Unseasonal rain and dust storms lash Madhya Pradesh during Nautapa, leaving two dead in Neemuch and causing mercury to plummet drastically in Sheopur.

A sudden spell of severe dust storms, heavy rainfall, and isolated hailstorms across half of Madhya Pradesh has dramatically disrupted the intense summer heat, causing a massive drop in day and night temperatures. The intense weather shift, coming right during the traditional 'Nautapa' period, brought welcome relief from the heat but left a trail of destruction, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries across multiple districts.

Tragedy strikes Neemuch district

In a tragic incident reported from Singoli in the Neemuch district on Monday night, a mother and her son were killed when the roof of their dilapidated house collapsed under the impact of heavy rain and strong winds. The deceased have been identified as Sosar Bai Dhanotia and her son, Nilesh Dhanotia. Local sources confirmed that Nilesh worked as a newspaper distributor in the area. Following the incident, the local administration announced a total financial assistance of Rs 9 lakh for the grieving family.

Mercury tumbles in Sheopur

According to weather officials, the most dramatic temperature drop was recorded in Sheopur, where the night temperature plunged by a staggering 9.6 degrees Celsius in a single night. Registering a minimum temperature of 15.4 degrees Celsius, Sheopur surprisingly turned out to be colder than Pachmarhi, the state's lone hill station, which usually retains the lowest temperature during this season.

Widespread destruction and injuries

The severe weather system brought heavy winds that uprooted trees and damaged properties in several areas. In Dewas district, a violent dust storm ripped away the tin roofs of houses. In Marethi village under Rupakhedi, the flying tin sheets injured nearly six to seven members of a family. Local reports indicate the winds were strong enough to throw the heavy sheets nearly 500 meters away, destroying stored grains and household items. Similar disruptions were reported from Mandsaur, where a falling tree killed livestock, and in Morena, where the Kailaras town witnessed prolonged late-night showers.

Regional temperature variations

The Meteorological Department data showed significant rainfall across various pockets, with Satna receiving nearly an inch of rain, Betul three-fourths of an inch, and Sheopur recording over half an inch. Major urban centers also witnessed a dip in night temperatures, with Bhopal and Indore recording 22 degrees Celsius and 22.1 degrees Celsius respectively, while Ujjain dropped to 21 degrees Celsius. While the Gwalior-Chambal region continues to face humid conditions and strong sunshine during the daytime, the nights have turned noticeably cooler, providing much-needed respite to the locals.

Heavy wind alert issued

The current weather shift is expected to persist over the next few hours. The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh alert for 13 districts in the state, warning of lightning strikes and high-speed squalls. Districts including Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Maihar, Singrauli, Shahdol, Anuppur, Mandla, Dindori, Jabalpur, Umaria, and Katni are likely to experience gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 km/h or more. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during the peak hours of the alert.

Rain, Thunderstorms Lash Several MP Districts; Dust Storms Hit Indore, Dewas

Madhya Pradesh witnessed pre-monsoon rain in Shivpuri, Tikamgarh, Guna, Sehore and Ujjain while dust storms lashed Indore, Dewas and Mhow on Monday.

Several parts of Madhya Pradesh experienced pre-monsoon showers and strong winds on Monday, offering much-needed relief from the intense summer heat even as dust storms disrupted normal life in some western districts.

Districts including Shivpuri, Tikamgarh, Guna, Sehore, and Ujjain received moderate to heavy rainfall at different intervals. In contrast, Indore, Dewas, and Mhow witnessed strong dust-laden winds that reduced visibility and caused minor damage.

Rain brings respite in eastern and northern MP

In Tikamgarh, strong winds started around 10:30 am followed by rainfall that continued intermittently. Guna saw a sharp spell of rain around 11:30 am that lasted nearly 10 minutes, with reports of showers also in Bamori and Kumbhraj areas.

Sehore received steady rain between 12 pm and 1:30 pm. Tragically, two goats were electrocuted in Chanakyapuri Colony after lightning struck an electricity distribution pole. Hail was also reported in the Amalaha Sonda area of the district.

