Weekend Escapes Near Bhopal: 4 Heritage Places for History Lovers

Planning a short weekend escape from Bhopal? Explore Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Bhojpur and Udayagiri for history, heritage, ancient art and architecture.

For many people in Bhopal, a weekend break does not necessarily mean taking a flight or planning a long holiday. Some of Madhya Pradesh's most fascinating historical destinations are within a manageable drive of the city, making them suitable for short road trips.

From Buddhist monuments and prehistoric paintings to ancient temples and rock-cut sculptures, the region around Bhopal offers plenty for travellers who want their weekend to include more than just food and leisure.

For urban professionals looking for a weekend escape near Bhopal, these four heritage destinations can make for rewarding short trips.

Sanchi: Walk Through Buddhist History

Located near Vidisha, Sanchi is one of the most prominent heritage destinations around Bhopal. Its Buddhist monuments, stupas, temples and intricately carved gateways offer travellers an opportunity to experience centuries-old history in a relatively compact heritage complex.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the centrepiece of the complex. Its stone gateways feature detailed carvings depicting scenes associated with the life and teachings of Buddha.

For a weekend traveller, Sanchi works particularly well as a day trip. Visitors can spend several hours exploring the monument complex before returning to Bhopal.

The experience is less about rushing from one attraction to another and more about walking through an archaeological landscape and observing its architecture and carvings.

Bhimbetka: Where Prehistory Comes Alive

For travellers who want something different from conventional historical monuments, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters offers a glimpse into prehistoric human life.

Situated amid rocky terrain and forests, Bhimbetka is famous for its ancient rock shelters and paintings. The artwork depicts scenes involving animals, hunting, dancing and everyday activities, providing clues about the lives of prehistoric communities.

The site is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The combination of archaeology, natural surroundings and relatively short travel distance makes Bhimbetka an appealing option for a weekend road trip from Bhopal.

Rather than treating it as simply another sightseeing stop, travellers can use the visit to understand how early human communities interacted with their surroundings.

Bhojpur: A Temple With a Giant Shivling

Around the Bhopal region, Bhojpur offers a different kind of heritage experience. The town is known for the Bhojeshwar Temple, an unfinished medieval temple traditionally associated with the reign of King Bhoja.

The temple's most striking feature is its enormous Shiva Linga, carved from a single stone. Its scale immediately distinguishes the monument from many other Shiva temples.

The unfinished architectural elements are equally interesting. Visitors can observe details of the temple's construction and appreciate the scale of the original architectural vision.

Bhojpur can also be combined with other nearby attractions, making it suitable for travellers who want to turn a short visit into a fuller weekend itinerary.

Udayagiri Caves: History Carved Into Hills

Near Vidisha, the Udayagiri Caves offer another opportunity to explore India's ancient rock-cut heritage.

The caves contain sculptures and sanctuaries associated with Hindu and Jain traditions. Among the most notable carvings is the monumental Varaha depiction, which shows Vishnu's boar incarnation.

Unlike a conventional temple complex, Udayagiri requires visitors to explore the rock-cut spaces and sculptures carved directly into the hillside. This makes the destination particularly interesting for travellers fascinated by ancient Indian art and architecture.

Because of its proximity to other heritage attractions around Vidisha and Sanchi, Udayagiri can also be incorporated into a longer heritage-focused road trip.

A Weekend Built Around Heritage

The biggest advantage of these destinations is that travellers do not have to choose between a relaxing weekend and a meaningful cultural experience.

A short road trip from Bhopal can combine Sanchi's Buddhist heritage, Bhimbetka's prehistoric paintings, Bhojpur's temple architecture and Udayagiri's rock-cut sculptures.

For busy professionals, the appeal is straightforward: leave the city for a few hours, spend the weekend exploring places with thousands of years of history, and return without taking an extended break from work.

The next time a weekend feels too short for a holiday, the answer may not be to stay home. It may simply be to look a little closer to Bhopal.

