Air India Offered ₹10–20 Lakh to Ahmedabad Crash Victims’ Families to Settle Claims, Says UK Report

Air India has offered compensation ranging between ₹10 lakh and ₹20 lakh to families of victims killed in the June 12, 2025 Ahmedabad plane crash, in exchange for waiving their right to pursue legal action, according to a report published by London-based newspaper The Independent.

The waiver would apply across jurisdictions, preventing claims in any court worldwide.

Air India has not publicly confirmed the specific figures mentioned in the report. However, a spokesperson said the airline remains committed to supporting affected families. “After providing the initial interim amount, we have ensured that the final amount given to each family is fair and in accordance with the law,” the spokesperson said.

The proposal has drawn objections from lawyers representing 130 victims’ families. They argue that the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) probe is still underway and responsibility for the crash has not been determined. Seeking legal waivers before the conclusion of the investigation is inappropriate, they contend. Several injured survivors are also undergoing treatment.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, crashed seconds after takeoff at 1:39 PM on June 12, 2025. The aircraft struck a medical hostel building near the airport. A total of 270 people were killed, including 241 passengers and crew, along with individuals on the ground. Only one passenger survived.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft departed from runway 23 and issued a Mayday call moments after takeoff. Flightradar24 data shows the last signal was recorded at an altitude of 190 metres. The pilot had 8,200 hours of flying experience, while the co-pilot had logged 1,100 hours.

The Supreme Court on February 11 directed the Centre to submit a report within three weeks outlining the procedural protocol followed in the investigation. The government informed the court that the AAIB inquiry is in its final stages. The bench, led by Chief Justice Suryakant, said it would assess the need for a separate Court of Inquiry after reviewing the findings.

The case continues to raise questions about aircraft safety, regulatory oversight and corporate accountability. The next hearing is scheduled in three weeks.