Western MP battles dust storms

While some regions got rain, western Madhya Pradesh dealt with dusty conditions. In Indore, clouds gathered by afternoon followed by strong gusts of wind. A dust whirlwind was reported in Kanadiya area. Similar dusty winds affected the Rau bypass in Mhow, causing inconvenience to drivers.

In Dewas, a strong dust storm uprooted a tree on the Bhopal road and tore banners and posters along main routes. Agar Malwa also saw a dust storm followed by light rain, with a hardware shop shutter blown away on Baijnath Mahadev Road.

Other districts report scattered activity

Betul received rain with strong winds after 2 pm. Shajapur’s Akodia area saw brief showers around 2:20 pm. Satna experienced 20 minutes of heavy rain, while Rajgarh’s Khilchipur, Machalpur, and Chapiheda received moderate rainfall for nearly an hour. Ujjain also recorded strong winds followed by rain in the afternoon, bringing down the humidity.

In Mandla, intermittent rain since morning cooled the atmosphere significantly in both urban and rural pockets. Dhar’s Pithampur area saw clouds and strong winds after a sunny morning.

Monsoon arrival likely delayed

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the southwest monsoon, which normally reaches Kerala by June 1, is yet to make landfall this year. Consequently, its arrival in Madhya Pradesh — usually expected around June 15 — may be delayed by a week.

Officials suggest the monsoon could enter the state between June 20 and 22. The current pre-monsoon spells are being attributed to western disturbances and local convective activity.

Impact on daily life and agriculture

The scattered rainfall has brought down day temperatures in several places, including Bhopal, where a noticeable drop provided relief to residents. Farmers welcomed the showers as they prepare fields for the upcoming kharif season, though officials have cautioned against expecting uniform rain across the state.

Traffic was briefly affected in some areas due to strong winds and reduced visibility. Local authorities have advised people to stay indoors during dust storms and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.

Next spell expected soon

The Meteorological Centre Bhopal has forecast more such spells of rain and thunderstorms in the coming days in many parts of the state. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 38-42°C in most districts, with a further drop expected in areas that receive good rainfall.

As the state waits for the full monsoon, these pre-monsoon activities continue to provide intermittent relief from the summer heat.

Rewa Heatwave Continues as Nau Tapa Keeps Temperature Above 42°C

Rewa heatwave conditions persist during Nau Tapa with temperatures above 42°C. IMD forecasts slight relief in the coming days.

The impact of Nau Tapa continues in Rewa, with temperatures remaining above 42°C. The IMD has indicated slight relief from the intense heat after the next three days.

Rewa continues to grapple with severe summer conditions as the effect of Nau Tapa remains firmly in place, keeping daytime temperatures above the 42-degree Celsius mark. While residents are enduring scorching heat and uncomfortable humidity, weather officials have suggested that a modest drop in temperature could arrive during the first week of June.

The city witnessed intense sunshine from the early hours of Saturday, with hot winds making outdoor movement increasingly difficult by afternoon. The combination of high temperatures and humidity added to public discomfort, particularly during peak daytime hours.

Heat Remains Intense

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Rewa's maximum temperature on Saturday was expected to hover around 42°C, while the minimum temperature remained close to 28°C. Although slightly lower than the previous few days, the temperature continues to stay well above normal levels.

The ongoing Nau Tapa period, traditionally considered the hottest phase of summer in central India, has kept temperatures consistently above 40°C. Residents across the Vindhya region have been facing prolonged heat stress as a result.

Three Days of Extreme Conditions

Weather records from recent days indicate little variation in daytime temperatures.

On May 27, Rewa recorded a maximum temperature of 43°C and a minimum of 26°C. Similar conditions prevailed on May 28 and May 29, when the maximum temperature remained at 43°C while nighttime temperatures stayed around 28°C.

