PM Modi Says Naxalism Nears End, Targets Congress Over Past Handling of Insurgency

Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed Maoist violence is in its final phase, while accusing Congress of remaining silent during the peak years of Left-Wing Extremism.

The debate over India's long-running Maoist insurgency resurfaced on Monday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Naxalism is "counting its last breaths" and credited the NDA government's development-driven approach for weakening the insurgency. Speaking at a media event in New Delhi, Modi sharply criticized the Congress, alleging that leaders who now frequently invoke the Constitution had remained silent when large parts of the country were grappling with Maoist violence. His remarks come amid continued political sparring over governance, internal security and development in tribal regions. The Prime Minister said the government's "Nation First" approach has combined security operations with welfare initiatives, infrastructure development and improved governance to reduce the influence of Left-Wing Extremism. The comments have once again brought national attention to a movement that was once considered India's biggest internal security challenge.

According to the Prime Minister, previous governments largely treated Naxal-affected regions as permanently backward areas, while the NDA focused on integrating them into the mainstream through roads, education, healthcare, digital connectivity and employment opportunities.

Modi did not directly name Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, but his remarks were widely seen as a reference to Gandhi's practice of carrying a copy of the Constitution during public events and political campaigns.

Focus on Development

During his address, Modi highlighted several flagship initiatives, including the Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India and the promotion of local products. He said these programs were designed around the principle of putting national interests first.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks programmes, claiming that more than 100 districts and over 500 blocks previously categorized as backward regions have witnessed measurable improvements in governance and development indicators.

Officials have frequently argued that better infrastructure and public services in tribal and remote areas have reduced the appeal of extremist groups and strengthened state presence.

Security and Governance

The Prime Minister's comments echoed earlier statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During the Budget Session of Parliament in March, Shah stated that India had effectively become free from Naxal influence and reiterated the government's commitment to eliminating the remaining pockets of Left-Wing Extremism.

According to government data and security assessments, the geographical spread of Maoist activity has declined significantly over the past decade. Areas once considered strongholds of insurgent groups have seen increased security deployment alongside development projects.

However, security experts note that while violence has reduced substantially, isolated incidents and operational challenges remain in some forested regions of central India.

Background of the Naxalite Movement

The Naxalite movement began in 1967 in Naxalbari, a village in West Bengal's Darjeeling district. Over time, it expanded across several states, creating what became known as the "Red Corridor."

At its peak during the early 2000s, the insurgency affected large parts of central and eastern India and posed a significant challenge to internal security. Successive governments adopted a mix of security operations and welfare measures to address the issue.

Analysts say the current political debate reflects broader questions about how development, governance and security policies should be balanced in historically marginalized tribal regions.

As the government continues to emphasize both development and counter-insurgency measures, the future trajectory of Left-Wing Extremism remains an important issue in India's national security and governance agenda. The latest remarks by the Prime Minister are likely to keep the discussion at the center of political and policy debates in the coming months.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi made a one-day visit to Chhattisgarh on Sunday, stopping at Abhanpur near Raipur to address the Congress party's ongoing ten-day residential training camp for newly appointed district and city unit presidents. The visit lasted around four hours before Gandhi left for the airport — but not before pulling over at a roadside tea stall, where he had chai and fed biscuits to PCC chief Deepak Baij.

The camp, being held at Ashutosh-Alka Agarwal Mangal Bhavan in Abhanpur's Chandi Mor area, is part of the party's Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan — a ground-up organisational exercise ahead of future elections. Gandhi addressed district and city Congress presidents in a special session, focusing on booth-level strengthening, anti-BJP political narrative, and electoral strategy. Before that, he met senior leaders and former ministers for about 40 minutes, followed by a separate meeting with a delegation of around 70 people including former MLAs and MPs.

Sachin Patel, Bhupesh Baghel, TS Singh Deo, and Charandas Mahant were among the senior leaders present. The camp itself covers a range of sessions beyond political speeches — participants are being trained in yoga, martial arts, personality development, media handling, public outreach, and booth management. Leaders have also been assigned to stay in villages, understand ground-level conditions under MGNREGA, and engage with communities on issues like drug abuse.

The day, however, had its share of embarrassing moments for the party. State Leader of Opposition Charandas Mahant was caught in the crowd crush at the venue gate and reportedly could not get inside — a video of the incident circulated widely. A party worker from Jaijapur in Sakti district had ridden a motorbike all the way to meet Gandhi, having earlier made a failed attempt to meet him in Delhi the same way.

