The penalty comes despite Delhi Capitals securing a hard-fought victory in the match, highlighting the strict enforcement of playing conditions in this season of the Indian Premier League. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on over-rate management in T20 cricket, where time discipline is considered as important as on-field performance.

Match Overview

The match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings was played under high-pressure conditions, with both teams fighting for crucial points in the IPL 2026 standings. Delhi Capitals, led by Axar Patel, managed to put up a competitive performance and eventually secured a narrow win.

However, while the on-field performance was praised, the post-match review revealed that Delhi Capitals failed to complete their overs within the allocated time. This violation triggered an official review by match referees and the BCCI.

What Went Wrong?

According to match officials, Delhi Capitals were behind schedule during multiple phases of the innings. Strategic discussions, frequent field adjustments, and bowling changes contributed to delays in completing overs on time.

Although such tactics are common in high-pressure matches, IPL rules strictly require teams to maintain a minimum over-rate. Any delay beyond the permissible limit results in penalties, regardless of match outcome. The umpires reported the violation immediately after the match, which led to disciplinary action being taken against the captain.

Responsibility of Axar Patel

As per IPL regulations, the team captain is held directly responsible for maintaining the required over-rate. Axar Patel, who is leading Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, was held accountable for the delay. Despite being a relatively new captain in the franchise setup, Axar has been praised for his calm leadership and tactical awareness. However, this incident highlights the challenges captains face in balancing strategy with time management.

The ₹12 lakh fine has been imposed under the Level 1 offence category of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minor breaches such as slow over-rates.

BCCI Rules and Penalty System

The BCCI has a well-defined Code of Conduct for IPL teams, particularly concerning over-rate violations. According to the rules:

Teams must complete their innings within a specified time limit

Captains are responsible for ensuring compliance

First-time offences usually result in monetary fines

Repeated violations can lead to harsher penalties, including suspension

Axar Patel’s case falls under a financial penalty, but repeated offences could have serious consequences for both the player and the team.

Delhi Capitals’ Response

Following the announcement of the fine, Delhi Capitals management acknowledged the issue. The franchise stated that certain in-game situations contributed to the delay, including tactical meetings and bowling adjustments under pressure.

The team has assured that they will review their time management strategies moving forward to ensure that such violations do not occur again in future matches. A senior team official mentioned that while winning matches is important, maintaining discipline within IPL regulations is equally crucial for long-term success.

Impact on the Season

Although the fine does not affect Delhi Capitals’ points in the IPL 2026 table, it serves as a warning for the team going forward. With the tournament entering a crucial phase, every match is significant for playoff qualification.

Experts believe that such penalties, while financial in nature, create added pressure on captains and coaching staff to ensure faster decision-making during matches. Cricket analysts also point out that modern T20 cricket demands not only aggressive gameplay but also strict adherence to time-based rules.

IPL 2026 Strict Approach

The IPL 2026 season has seen a noticeably stricter approach from the BCCI regarding match discipline. Several teams and captains across franchises have already been fined for similar over-rate violations. This reflects the governing body’s intention to maintain the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket and ensure that matches conclude within scheduled timeframes, especially considering global broadcasting commitments.

Notices served but no violation yet

Indian cricketers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shafali Verma have been served official “missed test” notices by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The agency issued the notices after both players were reportedly not available at their declared locations for out-of-competition dope tests.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also been informed. Both cricketers are part of NADA’s Registered Testing Pool (RTP), which requires them to regularly update their whereabouts for surprise sample collection.

At this stage, this is not an anti-doping violation. But the development has drawn attention because repeated failures can lead to disciplinary action under NADA’s code.

What happened with Jaiswal and Shafali?

According to a India Today report, NADA officials attempted to test Jaiswal on December 17 last year. Shafali’s scheduled test was on November 7. On both occasions, the players were not found at the locations they had submitted to the agency.

NADA later asked both to explain the situation. Jaiswal reportedly received the communication on February 18, while Shafali got hers on February 20. No response came within the given time, so the agency recorded their first missed tests.

Under NADA rules, athletes in the RTP must provide a specific time slot and exact location where a Doping Control Officer can reach them for surprise testing — even during off-season or personal breaks.

Three failures within a year can bring suspension

A single missed test does not automatically mean a rule violation. But three whereabouts failures within 12 months can be treated as an anti-doping violation. If a player fails to defend themselves before NADA’s hearing panel, they could face a suspension of up to two years.

The system is designed to ensure athletes remain available for random testing at all times — outside tournaments, training camps, or personal travel.

