Two separate murder cases involving young women have surfaced in Chhattisgarh's capital, with police alleging that one woman was killed by her live-in partner while another was murdered by her boyfriend over suspicions of an affair.

In the first case, a B.Ed student was allegedly assaulted and strangled by her live-in partner before being taken to a government hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The accused allegedly fled the hospital after learning of her death but has since been taken into custody.

In the second incident, police solved the mystery surrounding the body of a young woman recovered from a pond in Raipur's WRS Colony. Investigators claim her boyfriend killed her following an argument over alleged infidelity and later dumped her body in the water body to conceal the crime.

B.Ed Student Found Dead

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Bharti Netam, a resident of Kokpur village in Kanker district. She was pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) course at Vikas College in Raipur and had been living with Sawant Baghel, a D.El.Ed. student from Kondagaon, in Boriyakala under the Mujgahan police station limits for the past six to seven months.

Police said Baghel allegedly assaulted and strangled Bharti before taking her to Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (Mekahara), where doctors declared her dead. He allegedly fled the hospital immediately afterwards.

Victim Had Planned to Return Home

Bharti's sister told police that the accused frequently suspected her character and allegedly assaulted her on multiple occasions.

According to the complaint, Bharti called her sister on the night of August 4, informing her that she had been beaten and wanted to return to her native village. Her sister transferred ₹3,000 online to help cover her travel expenses, but before she could leave Raipur, the alleged murder took place.

Family members who reached the hospital noticed multiple injury marks on Bharti's body, including injuries near her left eye, temple, chin and the back of her neck.

Based on the family's complaint, police registered a murder case and detained the accused for questioning.

Second Murder Solved

In another case, Raipur Police said they have cracked the murder of Nandani Jain, whose body was recently recovered from a pond in WRS Colony under Khamtarai police station limits.

Investigators alleged that Nandani was killed by her boyfriend Karan Tandi, who suspected she was involved with another man.

Police said the two had become friends through Instagram around three years ago, and the relationship later turned into a romantic one. Frequent disputes over alleged infidelity reportedly strained the relationship.

During a recent meeting, an argument allegedly escalated, after which Karan strangled Nandani to death. Police claim he later dumped her body into the pond in an attempt to destroy evidence before fleeing.

Technical Evidence Leads to Arrest

Following the recovery and identification of the victim, police used technical evidence and interrogation to trace the accused, who has now been taken into custody.

Investigators are continuing to question him and examine other aspects of the case.

Investigators suspect the husband immediately after the recovery because he had disappeared from the village following the incident. A search operation was launched, and he was later traced and detained by the police.

Sources associated with the investigation said the accused has admitted to killing his wife during questioning. According to police, he claimed he believed his wife was involved in an extramarital relationship, which allegedly motivated the crime. Officials, however, said his statement is being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.

Assistant Superintendent of Police R.K. Barman confirmed that the husband has been taken into custody and that the investigation is continuing. Police are collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from family members and local residents before filing the final chargesheet.

Lakshman Kunjam had previously served as the elected sarpanch of his village. His first wife had died several years ago, and he had four children from that marriage. Following her death, he married Jhumki Kunjam. Police said the children were not present at the house when the alleged murder took place.

The victim's relatives have also lodged a complaint, demanding strict action against the accused. Authorities are examining the family's statements along with other evidence recovered from the scene.

According to the prosecution, the woman had gone to sleep after dinner on the night of January 29, 2018. The following morning, her mother discovered her hanging from a scarf tied to a pipe inside the room.

During the investigation, police recovered a mobile phone and a suicide note. Based on the complaint lodged by the victim's mother, a case was registered against Mohammad Seraj.

Investigators later alleged that the accused was in a one-sided relationship and repeatedly pressured the woman to marry him. When she refused, he allegedly continued to pursue her, threaten her and harass both her and her family members.

Court records indicated that the alleged harassment had continued for an extended period before the woman's death.

The prosecution also presented evidence suggesting that the victim had previously attempted suicide in May 2017 by slashing her wrist. She was taken to hospital and received medical treatment. The case further revealed the emotional strain experienced by the family, with the victim's mother reportedly consuming sleeping pills due to stress arising from the situation.

