The Genomics India Conference (GIC) 2026 is being held in Bengaluru, with the main conference scheduled for September 2 and 3. A pre-conference workshop was held on September 1. The event is taking place at the Dr Babu Rajendra Prasad International Convention Centre on the GKVK campus. 

The conference brings together participants from areas including genomics, biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture, artificial intelligence and data science. Its programme covers subjects such as clinical and human genomics, agricultural genomics, microbiome research, next-generation sequencing technologies and translational genomics.

September 3 will be the final day of the main conference.

EV India Expo Concludes in Greater Noida

The EV India Expo 2026 is being organised from September 1 to 3 at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The official event website lists September 3 as the final day of the exhibition. 

The sixth edition of the exhibition focuses on electric and hybrid vehicles and related technologies. The event covers areas including electric vehicles, automotive components, battery management and storage systems, charging equipment, charging infrastructure, software and allied industries. 

The expo is scheduled to remain open from 10 am to 6 pm during the three-day event period, according to the organiser's official information. 

Esri India User Conference in New Delhi

The Esri India User Conference 2026 is taking place on September 2 and 3 at Hotel Pullman New Delhi Aerocity. The conference focuses on GIS and location-based technologies and is scheduled to conclude on September 3.

According to the official agenda, the conference includes sessions covering areas such as land, utilities and urban applications, along with paper presentations and other technical sessions. (Esri India)

The 2026-27 domestic cricket season got underway on Sunday with the 63rd edition of the Duleep Trophy, with teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among the biggest names in focus. Indian authorities have seized around 18,000 boxes of liquor bottles from the Bengaluru facility of United Spirits, the Indian subsidiary of Diageo, after inspectors allegedly found that bottles made using recycled plastic did not carry mandatory markings required for food and beverage applications.

The regulatory action was taken during an inspection by officials of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) last week, according to government documents cited in a Reuters report.

Diageo India confirmed that some of its bottles had been quarantined by authorities pending further directions. The company, however, said the products were safe for consumption and that the recycled plastic had been sourced from an FSSAI-approved recycler.

FSSAI Flags Missing Markings

According to a government memo, inspectors were informed during their visit to United Spirits' Bengaluru facility that the company was using recycled plastic for certain liquor bottles.

Officials subsequently found that the bottles did not carry markings required under applicable regulations.

A second government document reportedly noted that the bottles were marked as being made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) but lacked the prescribed symbol identifying recycled PET and indicating its suitability for food-grade use.

The authorities raised concerns related to food safety, labelling, misleading information and misbranding.

The seizure was described in the government documents as a measure taken in the interest of public health.

Diageo Says Products Are Safe

United Spirits confirmed the regulatory action but disputed any suggestion that the products posed a safety risk.

The company said some bottles had been quarantined by authorities while the matter was being reviewed.

Diageo India said the bottles were sourced from a recycler approved by the FSSAI and that the necessary tests had been conducted by suppliers.

The company said it was engaging with the food safety regulator for further direction.

The regulatory action therefore concerns the alleged absence of mandatory markings, while the company maintains that the underlying packaging material met applicable safety requirements.

Multiple Brands Involved

The action reportedly covers bottles used across several Diageo brands.

Government documents cited in the report identified products including DSP Black Deluxe Whisky, Smirnoff Zesty Lime Triple Distilled Flavoured Vodka and VAT 69 blended Scotch whisky.

The inspection involved more than half a dozen brands, according to the documents.

The bottles affected are primarily smaller retail formats, including bottles of approximately 180 millilitres.

Most of Diageo's larger liquor bottles are manufactured using glass rather than plastic.

Products Worth $1.6 Million Seized

Government documents reportedly showed that liquor products and plastic packaging material worth approximately $1.6 million were seized during the inspection.

The total seizure was estimated at around 18,000 boxes.

The action adds to compliance-related challenges facing Diageo's Indian business as regulators continue to scrutinise packaging, labelling and food safety requirements for products sold in the country.

What the Marking Means

Recycled PET, commonly known as rPET, is increasingly used in packaging as companies seek to reduce the use of virgin plastic.

Because packaging used for food and beverages can come into direct contact with products consumed by people, regulators impose specific requirements concerning the source, processing and suitability of recycled material.

Mandatory markings help identify the type of plastic and communicate whether the material meets prescribed requirements for food-grade applications.

In this case, authorities reportedly found that the bottles carried PET identification but lacked the required recycled-PET symbol.

Regulatory Review Underway

The seizure does not by itself establish that the liquor products were unsafe for consumption. The regulatory action is linked to the alleged packaging and labelling violations, while the company has maintained that the products are safe.

United Spirits said it was cooperating with the authorities and awaiting further directions.

The FSSAI's final position could determine what happens to the seized products and whether additional compliance measures or regulatory action are required.

The incident also highlights the importance of clear packaging disclosures as Indian regulators increasingly monitor the use of recycled materials in products intended for direct consumer use.

India’s private space sector has taken a major step towards developing advanced rocket propulsion systems, with Bengaluru-based Astrobase Space Technologies unveiling an 800 kN-class Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC)engine.