Madhya Pradesh has strengthened its position on India's tourism map by recording an unprecedented rise in domestic tourist arrivals in 2025, surpassing popular destinations such as Goa and Himachal Pradesh. According to figures shared in the Rajya Sabha by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the state hosted nearly 14 crore tourists during the year, driven by its growing appeal as a destination for spiritual, heritage, wildlife, and cultural tourism.

The latest data shows that Madhya Pradesh welcomed an average of 3.82 lakh domestic tourists and around 500 foreign visitors every day in 2025. The remarkable growth reflects changing travel preferences, with more tourists choosing central India's historical landmarks, national parks, and religious destinations over conventional hill stations and beach destinations.

Record Tourist Footfall in 2025

Tourism statistics indicate that 13,95,96,049 domestic tourists visited Madhya Pradesh in 2025, along with 1,81,743 foreign tourists. On a daily basis, the state received an average of 3,82,455 domestic and 498 international visitors.

The impressive numbers have helped Madhya Pradesh maintain its place among India's leading tourism destinations. Religious centers such as Ujjain, heritage cities including Khajuraho, wildlife reserves like Kanha and Bandhavgarh, and natural attractions such as Bhedaghat continue to attract visitors from across the country and abroad.

Domestic Tourism Grows 446% in Five Years

One of the most striking highlights of the report is the state's extraordinary growth over the past five years.

Domestic tourist arrivals increased from 2.55 crore in 2021 to nearly 13.96 crore in 2025, marking a growth of more than 446 percent. The sharp increase reflects sustained investments in tourism infrastructure, improved connectivity, heritage conservation, and the promotion of religious and eco-tourism destinations.

Officials believe that improved road networks, upgraded tourist facilities, and the popularity of projects such as Mahakal Lok in Ujjain have played a significant role in attracting record numbers of visitors.

Himachal Pradesh Records Decline

While Madhya Pradesh witnessed robust growth, Himachal Pradesh experienced a decline in domestic tourist arrivals during the same period.

According to the data presented in Parliament, Himachal Pradesh received over 1.80 crore domestic tourists in 2024, but the number dropped to 1.44 crore in 2025, representing a decline of nearly 36 lakh visitors within a year.

Experts attribute the decline to natural disasters, landslides, and changing weather conditions that affected travel across the hill state. However, foreign tourist arrivals in Himachal increased marginally from 82,765 in 2024 to 84,828 in 2025, providing only limited support to the state's overall tourism performance.

Madhya Pradesh Leaves Goa Behind in Domestic Tourism

Goa, India's most famous beach destination, also trailed Madhya Pradesh in terms of domestic tourist arrivals.

After attracting 33.08 lakh domestic tourists in 2021, Goa recorded 1.03 crore domestic visitors in 2025, significantly lower than Madhya Pradesh's nearly 14 crore domestic tourists.

Although Goa welcomed approximately 5.51 lakh foreign tourists in 2025—considerably more than Madhya Pradesh's 1.81 lakh international visitors—the overall number of tourists visiting Madhya Pradesh was substantially higher.

Industry experts suggest that Madhya Pradesh's affordability, geographical diversity, rich cultural heritage, wildlife experiences, and expanding religious tourism have made it increasingly attractive for Indian travelers seeking varied travel experiences.

Heritage, Wildlife and Spiritual Tourism Drive Growth

Tourism officials attribute the state's success to its wide range of attractions that appeal to different categories of travelers.

Pilgrimage destinations like Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Khajuraho, tiger reserves including Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Pench, as well as scenic destinations like Bhedaghat's Marble Rocks and Dhuandhar Falls, continue to attract millions of visitors each year.

The combination of cultural heritage, wildlife safaris, religious tourism, and improved infrastructure has diversified Madhya Pradesh's tourism portfolio, making it a preferred destination throughout the year.

Strong Outlook for Tourism

With consistent growth in domestic travel, Madhya Pradesh is emerging as one of India's fastest-growing tourism destinations. Officials believe continued investments in infrastructure, destination development, and promotional campaigns will further strengthen the state's position in the coming years.