Crucial time for both cricketers

The notices have come at an important stage in their careers. Jaiswal is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. The team is still fighting for a playoff spot, and any distraction is unwelcome.

Shafali remains a key part of India Women’s plans ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales, starting June 12. Missing tests at this stage, even procedural ones, adds unwanted attention.

A reminder of past doping cases

The incident has reminded many of Prithvi Shaw’s 2019 case. The former India opener received an eight-month suspension after testing positive for Terbutaline, a banned substance found in cough syrup. The BCCI had then clarified Shaw consumed it unintentionally.

Unlike that case, the current notices to Jaiswal and Shafali are only about missed tests — not failed samples. Still, the warnings underline how seriously NADA enforces compliance for modern athletes. Both players now have a chance to respond or update their whereabouts more carefully to avoid further notices.

BCCI Cracks Down on Reel Culture in IPL Amid Corruption Risks

Players, families warned against social media posts as board tightens anti-corruption rules

Broadcasters Face Heat Over Stadium Videos

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ramped up its anti-corruption drive during IPL 2026, zeroing in on social media excesses and unauthorized filming around teams. Officials are particularly alarmed by the "reel culture" sweeping franchises, with vloggers and influencers gaining too much access to players and sensitive areas.

Just hours into the season, several former cricketers doubling as commentators drew warnings for shooting videos near the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA)—a strict no-go zone. One incident stood out late last evening at a packed Mumbai stadium, where an ex-international was spotted filming on his phone right by the dugout during a nail-biting chase.

BCCI sources confirmed the anti-corruption team intervened immediately, halting the recording. "There could even be legal notices if it repeats," one official noted, adding that anyone in official BCCI or IPL gear is barred from such activity. Broadcasters had received clear guidelines ahead of the tournament, yet these slips happened.

Influencer Access Sparks Security Worries

The board's concerns run deeper into franchise practices. Franchises have been letting social media influencers roam team spaces unchecked, from dressing rooms to travel buses. This has led to breaches, like an Indian fast bowler's wife posting a video exposing team hotel details earlier this week.

"Reel culture has led to many violations of late," a BCCI source told reporters. Players themselves are under the scanner for match-day posts—videos just before tosses or right after stumps. The fear? Proximity to outsiders could open doors to "honey traps" or leaks that compromise match integrity.

Lucknow Super Giants' recent event with influencer Shefali Bagga highlighted the issue, with photos circulating freely online. Officials worry this sets a risky precedent, blurring lines between entertainment and security.

Family, Friends Barred from Team Zones

Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) officers are now a fixture at team hotels and venues, monitoring not just IPL but state T20 leagues too. Senior players have been pulled up for letting family or friends hitch rides on team buses or sneak into restricted spots.

Initial reports indicate a few IPL stars repeated these lapses in domestic tournaments, sending the wrong signal to youngsters eyeing the big league. "These are poor examples for young cricketers who make it to the IPL through these leagues," the source added.

BCCI has held sessions with players, officials, and owners, hammering home the rules. No unauthorized guests in hotels, no filming in PMOA, and definitely no oversharing online.

Extending Rules to Domestic Leagues

The crackdown isn't limited to IPL glitz. ACU presence is now standard in state association T20s, where domestic talent feeds into the IPL pipeline. Hotels in cities like those hosting Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches are under watch.

This comes amid broader integrity fears—spot-fixing shadows from past scandals still linger. By curbing reel-driven indiscipline, BCCI aims to safeguard the league's credibility.

Players Urged to Refrain from Posts

Players and families got direct memos: dial back the content. No videos of team routines, accommodations, or match prep. The message is clear—focus on cricket, not cameras.

Franchises face pressure to vet influencers strictly. One team already dialed back access after a warning.

Tighter Grip for Season Ahead

As IPL 2026 heats up, expect more spot checks. BCCI's moves signal zero tolerance, especially with playoffs looming. Sources hint at fines or bans for repeat offenders.

The board hopes this reins in the influencer frenzy without stifling the league's fan appeal. For now, players are adapting—posting less, playing more.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium after the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) demanded thousands of complimentary tickets beyond the permitted quota, including allocations for local MLAs.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision on Friday while also announcing stricter measures against unauthorised persons travelling with teams. The developments come amid growing concerns over player conduct and security risks during the ongoing tournament.