While reviewing the matter, the High Court disagreed with the reasoning adopted by the lower court. Justice Vyas observed that the trial court had failed to properly appreciate the testimony of the victim's mother and had placed undue emphasis on the absence of independent witnesses.

The High Court reiterated a long-established legal principle that the quality of evidence is more important than the quantity of witnesses.

The court further held that strong oral testimony, supported by medical evidence and the overall circumstances of the case, was sufficient to establish the accused's role. It concluded that the absence of expert handwriting verification alone could not undermine the prosecution's case when other evidence pointed towards sustained harassment.

As a result, the High Court convicted Mohammad Seraj under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with abetment of suicide.

The accused, identified as 24-year-old Pintu Sahu, has been arrested from Raipur after allegedly carrying out a premeditated attack using a knife he had purchased online.

The victim, Khushi Sahu, a native of Bemetara district, was pursuing a pharmacy course while living in a rented PG in Bhilai's Ramnagar locality under the Vaishali Nagar police station limits. According to investigators, the accused had been harassing her for nearly a month by calling from multiple phone numbers after she blocked his original contact.

Alleged Obsession Turned Fatal

Police said the incident occurred on Friday, July 10, when Pintu Sahu allegedly travelled from Raipur to Bhilai after failing to contact Khushi over the phone. Investigators believe he first called the victim twice, but the calls did not go through because his number had been blocked.

He then contacted Khushi's roommate, who reportedly informed him that Khushi did not have her mobile phone with her. Soon afterwards, the accused allegedly reached the PG accommodation while the roommate was taking a bath, leaving Khushi alone in the room.

Police investigation has revealed that Khushi had informed her brother about a week before the incident that an unidentified man had been repeatedly calling and harassing her from different phone numbers.

Officials also said the accused had allegedly threatened the victim's brother two days before the murder. He is further accused of intimidating the owner of a café where Khushi worked part-time, allegedly pressuring him to make her leave the job.

According to investigators, the accused wanted Khushi to marry him despite her lack of interest.

Police said the weapon used in the crime had been purchased online, suggesting that the attack may have been planned in advance.

Following the murder, the accused allegedly escaped to Raipur, where he was later arrested. On Saturday, police brought him back to the crime scene in Bhilai to recreate the sequence of events as part of the investigation.

He reportedly took her to a labourers' quarter and established a physical relationship with her after promising to keep her as his wife. Following this, the accused allegedly continued to keep her at his quarters and exploit her, treating her as his wife.

Pregnancy Led to Refusal

In August 2025, when the woman became pregnant, the accused reportedly said he was unable to support a child and sent her back to her home in Dharamjaigarh. He continued visiting her afterward and spoke of marriage, but when she asked to be taken in permanently, he allegedly told her that his first wife was also pregnant and refused to marry her.

Threats to Victim

Sources said the accused pressured the woman to convince her family to arrange her marriage elsewhere. When she refused, he allegedly threatened to kill her.

Police Action and Arrest

Following the threat, the victim approached Punjipathra police station and filed a written complaint. A case was registered, and a female police officer recorded her statement before she underwent a medical examination. Police subsequently detained Sagar Sarathi from a labour colony near Singhal Power Plant in Tarai Maal.

During questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to being in a relationship with the woman and to her pregnancy. Based on the evidence gathered, police arrested him and produced him before the court, from where he was sent to judicial custody.

Local authorities said further investigation into the case is underway, and the medical and forensic findings will form part of the evidence presented during trial.

A 36-year-old woman in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district has alleged that she was attacked with acid by two unidentified youths while returning home late Friday night after purchasing medicine. The incident, reported from the Cantt police station area, left the woman with burn injuries and has triggered a police investigation. While the victim has claimed that an acid-like substance was thrown at her near Kajliwan Ground, police officials say they are examining all possible angles, as certain aspects of the case have raised questions during the initial inquiry. The woman was first taken to the district hospital and later referred to Bundelkhand Medical College for specialized treatment. Authorities have begun collecting evidence and reviewing available footage from nearby locations to determine the exact sequence of events. The case has drawn local attention, with residents demanding swift action and clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.