As travel preferences evolve, the latest figures indicate that tourists are increasingly looking beyond beaches and hill stations, placing Madhya Pradesh firmly among India's top choices for heritage, spirituality, nature, and wildlife tourism.

The victim, identified as Suryakant Kumar, a resident of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, had come to the waterfall with his family for a day trip. According to eyewitnesses, he was standing near the edge trying to take a selfie when he lost balance and plunged into the water below. The incident happened so suddenly that family members could not react in time.

As soon as information reached the police, a team from Atraila police station rushed to the spot along with SDERF personnel. A full-fledged rescue and search operation was launched immediately. SDERF officials, led by Sub-Inspector Vikas Pandey, have been conducting intensive searches in the river and surrounding areas since morning.

Despite continuous efforts, no trace of the youth has been found so far. The strong water current and depth of the gorge are making the rescue operation extremely challenging for the divers.

This is not the first such incident at Itma Waterfall. Several similar accidents have been reported in the past, raising repeated questions over safety arrangements at the tourist spot. Local residents claimed that warning boards, barricading, and adequate security personnel are often missing at dangerous points, which leads to such tragedies.

The administration has deployed teams at the spot and the search operation is continuing. Family members of the missing youth are in a state of shock and are waiting anxiously for any update.

Sonu Khan, a resident of Bargarh in Uttar Pradesh, had come to the popular tourist spot with family and friends. According to eyewitnesses, he was standing near the edge trying to take a selfie when he lost balance and plunged into the water. The incident happened so quickly that by the time others realised, he had disappeared into the deep pool.

Locals and family members immediately raised an alarm. Police were informed and a team led by ASI Mahendra Bagri from the local outpost reached the spot. Initial search efforts with the help of villagers did not yield any result. The SDERF team was then called in.

SDERF Sub-Inspector Vikas Pandey along with his team reached the waterfall around 6 am and launched an intensive search operation. Divers are facing difficulties due to the extreme depth and strong water current at the site.

Vikas Pandey said the narrow and difficult terrain makes it impossible to bring boats, so team members are conducting a combing search by entering the water themselves. The operation is continuing as police and administration officials remain present at the spot.

Itma Waterfall, known for its scenic beauty, attracts a large number of tourists, especially during the monsoon season. However, the deep gorge and strong currents have made it a risky spot, with several such incidents reported in the past.

The family of the missing youth is in a state of shock and is waiting anxiously for any positive update. Further details on the rescue operation are awaited as the search continues.

When the summer season begins in Madhya Pradesh, people start searching for destinations that offer natural beauty, peaceful surroundings and a refreshing atmosphere away from the busy city life. Among the many tourist places in the state, Bhedaghat has become one of the most popular summer travel destinations. Famous for its magnificent marble rocks, the sacred Narmada River and breathtaking waterfalls, Bhedaghat attracts thousands of tourists every year who come to enjoy nature, adventure and relaxation.

Located near Jabalpur, Bhedaghat is known for its stunning white marble cliffs that rise high on both sides of the Narmada River. These naturally carved marble rocks create one of the most beautiful landscapes in India. During summer evenings, the cool breeze from the river and the calm environment provide visitors with much-needed relief from the scorching heat.

One of the biggest attractions of Bhedaghat is the famous boat ride on the Narmada River. Tourists enjoy boating between the tall marble rocks while listening to local guides who entertain visitors with humorous commentary and stories related to the region. As the sunlight falls on the marble cliffs, the rocks change colors and create a magical view that leaves travelers amazed. The boating experience during sunset is considered one of the best attractions in Madhya Pradesh.

The beauty of Bhedaghat becomes even more special because of the world-famous Dhuandhar Falls. The waterfall is one of the most visited tourist spots in the state. The powerful flow of the Narmada River creates a smoky effect while falling from a great height, which is why it is called “Dhuandhar,” meaning smoke-like flow. The sound of the waterfall, cool water droplets and fresh air create a refreshing atmosphere even during peak summer.