Named Everest, the engine is being developed for Astrobase’s planned reusable medium-lift launch vehicle. The company is targeting its first orbital flight by December 2028, with commercial operations expected around the same period.

However, the engine is still at an early stage of development. Astrobase has not yet conducted hot-fire testing, meaning the propulsion system is yet to demonstrate its performance under actual firing conditions. The company expects to begin testing in the coming months.

800 kN Thrust Engine

According to Astrobase, Everest is designed to generate around 800 kN of thrust and uses liquid oxygen and methaneas propellants.

The company is targeting a specific impulse of around 340 seconds, while the engine is designed to operate across a throttle range of approximately 50 per cent to 110 per cent.

The ability to throttle the engine is particularly important for reusable launch vehicles because controlled changes in thrust are required during different stages of ascent and landing.

Astrobase CEO Neeraj Khandelwal said the company wants to develop a reusable launch vehicle system from India and eventually establish a high-frequency orbital launch capability.

Why FFSC Engines Matter

Full-Flow Staged Combustion is considered one of the most technically demanding rocket-engine cycles.

In an FFSC engine, both the fuel and oxidiser are converted into gases before entering the combustion chamber. This architecture can improve engine efficiency and the operating conditions of turbomachinery.

Because of the engineering challenges involved, FFSC propulsion has been pursued by only a limited number of countries and companies.

The technology has been associated with advanced propulsion programmes in the United States, Russia and China. Astrobase says it is among the few commercial companies attempting to develop an engine using this architecture.

Reusable Launch Vehicle

Everest is being developed as part of Astrobase’s larger reusable launch vehicle programme.

The company plans to use the engine to power a medium-lift orbital rocket designed for repeated launches. Its first orbital flight is currently targeted for December 2028.

The timeline, however, will depend on the results of engine testing and subsequent qualification.

Before an engine can be used for an orbital mission, it must undergo multiple stages of testing, including hot-fire trials, performance validation, repeated firings and integration with the launch vehicle.

Over 70% Indigenous

Astrobase says more than 70 per cent of Everest has been developed and manufactured in India.

The company said the engine has been designed in-house and is being manufactured in Bengaluru. Imports are currently limited to components that are not yet available domestically, including certain specialised sensors.

The company sees indigenous propulsion development as an important part of building a domestic private-sector launch ecosystem.

Ambitious Launch Targets

Astrobase is also targeting a substantial increase in annual launch capacity.

The company aims to initially develop the capability to place around 100 tonnes of payload into orbit each year, with a long-term target of scaling that figure to more than 1,000 tonnes annually.

Khandelwal said the company believes the global launch market remains constrained by limited launch capacity and that additional providers could help meet growing demand.

Astrobase has not disclosed the identity of its first customer.

Testing Will Decide Next Step

The unveiling of Everest marks the beginning rather than the completion of the propulsion programme.

The engine still needs to undergo hot-fire testing, qualification and eventual flight integration. The company will also have to demonstrate that the engine can meet its targeted performance consistently under demanding operating conditions.

For now, the key test for Astrobase will be whether Everest can successfully move from an unveiled prototype to a tested and flight-qualified propulsion system.

If the company meets its planned testing and development milestones, the engine could become an important component of India’s expanding private space-launch ecosystem.

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has cancelled his scheduled comedy shows at a venue in Bengaluru's Whitefield following protests by Hindu organisations that opposed his performances over alleged remarks on Hindu deities and recent controversial statements.

According to Bengaluru Police, Kamra visited the Whitefield Police Station on Sunday and informed officials that he would not be going ahead with the scheduled performances at the venue after protests intensified.

A senior police officer said the comedian decided to withdraw the Whitefield shows in view of objections raised by Hindutva organisations, which had expressed concerns over maintaining law and order.

Shows Shifted to Koramangala

Kamra later announced on social media platform X that his performances scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday had been shifted to a venue in Koramangala.

He also informed ticket holders that bookings for the cancelled Whitefield shows would be refunded through BookMyShow and urged audiences to book tickets for the new venue, noting that seating capacity there is limited.

Earlier, Kamra had also responded to criticism on social media and indicated that he would visit the police station regarding the issue.

Objections Raised by Hindu Organisations

The controversy escalated after the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti submitted a representation to Bengaluru Police seeking cancellation of Kamra's scheduled show.

The organisation alleged that the comedian had repeatedly insulted Hindu deities in his performances and argued that allowing the event could disturb communal harmony and create law-and-order issues.

Following the objections, security agencies assessed the situation before Kamra eventually decided to cancel the Whitefield performances.

Ram-Sita Remarks Sparked Fresh Controversy

The latest dispute also stems from remarks Kamra allegedly made during a protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on July 15.

During the event, Kamra allegedly made comments concerning Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, drawing allegations of hurting religious sentiments.

Subsequently, Punjab and Haryana High Court advocate Vibhu Veerbhadra Saini filed a complaint seeking legal action against the comedian. During the hearing, the court sought a report from Chandigarh Police, asking whether the allegations disclosed grounds for registration of an FIR. The matter is scheduled for hearing on August 18.

Series of Earlier Controversies

Kunal Kamra has remained at the centre of several controversies over the past few years.