The sustained heat has prevented any meaningful cooling, even after sunset, leading to discomfort both during the day and at night.

Markets See Reduced Activity

The impact of the weather has become visible across the city. During afternoon hours, major roads and market areas reported noticeably lower footfall compared to normal days.

Many residents preferred to remain indoors, limiting non-essential travel. Commercial activity in some local markets also appeared slower during the hottest part of the day as temperatures peaked.

Relief May Begin Soon

The IMD's latest forecast indicates that the maximum temperature is likely to remain around 42°C on May 31 and June 1 before easing slightly to 41°C on June 2.

Meteorologists attribute the expected moderation to the influence of a western disturbance affecting weather patterns across parts of north and central India. While the projected decline is not expected to bring immediate relief, it may signal the beginning of a gradual change in conditions.

Residents Struggle With Humidity

Apart from the heat, rising humidity has emerged as a major concern for residents. Many people say the weather becomes difficult to tolerate by late morning and remains uncomfortable well into the night.

The lack of cooling during evening hours has affected daily routines, particularly for children, elderly residents and those working outdoors. Even cooling appliances such as fans and air coolers have provided limited comfort during periods of peak heat.

Health Advisory Issued

Doctors and health experts have advised residents to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between noon and 4 pm. People have also been urged to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and take adequate precautions while travelling outdoors.

Officials say prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.

Outlook for Vindhya Region

Weather experts believe a broader shift in atmospheric conditions could become visible during the first week of June. While the region is unlikely to see an immediate end to hot weather, a gradual reduction in temperatures may provide some respite after several days of intense heat.

For now, however, the Nau Tapa heatwave continues to dominate weather conditions in Rewa, keeping residents on alert as summer reaches one of its most challenging phases.

MP Weather Turns Dramatic: Lightning Damages Guna Temple as Rain Hits 26 Districts

MP weather changed dramatically as rain, thunderstorms and hail affected 26 districts, while lightning damaged Guna’s Hanuman Tekri Temple.

A sudden shift in MP weather brought rain, thunderstorms and hail to several districts, while lightning struck the famous Hanuman Tekri Temple in Guna, damaging its spire.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed a sharp change in weather conditions on Saturday, bringing relief from the intense Nautapa heat across several regions but also triggering thunderstorms, lightning strikes and hailstorms in parts of the state. One of the most significant incidents was reported from Guna, where lightning struck the renowned Hanuman Tekri Temple, damaging the temple’s spire during a spell of stormy weather.

According to officials, rain and thunderstorms were reported in at least 26 districts over the past 24 hours, affecting major cities including Gwalior, Indore, Ujjain and Bhopal. The weather activity came amid an ongoing heatwave phase that had pushed temperatures beyond 45 degrees Celsius in several parts of Madhya Pradesh during the Nautapa period.

The lightning strike occurred on Friday night as strong winds and rain swept through Guna district. Local authorities confirmed that the upper portion of the Hanuman Tekri Temple structure suffered damage after being hit by lightning. No injuries were reported, but the incident drew attention from devotees and residents, given the temple’s prominence in the region.

Rainfall was recorded across a wide geographical spread. Data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that Tikamgarh received more than an inch of rainfall during the past 24 hours, while Datia and Nowgong also recorded significant precipitation. Showers were reported from Gwalior, Dhar, Ratlam, Ujjain, Damoh, Rewa, Sagar, Satna, Umaria, Khargone, Shivpuri, Dindori, Khandwa, Mandsaur, Dewas, Jhabua, Morena and Sheopur, among other districts.

In several locations, the weather turned severe. Hailstorms were reported from Sheopur and Dewas, while gusty winds disrupted normal activity in parts of western and northern Madhya Pradesh. Residents in some districts reported temporary waterlogging on roads following intense but short-duration rainfall.

Bhopal also experienced cloudy conditions from the morning hours, offering respite from the scorching temperatures recorded earlier this week. Similar relief was felt in rural and semi-urban areas where temperatures had remained unusually high through most of May.