Tourists visiting Dhuandhar Falls often spend hours enjoying the scenic beauty and clicking photographs. The area around the waterfall also offers ropeway rides that allow visitors to witness breathtaking aerial views of the river and marble rocks. During summer vacations, families and groups of friends visit Bhedaghat to enjoy these unique experiences together.

Apart from natural beauty, Bhedaghat is also known for its cultural and spiritual importance. The Narmada River is considered sacred in Indian culture, and many devotees visit the ghats to offer prayers and participate in evening aarti ceremonies. The peaceful surroundings near the river create a spiritual atmosphere that attracts both tourists and pilgrims.

Another reason why Bhedaghat is considered an ideal summer destination is its local market famous for marble handicrafts. Skilled artisans create beautiful decorative items, idols, jewelry boxes and home décor products using white marble stones found in the region. Tourists often purchase these handcrafted souvenirs as memories of their trip.

Food lovers can also enjoy the local flavors available around Bhedaghat. Small food stalls and restaurants serve traditional snacks, tea and refreshing drinks for travelers. During summer evenings, tourists enjoy sitting near the river while tasting local street food and watching the beautiful sunset views.

Adventure lovers also find Bhedaghat exciting because of activities like cable car rides, photography tours and nature walks. The calm surroundings and scenic beauty make it a favorite spot for photographers and travel enthusiasts. Early morning visits are especially popular because the weather remains pleasant and the sunlight reflecting on the marble rocks creates extraordinary visuals.

Summer vacations are often associated with crowded hill stations and expensive travel destinations. However, Bhedaghat offers an affordable and memorable travel experience for families, couples and solo travelers. The place combines natural beauty, adventure, spirituality and relaxation in one destination, making it suitable for visitors of all age groups.

Travel experts believe that the best time to explore Bhedaghat during summer is during the early morning or evening hours when the temperature remains comfortable. Boating in the evening under the golden sunlight creates a magical atmosphere that becomes the highlight of the trip for many tourists.

In recent years, Bhedaghat has gained popularity not only among domestic tourists but also among international travelers who come to witness its unique marble landscapes and natural beauty. The peaceful environment and refreshing river views make it an excellent escape from the stress and heat of urban life.

For anyone planning a summer trip in Madhya Pradesh, Bhedaghat stands out as one of the best travel destinations. Whether it is the unforgettable boating experience, the roaring Dhuandhar Falls, the marble handicrafts or the spiritual charm of the Narmada River, every part of Bhedaghat offers something special to visitors.
Summer vacations are the perfect time for families, couples, and adventure lovers to explore peaceful destinations away from busy city life. Madhya Pradesh provides a unique mix of greenery, heritage, and pleasant weather in some regions, making it an ideal summer travel destination.

Here are the top three places to visit in Madhya Pradesh during summer.

1. Pachmarhi – The Queen of Satpura

Pachmarhi is the only hill station in Madhya Pradesh and is one of the most popular summer destinations in the state. Located in the Satpura mountain range, Pachmarhi is famous for its cool climate, green forests, waterfalls, caves, and scenic beauty. Because of its peaceful atmosphere and refreshing weather, it attracts thousands of tourists during the summer months.

One of the main attractions of Pachmarhi is Bee Falls, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by greenery where visitors can relax and enjoy the cool water. Other famous tourist spots include Dhoopgarh, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh, Jata Shankar Cave, Pandava Caves, and Apsara Vihar. Watching the sunset from Dhoopgarh is considered one of the best experiences in Pachmarhi.

Adventure lovers can enjoy trekking, hiking, and nature walks in the forests. The area is also rich in wildlife and offers opportunities for photography and birdwatching. Since the weather remains pleasant even during peak summer, Pachmarhi becomes an excellent escape from the heat of cities. The town also has historical and spiritual importance. According to mythology, the Pandavas from the Mahabharata spent some time in these caves during their exile. This combination of natural beauty, adventure, and mythology makes Pachmarhi a complete travel destination.

