Over 200 artists from Bengaluru are leading the decoration, using more than 40 varieties of flowers to adorn the temple premises, including the Nandi Hall and the sanctum sanctorum. Many of the flowers were transported via air, first from Bengaluru to Indore, and then to Ujjain, ensuring freshness for the grand display. Organizers said the full decoration will be visible by Saturday evening, just ahead of the festival.

“The Mahakaleshwar Temple is being transformed into a vibrant floral paradise. Our team has been decorating the temple naturally with flowers and leaves for the past 12 years during Maha Shivaratri,” said Krishnamurthy Reddy, who is supervising the floral arrangements.

The decorations follow a South Indian Nataraja Temple motif, showcasing traditional floral patterns and intricate designs that blend artistry with devotion. The project involves meticulous planning, with artists arranging flowers in a manner that enhances the temple’s spiritual ambiance while maintaining aesthetic harmony.

Last year, the cost of Maha Shivaratri decorations at the temple was approximately Rs 30 lakh, though this year’s final expenditure will be calculated after the festival concludes. Despite the high cost, organizers emphasized the cultural and spiritual significance of using fresh and natural flowers to create a serene and auspicious environment for devotees.

The festival draws thousands of devotees from across India, and the temple expects even larger crowds this year, attracted by the promise of a lavish floral spectacle. Authorities have also coordinated logistics to manage the influx of pilgrims, ensuring smooth access to the temple complex during the celebrations.

With preparations in full swing, the Mahakaleshwar Temple is poised to offer a visual and spiritual feast, blending international floral varieties with traditional Indian craftsmanship. The annual Maha Shivaratri celebration continues to reinforce the temple’s status as a center of devotion, culture, and artistry.
