brought focus to the risks associated with unregulated excavation, particularly in rural pockets where oversight may be limited. For now, the administration faces mounting pressure to ensure accountability and prevent further incidents.

A 35-year-old woman lost her life after slipping into a deep pit dug for illegal stone mining in Naubasta village under the Baijnathpur area on Tuesday morning. The incident also triggered chaos when a tractor overturned nearby, heightening fears over unchecked illegal mining operations in the region.

Local residents described the morning as ordinary until the sudden cry alerted everyone. Sumitra Kewat had gone to the mining site along with family members when she fell into one of the abandoned or freshly dug pits. The fall proved fatal. In the ensuing panic, a tractor at the spot overturned, though no other serious injuries were immediately reported.

Rising Concerns Over Illegal Mining

Naubasta and surrounding areas in Rewa district have seen persistent complaints of rampant illegal stone extraction for several months. Villagers allege that heavy volumes of stones are being quarried and transported without proper authorisation, often under the cover of early mornings or late evenings. The activity has left the landscape dotted with dangerous, unfenced pits, turning the area into a hazard zone.

“These pits are deep and sudden. If the administration had acted on our repeated complaints, this tragedy could have been avoided,” said several locals who gathered at the spot soon after the incident. They pointed out that such accidents have become a recurring risk due to the lack of effective checks on mining mafias operating in the vicinity.

Family Present at the Time of Mishap

According to initial accounts, Sumitra Kewat was not alone. Other family members were present when the incident occurred around Tuesday morning. The exact sequence—whether she was collecting stones or simply traversing the uneven terrain—remains under investigation. Police said she was in the area linked to illegal mining activities.

The tractor overturn added to the confusion, with villagers rushing to the site and creating a scene of commotion. Some helped pull out the vehicle while others attended to the victim, though she was declared dead on the spot.

Police Reach Spot, Body Sent for Post-Mortem

Baijnathpur police swung into action immediately after receiving information. Station in-charge Ghanshyam Mishra confirmed that a team reached the location promptly. The body of the deceased was taken into possession and sent for post-mortem.

“Investigation is underway. We are also looking into the illegal mining angle,” Mishra said. Officials indicated that action would be taken against those involved in unauthorised extraction if evidence surfaces.

Villagers Demand Immediate Crackdown

Anger among residents was palpable as they accused the administration of turning a blind eye to the growing menace. Many claimed that despite multiple representations, illegal quarrying continues unabated, endangering lives and damaging the local environment. They demanded a swift ban on such activities and proper fencing or filling of dangerous pits to prevent future mishaps.

This incident comes at a time when illegal mining remains a sensitive issue across parts of Madhya Pradesh. While authorities periodically launch drives, ground-level enforcement often appears weak, allowing operators to resume work quickly.

Safety Risks and Public Impact

The death of Sumitra Kewat has once again brought into focus the human cost of unregulated mining. Women and daily wagers from nearby villages frequently venture into these areas in search of minor earnings or resources, exposing themselves to grave risks. The uneven land, loose soil, and sudden drops have made the region treacherous, especially during early hours when visibility can be low.

Local leaders and social workers have called for stricter monitoring, including regular patrols and use of technology to track suspicious vehicle movement carrying mined material. They also stressed the need for alternative livelihood options so that villagers do not depend on risky, illegal activities.

As the investigation proceeds, police are expected to question family members and witnesses to piece together the full circumstances. The district administration is likely to face renewed pressure to address long-standing grievances related to illegal stone mining in Rewa’s rural pockets.

For now, the family of Sumitra Kewat mourns their loss while the village waits to see whether this tragedy will finally force concrete steps to curb the dangerous practice that has claimed yet another life.

Rewa: Poison in Roti, Beer, and Water

It wasn’t just the liquor. Or the food. Or even the water. In a chilling revelation that has left investigators stunned, forensic teams have confirmed that every single consumable item in the couple’s hotel room—from tandoori roti and paneer to beer, whisky, and a sealed water bottle—was laced with poison.

The bodies of Ravish Saket (25) and Kajal Saket (21) were recovered on the evening of April 23 from ‘The Empire Hotel’ in the Chorhata area. They had checked in just 24 hours earlier, on April 22. Police now say the couple had decided to die together after watching the 1988 romantic tragedy ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ (QSQT), starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla.

A Friend’s Suspicious Role

Investigations have zeroed in on a third individual, Atul Saket, a friend of the deceased man. Sources familiar with the matter said Atul’s role was not merely passive.