There was also quiet resentment over the welcome posters. Three state Congress co-in-charges — Sajrita Letfhlang, Sampat Kumar, and Vijay Jangid — objected to their photos being missing from the posters while other leaders' pictures featured prominently. The matter, according to sources, has been flagged to the party high command.

BJP hit back swiftly. MLA Purandar Mishra questioned what Gandhi had come to teach Congress workers, sarcastically asking whether it was a training in corruption or recycled political gimmicks. He also took a dig over Lord Ram, noting the irony of Gandhi visiting Chhattisgarh — described as Ram's maternal home — given the Congress's past statements on the issue. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, attending a Yoga Day event in Ambikapur, remarked drily that people know what happens wherever Rahul goes.

Congress fired back just as quickly. Former MLA Vikas Upadhyay called Mishra an "accidental MLA" making unnecessary statements to stay relevant, adding that if BJP could not treat his apparent ment+al distress, Congress would be willing to step in.

The training camp has Patel scheduled to address participants in upcoming sessions as well, with the party positioning the exercise as its most serious attempt yet to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots before the next round of state and national elections.

Rahul Gandhi Chhattisgarh Visit: BJP-Congress Trade Fierce Barbs

Gandhi is scheduled to spend around four hours at a 10-day residential party training camp in Abhanpur, Raipur district, where he will interact directly with district and city chiefs to chalk out the party's upcoming political strategy.

According to the official itinerary, the Congress leader will land at Raipur airport at 2:00 PM and fly back to Delhi at 6:00 PM. However, hours before his arrival, political temperatures in the state soared over sharp rhetorical broadsides from both camps.

'Will He Teach How to Extract Gold from Potatoes?'

Taking a dig at the visit, BJP MLA from Raipur, Purandar Mishra, questioned the true motive behind the training session. "He is welcome to Chhattisgarh, the birthplace of Lord Ram's mother, Kaushalya. But let’s not forget this is the same Lord Ram whose very existence Rahul Gandhi and his party once questioned," Mishra said.

The BJP legislator further questioned what exactly Gandhi intended to teach the cadre. "What is he here to train Congress workers in? Is it a refresher course on corruption, or is he going to teach them his old formula of extracting gold from potatoes?" Mishra quipped, referring to a heavily circulated, clipped video of the Congress leader from years ago.

Adding weight to the BJP's offensive, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who was in Ambikapur for an International Yoga Day event, also took a swipe at the leader of the opposition. "Wherever Rahul Gandhi goes, everyone knows what eventually happens to the party's fortunes there," Sai told reporters.

'Mishra is Mentally Unsound, Congress Will Pay for His Treatment'

The Congress hit back aggressively at the BJP’s barbs, launching a direct personal attack on the BJP MLA. Former Congress MLA Vikas Upadhyay claimed that Mishra had lost his mental balance and required immediate medical attention.

"Purandar Mishra has become mentally unstable and needs urgent treatment. If the BJP cannot afford his medical care, the Congress is more than willing to step in and fund his treatment," Upadhyay said.

Labeling Mishra an "accidental MLA," Upadhyay alleged that the BJP leader was making outrageous statements simply to elevate his political stature and hog airtime in the regional media.

Behind Closed Doors: Rebuilding the Cadre

Amid the high-decibel political bickering, the 10-day 'Sangathan Srijan' (Organization Creation) residential camp, which commenced on Friday at a private venue near Abhanpur's Chandi Mode, marks a significant organizational push for the Congress. State party in-charge Sachin Pilot, who reached Raipur earlier to oversee the preparations, stated that similar grassroots exercises are being rolled out across multiple states to counter a "highly arrogant" BJP government.

"This training program goes beyond standard political speeches. The newly appointed district and city presidents have been assigned fieldwork, including staying overnight in villages, analyzing the implementation of MNREGA, and studying local socio-economic issues like substance abuse." — Congress Party Source

The camp's daily routine begins with yoga and martial arts sessions, followed by specialized workshops conducted by political experts. These sessions focus on data management, booth-level coordination, media handling, and constructing a counter-narrative against the BJP. Rahul Gandhi’s closed-door session this afternoon is expected to deliver the final tactical blueprint to the state leadership ahead of upcoming local body and institutional elections.

