BCCI has reportedly revised Bronco Test benchmarks and introduced stricter fitness rules to tackle injuries and improve player conditioning ahead of upcoming international assignments.

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly introduced stricter fitness standards for Indian cricketers in an effort to improve player conditioning and reduce recurring injuries. According to a report by The Times of India, the board has revised the benchmark for the Bronco fitness test, making it more challenging for players seeking selection in the national team.

Under the revised guidelines, players will now be required to complete the 1,200-metre Bronco Test within 5 minutes and 15 to 20 seconds, compared to the earlier benchmark of around six minutes. The board has also introduced a 2-kilometre running test, with players expected to finish the distance within 9 to 10 minutes. These new standards are expected to become the primary benchmarks for evaluating match fitness, replacing the Yo-Yo test that had been widely used over the past several years.

The changes have reportedly been recommended by the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru after concerns over increasing injury cases and declining fitness levels among players. Officials believe that maintaining higher physical standards will help reduce injuries and improve overall athletic performance across formats.

Along with the revised fitness tests, the BCCI has also established fresh baseline parameters aimed at improving coordination between the national team's medical staff, strength and conditioning experts and the Centre of Excellence. The objective is to ensure that fitness assessments are carried out more consistently before players are cleared for international duty.

According to the report, the board has reviewed several recent injury cases and concluded that fitness standards were not always enforced uniformly. Sources indicated that in some instances, players received clearance despite not being fully match fit. These concerns have prompted the BCCI to tighten its monitoring process and adopt a stricter approach going forward.

The report also referred to fast bowler Harshit Rana and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, whose fitness clearances reportedly became a subject of internal discussion. Harshit was sent back during India's England tour after concerns over his physical condition. Team officials reportedly believed his body weight was above the desired level. The Centre of Excellence has now set a target weight of under 96 kilograms, and reports suggest he has already reduced his weight to around 94 kilograms, bringing him closer to full fitness.

The BCCI has also reportedly sought explanations from the national team's medical department following repeated injury setbacks over the past year. Concerns have been raised after several players suffered muscle strains and cramps even while playing in favourable overseas conditions.

Sources indicate that the board has asked team physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain to immediately report any decline in a player's fitness regardless of seniority or reputation. The management is believed to have observed that some senior players have experienced reduced mobility on the field and have struggled while running between the wickets during long innings.

Kamlesh Jain has been serving as India's team physiotherapist since 2022, after succeeding Nitin Patel.

Another issue highlighted in the report is the coordination between the Centre of Excellence and the Indian team management. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was expected to recover in time for the opening Test against Sri Lanka, reportedly could not achieve the required fitness level within the projected timeline, leading to his absence from the series opener.

Some centrally contracted players were also reportedly surprised after being introduced to the revised fitness parameters shortly before the Sri Lanka tour. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, according to the report, encountered the updated Bronco and 2K running tests during his visit to the Centre of Excellence before the tour.

The board has now advised even players who are not part of the current Test squad to begin training according to the revised fitness benchmarks so that future assessments remain uniform across all formats.

While the stricter standards are intended to improve player fitness, experts have also cautioned against excessive physical workload. Reports suggest that players are now undergoing repeated Bronco, Yo-Yo and endurance tests more frequently than before. Sports science specialists believe that overtraining without adequate recovery can increase both physical fatigue and mental burnout, potentially raising the risk of injuries rather than preventing them.

During India's successful campaigns in the 2023 ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, player workload was reportedly managed more carefully, with fitness tests generally conducted only during injury rehabilitation or at scheduled intervals.

The revised policy signals the BCCI's intention to place greater emphasis on long-term fitness management as Indian cricket prepares for a packed international calendar over the coming years.