Ticket row forces venue change

Saikia told reporters that the BCCI follows a standard protocol under which host associations receive 15 percent of the stadium’s seating capacity as complimentary tickets. KSCA, however, sought a significantly higher number, including extra tickets for members, affiliated clubs, and notably, 700 tickets for the Karnataka government and local legislators.

“Over and above the 15% complimentary ticket quota, they were demanding approximately 10,000 additional tickets,” Saikia said. He described the demands as “frivolous” and stated that the BCCI, as the host body for playoffs and final, could not violate its own rules. The shift to Narendra Modi Stadium was therefore unavoidable.

The announcement came a day after the BCCI unveiled the playoff schedule, leaving many Bengaluru fans disappointed. Chinnaswamy Stadium, known for its electric atmosphere, has hosted several high-profile IPL matches, but logistical and protocol issues prevailed this time.

Unauthorised persons in team buses flagged

In parallel, the BCCI is tightening oversight on team movements. Saikia revealed that the board has noticed “irregularities” involving unauthorised individuals, including on team buses and inside team hotels.

“We will issue an advisory to all franchises and players. There are certain protocols in place, and if anyone fails to follow them, the BCCI will take appropriate action,” he told IANS. Reports suggest some players were seen travelling with rumoured partners, prompting the board’s intervention.

Honey-trap risks prompt fresh alert

The board has gone further by issuing a detailed seven-page guideline warning franchises about honey-trapping risks in high-profile sporting events. The communication, sent on Thursday evening, highlights the potential for serious legal allegations, including those related to sexual misconduct.

“The BCCI draws the attention of all Franchises to the well-documented risks of targeted compromise and honey-trapping,” the guideline stated. Franchise management has been asked to remain “vigilant and proactive” in mitigating such threats.

Background and protocol clarity

Host associations usually enjoy certain privileges during major IPL events, but the 15 percent cap on complimentary tickets is a long-standing norm intended to balance stakeholder interests and maintain transparency. Saikia emphasised that all state units follow the same guideline, making KSCA’s request stand out.

The decision to relocate the final underscores the BCCI’s insistence on adhering to protocols, especially for the showpiece matches that draw massive global viewership and revenue.

Impact on fans and franchises

For Bengaluru cricket enthusiasts, the shift represents a significant letdown. The city had prepared to host the climax of what has been another commercially successful IPL season. Tickets for the final are expected to be in high demand in Ahmedabad, which has successfully hosted previous high-stakes matches at the world-class Narendra Modi Stadium.

Franchises have been put on notice. The combination of conduct-related advisories and venue-related decisions signals a firmer stance from the apex body as the tournament enters its business end. Players and support staff are likely to face stricter checks on guest access and travel arrangements in the coming days.

What lies ahead

The BCCI is expected to issue the formal advisory to all ten franchises shortly. Officials indicated that repeated violations could invite penalties, though specific sanctions have not yet been detailed. The focus remains on ensuring the integrity and smooth conduct of the league while protecting players from external risks.

The final at Narendra Modi Stadium is now set to be the season’s grand finale, with the exact date and time already communicated as part of the playoff schedule.

IPL 2026 Final Hangs in Balance as Bengaluru’s MLA Ticket Row Spills onto Cricket Pitch

Venue Uncertainty Deepens

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to formalise the schedule for the IPL 2026 playoffs, and behind the delay is a controversy that has little to do with cricket. A dispute over MLA ticket allocations for matches at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium has thrown the venue for the 31 May final into serious doubt.

Traditionally, the defending champions host the summit clash. But ground-level friction in Karnataka’s political corridors now threatens to push the marquee game out of the city.

‘MLAs Should Get at Least 5 Tickets’

The flashpoint occurred earlier this week when Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar publicly argued that legislators are “VIPs” who should receive at least five IPL tickets each and not be made to wait in regular queues. His remarks opened a wider debate on privilege and access during a high-demand cricket season.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar quickly stepped in to calibrate expectations. He confirmed that MLAs and MPs would be given three tickets each for RCB matches. His cabinet colleague, Home Minister G. Parameshwara, added a critical layer: those tickets, purchased online, are strictly non-transferable and meant only for legislators and their immediate family members.

Playoffs Likely Split Between Two States

According to a BCCI source, the IPL 2026 playoffs are set to be shared between last season’s finalists — Karnataka and Punjab. However, the MLA ticket issue has become an operational headache.

“IPL 2026 playoffs and final venue will be announced soon. Matches likely to be divided between Punjab and Karnataka. The last time’s winner should host the final, but the MLA ticket issue is creating problems in Bengaluru. If there is no solution, BCCI will move the final to another city,” the source told ANI.

