The killing of Manipuri musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh in southeast Delhi has triggered outrage across the North-East community, with political leaders and civil society groups demanding a swift investigation and accountability for those responsible.

Singh, who was in his mid-50s, died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of men outside his home in Kilokari village late Sunday night. Police said the incident followed a dispute over noise and alleged nuisance near his residence. Seven men have been arrested and a juvenile has also been apprehended in connection with the case. 

The incident has prompted renewed concerns among members of the North-East community over their safety in Delhi. Some community members have also raised the possibility of a racial motive, but police have said no such motive has been established so far and that the circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation. 

What happened to Vikram Singh

According to police and reports from Singh’s family, the musician came out of his home in Kilokari at around 11.30 pm on Sunday after a group of men were allegedly making excessive noise and creating a disturbance nearby.

An argument reportedly followed, after which Singh was allegedly assaulted. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Holy Family Hospital by his son, where he later died. Police said the investigation is continuing to establish the precise circumstances of the attack. 

Police have identified the accused as workers associated with dhabas and food stalls in the area. Seven adults have been arrested and a juvenile has been apprehended, according to reports. 

Singh’s contribution to Manipuri music

Singh’s death has resonated particularly strongly because of his long association with the music community in Manipur and Delhi.

He was known as a guitarist and music teacher and had performed with bands including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark. He later moved to Delhi, where he continued his association with music and taught guitar to children. He was also the eldest son of renowned Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala. 

Members of the music fraternity and the wider North-East community have described his death as a major loss.

The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University (NESSDU) condemned the killing and called for a swift and impartial investigation.

Community members also gathered outside Sunlight Colony Police Station, demanding that all those involved in the assault be identified and prosecuted.

A candlelight march was also held in Delhi following Singh’s death, reflecting the anger and concern among members of the Manipuri and wider North-East community. 

The demands have centred on ensuring that the investigation is conducted without delay and that the accused face due legal process.

Political leaders seek strict action

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed concern over the death and urged Delhi Police and the Delhi government to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated.

He described Singh’s contribution to music as significant and called for swift action based on the evidence collected during the investigation.

The killing has also become a political issue, with opposition voices questioning whether authorities are doing enough to protect members of the North-East community and ensure accountability in cases of violence.

Some opposition leaders have described the incident in broader terms, accusing the government of allowing a “culture of impunity”. Such political characterisations remain allegations and are not an established finding of the police investigation.

Three Dead in Delhi Fire Incident

A shocking case of alleged arson has come to light in southeast Delhi’s Tughlakabad area, where a minor girl is accused of setting fire to a five-storey residential building in the early hours of June 12, leading to the death of three people. According to police, the minor confessed during questioning that Sarita, a 27-year-old resident of Girinagar in Govind Puri, had pushed her to commit the act. Sarita reportedly provided the girl with petrol and matches, directing her to target a scooter belonging to Deepak, who lived on the fifth floor. The dispute reportedly stemmed from a money-related issue.

Sarita is said to have acted on the instructions of two other individuals — Niranjan (33) and his brother Rajkumar (27). The trio allegedly hatched the plan to settle a personal vendetta. All four accused have been arrested and further investigation is underway.

Emergency calls reporting the fire poured in between 2:35 am and 2:37 am on Thursday. Fire tenders rushed to the spot, but thick smoke and flames made rescue operations challenging. Firefighters had to cut open the roof lock and use ladders to reach trapped residents. The fire was finally brought under control around 3:45 am.

Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene. “Vehicles parked on the ground floor started exploding one after another,” one neighbour told reporters. “We rushed with water but the flames were too intense.” Some residents were rescued from the rear side of the building. Locals used sarees to help people climb down and even cut through security grilles to evacuate trapped girls.

Three people — one man and two women — lost their lives in the incident. Six others were safely rescued. Around 20 to 22 people from nine families were believed to be inside the building when the fire broke out late at night. Many were asleep at the time.

According to Delhi Police, the incident took place late on the night of January 2 near Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. Gupta, who had attended a party with a friend, reportedly asked a food delivery rider for water. What started as a minor exchange soon escalated into a violent argument.

Police said one delivery rider hit Gupta on the head with a helmet, following which two others joined in, kicking and punching him. Gupta collapsed unconscious on the road.