BCCI Weighs VVS Laxman as Ajit Agarkar's Successor: Report

Mumbai: The future of Ajit Agarkar as India's chief selector has reportedly become uncertain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said to be evaluating its options ahead of the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the recent controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement rumours has complicated Agarkar’s position, prompting fresh discussions within the board about the leadership of the national selection committee. Former India batter VVS Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), has reportedly emerged as a strong candidate for the role if the board decides to make a change.

Agarkar, who took charge as India's chief selector in July 2023, was initially expected to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. His original tenure ended in June this year, but the BCCI granted him a three-month extension, which expires next month. Until recently, an extension appeared to be a formality, particularly after India enjoyed remarkable success in ICC events during his tenure. However, recent developments have reportedly led the board to reassess the situation before taking a final decision.

According to the report, the episode involving Rohit Sharma's alleged retirement plans played a major role in changing the board's thinking. Speculation over Rohit's future had created widespread discussion before the senior batter silenced all doubts by scoring a century in the very next ODI against England. The conflicting narratives surrounding the incident reportedly did not go down well within sections of the BCCI, leading to questions about communication and selection management. While the board has not officially commented on the matter, the report claims that the incident has made Agarkar's continuation less certain than it appeared a few weeks ago.

Former India captain VVS Laxman is now reportedly being considered as a possible successor. Sources quoted in the report suggest that the discussions remain at a preliminary stage, with no final decision taken yet. The issue is expected to be formally discussed during the BCCI Annual General Meeting in September, where senior officials are likely to review the future of the national selection panel. The report further claims that several BCCI officials believe Laxman's experience and stature within Indian cricket would enable him to command greater influence in the dressing room and maintain stronger communication with senior players.

Laxman has been associated with several important roles in Indian cricket over the past few years. As the head of the Centre of Excellence, he oversees India's talent development pathway, including Under-19 programmes, coaching structures, sports science, and player education initiatives. He has also served as India's stand-in head coach during multiple overseas assignments whenever the senior coaching staff was unavailable. His extensive involvement with young cricketers and domestic talent has strengthened his reputation as one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket administration.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Agarkar's record as chief selector remains highly impressive. Since assuming office, India have reached four ICC white-ball finals and lifted three consecutive global trophies, including the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy, and 2026 T20 World Cup. These achievements have been viewed as one of the strongest phases for Indian limited-overs cricket. However, recent selection decisions have drawn criticism from sections of former players and experts, leading to increased scrutiny over the selection committee's functioning.

The report also states that Agarkar's immediate future could depend on the outcome of India's upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Although selection committees are generally evaluated over longer periods, the board is reportedly assessing the overall direction of the team before making a long-term decision. Agarkar is believed to be keen on continuing in the role through the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the report suggests that the BCCI has not given him any formal assurance regarding an extension.

This is not the first time VVS Laxman has been linked with a senior position in Indian cricket. After Rahul Dravid stepped down as India's head coach in 2024, Laxman was considered among the leading candidates before the BCCI eventually appointed Gautam Gambhir. More recently, reports also suggested that the board had explored the possibility of introducing a split-coaching model following India's disappointing home Test performances, with Laxman potentially taking charge of the red-ball team. Although those discussions did not materialise, his name has continued to feature prominently whenever senior leadership roles within Indian cricket are discussed.

Fast bowler Aaqib Nabi has earned his maiden call-up to the Indian Test squad after being named as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The series begins on August 15 in Galle, with Shubman Gill leading the Indian side.

The selection marks a major milestone for the 23-year-old pacer, who becomes the first cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir to be selected in India's Test squad. While Parvez Rasool and Umran Malik have previously represented India in limited-overs cricket, neither featured in the Test format.

Bumrah Ruled Out

Bumrah was ruled out of the Sri Lanka series after failing to recover fully from a knee injury. Reports suggest the BCCI and team management decided against rushing the premier fast bowler back into action, keeping his long-term workload and fitness in mind.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the squad change but did not specify the reason behind Bumrah's withdrawal or Nabi's inclusion.