That admission has shifted conversations behind closed doors. Officials are now quietly assessing alternative venues.

Not the First Time a Final Has Moved

If Bengaluru loses the final, it will not be unprecedented. In IPL 2025, the summit clash was supposed to be held in Kolkata — home of then-defending champions KKR. Instead, the BCCI moved it to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, citing the early onset of the southwest monsoon in West Bengal.

That decision had drawn sharp criticism from West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, who alleged political reasons behind the shift. The current situation in Bengaluru, while different in nature, carries similar echoes of last-minute disruption.

Ground Reality and Public Reaction

Inside Chinnaswamy Stadium, preparations for a potential final have been put on hold. Local cricket fans expressed disappointment, with many arguing that a political dispute should not cost the city a marquee event. “We waited years for RCB to win the title. Now this?” said a regular match attendee outside the stadium on Thursday morning.

Shivakumar’s office has not issued further comment since clarifying the three-ticket norm. But pressure is mounting on the state administration to resolve the impasse quickly. The BCCI, known for its preference for smooth operational clarity, is unlikely to wait indefinitely.

Playoff Race Still Wide Open

On the field, the uncertainty over the final’s location has not dimmed the contest. As of match 47, no team has been mathematically eliminated. Punjab Kings lead the table with 13 points, followed by defending champions RCB, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals — all on 12 points.

At the bottom, KKR (7 points), Mumbai Indians (6), and Lucknow Super Giants (4) face an uphill climb. Mid-table sides — Gujarat Titans (12), Chennai Super Kings (8), and Delhi Capitals (8) — remain very much in the mix.

What Happens Next

For now, the BCCI has kept its official announcement on hold. A final decision is expected within the next 48 to 72 hours. If Bengaluru fails to provide clear assurances on the ticket dispute, the IPL trophy lift could well take place in Punjab — or a neutral venue.

With barely weeks left for the playoffs, cricket administrators find themselves navigating political egos as much as net run rates. And for fans in Bengaluru, a home final is starting to feel like a lost ball.

Kal Somani group cries foul over transparency as Mittal, Poonawalla seal Rajasthan Royals sale controversy for ₹15,600 crore

New Delhi, May 5: A bitter dispute has surfaced over the high-stakes sale of IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals, with the Kal Somani-led consortium accusing the process of lacking transparency and fairness.

The US-based group, which included executives from Walmart and Ford, issued a strongly worded statement late Tuesday, expressing "deep disappointment" after losing out to a powerhouse bid from industrialist Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, his son Aditya Mittal, and Serum Institute's Adar Poonawalla. The winners acquired a 93% stake in the Pink City outfit for around ₹15,600 crore ($1.65 billion), marking one of the priciest deals in IPL history.

Somani's Bid Led for Months

Sources close to the matter said the Somani consortium had been frontrunners for six months, maintaining a strong $1.63 billion offer right till the end. They insisted they never withdrew and were fully funded to close the deal promptly. "We were the lead bid from start to finish," their statement noted, questioning why their preparedness didn't sway the outcome.

Media buzz earlier suggested the group had pulled out, but Somani dismissed those reports as misinformation. The consortium, backed by heavyweights from global retail and automotive giants, argued the process fell short on "transparency, consistency, integrity and good faith."

Mittal-Poonawalla Take 93% Stake

The deal, finalized recently, hands the Mittal family about 75% ownership, with Poonawalla holding 18%. The remaining 7% stays with existing investor Manoj Badale and associates. A revamped board now features Lakshmi Mittal, Aditya Mittal, Vanisha Mittal-Bhatia, Poonawalla, and Badale.

This infusion of corporate muscle comes at a time when IPL valuations are soaring ahead of the 2026 auction cycle. Rajasthan Royals, known for their Jaipur base and pink jerseys, now rank among the league's most valuable assets.

Existing Owners Cite Documentation Issues

Insiders familiar with the Rajasthan Royals sale controversy revealed that current owners flagged technical lapses in Somani's paperwork. "There were deficiencies that didn't meet the required standards," one source said, prompting the shift to the Mittal group's cleaner bid.

Somani rejected this outright, terming it an "attempt to tarnish our image." Officials from the franchise and IPL governing council have stayed tight-lipped so far, with no formal response to the allegations as of late evening Tuesday.

Royals' Rollercoaster IPL Journey

The franchise boasts a storied past. Under Shane Warne's leadership, they clinched the inaugural IPL title in 2008, stunning favorites with a bootstrapped squad. But glory faded; they reached the final only once since, losing to Gujarat Titans in 2022.