He allegedly arranged the hotel room, paid a ₹500 advance using his own ID, and facilitated the couple’s escape from their families. On the night of April 22, while both families were frantically searching, Atul deliberately misled them. He told Kajal’s relatives he had no information, while informing Ravish’s family that the boy had simply left the bus stand.

"It was Atul who arranged for the room, the food, and possibly the poison," a police officer involved in the probe said, requesting anonymity.

Family Opposition to Relationship

The core trigger, according to preliminary police inquiries, remains familial opposition to the relationship. Both families live in the Bela Saket locality, roughly 25 km from Rewa, and were neighbours. Neither side was agreeable to the marriage.

Kajal’s mother, Manju Saket, said her daughter had returned from Mumbai just two days before the incident, where she worked a corporate job and lived with family. “She left home saying she was going shopping,” the mother said, still in disbelief. Ravish had told his family he was attending a wedding procession.

‘How Could They Drink So Much Alone?’

The forensic autopsy and scene details have raised more questions than answers. Four bottles of alcohol and beer were recovered from the room, along with four small boxes of an unidentified poison.

Ramkaran Saket, the boy’s grandfather, voiced a suspicion that echoes across the grieving families. “How could two people consume this much alcohol on their own? Something is being hidden,” he said. He has demanded access to hotel CCTV footage, alleging that others may have entered the room. The family also accused the police and hotel staff of removing the bodies before relatives could arrive, and of not preserving Kajal’s body in a deep freezer, leading to decomposition.

The ‘QSQT’ Connection

A darker psychological layer has emerged. Investigators confirmed the couple had recently watched ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’—a film famous for its tragic ending where lovers are separated by death. Officials are examining their phone and browsing history to understand if the film acted as a direct catalyst.

While authorities caution against blaming cinema alone, they admit the timing is stark. The probe is also looking into other videos and content the couple consumed in the days before the suicide.

Police: Social Pressure Primary Cause

Chorhata Police Station in-charge, Vijay Singh, stated that while the friend’s role is suspicious, the primary cause appears to be social and domestic pressure. “Initial reports point to a love relationship and the families’ refusal to accept it. The friend misled both sides, but the final decision was theirs,” Singh said.

A formal marg (inquest) has been registered. Police are questioning hotel staff, reviewing missing CCTV footage, and have detained Atul Saket for sustained interrogation. The hotel management is also under scrutiny for allowing the couple to check in without valid ID proof, taking only Atul’s identification.

Kajal’s father, fighting back tears, told reporters he was unaware of the relationship. “Had we known, we would have tried to handle the situation. We never imagined this.” Ravish’s father added, “I was misled. Otherwise my son would be alive today.”

Cash Vanishes Midway

A major Fraud Case has surfaced in Raipur after a driver allegedly decamped with Rs 50 lakh in cash and a car entrusted to him by his employer. The incident took place in the Khamhardih police station area, where the accused reportedly used deception to escape with the money in broad daylight.

Police said the accused, identified as Krishna Sahu, had been working as a driver for a city-based businessman for nearly a year. During this period, he had gained the trust of the employer before allegedly carrying out the theft.

Businessman Files Complaint

According to officials, the complainant is Umesh Prasad, a construction businessman residing in Geetanjali Nagar in Raipur. He had reportedly handed over Rs 50 lakh in cash to his accountant and driver, asking them to transport the amount safely to his residence.

The cash was placed inside a car bearing registration number CG 04 QG 663. The accountant and driver then left for Geetanjali Nagar as instructed. What appeared to be a routine movement of funds soon turned into a major criminal case.

Escape Near Police Station

As per the complaint, the incident unfolded near a paan kiosk located a short distance from Khamhardih police station. Police sources indicated that the accused driver asked the accountant to step out of the vehicle and buy gutkha from the nearby stall.

The moment the accountant got out, the driver allegedly started the vehicle and sped away with both the cash and the car. The accountant was caught off guard and could not react in time. He immediately informed the businessman about the incident.

The accused has been identified as Krishna Sahu, a resident of Bhatagaon. Investigators said he had been employed by the businessman for the past year and had earned the confidence of the family through regular service.

Officials suspect the accused may have planned the act in advance, given the speed and precision with which he executed the escape. His mobile phone has remained switched off since the incident, making immediate tracking difficult.

Police Begin Probe

Attack Inside STF Colony

A double murder inside the STF Colony under Supela police station limits in Durg district on Saturday morning triggered panic and raised serious security concerns in the area.