Storm Alert Continues

The Meteorological Department has warned that unstable weather conditions are likely to persist over the next few days. An alert has been issued for districts including Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Khargone, Khandwa, Sehore and Harda, where thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching up to 70 kmph, lightning activity and hail are possible.

Several other districts, including Bhopal, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Narmadapuram, Sidhi and Singrauli, may witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of up to 50 kmph.

Heatwave Eases Gradually

The latest forecast suggests that heatwave conditions are likely to weaken from May 31 onward as moisture-bearing systems influence weather across central India. The IMD has indicated that many districts may continue to receive rain, thunderstorms and isolated hail events between May 31 and June 2.

Even as rainfall activity increases, some regions remain under heat alerts. Orange warnings for severe heat conditions have been issued for parts of central and eastern Madhya Pradesh, while thunderstorms are expected to occur simultaneously in several districts.

Impact During Nautapa

The weather reversal is particularly notable because it has occurred during Nautapa, traditionally considered the hottest period of the summer season. Since May 25, several locations, especially Khajuraho and Nowgong, have recorded temperatures above 47 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists say such fluctuations are not unprecedented, though the intensity and spread of recent rainfall have provided welcome relief to residents battling prolonged heat. In districts such as Dindori, local reports indicated a noticeable drop in temperature following the morning showers.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid open areas during lightning activity and stay hydrated as daytime temperatures continue to remain high despite intermittent rainfall.

With forecasts pointing to more rain and storm activity in the coming days, Madhya Pradesh’s weather is expected to remain highly variable, bringing a mix of relief and disruption across the state.

Rewa Heatwave: Temperature Hits 44°C During Nautapa

Rewa sizzles at 44°C on second day of Nautapa. IMD forecasts three more days of intense heat with no nighttime relief. Heatwave-like conditions expected to persist.

Temperatures cross 44°C in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district, with no immediate relief in sight for at least three more days

The second day of Nautapa turned out to be a trial by fire for Rewa residents on Tuesday, as the mercury touched 44 degrees Celsius by early afternoon. Streets that are usually bustling with activity wore a deserted look, with only the occasional auto-rickshaw braving the heat.

What has officials particularly worried is the overnight temperature. The minimum settled around 28 to 29 degrees, offering little window for the human body to recover from daytime exposure.

Heat Already Building Before Nautapa

Weather data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows the current spell didn't arrive suddenly. Even before the nine-day Nautapa period formally began, Rewa was already simmering. On May 23, maximum temperature touched nearly 45 degrees. The following two days recorded readings between 43 and 44 degrees.

Local authorities confirmed that the district hasn't seen nighttime temperatures drop significantly for nearly a week now, a pattern that typically precedes more severe heatwave conditions.

Three More Days of Discomfort

If IMD's city forecast holds, residents shouldn't expect any major relief soon. For May 26, the maximum is expected to hover between 43 and 44 degrees. May 27 could touch 44 degrees again, while May 28 will likely see similar readings.

Night temperatures are projected to stay within 28 to 29 degrees. This means even after sunset, the air retains enough heat to make sleeping difficult without artificial cooling.

'Feels Like Fire Raining'

Ground-level responses paint a grim picture. Rajesh Patel, a resident of Gudh area, told local reporters that stepping out past noon has become nearly impossible. "It feels like fire raining down," he said.

Sunita Mishra, another resident, pointed to the hot winds — locally called 'loo' — that continue well past sunset. "Even at night, there's no peace. These hot winds don't stop," she said.

Initial reports from community health centres in the district have not indicated major heat-related hospitalisations yet, but officials are bracing for a possible rise in cases over the next 48 hours.

Heatwave-Like Conditions Likely to Persist

The IMD has indicated that Rewa may continue to experience heatwave-like conditions for the next few days. A brief advisory issued through district administration channels urged people to avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours, drink adequate water even if not feeling thirsty, and step out only when absolutely necessary.