A major setback hit in 2015 with a spot-fixing scandal. Co-owner Raj Kundra was implicated in betting by the Lodha Committee, leading to a two-year ban. Royals and Chennai Super Kings sat out 2016-17 seasons before staging a comeback in 2018.

Questions Linger on Auction Fairness

The row raises fresh scrutiny on how IPL stakes change hands in these mega-deals. Fans and analysts wonder if regulatory oversight needs tightening for such sums. Somani's public airing could invite questions from the BCCI, though no probe has been announced.

For now, the new owners eye bolstering the squad for IPL 2026, where Royals aim to reclaim past highs. The Rajasthan Royals sale controversy, however, simmers, potentially casting a shadow over the transition.

Gwalior's rising cricket star to lead India-A in three T20 matches against England-A; has previously led Madhya Pradesh to senior ODI Trophy glory

A Big Leap for Gwalior's Own
Anushka Sharma, the all-rounder from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, has been handed one of the most significant assignments of her young career. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named her captain of the India-A women's T20 side for the upcoming England tour, where she will lead the team in a three-match series against England-A.
The announcement, made recently, has been widely seen as a reward for consistent domestic performances and her growing reputation as a match-winner in multiple formats.

Series Schedule and Venues
The three T20 matches are scheduled across two English venues. The first two games will be held in Northampton on June 20 and June 23, while the third and final match moves to Chelmsford on June 25.
A separate ODI series, running from June 28 to July 4 at Hove and Taunton, will be led by Harleen Deol, with Pratika Rawal named as her deputy. Vrinda Dinesh has been appointed vice-captain for the T20 leg under Anushka.

"Will Give My Best," Says Anushka
Speaking about the opportunity, Anushka Sharma kept it simple and grounded. "Playing for the country is every cricketer's dream. Leading the team as captain is a matter of great pride for me. I will try my best to give everything for my team," she said.

Senior Debut Already Under Her Belt
Anushka made her senior India debut during the South Africa tour, where she featured in three matches and showed enough to convince selectors of her readiness for bigger responsibilities. Her ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made her a versatile asset in Indian women's cricket.
Earlier in the Women's Premier League 2026, she turned heads playing for Gujarat Giants — scoring 44 runs off just 30 balls in a high-pressure outing, underlining the aggressive batting that has become her signature.

Decorated Domestic Record
Before the India-A captaincy came calling, Anushka had already built an impressive resume at the domestic level. She has served as vice-captain of the Madhya Pradesh senior women's team and previously captained the India B side in the Under-19 Challenger Trophy. Under her leadership, Madhya Pradesh's U-19 team finished national runners-up.
Her most celebrated achievement remains the 2024-25 Senior Women's ODI Trophy, where she played a key role in MP's title-winning campaign. She walked away from the tournament with the Player of the Tournament award along with several other individual honours that season.
The Chandra Nayudu Award, given to recognise outstanding domestic women cricketers, is also among her recognitions.

Bundlekhand Bulls Back Her Too
Closer to home, Anushka was retained as captain of Bundlekhand Bulls for the second season of the Madhya Pradesh Women's League, to be held in Indore. In the first edition, she was vice-captain and played a crucial part in the team's title win. Her elevation to full captaincy for the second season reflects the confidence the franchise places in her leadership abilities.

What Comes Next
With the T20 World Cup 2026 scheduled in England from June 12 — India opening their campaign against Pakistan on June 14 — the India-A tour serves as important preparation ground. Players performing well in these matches could catch the selectors' eye for future senior assignments.
For Anushka Sharma, the England tour is not just another series. It is the clearest signal yet that Indian women's cricket sees a future leader in her.

Prime Minister virtually launches modern indoor facilities across six northeastern states, giving a major push to year-round cricket training in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday virtually inaugurated six state-of-the-art indoor cricket academies developed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) across the Northeast, marking a significant boost to the region's emerging cricket ecosystem.

The event took place as Modi was in Gangtok, Sikkim, where he was on an official visit. From there, he formally opened the facilities located in Rangpo (Sikkim), Doimukh (Arunachal Pradesh), Imphal (Manipur), Madankurklang (Meghalaya), Aizawl (Mizoram), and Dimapur (Nagaland). Senior BCCI officials and ICC Chairman Jay Shah attended the ceremony, with state cricket administrators joining through video link.