According to police and hospital sources, the victim, identified as Archana Ahirwar, a resident of Vitthal Nagar, told investigators that she was returning home after buying medicine when two young men approached her near Kajliwan Ground.

She alleged that the suspects suddenly threw a corrosive substance at her and fled the scene before she could identify them. Local residents reportedly rushed to help after hearing her cries and informed her family members.

Investigation Underway

The injured woman was initially admitted to the district hospital, where doctors provided first aid. Due to the nature of the burn injuries, she was later referred to Bundelkhand Medical College for further treatment.

Police officials confirmed that burn marks were found on the woman's back. However, investigators have not yet conclusively established whether the substance used was acid or another flammable chemical.

CCTV Search Begins

Cantt Police Station officials reached the scene shortly after receiving information about the incident. According to Station House Officer Rohit Dongare, there are no CCTV cameras installed at the exact location where the alleged attack took place.

Investigators are therefore scanning footage from nearby roads, intersections, shops, and residential areas to identify possible suspects and verify the victim's account.

The officer said that the woman informed police she had been attacked with a flammable substance. During questioning, she also named certain individuals whom she suspects may be linked to the incident. Authorities are examining those claims as part of the ongoing investigation.

Questions Remain

Police officials stated that no clear motive has emerged so far. Investigators are working to determine whether the attack was targeted, personal, or linked to any previous dispute.

Officials emphasized that all evidence, witness statements, and forensic findings will be carefully reviewed before drawing conclusions. The exact nature of the substance involved will also be confirmed through scientific examination.

Long wait ends for residents

Residents of Rewa have finally received some good news after months of waiting. The municipal corporation reopened the Mihir Sen swimming pool for the general public on Saturday, 8 June. The facility, which remains shut for nearly two years for major repairs, is now available for both regular swimmers and occasional visitors.

Locals turned up in small numbers on the first morning, with many expressing relief that the pool is functional again before the summer peaks.

Two payment options for users

The corporation has introduced a flexible fee structure to accommodate different types of users. Those who wish to swim regularly can opt for a monthly membership of ₹2,500. For residents who plan to use the pool only once in a while, an hourly rate of ₹100 has been fixed.

Officials said the idea is to ensure the pool remains accessible without discouraging casual swimmers. “Not everyone can commit to a monthly plan. The hourly option is for college students and working professionals,” a municipal officer explained.

Three sessions, one reserved for women

The pool will operate in three different time slots through the day. The morning session from 6 AM to 10 AM is open for all. In a notable move, the corporation has reserved the evening slot between 5 PM and 6 PM exclusively for women, keeping safety and convenience in mind.

The final session from 6 PM to 8 PM is again open for all. To avoid overcrowding, authorities have capped entry at 30 swimmers per session.

Strict documentation, age rules in place

Registration is mandatory before anyone can enter the pool. Applicants need to produce either an Aadhaar card, voter ID, marksheet, or birth certificate at the time of registration. Children below 18 years must carry written consent from a parent or guardian.

Officials have also clarified that kids under five years will not be allowed inside the pool area at all. “This is purely a safety measure. Young children require separate facilities which we do not have here,” a corporation source said.

For children aged between 5 and 14 years, presence of a parent or guardian is compulsory throughout the swimming session.

Lifeguards deployed, diving pool remains shut

The corporation has deployed trained lifeguards and swimming instructors for every session. Swimmers who do not know how to swim will only be allowed in the shallow section. Additionally, anyone suffering from a contagious disease will be denied entry to prevent health risks for others.

Meanwhile, the diving pool adjacent to the main facility will remain closed until further orders. Officials cited safety concerns and said a decision on reopening it will be taken only after a thorough review of standards.

Private operator yet to be finalised

According to municipal authorities, the process to select a private agency for long-term operation and maintenance of the pool is still underway. But given persistent public demand, the corporation has decided to run the facility on its own for now.

"We did not want to delay the reopening any further. The tender process takes time, but citizens needed access immediately,” a senior official said.

Residents have been asked to follow all posted rules and cooperate with security staff during their visit.