Vulnerable groups — the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions — have been advised to remain indoors between 11 am and 4 pm.

For now, Rewa waits. And the heat shows no signs of letting up.

Severe heatwave conditions continued to grip large parts of India on Sunday, with Uttar Pradesh’s Banda recording a scorching 46.2°C even as thunderstorms brought temporary relief to some northern regions. Private weather agencies reported that 37 Indian cities figured among the 50 hottest places globally, highlighting the extreme summer of 2026.

Brahmapuri in Maharashtra remained the hottest spot in the country for the second consecutive day, touching 47.1°C on Saturday. Several other locations including Chandrapur, Raipur and Prayagraj also saw temperatures soar above 45°C, according to data from AQI.in.

Extreme Temperatures Sweep Multiple States

More than half the country battled intense heat, with maximum temperatures crossing 45°C in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha. In Delhi, several areas crossed 44°C, forcing residents to seek whatever shade they could find during peak afternoon hours.

However, afternoon thunderstorms and scattered rainfall offered some respite in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Temperatures in parts of Rajasthan dropped below 45°C after the weather shifted suddenly late Saturday.

Heatstroke Deaths Reported in Telangana

The extreme conditions have begun claiming lives. Telangana reported 16 heatstroke deaths across seven districts in the past 24 hours. The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mulugu and Mahbubnagar districts till May 26. Officials urged citizens to avoid outdoor activity between 11 am and 4 pm.

Ground Reality Amid Scorching Heat

Across northern and central India, people adapted to the harsh weather in their own ways. In New Delhi, commuters wore caps and scarves to shield themselves from the blazing sun and hot winds. At Prayagraj railway station, passengers wrapped gamchas around their heads and shoulders while waiting for trains.

In Amritsar, a woman was seen covering her family with a dupatta for protection. Nagpur witnessed bikers covering their faces and heads with cloth to beat the heat. Even tourists at the Taj Mahal in Agra struggled, with many stopping frequently to drink water.

Wildlife too felt the impact. At Birsa Munda Zoological Park in Ranchi, authorities sprayed water in the lion enclosure to keep the animals cool.

Two-Day Weather Outlook

The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued heatwave conditions for the next couple of days in several states. On May 25, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are likely to see clear skies and intense sunshine. Southern states such as Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, along with Assam and Meghalaya, may receive rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

On May 26, heatwave alerts remain active for Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Humid conditions are expected to make it uncomfortable in West Bengal and Odisha.

Heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Karnataka and West Bengal.

Regional Heatwave Alerts

Rajasthan has issued heatwave warnings for 18 districts even as light rain occurred in Jaipur, Tonk, Alwar, Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar. Madhya Pradesh has alerted 37 districts, with Nowgong and Khajuraho crossing 45°C. Himachal Pradesh is bracing for severe heat over the next five days, particularly in its plains and lower hills starting May 26. Gujarat too expects dry conditions and temperatures above 40°C till the end of the month.

The current spell of extreme heat comes as India experiences one of its harshest pre-monsoon periods in recent years. With monsoon arrival still weeks away in most parts, authorities continue to advise caution, especially for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children and outdoor workers.

As temperatures remain high across large parts of the country, the India heatwave is likely to dominate public attention and administrative focus in the coming days.

Rewa Temperature Crosses 43°C, Heatwave Tightens Grip

The mercury in Rewa district has climbed steadily over the past three days, touching a searing 43°C on May 15 and showing little sign of easing. With daytime conditions resembling a heatwave and nights offering minimal relief due to high humidity, residents are struggling to cope with the intense summer spell.

Local authorities and the weather office have noted persistently dry conditions, with strong hot winds and bright sunshine making afternoons particularly punishing. The absence of any significant weather system to bring rain or cloud cover has kept temperatures elevated above 40°C.

Sharp Rise in Daytime Heat

On May 14, the maximum temperature stood at 42.1°C with a minimum of 27.3°C. The following day, it peaked at 43°C while the night temperature rose to 28°C. Even on May 16, when the day temperature dipped slightly to 41.8°C, the minimum remained high at 27.6°C. These readings confirm a pattern of sustained heat with no break in sight.