Major Infrastructure Push

These academies come as part of the BCCI’s sustained effort to strengthen cricket infrastructure in the Northeast, a region long affected by challenging weather conditions, particularly heavy monsoons that disrupt outdoor training for months. Officials familiar with the project said the indoor facilities will allow players to train throughout the year without having to travel outside their states.

In Manipur, the new academy at Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium in Luwangsangbam, Imphal, has drawn particular attention. Funded by the BCCI, the facility includes three indoor practice pitches, a gymnasium, an administrative office, and temperature-controlled swimming pools. Manipur Cricket Association secretary Lairenjam Geetranjan Singh called it a “historic moment” for cricket in the state. He thanked Jay Shah for his support during his earlier tenure as BCCI Secretary and noted that the Board will handle maintenance and operational costs for the next two years.

Year-Round Training Benefits

Speaking about the practical impact, Singh highlighted how the indoor setup will help local players, especially during the rainy season. Training camps and coaching sessions can now continue uninterrupted. He also pointed to Manipur’s recent domestic success — reaching finals in five BCCI tournaments in the 2025 season and winning two Under-19 titles — as a sign of growing talent that these facilities can further nurture.

Similar benefits are expected in the other states. The BCCI has positioned these academies as high-performance centres that will provide better access to quality training for young cricketers across the region. Sources in the board indicated the project was conceptualised under Jay Shah’s leadership as BCCI Secretary, with foundation stones laid in May 2024.

PM’s Emphasis on Sports Talent

During the virtual inauguration, Prime Minister Modi underscored the role of such infrastructure in tapping into the sporting potential of the Northeast. He said these facilities would help nurture local talent and create stronger opportunities for young players, contributing to a more vibrant sports culture in the area.

Later in the day, Modi shared a lighter moment from his Gangtok visit. He posted on X a video of himself playing football with youngsters on a pleasant morning. “Nothing like playing some football with my young friends in Sikkim on a lovely Gangtok morning!” he wrote, drawing warm reactions online. The visuals showed the Prime Minister engaging playfully with the children, highlighting his personal connect with sports and youth.

Building a Regional Cricket Ecosystem

The inauguration of these six academies is being seen as a step towards building a more cohesive cricket ecosystem in the Northeast. For years, talented players from these states have often faced limitations due to inadequate facilities and seasonal disruptions. The new indoor infrastructure aims to bridge that gap by offering modern, weather-proof training environments.

BCCI office-bearers, including President Mithun Manhas, Secretary Devajit Saikia, and others, were present during the event, reflecting the board’s commitment to grassroots development beyond traditional cricket strongholds.

Cricket administrators in the Northeast have welcomed the development, viewing it as validation of the growing interest and potential in the region. With better facilities now in place, expectations are rising for improved performances in domestic tournaments and, eventually, greater representation at higher levels.

As one official noted, consistent training is key to producing quality players. These academies could prove crucial in that journey, especially for states where outdoor grounds often remain waterlogged for extended periods.

The BCCI is expected to monitor the utilisation of these facilities closely in the coming months. While the board will support operations initially, long-term success will depend on how effectively state associations integrate them into their talent development programmes.

For the young cricketers of the Northeast, Tuesday’s development brings tangible hope — the chance to train seriously, stay competitive, and dream bigger without the usual constraints of geography and weather.

Riyan Parag Caught Vaping in IPL Dressing Room

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag vaping controversy erupts during Punjab Kings match, reigniting e-cig ban debate amid past star cricketer incidents.

Riyan Parag, captain of Rajasthan Royals, is facing backlash after a video captured him allegedly vaping an e-cigarette in the dressing room during Tuesday's IPL 2026 match against Punjab Kings in Jaipur. The clip, from the 16th over of RR's batting innings, shows Parag in the presence of teammates Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal. It quickly went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism for flouting India's e-cigarette ban.

Viral Clip Sparks Outrage

The footage aired briefly on live broadcast before cutting away, but not before social media users shared it widely. Fans and former players called it a poor example from a team leader. "This isn't just about rules—it's about setting standards for young fans," one ex-cricketer posted online. The incident comes just days after RR manager Romi Bhinder was fined for using a mobile phone in the dressing room near young prospect Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

E-Cigs Banned Since 2019

India outlawed the production, sale, import, and advertising of e-cigarettes under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA) 2019. Violations carry jail time and hefty fines. Officials note vaping poses serious health risks, especially for athletes, with unknown chemicals in devices lacking safety clearance. Parag's public use in a high-profile setting has amplified calls for stricter enforcement in sports.