Priyanka Gandhi Questions NEET Costs, Compares Burden to Education Budget

Congress leader claims families spend ₹1.32 lakh crore annually on NEET preparation as Rahul Gandhi raises concerns over student stress during a Kota outreach programme.

The debate over India's competitive examination system intensified on Wednesday after Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that families of students appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) collectively spend around ₹1.32 lakh crore every year. She argued that the amount is nearly equivalent to the Union government's annual education budget of ₹1.40 lakh crore.

In a post on social media, Priyanka Gandhi also alleged that loan waivers worth ₹16 lakh crore had been extended to select business groups, drawing a contrast between public spending on education and financial support provided to corporate entities.

Her remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi visited Kota, Rajasthan, and interacted with students and their families under the "Chhatro Ki Goonj" programme. The discussion focused on academic pressure, competitive examinations, and the mental health challenges faced by students preparing for high-stakes entrance tests.

Focus on Student Pressure

Addressing students at Kota's Dussehra Ground, Rahul Gandhi said the current education system places immense pressure on young people and often contributes to anxiety and emotional distress.

He urged collective efforts to create an environment where students are not pushed toward extreme measures due to academic stress. Rahul also claimed that preparation for major competitive examinations, including NEET and JEE, costs Indian families nearly ₹5 lakh crore annually.

Kota, known as India's coaching hub, attracts thousands of aspirants every year preparing for medical and engineering entrance examinations.

NTA Revises Admit Card Process

Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced a significant change in the process for downloading NEET-UG 2026 re-examination admit cards.

According to the revised procedure, candidates can now download their admit cards even if they have not completed bank account verification. Earlier, verification was mandatory before access to admit cards was granted.

The agency clarified that students will remain eligible for fee refunds even if bank verification is completed after downloading the admit card. The move is expected to benefit candidates who faced technical or documentation-related delays.

Re-Examination on June 21

The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination is scheduled to be conducted on 21 June in a single shift from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM. Candidates will also receive an additional 15 minutes for administrative formalities.

Earlier this month, NTA introduced several changes for the re-exam. The duration of the test has been extended from 180 minutes to 195 minutes, and candidates will be provided with four rough-work sheets along with increased space for calculations and notes.

Background of the Re-Test

The original NEET-UG 2026 examination was conducted on 3 May across the country. However, allegations of question paper leaks and examination irregularities surfaced from multiple states soon after the test.

Following preliminary investigations and reports of potential malpractice, the examination was cancelled on 12 May. Subsequently, the Central government and investigating agencies recommended a fresh examination to ensure fairness and transparency in the admission process.

Importance of NEET

NEET remains India's largest medical entrance examination and serves as the gateway for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing, and other healthcare-related courses.

The examination is used for admission to more than one lakh seats in medical and allied health institutions across the country, including premier institutions such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research.

With the re-examination approaching, concerns over exam integrity, student welfare, and the rising financial burden of competitive test preparation continue to remain at the centre of the national education debate.

In a major push to restructure and revive its grassroots cadre, the Congress party is scheduled to host a comprehensive 10-day training camp for its newly appointed district and city unit presidents in Raipur later this month.

The residential training program, scheduled from June 21 to June 30, 2026, will be held at the Agniyotam Alka Avatar Mangal Bhavan located near Chandi Mor in the state capital. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is confirmed to attend the session for a day to interact with the state leadership and share organizational strategies.

High-level directive from AICC

The announcement came via an official directive issued by All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal. The central leadership has made attendance mandatory for all newly designated district and city chiefs appointed under the party’s ongoing Sangathan Srijan Campaign.

This upcoming session follows an earlier two-day orientation program held on February 10, 2026, at Indira Bhavan in New Delhi, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi had initially briefed the new appointees.

Focus on local poll preparation

Senior party leaders in Raipur indicated that the 10-day window is specifically designed to transition from macro-level orientation to micro-level execution on the ground.

"The initial briefings in Delhi were about the broad vision. The Chhattisgarh Congress training camp in Raipur will focus on local realities—booth management, countering the ruling party's narrative, and mobilizing workers for the impending urban body and panchayat elections," a senior Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) functionary stated.

Mandatory presence for senior leaders

The AICC directive has placed a heavy responsibility on the state unit to ensure seamless logistics and active participation.

According to the schedule, top state leaders, including AICC secretaries in charge of the state, the PCC chief, and the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, have been instructed to dedicate maximum time to the camp. The letter explicitly mandates that senior state leaders must be present for at least five days of the session, including the first two and the final two days of the program.