According to local accounts, she asked her daughters to run. One of the girls managed to escape and alert neighbours, while another hid inside a bathroom to avoid the attack.

Both girls suffered injuries and were admitted to hospital. Doctors said their condition remains serious, though stable.

Locals reportedly snatched the knife from her and informed police. Officers from Supela police station reached the spot and took the woman into custody.

Investigators said the motive behind the attack is still under examination. However, police are probing the possibility of a personal dispute and suspected relationship-related tensions.

Sources indicated the accused had visited the same house a day earlier, but was allegedly sent back after a brief exchange with the family.

Police have not officially confirmed the nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim’s family. Officers said all angles, including personal conflict and prior interactions, are being examined in the CG Murder Case.

The CG Murder Case has sparked fear in the STF residential colony and renewed concern over security inside police housing areas.

Residents questioned how an outsider managed to enter the premises and carry out a fatal attack in broad daylight. The case has also drawn attention to the risks posed by unresolved personal disputes escalating into violent crime.

As the investigation continues, police are expected to reconstruct the timeline, verify the accused’s movements and establish the exact trigger behind the attack

A failed ransom bid in the Indore kidnapping case ended within seven hours on Thursday after police rescued two boys and arrested four neighbours who allegedly plotted the abduction to make quick money. According to officials, the accused had surveyed children from well-off families in their locality before picking up two boys from a public garden in Indore’s Lalaram Nagar.

Children Traced Fast

The two boys, Naitik, 9, and Samrat, 11, were allegedly abducted on Thursday evening from a garden in Lalaram Nagar by people known to them. Police said the children were taken to a flat in Dutt Nagar, where they were kept while the accused prepared to seek ransom from their families.

The Indore kidnapping case was cracked after a relative of one of the boys alerted family members when the children failed to return home. The information quickly reached police, triggering a city-wide search operation.

Four Accused Arrested

Police arrested four accused within hours of the complaint. They were identified as Vineet Prajapati, 22, his sister Radhika Prajapati, 19, Lalit Sen, 21, and his wife Tanisha, 20.

Investigators said Vineet and Radhika were the alleged masterminds of the plot, while Lalit and Tanisha helped execute the kidnapping. All four lived in the same neighbourhood and were known to one another.

Shortcut For Money

According to police, the accused planned the abduction after prolonged financial distress and unemployment. Vineet had reportedly been out of work for six months after losing his job and was struggling with unpaid rent and debt.

Lalit, a driver, was also unemployed for months. Tanisha had worked earlier in the private sector but was reportedly facing financial strain. Officials said the group decided to target children after discussing ways to earn money quickly.

Police sources indicated that Tanisha had asked Radhika about a “shortcut” to make money. During that conversation, Radhika allegedly suggested kidnapping children who visited a local garden and demanding ransom from their families.

Children Were Surveyed

Police said the accused had watched children visiting the garden for several days and identified those they believed came from financially strong households. The plan was to abduct children from affluent families and demand ransom.

However, investigators said the accused misjudged their targets. Instead of picking children from wealthy homes, they allegedly abducted two boys from working-class families. Officials said the accused were unaware that one child’s father runs a juice cart while the other earns by playing the dholak.

Lured With Promise

Police said the children were taken away on the pretext of being shown birds and animals. One of the accused allegedly persuaded the boys to accompany her before taking them to a flat.

During questioning, the boys told police they were made to sit inside the room, given food and allowed to play mobile games. Later, when they insisted on going home, the accused allegedly threatened them after failing to secure money. Officials said the children were then told to hide when police arrived and were made to believe “goons” had come to harm them.

Police Rescue Operation

Indore Police tracked the children using mobile location inputs and surveillance leads. According to officials, plainclothes personnel monitored the suspected flat after noticing unusual activity, including repeated switching of lights and movement inside.

Once suspicion was confirmed, police raided the premises and rescued both boys safely. The four accused were detained on the spot.

Police Commissioner Santosh Singh monitored the operation through the night, officials said. Senior officers coordinated teams across multiple police station limits to ensure the children were traced before any ransom exchange could take place.

Earlier Crime Plan

During interrogation, police found that the four had allegedly discussed another serious crime days earlier. Officials said the group had first planned to rob a jewellery shop about a week ago but dropped the idea after it failed to materialise. Investigators believe the kidnapping plan was then drawn up as an alternative.