BCCI Seeks Response

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has been approached for comment, sources familiar with the matter said. The board is expected to demand explanations from Parag and the franchise soon. "They take player conduct seriously, particularly with laws involved," a senior official remarked. IPL guidelines already prohibit such items in team areas, and penalties could range from fines to suspension.

Past Stars in Similar Spots

This isn't the first time IPL cameras have caught top players. Back in 2020, ex-Australia captain Aaron Finch was spotted vaping during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's clash with Rajasthan Royals. The clip showed him exhaling smoke mid-over before the feed switched back to action, sparking a brief storm online.

De Villiers' SA20 Moment

AB de Villiers faced heat more recently in South Africa's SA20 league. Sitting in the VIP stands, the former South Africa star was filmed vaping, with the image flashing on the stadium big screen. Social media buzzed, though he brushed it off lightly.

Smoking Rows Beyond Vapes

Traditional smoking incidents have also rocked cricket. Brendon McCullum once admitted puffing cigarettes in a stadium toilet during New Zealand's 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final against South Africa. England's Ben Stokes drew ire for lighting up in Lord's washroom ahead of the 2019 World Cup final versus New Zealand.

Rabada's Hotel Balcony Clip

Gujarat Titans' Kagiso Rabada hit headlines earlier when a video surfaced of him smoking a cigarette from a hotel balcony during IPL. Unlike others, it wasn't inside stadium premises, but it still fueled debates on player discipline.

The Parag episode underscores ongoing tensions between personal habits and public scrutiny in elite cricket. With IPL 2026 in full swing, eyes are on BCCI's next move—fines, warnings, or tougher measures. Franchises may tighten dressing room protocols amid rising fan expectations. For now, Parag continues to lead RR, but the cloud lingers.

Cricket Fraternity Pays Tribute

The ‘God of Cricket’ celebrated his 53rd birthday on Thursday as tributes poured in from across the globe. Born on 24 April 1973 in Mumbai, Sachin Tendulkar received heartfelt wishes from the BCCI, former teammates, and his son Arjun. The cricket fraternity unanimously hailed the highest run-scorer in the sport’s history.

BCCI Shares Stellar Career Stats

The Board of Control for Cricket in India led the tributes by sharing Tendulkar’s monumental career numbers. The board’s post highlighted his 34,357 international runs and record 100 centuries. Officials described him as the most complete batter of his generation. The post quickly went viral across social media platforms.

Arjun Tendulkar’s Playful Diet Jab

Lucknow Super Giants all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar wished his father with a light-hearted video. Pointing at a birthday cake, the younger Tendulkar joked about avoiding sugar. “Happy Birthday. But I'm not going to eat this because I don't have sugar very often,” he said. The clip ended with a promise: “I'll see you soon.”

Yuvraj, Harbhajan Recall Golden Days

Former teammates shared emotional memories of sharing the dressing room with Tendulkar. Yuvraj Singh called it an honour to have taken the field alongside the Master Blaster. Harbhajan Singh simply wrote, “Happy Birthday Paaji!” veteran spinner Irfan Pathan stated, “When you say GOAT, I hear Sachin Tendulkar.”

IPL Franchises Join Celebrations

Mumbai Indians, Tendulkar’s former IPL team, called him “the little boy who became every cricket lover’s heartbeat.” Royal Challengers Bengaluru added that every generation found its hero in one name. Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders also extended warm wishes, referring to him as the ‘God of Cricket’.

Jay Shah, Govt Bodies Hail Icon’s Humanity

BCCI secretary Jay Shah praised Tendulkar’s impact beyond the boundary lines. “Your empathy and humanity has a significant impact on society,” Shah wrote. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting joined in, celebrating “the greatest batsman of all time.” Wasim Jaffer said he felt honoured to have played alongside the legend.

A Legacy of Patience and Records

Tendulkar’s journey remains remarkable for its sheer consistency. He reached his first ODI century only after 79 matches, yet finished with 49 ODI hundreds. He played a record 200 Tests and remains the fastest to 15,000 Test runs, achieving the feat in just 300 innings. As the latest news today confirms, the Master Blaster shows no signs of fading from public memory. His influence continues to shape Indian cricket, with young batters still studying his iconic straight drive.

Bumrah, Gill Likely to Sit Out

Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be rested for India’s solitary red-ball game against Afghanistan starting June 6 in Mullanpur. The BCCI selection committee, in consultation with the medical team, is leaning towards giving senior players a break. The decision stems from a cramped international calendar and the IPL 2026 final scheduled just six days earlier.