In 2025, he faced an FIR after referring to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a "traitor" during a stand-up performance, following which supporters of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) vandalised a Mumbai comedy venue.

The same year, he also drew criticism over jokes referencing actor Salman Khan's legal cases.

Earlier, his 2022 Gurugram show was cancelled following protests by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal. In the same year, he was criticised for sharing an edited video involving a child who had performed for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2020, Kamra faced contempt proceedings over comments related to the Supreme Court and was temporarily barred from flying by multiple airlines after confronting journalist Arnab Goswami aboard an IndiGo flight.

Police officials said the situation in Whitefield remained peaceful after the cancellation of the shows. Authorities continue to monitor developments while the comedian proceeds with performances at the alternative venue in Koramangala.

 Quick commerce platform Swiggy Instamart has entered the LPG delivery segment through a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), enabling customers to order cooking gas cylinders directly through the Instamart app. The service, launched on July 15, is being rolled out initially in Bengaluru, with deliveries expected within 30 to 45 minutes.

The collaboration is being described as India's first partnership between a quick commerce platform and a public sector oil marketing company for on-demand LPG cylinder delivery. The initiative aims to make access to smaller LPG cylinders faster and more convenient, particularly for urban consumers and people requiring immediate cooking fuel.

Two Cylinder Options Available

Under the new service, customers can order two HPCL LPG products through the Instamart application. These include the recently launched 10-kg HP Navya composite LPG cylinder, designed to be lighter and easier to handle, and the 5-kg traditional steel LPG cylinder.

The service is intended for consumers looking for portable LPG solutions rather than standard domestic 14.2-kg household cylinders.

No Existing LPG Connection Required

One of the key features of the initiative is that customers do not need to possess an existing domestic LPG connection to place an order.

According to the companies, first-time buyers can purchase a cylinder directly through the app after completing identity verification and submitting the required delivery documentation. This is expected to benefit students, working professionals, tenants and individuals who have recently relocated to a new city and require immediate access to cooking gas.

How the Ordering Process Works

For first-time purchases, customers will be required to complete Know Your Customer (KYC) verification during the delivery process.

For subsequent refills, users will need to hand over their empty HPCL cylinder to the authorised delivery executive while receiving the refilled cylinder, following the standard LPG exchange system.

The companies clarified that the LPG cylinders remain HPCL products, while Swiggy Instamart serves only as the digital ordering and delivery platform.

Pricing Yet to Be Announced

HPCL and Swiggy have not disclosed the pricing of either the 10-kg composite cylinder or the 5-kg steel cylinder through the app.

Officials indicated that cylinder prices will continue to follow HPCL's prescribed rates and applicable government norms. Additional convenience or delivery charges, if any, will be displayed within the Instamart application at the time of booking.

Safety Protocols Remain Unchanged

The companies have emphasised that safety standards will remain identical to conventional LPG distribution.

Deliveries will not be handled by regular Swiggy delivery partners. Instead, all LPG cylinders will be supplied through HPCL's authorised distributor network and delivered by trained personnel responsible for complying with existing safety and regulatory requirements.

This arrangement is intended to ensure that handling, transportation and customer verification continue to follow established petroleum safety norms.

Expanding Quick Commerce Services

HPCL said the partnership reflects changing consumer preferences, with urban customers increasingly expecting faster access to essential household products through digital platforms.

Swiggy Instamart, which currently operates in more than 130 cities, has steadily expanded beyond grocery deliveries into categories such as electronics, medicines, home essentials and now cooking fuel.

Industry observers believe the initiative could redefine last-mile LPG distribution in urban India if the Bengaluru pilot proves successful.

The launch may also encourage other oil marketing companies, including Indane and Bharatgas, to explore similar partnerships with quick commerce platforms such as Blinkit and Zepto, further accelerating the digital transformation of essential utility services.

A disturbing child-abuse case has surfaced from a daycare centre inside Capgemini’s HAL campus, where videos allegedly show toddlers being locked in bathrooms and placed inside a washing machine drum. Police have registered a case against five female caregivers, and the daycare has now been temporarily shut down.

The videos, which reportedly surfaced on 29 June, show a 2-3-year-old child crying inside a toilet, being splashed with water from a toilet jet, and sitting inside the drum of a front-load washing machine. The footage has sparked outrage because the children involved are reportedly the children of IT professionals working on the campus.

What happened

According to police, the daycare operated within the company campus and was being used by employees during work hours. The alleged mistreatment appears to have been caught on video by a staff member, and the clips quickly spread on social media.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Saidulu Adavath said the matter is being treated as serious, and investigators are still trying to determine whether the daycare was run directly by Capgemini or through an outside agency. The five caregivers are being questioned, but no arrests have been made so far.

Company response

Capgemini said employee and family safety is its top priority and that it is fully cooperating with investigators. As a precaution, it has closed the daycare facility on the Bengaluru campus for now.

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has also taken note of the case and will seek a report while conducting its own inquiry. That adds another layer of scrutiny to an already sensitive incident involving very young children.

Shivakumar on 3 June, and the need to maintain law-and-order with senior dignitaries in the city.