2. Kanha National Park – A Paradise for Wildlife Lovers

Kanha National Park is one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in India and a must-visit destination during summer. Located in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha is known for its rich biodiversity, dense forests, and wildlife safaris. Summer is considered one of the best seasons to visit Kanha National Park because animals often come out near water sources, making wildlife sightings easier. Tourists from across India and around the world visit the park to see the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, which is the main attraction of the reserve.

Apart from tigers, Kanha is home to leopards, deer, barasingha, wild dogs, sloth bears, and many species of birds. The park inspired Rudyard Kipling’s famous novel The Jungle Book, which adds to its global popularity. The jungle safari experience in Kanha is unforgettable. Early morning and evening safaris allow visitors to explore the forest and observe animals in their natural habitat. The fresh air, greenery, and peaceful surroundings provide a refreshing break from city life.

Kanha is also important for wildlife conservation. The park has played a major role in protecting the endangered barasingha, also known as the swamp deer. Nature lovers and photographers especially enjoy the scenic landscapes and wildlife photography opportunities available here. Visiting Kanha during summer not only offers adventure but also creates awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of protecting wildlife.

3. Amarkantak – A Spiritual and Natural Retreat

Amarkantak is a beautiful hill town located at the meeting point of the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges. It is one of the most peaceful and spiritual destinations in Madhya Pradesh and is highly suitable for summer travel because of its calm weather and natural surroundings. Amarkantak is famous as the origin point of the holy Narmada River, one of the most important rivers in India. The town has great religious significance and attracts pilgrims throughout the year. However, during summer, tourists also visit the place to enjoy its cool climate and natural beauty.

One of the main attractions of Amarkantak is Kapil Dhara Waterfall, where the Narmada River falls from a great height, creating a breathtaking view. Other popular places include Narmada Kund, Dudh Dhara Falls, Mai Ki Bagiya, and ancient temples dedicated to Hindu gods and goddesses. The forests around Amarkantak are rich in medicinal plants and greenery, making the environment fresh and relaxing. Travelers who seek peace, spirituality, and nature often choose Amarkantak as their summer vacation destination.

The town is also ideal for meditation and yoga because of its calm atmosphere.
A routine evening outing turned into a horrific disaster at Jabalpur’s Bargi Dam on Thursday when a sudden, violent storm capsized a tourist department cruise. Rescue teams have recovered nine bodies so far, including a Delhi-based mother found tightly clutching her four-year-old son. While 28 people were pulled to safety in the immediate aftermath, four tourists remain missing as search operations enter a critical phase.

The incident occurred around 5:00 PM on Thursday, approximately 300 meters from the shore. Local authorities confirmed that the region was hit by a massive storm with wind speeds reaching 74 km per hour, leaving the vessel’s pilot with almost no time to navigate to safety.

Heartbreaking scenes during recovery

The most harrowing moment for the rescue teams came on Friday morning when they recovered the bodies of Marina and her son, Trishan. The family had traveled from Delhi for a vacation. In her final moments, Marina had reportedly tucked her son inside her own life jacket, holding him against her chest. Even after being submerged for hours, the two were found locked in an embrace. While Marina and Trishan perished, her husband Pradeep and daughter Siya managed to survive the capsize.

Massive search operation underway

Bargi City CSP Anjul Mishra stated that while the SDRF began operations on Thursday evening, the efforts were hampered by fading light and deteriorating weather. On Friday, the Indian Army joined the mission alongside specialized units. A technical team with a helicopter has been dispatched from Hyderabad, and a paramilitary squad from Kolkata is already on-ground. Divers are currently working at a depth of 20 feet, using hydraulic machines and pincers to move the submerged wreckage.

Discrepancy in passenger count

The administration is currently investigating a significant lapse in protocol. While official records show tickets were issued for only 29 people, initial ground reports suggest between 43 and 47 tourists were actually on board. "We are looking into the manifest and the ticketing process to understand why there is a mismatch in the numbers," an official said. The cruise, which was built in 2006, reportedly had a total capacity of 60, but the overcrowding relative to the issued tickets has raised eyebrows.