Three Masked Men Attack Family

Three masked assailants stormed the residence of a former block Congress vice-president in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa district late Thursday night. The attackers shot dead the leader’s 19-year-old son and critically injured his younger sibling.

The incident occurred around 12:30 am in Karhi village under the Birra police station limits. Police said the assailants entered the house and opened fire indiscriminately. The victim, Ayush Kashyap, suffered bullet wounds to the head and chest and died on the spot. His 16-year-old brother Ashutosh remains critical.

Parents Locked In Separate Room

According to preliminary investigation, the three masked men first locked the parents inside a room. They then targeted the children sleeping in another room. Ayush, a second-year BA LLB student, was hit twice. Ashutosh, a Class 10 student, sustained a bullet injury on his shoulder.

Cash And iPhone Stolen

Police sources indicated that the attackers fled with around Rs 60 in cash and an iPhone. The family has three children. Their daughter Prerna Kashyap, a BPM officer posted in Jagdalpur, was also home on leave during the attack. She witnessed the shooting.

Sister Recounts Earlier Visit

Prerna told police that three young men had come to their house a week ago asking about Ayush. She added that all three attackers wore masks during Thursday night’s assault. The family said the assailants also took three mobile phones before escaping.

Father Alleges Sand Trade Rivalry

The victim’s father, Sammlal Kashyap, alleged that the murder stemmed from a sand mining business dispute. “Ayush had recently purchased a hyva truck and a JCB. He had become active in the trade. That is the only reason someone would want him dead,” Kashyap told police.

Local Congress leaders, including MLA Vyas Kashyap and Jaijaipur MLA Baleshwar Sahu, visited the crime scene late Thursday night.

Police Launch Massive Manhunt

Acting Superintendent of Police Nivedita Paul and Additional SP Umesh Kashyap reached the spot along with cyber and forensic teams. Officials confirmed that the attackers used motorcycles. Police have set up barricades across the town and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas.

“We are also analysing call detail records to identify the suspects,” an officer said. The body has been sent for post-mortem. The younger brother continues to receive treatment at the district hospital.

What Next

Authorities have formed multiple teams to track down the three masked assailants. Investigators are examining whether a recent land dispute or sand mining rivalry motivated the attack. Police expect to make arrests within 48 hours based on technical surveillance leads.

Daughter Witnessed Brutal Knife Attack

A man accused of stabbing his wife to death in front of their teenage daughter allegedly died by suicide on Thursday night, ending a 17-day-long manhunt. Police found the body of the accused, Deepak Mishra, in Pithampur, Dhar district, early on Friday morning.

Body Recovered From Pithampur

The development comes nearly two and a half weeks after the primary incident shook the Sagar locality. According to officials, Mishra had been evading arrest since April 7. Local police were alerted about a suspicious body, later identified as the absconding accused. No suicide note has been recovered from the spot yet.

Attack Happened Before Holi

The gruesome attack took place on the night of April 7. Officials said Mishra, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, attacked his wife, Shikha Mishra, with a kitchen knife. He inflicted multiple blows on her stomach and neck. The couple’s elder daughter, Disha, was present in the house and witnessed the assault on her mother.

Victim Died During Treatment

Shikha was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in a critical condition. However, doctors could not save her. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The police registered a case of murder and launched a search for the husband, who had fled the spot immediately after the crime.

Affair, Instagram Led To Fights

According to officials familiar with the matter, a pattern of intense domestic friction had emerged. The Additional Superintendent of Police, Udit Mishra, told reporters that the wife’s family alleged the accused was involved in an extramarital relationship. “The couple used to quarrel frequently over this issue. The accused was also upset over his wife using Instagram actively. It became a recurring flashpoint,” an officer stated.

Police Probe Both Angles

Investigators are now verifying call records and social media activity. Preliminary findings suggest that a combination of the alleged affair and arguments over social media usage created a volatile atmosphere at home. The police have recorded statements from family members and neighbours. Authorities have not ruled out examining the minor daughter’s testimony about the night of the attack.

Autopsy Underway, Case Continues

The body of the accused has been sent for post-mortem examination. While the primary accused is dead, the police told this English news portal India that they will submit a final closure report before the court after completing all procedural formalities. Officials confirmed that no other family member has been named as an accomplice so far.

Authorities have urged citizens to report any history of domestic violence to local police stations. Counselling resources for families under stress are also being suggested by district social welfare bodies. Further updates are awaited as the forensic report comes in.