Grassroots revival strategy

The camp is being viewed as a crucial step for the party to stabilize its base after leadership transitions following past electoral setbacks. Local party insiders suggest that training the fresh batch of district presidents is essential to aligning the party’s core ideology with modern campaign techniques and public outreach.

Participants have been instructed to reach the venue by 12:00 PM on June 21 to commence the formal sessions. Formal invitations and agendas are currently being dispatched to all district headquarters.

Over 35 Chhattisgarh Youth Congress leaders reach Delhi for presidential interviews

In a parallel development indicating intense internal activity within the state unit, more than 35 contenders from Chhattisgarh arrived at the Congress national headquarters in New Delhi on Friday.

The candidates are appearing for high-stakes interviews for the position of the State Youth Congress President. The process has gained significant traction amid murmurs of factional disagreements regarding candidate preferences.

Responding to speculations about internal discontent among senior state leaders over the selection process, Youth Congress leader Devendra Yadav dismissed the reports as mere political gossip, stating that the interviews are part of a routine, democratic screening process to find the most capable grassroots leader for the youth wing.

INDIA Bloc Meeting Concludes in Delhi with 5-Point Consensus

INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on June 8, 2026, ends with five-point consensus on electoral issues, education crisis, economy and regular coordination. Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav among key attendees.

The seventh meeting of the INDIA bloc concluded at the Constitution Club here on Monday, with top opposition leaders reaching a five-point consensus on key national issues ranging from electoral reforms to economic distress. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced the decisions after hours of deliberations, signalling an attempt by the alliance to regroup ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, and several others attended the meeting in person, while Uddhav Thackeray and Hemant Soren joined virtually. Kharge later told reporters that 23 to 25 parties participated and a broad agreement was reached despite differing regional concerns.

Leaders Gather After Two-Year Gap

The meeting comes nearly two years after the last formal INDIA bloc gathering in Delhi in June 2024. In the interim, the alliance navigated multiple state polls with mixed results — fighting united in some states like Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand, but separately in others including Kerala and West Bengal.

Senior leaders described the Monday huddle as an opportunity to address common challenges posed by the ruling NDA. Kharge highlighted issues such as alleged misuse of central agencies, economic slowdown, and youth unemployment.

Five Key Decisions Announced

After the meeting, Kharge outlined the consensus points. The alliance decided to send a letter to the Chief Justice of India raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

The bloc also unanimously demanded the immediate resignation of the Union Education Minister, citing lapses in the conduct of NEET and CBSE examinations that affected lakhs of students.

A third point called upon the Centre to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the “precarious” economic situation, rising prices, unemployment, and farmers’ issues.

Also Read: Internal rumblings surface as INDIA bloc convenes in national capital

Regular Coordination Planned

In a bid to strengthen unity, parties agreed to meet physically every two months. The next meeting is scheduled for Hyderabad in August. Additionally, parliamentary floor coordination will continue during the upcoming Monsoon Session, with daily morning meetings at the office of Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.

Kharge emphasised that all parties shared their views freely and consensus emerged on fighting together on people-centric issues.

UnderCurrents of Tension

The meeting took place against a backdrop of visible strains within the alliance. Posters targeting Rahul Gandhi and the Congress appeared on Akbar Road earlier in the day, which Youth Congress workers later removed. Several leaders dismissed the posters as “cheap tactics” possibly aimed at creating divisions.

Regional frictions were also evident. Parties from Kerala and Jharkhand have expressed unhappiness over recent Congress decisions, while seat-sharing talks for future polls remain delicate. Mamata Banerjee’s attendance drew attention amid reports of some Trinamool Congress MPs exploring other options. Despite these challenges, leaders projected a show of unity, with Sonia Gandhi and Mamata seen sharing warm moments.

Sharad Pawar, who attended with daughter Supriya Sule, noted that no immediate major decisions were expected but discussions would continue. He spoke of evolving a “formula” to prevent rigidity and maintain alliance cohesion, especially with no major national polls for the next few years.

Opposition Eyes United Front

The INDIA bloc, formed in 2023, had tasted success in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, restricting the BJP from a majority on its own. Since then, it has seen both victories and setbacks in state elections. Monday’s meeting is seen as an effort to recalibrate strategy ahead of the 2029 general elections and upcoming state polls in states like Uttar Pradesh.

