Mumbai Gets India’s First ‘Melody Road’; Stretch Plays ‘Jai Ho’ at Set Speed

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday inaugurated India’s first “Melody Road,” a specially engineered stretch on the Mumbai Coastal Road that plays the tune of Jai Ho when vehicles drive over it at a designated speed.

The musical road is located between Amarsons Garden and Breach Candy on the southbound arm of the Dharmaveer, Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road. Officials said the project aims to promote road safety while introducing an innovative public infrastructure feature rarely seen worldwide.

The concept involves carving precisely spaced grooves into the asphalt. When vehicles pass over these rumble strips at a specific speed — typically around 80 kmph — the vibrations produced by the tyres generate musical notes that combine to form a recognisable melody.

The famous Academy Award-winning song Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire has been selected as the inaugural tune.

Explaining the collaboration, Ferenc Jári, Consul General of Hungary, said melody roads are uncommon globally and that Hungary has developed one of the most cost-effective technologies for constructing them. He said the project began after an Indian businessman experienced a melody road in Hungary and expressed interest in replicating the concept in India. Hungarian engineers subsequently partnered on the technical planning.

Engineers involved in the project said the science is straightforward but precise. Each groove creates a vibration or “thump” when struck by a moving tyre. By adjusting the spacing between grooves, designers control the frequency of these vibrations, effectively determining the pitch. Closely spaced grooves produce higher notes, while wider gaps generate lower tones.

The rhythm is shaped by the length and pattern of the grooved sections. Maintaining the recommended speed is essential; driving too fast compresses the timing of the notes, distorting the melody, while slower speeds stretch the sound and disrupt the tune.

Globally, melody roads exist in only a handful of countries, including Japan, which has developed around 30 such stretches as both tourist attractions and traffic-calming measures. Authorities say the design can encourage motorists to adhere to speed limits, as the melody plays correctly only at the intended speed.

State officials described the Mumbai installation as a pilot initiative and indicated that its performance and public response will be monitored. If successful, similar stretches could be introduced on other highways.

The project blends technology with public engagement, adding a novel dimension to India’s expanding road infrastructure.
