Winter Hydration Hack: Why You Need Methi Water and Mulethi Tea to Beat Pollution

Smog and cold air are choking India. Learn how fenugreek water, mulethi tea, and amla shots can protect your respiratory system and keep you hydrated this winter.

With North India shrouded in a dense layer of smog and fog, the combination of low temperatures and high AQI (Air Quality Index) has created a public health challenge. On days like today, staying hydrated isn't just about quenching thirst—it's about building a defense mechanism. Nutritionists are now pushing for "functional hydration" using desi ingredients to combat the dual assault of cold and pollution.

"We often forget that hydration drops in winter because we don't feel sweaty. This thickens mucus and makes our lungs vulnerable to pollutants," says Rashmeet Kaur Gupta, a clinical nutritionist and integrative health coach. "Drinks like fenugreek (methi) seed water are a game-changer. The natural compounds help thin excess mucus, easing congestion caused by high particulate matter in the air" .

The trend for February 2026 is the "Amla-Turmeric Shot." Unlike imported wellness shots, this desi version packs a punch. Fresh amla juice with a pinch of turmeric and black pepper provides a megadose of Vitamin C and curcumin, which manage inflammation caused by seasonal allergies and pollution . Furthermore, Licorice (Mulethi) tea is being recommended for those with scratchy throats. Its demulcent properties soothe the throat lining instantly, providing relief from the constant irritation of dry, cold air .

Health experts advise keeping a thermos of Cumin-Coriander-Fennel tea handy. This trifecta supports digestion, which often slows down in winter, and helps the body process heavy winter foods without creating toxins (ama) that lead to disease .