Congress leaders expressed confidence that the alliance remained united at the national level despite local differences. RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha and others called for addressing internal issues on appropriate platforms rather than through public posturing.

As the Monsoon Session approaches, the opposition is expected to press the government on economic concerns, education reforms, and electoral integrity. The decisions taken today are likely to shape their parliamentary strategy in the coming weeks.

The development comes at a time when opposition parties are seeking to counter what they describe as “misgovernance” on multiple fronts. How effectively they translate today’s consensus into coordinated action will be watched closely in the days ahead.

In a 16-minute video shared on social media platform X, he claimed the project could lead to large-scale ecological damage and questioned its transparency and intent.

The remarks come amid ongoing political debate over one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure proposals, estimated at around ₹90,000 crore. The Centre, however, maintains that the project is aimed at strengthening India’s strategic presence in the Indo-Pacific region and boosting maritime trade through a major transshipment hub.

Video claims and allegations

In his video message, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government has framed the Great Nicobar Island Project as a defence-linked initiative, while its actual purpose is to enable commercial development in a sensitive ecological zone. He also urged citizens to oppose the project and sign a public petition.

He further claimed that the project could impact forests, coral reefs, and indigenous tribal communities living on the island. According to him, the scale of proposed development raises serious environmental and social concerns that have not been adequately addressed.Environment and tribal concerns

The Congress leader said the project violates provisions of the Forest Rights Act and could threaten the livelihood and land rights of tribal communities in the region. He also alleged that large-scale tree felling and ecological disruption may occur if the plan is implemented in its current form.

He referred to his recent visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, stating that the region’s biodiversity, including coral reefs and dense forests, must be protected from large-scale construction activities.

Strategic importance of project

The Great Nicobar Island Project is planned as a multi-component infrastructure initiative, including an international transshipment port, airport, power plant, and a new township. The government argues that it will enhance India’s maritime capabilities and strengthen its position along key global shipping routes.

Officials have previously stated that the project is designed to improve trade connectivity, support defence infrastructure, and boost economic activity in the region. The Centre has rejected allegations that the initiative is driven by private interests.

Political debate intensifies

The issue has become a point of political confrontation, with opposition leaders questioning environmental clearances and project approvals. Rahul Gandhi has been one of the most vocal critics in recent weeks, raising concerns over transparency and consultation with local communities.

The government, on the other hand, continues to defend the project as a long-term strategic investment aligned with India’s national security and economic growth priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Congress leader's swearing-in marks the completion of a power-sharing agreement with Siddaramaiah, who has now been appointed to the party's highest decision-making body

DK Shivakumar will be sworn in as the 24th Chief Minister of Karnataka this evening. The ceremony is scheduled for 4 pm at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru, bringing to a close weeks of speculation over the leadership transition in the state.

The Congress Legislature Party had elected Shivakumar as its leader on 30 May, two days after Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation. Shivakumar now takes over from Siddaramaiah, who served as Chief Minister from 20 May 2023.

Cabinet list awaited

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shivakumar said the Congress high command would release the list of ministers for the new cabinet either by 10 am or later in the afternoon today. He clarified that names circulating in various media outlets were not official.

The list will be finalised in Delhi and sent to the Raj Bhavan to complete the formalities ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the new cabinet may include Siddaramaiah along with the son of Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge. There is also speculation about the appointment of four Deputy Chief Ministers. Around 10 ministers from the current cabinet are expected to be dropped.

Top leaders to attend

Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are among the senior party leaders expected to be present at Lok Bhavan. Chief Ministers from Congress-ruled states including Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana will also attend. The Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand are likely to be there as well.

Just a day before the swearing-in, the party appointed Siddaramaiah as a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's highest executive body.

Power-sharing deal completed

The transition follows a formula worked out after the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, when both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar emerged as contenders for the top post. Under the arrangement, each was to serve as Chief Minister for two and a half years.

Siddaramaiah completed his term in November 2025 but remained in office. According to sources in the Karnataka Congress, Shivakumar was originally supposed to take over from December 2025. However, senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi were occupied with election preparations in Kerala, causing the delay.

Siddaramaiah had met Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and KC Venugopal in Delhi on 24 May, where he was asked to resign. He requested 48 hours and stepped down on 28 May.