Reward for Outstanding Domestic Form

Aaqib Nabi's selection follows an exceptional domestic season. The right-arm pacer claimed 60 wickets in 10 Ranji Trophy matches during the 2025-26 season, including seven five-wicket hauls, emerging as one of the country's leading red-ball bowlers.

Across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, Nabi has taken 104 wickets, underlining his consistency and ability to perform in longer-format cricket.

His performances proved crucial during the knockout stages, where he delivered match-winning spells against Madhya Pradesh in the quarter-finals, Bengal in the semi-finals and Karnataka in the final. His contributions helped Jammu & Kashmir lift their maiden Ranji Trophy title, making him one of the standout performers of the domestic season.

Strong India A Performance

Before receiving his maiden Test call-up, Nabi travelled with the India A team on its recent tour of Sri Lanka. He impressed selectors by taking six wickets in two first-class matches, further strengthening his claim for a place in the senior national squad.

India Eye Strong Start

India will begin the two-match Test series under the leadership of Shubman Gill, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. Wicketkeepers Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel have also been included in the squad.

The Sri Lanka series is expected to play an important role in India's World Test Championship campaign, particularly after the team's recent 0-2 home Test series defeat against South Africa.

For Aaqib Nabi, the opportunity represents the biggest moment of his career so far, with the young pacer set to make the transition from domestic cricket to the international stage.

Ajinkya Rahane Retires from All Forms of Cricket

Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a distinguished career featuring 85 Tests and over 5,000 Test runs.

Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career that spanned nearly two decades. The 38-year-old confirmed that he was stepping away from international cricket, domestic cricket and franchise competitions with immediate effect. Rahane's last competitive appearance came during the 2026 Indian Premier League, where he captained the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and scored 335 runs in 14 matches. Interestingly, the veteran batter had recently spoken about his desire to return to the Indian team, but has now decided to end a career that saw him become one of India's most dependable Test batters. Rahane leaves the game after representing India in 85 Tests, 90 One-Day Internationals and 20 T20 Internationals, earning a reputation as one of the country's finest performers in overseas conditions.

Rahane made his international debut in 2011 during a T20I against England and immediately caught attention with a blistering 69 off 31 balls while opening the innings. A few days later, he made his ODI debut against the same opposition, scoring a composed 40 off 44 deliveries. His Test debut came in 2013 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Delhi. Although he managed scores of just 1 and 7 in his first Test, it proved to be only a slow beginning. Over the next decade, Rahane established himself as the backbone of India's middle order, scoring 5,077 runs in 85 Tests. In One-Day Internationals, he accumulated 2,962 runs in 90 matches, while adding 375 runs in 20 T20Is. While he represented India across all three formats, it was Test cricket where Rahane built his legacy with calmness, resilience and consistency.

The Mumbai batter played a crucial role in India's transition after the retirement of senior legends, forming a reliable middle order alongside Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. His performances in overseas conditions became the hallmark of his career. Memorable centuries in New Zealand, England and Australia, particularly his hundred at Lord's in 2014, helped India register one of its most famous overseas Test victories. Rahane's ability to deliver under pressure in SENA countries earned him immense respect within the cricketing fraternity. His career, however, witnessed a challenging phase in its latter years. Following a lean run of form, he was dropped from the Test side before making a comeback for the 2023 World Test Championship Final, where he impressed with scores of 89 and 46. Despite the encouraging return, his second stint lasted only three Tests. His final appearance for India came against the West Indies in Port of Spain in July 2023. Even after moving out of the national setup, Rahane continued playing domestic and franchise cricket, leading KKR in IPL 2026 before finally deciding to call time on a career remembered for discipline, composure and some of India's most memorable overseas Test performances.

The franchise has appointed him as its Head of Cricket Strategy, where he will oversee long-term planning, player recruitment and talent development across KKR's global teams.

His appointment comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided not to extend the tenure of assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip, bringing their association with the Indian team to an end.