The combination of high daytime temperatures and warm nights has left people exhausted, as the air remains heavy and uncomfortable even after sunset.

Forecast Signals Further Rise

Weather experts predict the heat will intensify in the coming days. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 42.5°C on May 17 and climb to 43.5°C on May 18. By May 19, it could touch 44°C, according to initial forecasts.

Hot winds during peak afternoon hours are expected to worsen the discomfort, turning open areas and roads into virtual ovens.

Ground Reality: Residents Bear the Brunt

Locals say the impact is visible everywhere. Rajesh Mishra, a resident of Hospital Chowk, described the situation: “In the afternoon it feels like the roads are burning. Stepping out for any non-essential work has become very difficult.”

Ajay Patel from the Civil Lines area echoed the sentiment, noting that the rising heat over the past few days has made even sleeping at night difficult. Many households report increased use of coolers and fans, yet the relief remains limited.

Streets in Rewa see thinner crowds during peak hours, with most people choosing to remain indoors between noon and late afternoon. Markets and offices adjust timings where possible, but daily wage workers and those in outdoor jobs continue to face hardship.

Health Advisory Issued

Weather specialists have urged residents to take precautions. They recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, especially between 12 noon and 4 pm, when heat stress is highest. Drinking plenty of water and fluids, wearing light cotton clothes, and using umbrellas or caps when stepping out are being advised to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Hospitals in the district are on alert for cases of heat exhaustion and dehydration, though no major spike has been officially reported so far.

Why the Prolonged Heat

Madhya Pradesh, including Rewa, is experiencing a typical but severe pre-monsoon heat buildup this year. The lack of thundershowers or western disturbances that usually provide temporary relief has allowed temperatures to build up unchecked. Similar conditions have been observed in several other districts of the state.

Agricultural activities have also been affected, with farmers trying to complete irrigation work early in the morning or late evening to avoid the worst of the heat. Livestock too requires extra care, with many owners ensuring shade and water availability during the day.

What Lies Ahead

While the immediate forecast points to continued high temperatures, any change in wind patterns or incoming moisture could alter the situation. The India Meteorological Department is expected to issue updated bulletins in the next 48 hours.

Until then, authorities are appealing for public cooperation in following heat safety measures. Residents are being asked not to ignore early signs of heatstroke such as dizziness, nausea, or excessive fatigue.

The current spell serves as a reminder of the intensifying summer challenges in the region, pushing both administration and citizens to adapt quickly. As temperatures edge closer to 44°C, the focus remains on staying hydrated and minimising exposure during the hottest parts of the day.

Gwalior and 21 districts likely to see more rain today; heat persists in 34 others

A spell of thunderstorms and rain brought relief to parts of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, pushing temperatures below 34°C in several places including Rewa, Gwalior, Nougoun, Satna and Sidhi. While some areas witnessed dusty winds and light showers, others remained under cloudy skies.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation is active over the state, supported by another system in the upper levels and a trough line in the eastern region. This weather activity is expected to continue on Friday, with alerts issued for thunderstorms accompanied by rain in multiple districts.

Rain and Winds Hit Several Areas

On Thursday, Sehore experienced strong dusty winds in the evening, while light to moderate rainfall occurred in Tikamgarh, Narmadapuram and Sheopur. The Gwalior-Chambal and Rewa-Shahdol regions saw a mix of clouds and gusty winds. Most cities recorded maximum temperatures below 40°C, offering a break from the usual May heat.

21 Districts Under Thunderstorm Alert Today

The weather department has forecast thunderstorms and rain for Friday in 21 districts: Gwalior, Bhind, Morena, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Singrauli, Maihar, Umaria, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Mandla, Seoni and Balaghat.