Shivakumar's profile

The incoming Chief Minister, born in 1962 in Kanakapura near Bengaluru, is the MLA from Kanakapura and belongs to the influential Vokkaliga community. Within the Congress party, he is known as a leader who prevents MLAs from defecting and as a key strategist managing financial and logistical support for major operations.

Shivakumar is among the richest politicians in the country with assets worth over ₹1,413 crore, involved in real estate, mining, and hospitality businesses. His election affidavit lists only a Toyota Qualis car. He also has debts of around ₹263 crore.

There are more than 19 criminal cases registered against him. The ED is investigating him in two money laundering cases. Following IT raids at his residence in 2017, officials reportedly recovered ₹8.5 crore. He was arrested in 2019 in the same case and spent 50 days in Tihar Jail. The CBI is also probing a disproportionate assets case against him.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, NTA Director General Abhishek Singh, and senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office attended the deliberations.

The meeting comes amid continued fallout from the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2025 examination following serious paper leak allegations.

Crisis Management Underway

Sources familiar with the matter said the discussion focused on restoring confidence in the medical entrance examination process and reviewing the steps taken so far by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and investigating agencies. The government is understood to be looking at tighter protocols for future examinations while addressing immediate concerns of students and parents.

This is the latest in a series of high-level reviews since the controversy erupted.

NTA Extends Refund Deadline

In a related development, the NTA extended the deadline for candidates to submit bank account details for fee refunds till 11:50 pm on June 22. The previous deadline was May 27.

Candidates who appeared for the cancelled examination can log into the official NTA portal using their credentials and update their banking information for the refund process. Officials said the extension was provided to accommodate students facing technical or logistical difficulties.

Timeline of the NEET Row

The NEET-UG exam was conducted on May 3 across 551 cities in India and 14 international centres, with over 23 lakh candidates appearing for it. Irregularities came to light on the evening of May 7, prompting the matter to be handed over to central agencies. The examination was formally cancelled on May 12.

The decision to scrap the test was taken to ensure fairness, though it triggered widespread anxiety among aspirants, many of whom had prepared for years.

Rahul Gandhi Meets Family of Deceased Aspirant

On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met the family of Pradeep Meghwal, a NEET aspirant from Rajasthan who died by suicide following the paper leak reports. Gandhi held the central government responsible for the tragedy and described it as a failure of the system.

In a post on X, the former Congress president said the death was “not just a suicide but the result of a broken and corrupt system.” He held the “Modi-Pradhan duo” accountable.

CBI Makes Fresh Arrests

Meanwhile, the investigation into the leak case is progressing. On Wednesday, Rouse Avenue Court remanded two accused — Dr Manoj Shirure and Tejas Harshad Kumar Shah — in CBI custody till June 1. Two others, Prahlad Kulkarni and Shivraj Raghunath Motegaonkar, were sent to judicial custody till June 10.

The CBI has conducted searches at 49 locations so far and arrested 13 people in connection with the case. Several documents, laptops, and mobile phones have been seized.

Students Await Clarity

The developments have left lakhs of students and their families worried about the future schedule of the re-examination. Many aspirants have demanded a swift and transparent process for the next test, along with stronger safeguards against leaks.

Education authorities have maintained that the integrity of the examination will be upheld at all costs. The NTA is expected to announce fresh dates soon after internal reviews and consultations.

The high-level meeting at Rajnath Singh’s residence signals the government’s urgency to contain the damage and prevent long-term erosion of trust in the country’s competitive examination system. With multiple competitive exams lined up in the coming months, the outcome of these deliberations will be closely watched by students across India.

Congress high command pushes leadership change amid power-sharing buzz

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to resign on Thursday, paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post, according to multiple sources. The move comes after a marathon meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Tuesday.

The development marks a significant shift in Karnataka politics, ending months of speculation over the leadership tussle between the two senior Congress leaders.

High Command Meeting Lasts Over Six Hours

Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar arrived in the national capital on Monday night and held discussions lasting nearly six hours with the party high command. Sources indicated that Rahul Gandhi urged Siddaramaiah to step down and offered him a Rajya Sabha seat along with an important national role in Delhi.

The Chief Minister, who initially showed reluctance, is understood to have eventually agreed to the party's decision after consultations with his supporters. He has reportedly called his ministers for a breakfast meeting on Thursday morning, where the resignation is likely to be formalised.

Venugopal Dismisses Speculation

However, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, who was present in the meeting, downplayed the reports. "The speculations are only speculations. There is no truth in them. The meeting discussed Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections," he said.