Jasprit Bumrah Injury: Sri Lanka Test Fitness Update

Jasprit Bumrah's Sri Lanka Test availability depends on CoE clearance as India assess whether his injured left knee can withstand a full Test workload.

India's upcoming two-Test tour of Sri Lanka has a major fitness question hanging over it, with Jasprit Bumrah yet to receive final clearance to play. Bumrah has been included in India's 15-member squad, but his availability will depend on an assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). The fast bowler suffered an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI against England in Cardiff. Reactive swelling developed afterwards, keeping him out of the series decider at Lord's. He was expected to rest until July 30 before reporting to the CoE for another examination. His selection for the Sri Lanka Tests suggests the team management remains hopeful about his recovery, but being named in the squad does not guarantee that he will take the field. For India, the real concern is whether Jasprit Bumrah's knee injury can handle the workload of Test cricket rather than simply whether he can bowl comfortably in a short net session.

The medical assessment is expected to focus heavily on workload. Bumrah will need to show that his knee can cope with repeated run-ups, longer bowling spells, fielding and the accumulated physical stress of a five-day Test. India have managed their premier fast bowler carefully in recent years because of his injury history, and the schedule leaves little room for a gradual return this time. India are due to play a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7, while the opening Test begins in Galle on August 15. The second Test is scheduled at the SSC in Colombo from August 23. That means Bumrah will have only a limited window after returning to the CoE to rebuild his bowling workload. His involvement in the practice match could therefore provide the clearest indication of whether he is ready for the first Test. If there is lingering discomfort or the medical team feels his knee is not ready for sustained bowling, India are unlikely to take a major risk with him. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar are the other specialist fast bowlers selected for the tour.

There is another fitness concern in India's squad, though this one is less clear. Sai Sudharsan has also been selected subject to fitness clearance, but the BCCI has not publicly disclosed the nature of his current problem. Sudharsan suffered an undisplaced fracture of his right seventh rib during the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this year and later completed rehabilitation, but that injury has not officially been identified as the reason behind his latest fitness condition. The uncertainty stands out because the left-hander recently showed strong red-ball form in Sri Lanka, including a 168-run innings for India A against Sri Lanka A in Galle. He will still need to meet the CoE's return-to-play requirements before being cleared. Shubman Gill will captain India on the tour, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal are part of the batting and wicketkeeping group, while Ravindra Jadeja returns to a spin attack featuring Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and uncapped off-spinner Saransh Jain. Washington Sundar is unavailable for the first Test. For now, however, the biggest selection call remains Bumrah. India have kept the door open for their leading pacer, but the final decision will come down to one thing: whether his knee is ready for the demands of Test cricket.

India Announce Test Squad for Sri Lanka Series: Saransh Jain Earns Maiden Call-Up, Ravindra Jadeja Returns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja returning after recovering from injury and Madhya Pradesh off-spinning all-rounder Saransh Jain receiving his maiden Test call-up. The series, beginning on August 15 in Galle, marks India's first overseas assignment in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle.

Shubman Gill will continue to lead the side, while KL Rahul has been named vice-captain. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant retains his place in the playing group alongside Dhruv Jurel, who has been selected as the second wicketkeeping option.

The biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Saransh Jain, whose consistent domestic performances and impressive showing for India A on the recent Sri Lanka tour earned him his first opportunity at the highest level. The 33-year-old all-rounder strengthened his case by scoring an unbeaten 70 and claiming six wickets during the unofficial four-day series, convincing the selectors that he could add balance to India's spin attack.

Jadeja also returns to the Test setup after missing recent international assignments because of a tennis elbow injury. His comeback provides India with an experienced left-arm spin option and additional batting depth in conditions expected to favour slow bowlers.

However, not every selection has been confirmed without conditions. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and batter Sai Sudharsan have both been included in the squad, but their participation remains subject to receiving fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence before the series begins. Bumrah is recovering from a knee issue sustained during the ODI series against England, while Sudharsan is also undergoing rehabilitation.