Local officials said residents should take precautions against strong winds and lightning. In rural areas, farmers welcomed the rain for standing crops even as strong gusts raised concerns about damage to trees and weak structures.

Heat to Persist in 34 Districts

Meanwhile, the impact of summer will continue in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain and 31 other districts, where daytime temperatures are likely to hover around or above 40°C. The contrast in weather across the state highlights the typical variability seen in Madhya Pradesh during May.

Why Rain is Expected for Next Two Days

Meteorologists attribute the current spell to the active cyclonic circulation and the trough. A fresh weather system is likely to become active from May 10, which could bring more widespread rain and thunderstorms in the coming days. However, from May 10-11, heat is expected to intensify across the state once the current systems weaken.

May Weather Trends in Major Cities

Bhopal: The capital has a history of sharp temperature swings and rain in May. Over the past decade, the mercury has touched 46.7°C, while annual rainfall events have been recorded every year between 2014 and 2023, with some years seeing over two inches of rain.

Indore: Known for intense summer heat, Indore recorded its highest May temperature of 46°C in 1994. The city also saw nearly three inches of rain in May 2023, with rainfall occurring in nine out of ten years in the previous decade.

Gwalior: The city often records the highest temperatures in the state. The all-time high in May stands at 48.3°C (1947), with multiple instances above 46°C in recent years. Significant rainfall, including 41.9 mm in 24 hours in 1953, has also been documented.

Jabalpur: Temperatures have crossed 45°C multiple times, with a peak of 46.7°C. Consistent May rainfall has been observed every year from 2014 to 2023, including over three inches in 2021.

Ujjain: The city saw a high of 46°C in 2010. While last year remained relatively moderate at 42.4°C, light rainfall of around 0.75 inches was recorded.

Public Reaction and Precautions

Many residents in rain-affected areas expressed relief after days of rising temperatures. “The evening wind and light showers brought much-needed coolness,” said a Sehore resident. However, authorities have urged people to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and secure loose objects at home.

Farmers in the eastern districts hope the rain will aid rabi crop harvesting and early kharif preparations, though excessive winds remain a worry. The IMD has advised monitoring updates closely as the weather pattern shifts over the weekend.

As Madhya Pradesh navigates this mixed spell of heat and rain, the coming days will be crucial for both urban planning and agriculture. Officials continue to monitor the evolving systems for any further alerts.

IMD warns of heavy showers, thunderstorms in Madhya Pradesh for next 48 hours as storms claim 20 lives in Bihar, uproot 15,000 trees in Haryana.

A powerful weather system brewing over northwest Rajasthan has triggered widespread rain and storms across India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a rain alert for 39 districts in Madhya Pradesh for the next 48 hours. Instead of the blistering May heat, parts of the state saw rainfall and hail on Monday, affecting 15 districts including the capital.

MP Braces for More Downpours

The alert covers key areas like Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, and Jabalpur, where strong winds and thunderstorms are expected through Wednesday. Local authorities confirmed rain and hail in 15 districts yesterday, with gusty winds adding to the disruption. "Conditions are likely to intensify in isolated pockets," an IMD official in Bhopal told reporters late Monday evening.

This unusual May activity follows a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, linked to a long cloud trough from southeast Uttar Pradesh to Tamil Nadu. Srinagar too logged heavy rain on Monday, while temperatures plunged across the north.

Bihar Toll Rises to 20

In Bihar, the storms turned deadly, with initial reports indicating at least 20 deaths from lightning strikes amid heavy rain and thunderstorms across six districts. The IMD has sounded an orange alert for heavy downpours in 18 districts today, urging residents to stay indoors during peak hours.

Damage assessments are ongoing, with flooded roads and power outages reported from Patna to rural belts. Sources familiar with the relief efforts said state disaster teams were deployed overnight.

Haryana Winds Uproot 15,000 Trees

Haryana bore the brunt of ferocious winds, uprooting over 15,000 trees and causing chaos in urban and rural areas alike. Strong gusts accompanying the rain felled power lines and blocked highways, particularly in Gurugram and Faridabad.