Despite the official denial, ground reports and sources close to the developments suggest a clear push for change.

Power-Sharing Formula Comes into Play

The leadership churn traces back to the 2023 assembly elections when Congress formed the government in Karnataka. Supporters of DK Shivakumar have long claimed an informal understanding of a two-and-a-half-year power-sharing formula. The government completed 2.5 years in November 2025, intensifying the demand for a transition.

Siddaramaiah, the party's prominent OBC face and AHINDA leader, has enjoyed strong support among a large section of MLAs. Sources say he had earlier warned that any forced removal could lead to a split, with 50-60 legislators potentially backing him. He is also believed to have stated that he would not work under Shivakumar.

Strategy for 2028 Polls

Congress appears keen to manage the transition carefully to avoid rebellion and prepare for the 2028 assembly elections. Siddaramaiah will turn 80 by then, and the party hopes a fresh face could help counter anti-incumbency. There are indications that Siddaramaiah's son could be accommodated in the cabinet as part of the settlement.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is also understood to have backed the leadership change during the Delhi meeting.

Mixed Reactions Within Party

The power tussle has been simmering for over a year. While Shivakumar's camp points to the rotational arrangement, Siddaramaiah's loyalists have consistently denied any such deal. In recent months, both leaders maintained a public show of unity even as differences persisted on cabinet expansion and other issues.

Shivakumar, a powerful Vokkaliga leader credited with strengthening the party organisation, has positioned himself as the natural successor. Siddaramaiah, on the other hand, has been credited with several welfare initiatives during his tenure.

As of Wednesday evening, the situation remained fluid. A Congress Legislature Party meeting is expected soon after the resignation to formally elect the new leader.

Political observers note that the change could bring new energy to the government but also carries risks of internal unrest if not handled delicately. Karnataka remains crucial for Congress in the south, and the party will be keen to ensure stability ahead of future electoral battles.

The coming days are likely to witness hectic political activity in Bengaluru as the transition unfolds.

Fadnavis Calls Rahul’s BJP Govt Toppling Claim ‘Daydreaming’

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis termed Rahul Gandhi’s prediction of the Modi government’s fall within a year as ‘daydreaming’ while Piyush Goyal accused the opposition of conspiring with the ‘toolkit gang’ to destabilise India.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday described Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s prediction of the central government’s collapse as mere “daydreaming,” even as senior BJP leaders launched a sharp counterattack accusing the opposition of conspiring to destabilise the country.

The fresh war of words erupted after Rahul Gandhi reportedly told a closed-door meeting of the Congress minority department’s advisory council on Saturday that the Narendra Modi government would fall within a year.

Sharp Retort from Fadnavis

Fadnavis, a key BJP face in Maharashtra, did not mince words while reacting to the Congress leader’s assertion.

“Rahul Gandhi’s claim of toppling the BJP government is nothing but daydreaming,” he said, according to sources. His remarks reflect the ruling party’s confidence in its political stability despite challenges from the INDIA bloc.

Goyal Accuses Opposition of ‘Toolkit Gang’ Conspiracy

Union Minister Piyush Goyal took the attack further, alleging a deeper conspiracy involving Congress, other opposition parties, and what he termed the “toolkit gang.” In a strongly worded post on X, Goyal claimed that Rahul Gandhi and his allies were attempting to incite violence and create chaos across the country.

He wrote that their “hatred for India” was so intense that they could not accept any positive development under the Modi government. Goyal asserted that the people of India were “wise enough” to see through such designs and that the INDI alliance’s attempts to throw the country into turmoil would ultimately fail.

The term “toolkit gang” gained prominence during the 2021 farmers’ agitation when a document shared by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg sparked allegations of coordinated online campaigns against the government. The BJP has since used the phrase to describe what it sees as orchestrated efforts by opposition-backed groups to shape narratives and amplify protests.

Rahul’s Prediction at Congress Meet

According to sources familiar with the Saturday meeting, Rahul Gandhi expressed confidence that the Modi government’s exit was certain within the next 12 months. The remarks come at a time when the Congress and its allies have been intensifying criticism over issues ranging from economic distress to social justice.

The Congress has not yet issued an official statement clarifying or confirming Rahul’s reported comments. However, party workers on social media have been amplifying the narrative of growing public discontent against the central government.