India have also been forced into changes because of injuries. All-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the first Test due to a hamstring injury, while Nitish Kumar Reddy has not been considered after failing to recover fully from a quadriceps injury. Their absence created an opportunity for Saransh Jain to enter the national squad.

The batting order is expected to retain its familiar structure, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal likely to open the innings. Captain Shubman Gill is set to continue at No. 4, while Pant remains India's first-choice wicketkeeper. Devdutt Padikkal has also retained his place in the squad as an additional batting option.

India's spin department appears particularly strong for Sri Lankan conditions. Alongside Jadeja, the selectors have backed Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Suthar, while Saransh Jain offers another off-spin option capable of contributing with the bat lower down the order. The combination gives India multiple tactical options depending on pitch conditions and player availability.

The pace attack will be led by Bumrah if declared fit, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna expected to shoulder the primary fast-bowling responsibilities. Gurnoor Brar, who impressed during recent India A assignments, has also been retained in the squad as additional seam-bowling cover.

Before the Test series begins, India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo starting August 7 to help the squad acclimatise to Sri Lankan conditions. The opening Test will be played in Galle from August 15, while the second and final Test is scheduled to begin in Colombo on August 23. Both matches carry valuable World Test Championship points as India look to improve their position early in the current cycle.

With experienced names returning, fresh faces earning opportunities and several fitness updates still to come, India's squad reflects a blend of continuity and transition as the team prepares for another crucial overseas challenge in Test cricket.

Cricket Australia Open to Hosting Australia-England Test in India as CEO Sees Huge Growth Potential

Cricket Australia (CA) has indicated that a future Test match between Australia and England could be staged in India, with Chief Executive Officer Todd Greenberg saying the idea remains a possibility as cricket continues to explore new commercial opportunities in the world's biggest market.

Speaking on the BBC's Stumped podcast, Greenberg said there are currently no formal plans to move an Ashes-related Test to India, but emphasised that cricket administrators should remain open to innovative ideas that can expand the global reach of the game.

According to Greenberg, India represents one of the most significant markets for international cricket, and there is growing scope to deliver premium cricket content outside the traditional bilateral calendar.

"We should consider every opportunity," Greenberg said, adding that Cricket Australia enjoys strong working relationships with both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He noted that any future discussions would depend on scheduling and the broader international calendar rather than commercial interest alone.

While stressing that no proposal has been finalised, Greenberg suggested that exhibition-style Test matches or special events in India could become viable in the years ahead if logistical challenges are resolved.

One of the biggest obstacles, however, remains the increasingly crowded international cricket calendar.

Greenberg acknowledged that fitting additional marquee fixtures into an already packed schedule is becoming increasingly difficult. He remarked that international cricket has reached a stage where the demand for elite contests exceeds the number of available playing days.

"There are only 365 days in a year," he said, noting that administrators would ideally want "another month or two" to accommodate the volume of cricket that boards and broadcasters would like to stage.

The comments come at a time when cricket boards across the world are searching for new revenue streams while balancing bilateral commitments, ICC tournaments and expanding domestic franchise leagues.

Cricket Australia has already taken a major step towards increasing its presence in India. The opening fixture of this year's Big Bash League (BBL) is scheduled to be played at Chennai's M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, marking the first time a BBL match will be staged on Indian soil.

The opening game will feature Melbourne Renegades against Perth Scorchers and is expected to serve as a test case for taking Australian domestic cricket to overseas markets.

Industry observers believe that if the initiative proves successful, it could encourage cricket boards to explore similar international exhibition events, including high-profile Test matches involving traditional rivals.

The financial importance of the Indian market has also become increasingly evident for other cricket boards.

The ECB's recent financial report highlighted that series involving India remain among its most commercially valuable international fixtures. Broadcasting revenues and sponsorship linked to India's tours contribute significantly to the board's financial stability.