Only Six Days Between IPL Final and Test

The IPL 2026 final ends on May 31. The one-off Test against Afghanistan begins on June 6. With just a five-to-six-day window, team management is seriously concerned about player fatigue and injury risks. According to sources, selectors will first assess how deep the IPL teams of regular Test players go into the playoffs before taking a final call.

No WTC Points at Stake

This solitary Test carries no World Test Championship points. Officials indicated that the priority is to keep star players fresh for the ODI series against Afghanistan and the subsequent England tour. “Fielding a premium bowler like Bumrah in such a match is an unnecessary risk,” a BCCI source said. The management believes workload management must override sentiment.

Young Faces May Get Mullanpur Chance

If senior players are rested, the Mullanpur Test could see multiple debuts. Selectors are closely watching domestic performers. India-A fast bowler Gurnoor Brar and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar are ahead in the race. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has also improved his bowling significantly, increasing his chances. Harsh Dubey, Auqib Nabi, and Devdutt Padikkal are other names under consideration.

Packed June-July Schedule Ahead

The Indian team faces a relentless run from June onward. After the Afghanistan Test and ODI series, India plays a T20 series against Ireland. That is immediately followed by the England tour, featuring three T20s and three ODIs. From July 23, three T20 matches against Zimbabwe begin. Officials said squeezing Bumrah or Gill into the Afghanistan Test could backfire ahead of these high-intensity fixtures.

Afghanistan’s Test History Against India

Afghanistan began their Test journey against India in 2018 in Bengaluru. India won that match by an innings and 262 runs. Since then, Afghanistan have played 13 Tests, winning four, losing seven, and drawing two. However, they have never beaten India in any international format. In four ODIs across Asia Cups and World Cups, India have won three, with one tied in 2018. In T20 internationals, India have won eight of nine matches, with one no-result.

What Next for Selection Committee

The BCCI selection panel will announce the squad in the last week of May. The final call rests on medical advice and IPL playoff outcomes. For now, all signs point to a second-string Indian eleven taking the field in Mullanpur. As one official put it, “This is about protecting our core for what lies ahead, not about winning another home Test.” The England series remains the board’s immediate priority.

Franchise Transfer in Process

Rajasthan Royals (RR) Chairman Ranjit Barthakur has confirmed that the sale process of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise is underway and is expected to be completed by September this year. Speaking to reporters in Jaipur, Barthakur said the new owners are originally from Rajasthan, though he declined to name them until the transaction is final.

“The process has not been completed yet. This transaction is likely to be done by September 2025. Only after that can complete information be shared,” Barthakur said.

Stadium Expansion Plans Underway

The RR chairman also revealed plans to expand the Sawai Mansingh Stadium’s seating capacity to 40,000. The proposal, currently under discussion with the Rajasthan government, is expected to begin after the ongoing IPL season ends.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s administration has extended full support, Barthakur added. “This time special attention is being given to infrastructure development. The chief minister is serious about this.”

Barthakur on Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Addressing the team’s young talent, Barthakur singled out 13-year-old batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, saying the teenager needs time and proper training. “Vaibhav will have to play with patience. He is still a new player,” Barthakur said, urging realistic expectations from the youngster.

He also praised pacer Brijesh Sharma as an “excellent young bowler” and said the team’s combination looks strong this season.

No Immediate IPL Matches in Other Rajasthan Cities

On hosting IPL games outside Jaipur, Barthakur clarified that previous attempts to organise a match in Jodhpur did not materialise. The owner of Miraj Stadium in Nathdwara had also held discussions with BCCI officials, but currently, there is no feasibility for IPL there.

Shane Warne’s Legacy Remains Memorable

Asked about his most memorable experience with the franchise, Barthakur named late spin legend Shane Warne. “The energy that the team showed under his leadership is still memorable today,” he said.

Warne captained Rajasthan Royals to the inaugural IPL title in 2008.

Only One Rajasthan Player in Squad

Barthakur noted that leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi is representing the state in the current squad. He defended the limited local representation, saying franchise cricket allows players to gain experience across teams. “Players should play for different teams. This increases their experience and also benefits the state,” he added.

What Next for Rajasthan Royals

With the ownership transition set for September, the franchise is also exploring long-term infrastructure upgrades. The stadium expansion, if approved, would make Sawai Mansingh one of the larger IPL venues. Meanwhile, the team management remains focused on the ongoing IPL season, with Barthakur expressing confidence in the current squad’s balance.