BJP Sees Foreign Hand

Goyal’s reference to foreign forces and a larger conspiracy reflects the BJP’s long-standing position that certain opposition actions are not purely domestic but influenced by external elements aiming to weaken India’s progress. He claimed the opposition was working at the “behest of foreign forces” to set the country on fire.

Senior BJP leaders maintained that such predictions have been made repeatedly in the past and have failed to materialise, pointing to the party’s strong performance in recent elections.

Political Temperature Rises

The exchange has once again heightened political temperatures in the national capital. With several state elections on the horizon and the 2029 Lok Sabha polls already becoming a talking point, both sides appear to be sharpening their attack lines early.

Congress leaders, on their part, have been highlighting what they call “failures” of the Modi government on employment, inflation, and farmers’ issues. Rahul Gandhi’s recent public interventions have focused heavily on wealth inequality and alleged crony capitalism.

Public Reaction and Impact

In political circles, reactions remained divided along party lines. While BJP supporters dismissed Rahul’s prediction as wishful thinking, opposition voices saw it as a reflection of ground realities and shifting public sentiment.

Analysts believe such verbal duels are part of the ongoing political strategy as parties position themselves for future battles. The use of strong language like “daydreaming” and “toolkit gang” is also aimed at dominating the news cycle and setting the narrative in the coming days.

As the war of words continues, political observers will be watching whether the opposition can translate its aggressive posturing into tangible electoral gains or if the BJP’s counteroffensive will further consolidate its support base.

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress leader VD Satheesan took oath as Chief Minister of Kerala on Monday morning at the Central Stadium, marking a significant political shift in the state as the Congress-led United Democratic Front assumed power after a decade.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath to Satheesan, who chose to take it in Malayalam. In a rare move not seen in 60 years, the entire cabinet of 21 members, including the Chief Minister, was sworn in together during the ceremony. The last such instance was in 1962 when R. Sankar took oath with his full team.

Historic Cabinet Formation

The development comes days after the UDF's decisive victory in the assembly elections, where the alliance secured 102 seats out of 140, with the Congress emerging as the single largest party winning 63. This result ended the 10-year rule of the Left Democratic Front led by Pinarayi Vijayan.

Senior Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were present at the venue, displaying unity. Rahul Gandhi and Satheesan shared a warm hug after the oath-taking. Outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar also attended the event.

Several chief ministers from Congress-ruled states, including Karnataka's Siddaramaiah, Telangana's Revanth Reddy, and Himachal Pradesh's Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, graced the occasion. Shashi Tharoor was notably absent due to a foreign trip to Boston.

Ministers Take Oath

Among those who took oath were senior leaders like Ramesh Chennithala, K. Muraleedharan, PK Kunhalikutty, Mons Joseph, Sunny Joseph, and Shibu Baby John. Newer faces in the cabinet included 14 first-time ministers such as PC Vishnunadh, Roji M. John, Bindhu Krishna, N. Samsudheen, CP John, and others.

Congress leaders expressed optimism and a sense of responsibility. PC Vishnunadh described the moment as "a proud moment and a great responsibility," adding that portfolios would be decided soon. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan acknowledged the challenging role ahead but pledged to work for success, noting it as a "liberation of a generation."

Ground Reactions and Political Context

The swearing-in ceremony drew large crowds and reflected the enthusiasm among Congress workers who had long awaited this day. Congress MP K Suresh termed it a celebration of victory, while Shafi Parambil promised to fulfil all election commitments made to the people.

The selection of Satheesan as Chief Minister followed some internal deliberations. While Rahul Gandhi was initially inclined towards KC Venugopal, strong support from party workers and allies in Kerala tilted the balance in favour of Satheesan, a seasoned leader with deep roots in the state unit.

Opposition Voices

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain reacted by saying that while Kerala would have a Congress government, the agenda would be dictated by the Muslim League, and that the BJP would keep a close watch. The presence of UDF allies, including the Indian Union Muslim League, has been a point of political commentary.

What Lies Ahead

The new government is expected to hold its first cabinet meeting soon to take key decisions. With 14 fresh faces in the ministry, the focus will likely be on delivering on promises related to governance, development, and addressing local issues that contributed to the UDF's strong mandate.

Satheesan, aged 61, brings experience as a long-time Congress legislator and state leader. His leadership will now be tested as he steers the coalition government through its initial months.

The ceremony at the Central Stadium unfolded smoothly under clear skies, with tight security and visible excitement among supporters who gathered since early morning.