Despite hosting both the men's and women's Ashes in 2027, the ECB has projected financial pressure in the coming years, underlining the growing importance of commercially attractive international contests.

Meanwhile, preparations continue for the next chapter of the historic Ashes rivalry.

Australia and England are scheduled to meet in England for the next Ashes series in 2027. Before that, the two teams will contest a special day-night Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 2027 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first-ever Test match.

The commemorative pink-ball fixture will not count towards the Ashes series but is expected to be one of the landmark events in international cricket.

Although the prospect of an Australia-England Test in India remains at an exploratory stage, Greenberg's comments reflect the changing landscape of global cricket, where commercial expansion, broadcast audiences and international partnerships are increasingly influencing how and where elite cricket is played.

The case dates back to 2009, when the second season of the IPL was shifted from India to South Africa due to security concerns arising from the Lok Sabha elections. With security forces deployed for election duties across the country, cricket administrators decided to move the tournament overseas, a decision that ultimately allowed the event to proceed without disruption.

However, the financial arrangements related to the relocation later came under scrutiny.

The Enforcement Directorate alleged that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had remitted approximately USD 49.8 million abroad for conducting the tournament in South Africa without obtaining prior approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), allegedly violating provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Following investigations, the ED issued show-cause notices in 2011 and later imposed penalties in 2018 on Lalit Modi, certain former BCCI office-bearers and others associated with the matter.

The penalties were challenged before the appellate tribunal functioning under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, commonly known as SAFEMA.

In its detailed order, the tribunal concluded that there was insufficient evidence to establish Lalit Modi's direct responsibility for the transactions in question.

According to the findings, no concrete material was produced to prove that Modi personally authorised or controlled the disputed remittances. The tribunal further observed that he was not in charge of all BCCI affairs and that the case against him lacked the evidentiary foundation required to sustain the penalty.

The order effectively cancels the financial penalty imposed on him by the ED in the matter.

The ruling is likely to attract considerable attention because of Lalit Modi's role in the creation and expansion of the IPL. Widely regarded as one of the architects of the tournament, Modi played a key role in transforming the league into one of the world's most commercially successful sporting competitions.

At the same time, his career has remained intertwined with multiple legal and administrative disputes since his departure from Indian cricket administration.

The IPL's move to South Africa in 2009 remains one of the most significant decisions in the league's history. Despite concerns over logistics and scheduling, the tournament was successfully conducted overseas. The season concluded with Deccan Chargers defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final to win their only IPL title.

Reacting to the latest decision, Lalit Modi maintained that he had always acted in the interests of Indian cricket and the IPL. He stated that he had not committed any personal wrongdoing and described the verdict as an affirmation that allegations must ultimately be judged on evidence and legal principles.

Legal observers note that the tribunal's ruling specifically addresses the FEMA-related penalty and does not automatically determine the outcome of any separate proceedings that may have been examined independently by investigative agencies.

The Enforcement Directorate has not publicly commented on the tribunal's findings so far. It remains unclear whether the agency will seek further legal remedies or challenge the order before a higher judicial forum.

For now, the verdict represents a notable victory for Lalit Modi in a case that has remained active for more than a decade and has frequently resurfaced in discussions surrounding the governance, finances and global expansion of the IPL.

Kapil Dev Says No Place Is Permanent in Team India, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Must Earn Their Spot Through Performance

Former India captain Kapil Dev has said that no cricketer, regardless of reputation or achievements, should be considered a permanent member of the national team. The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper stressed that continued selection must depend on performance, a remark that comes amid ongoing discussions around the future of senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Speaking on the importance of merit-based selection, Kapil said players should continue to represent India as long as they are contributing consistently and helping the team win matches. His comments underline a long-standing principle in international cricket — form and fitness remain the ultimate criteria for selection.