Pilot cites sudden storm

Mahesh, the cruise pilot with a decade of experience, survived the incident and recounted the chaos. According to him, the storm was so sudden and violent that passengers didn't even have time to reach for life jackets. He noted that the wind rendered the vessel uncontrollable within seconds, causing it to list and eventually submerge before help could reach them from the jetty.

Government announces ex-gratia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, who is expected to reach Jabalpur this evening, has ordered a high-level inquiry into the safety lapses. Meanwhile, State Tourism Minister Dharmendra Lodhi faced criticism after appearing unaware of the local regulations regarding boat operations in the Narmada backwaters during a media briefing.

Families wait in agony

The tragedy has devastated several families, including that of Kamraj Arya, an employee at the Khamaria Ordnance Factory. Kamraj had gone for the outing with 15 family members. While his elderly parents stayed back on the shore, Kamraj, his wife, and their children boarded the boat. While one son was rescued, Kamraj and his wife remain among the missing.

As of Friday afternoon, nine victims have been identified, including residents from Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Bhopal, and local areas of Jabalpur. The identification of the remaining bodies is currently being processed at the district hospital.

Ujjain Temple Management Committee introduces ‘Tatkal’ online booking to streamline devotee footfall and ensure transparency in daily rituals.

In a significant move to streamline crowd management and enhance transparency, the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee has officially discontinued the offline permit system for the world-famous Bhasma Aarti. Starting this week, all permits that were previously issued via physical counters will now transition to a dedicated online "Tatkal" quota, ensuring devotees no longer have to endure grueling hours in long queues.

Digital Shift for Devotees

The decision marks a paradigm shift in how the temple handles its daily influx of thousands of pilgrims. Under the previous system, nearly 300 permits were issued offline a day in advance, often forcing devotees to wait for five to six hours at temple counters. According to officials, the offline counter has been permanently closed to prevent mismanagement and provide a more dignified experience for visitors.

New Tatkal Booking Norms

Under the revised rules, the 300 permits previously reserved for offline distribution have been converted into a "Tatkal" online quota. This window opens exactly one day prior to the desired date of visit. For instance, if a devotee wishes to attend the aarti on April 15, the booking portal will go live at 8:00 AM on April 14. These slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis via the temple’s official website.

Revised Fee Structure Implemented

While the offline permits were earlier free of cost, the new online Tatkal system carries a nominal fee. Devotees will now be required to pay ₹200 per person to secure a spot in the Bhasma Aarti through this immediate window. Sources indicated that this fee is aimed at maintaining the digital infrastructure and managing the high demand for the early morning ritual.

Advance Booking Cycle Shortened

In another major policy change, the committee has reduced the advance booking period for regular Bhasma Aarti slots. Previously, devotees could book their permits up to three months in advance. This has now been restricted to a one-month window. For the month of June, the booking portal will open on May 1 at 8:00 AM, following a similar pattern for subsequent months to ensure more equitable access.

Evening Rituals Go Paid

The digital transformation isn't limited to the morning aarti. Following the successful implementation of online tracking for the Sandhya (Evening) and Shayan (Night) Aartis on February 19, the committee has reinforced the paid entry model. Devotees opting for seated darshan during these rituals must pay ₹250. However, those who do not wish to pay can still avail themselves of the ‘Chalit Darshan’ (moving darshan) facility free of charge.

Streamlining Entry and Access

To maintain order, the temple has set strict entry deadlines for the various rituals. For the Sandhya Aarti, the booking portal opens daily at 12:00 PM, with the final entry permitted until 6:00 PM. Similarly, for the Shayan Aarti, the window opens at 4:00 PM, with a cutoff time for entry set at 10:00 PM. This structured approach is part of a larger effort to modernize India’s religious tourism hubs.

Future Outlook for Pilgrims

The integration of technology into the Mahakal Temple’s administrative framework is expected to curb the influence of unauthorized middlemen and reduce physical congestion at the shrine. As part of the latest news today, temple authorities have urged devotees to use only the official portal for all transactions. This English News Portal India update serves as a guide for pilgrims planning their visit to the holy city of Ujjain.