The former all-rounder acknowledged the immense value that Rohit and Kohli bring to the side through their experience and match-winning ability. However, he maintained that even the most accomplished players cannot be guaranteed a place in the playing XI indefinitely.

According to Kapil, Indian cricket has always thrived when competition for places remains strong. He said senior players deserve opportunities as long as they justify their selection through performances, but team management must simultaneously prepare the next generation to ensure a smooth transition whenever change becomes necessary.

The remarks come at a time when Indian cricket is balancing experience with youth across formats. Several emerging players have impressed in domestic cricket and international opportunities, increasing competition for places in the national setup.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain among the most influential figures in Indian cricket. Both players announced their retirement from T20 Internationals after India’s triumphant campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Since then, they have continued to represent the country in One-Day Internationals and Test cricket.

Despite stepping away from the shortest format, the duo continues to play a crucial role in India's plans for major tournaments and bilateral series. Their experience has often been viewed as a key factor in guiding younger players through high-pressure situations.

Kapil's comments also highlight a broader challenge faced by every successful cricket team — balancing established stars with future prospects. While experienced players provide stability and leadership, selectors must also identify and nurture replacements before transitions become unavoidable.

Indian cricket has witnessed several such transitions over the decades. From the retirement of legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev himself to later generations led by Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni, the team has repeatedly evolved while maintaining competitiveness at the highest level.

The debate surrounding senior players often intensifies ahead of major tournaments, particularly when younger cricketers begin pushing for opportunities. However, Kapil suggested that performance should remain the only benchmark rather than age or reputation.

His remarks are likely to resonate with selectors and cricket followers alike, especially at a time when India is building squads for future global events. The message was clear: past achievements earn respect, but continued selection must be driven by present-day performances.

For Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom remain among the most accomplished batters in modern cricket, the focus continues to be on delivering results whenever they take the field. As long as those performances continue, Kapil believes their place in the team remains justified.

BCCI Denies Rohit Sharma Retirement Rumours Ahead of Lord's ODI Decider

Speculation that Rohit Sharma was about to walk away from international cricket reached fever pitch this week — and the BCCI has now stepped in to shut it down, at least officially.

Ahead of the series-deciding third ODI against England at Lord's on Sunday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly dismissed reports suggesting the match would be Sharma's farewell appearance in Indian colours. Speaking to PTI, Saikia said there had been no discussion within the board about Sharma playing his last match at Lord's, and reiterated that the veteran batter remains a regular member of India's ODI setup, adding that he would continue representing the country as long as he remained part of the team's plans.

The denial comes against a backdrop of persistent reporting pointing the other way. Multiple outlets have cited sources suggesting the national selectors have already shifted their long-term focus toward the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal being lined up for an extended run in the side. According to some reports, selectors are said to have communicated to Sharma that he isn't part of their plans beyond the current England tour, even as the 39-year-old has reportedly expressed his own desire to continue and invested heavily in his fitness — with the final call on his future left to him. Reports also suggested that discussions about his ODI future had begun as early as this year's IPL, in conversations between chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Sharma's recent form has done little to quiet the speculation. He managed just 11 off 21 balls in the series opener at Edgbaston, before a slow 26 off 47 at Cardiff, surviving a couple of half-chances along the way. Team management has publicly backed him regardless — batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said ahead of the Lord's match that he expected a "completely different" innings from the veteran, and reports of his parents having arrived in London ahead of the match only added further fuel to farewell speculation, whether or not that reading was accurate.

Sharma's ODI captaincy was already handed over to Shubman Gill last year, a move widely read at the time as the start of a generational transition. He retired from Test cricket in 2025 and from T20Is even earlier, meaning ODIs remain his only format of active international cricket regardless of how Sunday's match unfolds.

For now, the BCCI's position is unambiguous even if the underlying selection conversation remains murky: officially, Lord's is just another ODI for Rohit Sharma — not a farewell.