No immediate fatalities were reported, but emergency services worked through the night to clear debris. The mercury dipped sharply, offering rare relief from the heat.

Rajasthan Sees 8°C Drop

Rajasthan, at the heart of the system, recorded an 8°C temperature plunge on Monday due to storms, rain, and hail. Jaipur's maximum hovered below 35°C, a stark contrast to recent highs, with similar drops in Alwar, Sikar, and Pilani.

The IMD issued a yellow alert for 11 districts on May 5 and 6, while Jaisalmer sweltered with the state's highest reading. "This is unprecedented for early May," a Jaipur weather station source noted.

Hill States Chill in May

Unseasonal cold gripped Himachal Pradesh, where Solan hit a record low of 4.8°C for May on Monday—beating the 2021 mark of 9.4°C. Tabo logged 3.5°C and Kukumseri 4.1°C, prompting warnings for high-altitude trekkers.

In Uttarakhand, rain is forecast across all districts today, with heavy falls and possible snowfall in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Hilly and plain areas alike face flash flood risks.

The nationwide shift has brought some respite from heatwaves but raised concerns over agriculture and urban infrastructure. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh's rain alert districts are watching nervously, as untimely showers could hit ripening crops. Officials advise avoiding open fields and monitoring local updates.

With the system persisting, more disruptions loom through mid-week. The rain alert for Madhya Pradesh districts underscores the IMD's call for vigilance amid this erratic pre-monsoon spell.

Evening Weather Turns Violent

Rewa witnessed a sudden and intense change in weather on Monday evening. Around 4:20 PM, the skies darkened over the low-lying terai areas, including Bhatwa and Lalgaon. Within minutes, heavy rain accompanied by hailstones lashed the region.

The downpour caught residents off guard. Many were seen rushing for cover as the hail blanketed roads and open fields in white. Just an hour before the event, the afternoon had been unusually hot and humid.

Farmers Assess Crop Damage

The hailstorm has raised immediate concerns for the ongoing Rabi harvest. Standing crops of wheat, chickpea (chana), and various vegetables are currently in the fields. Local farmers said the hail could cause significant yield loss, especially in villages where the storm was most severe.

“We were expecting some pre-summer rain, but not this. The ice was marble-sized in many places,” said a farmer from Bhatwa. Officials said they are waiting for detailed reports before assessing compensation.

Relief From Scorching Heat

Despite the potential crop damage, the sudden weather offered one clear relief. Temperatures dropped sharply after the hailstorm. For residents dealing with an early summer heat spike over the past week, the evening turned surprisingly pleasant.

In Rewa town, many stepped out to enjoy the cooler breeze. Children were seen collecting hailstones in parts of Lalgaon, though parents were urged to stay cautious near waterlogged roads.

Administration on Alert

Local authorities have asked patwaris and agriculture department teams to remain on alert. Farmers have been advised to document any damage and inform the nearest revenue office as soon as possible.

An official from the Rewa collector’s office said that while no casualties or major structural damage have been reported, standing crops in low-lying pockets remain vulnerable.

“We are monitoring the situation. If farmers submit their loss reports quickly, the assessment can begin within a week,” the official added.

What’s Next for Weather in Rewa?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that similar isolated thundershowers could occur in parts of northeastern Madhya Pradesh over the next 24 hours. However, widespread rain is unlikely. For now, Rewa’s residents are enjoying a brief break from the heat, even as farmers count their losses.

Over the next few days, the district administration is likely to conduct spot surveys in the worst-hit villages. Whether the government will offer immediate input subsidy for damaged crops will depend on those findings.

Madhya Pradesh continues to witness stormy weather with rain alert issued for 27 districts as strong winds and thundershowers bring relief from early summer heat but also cause damage to stored crops in several areas.

Widespread Alert for Sunday

The India Meteorological Department’s Bhopal centre has issued a rain alert for 27 districts of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. These include Gwalior, Sheopur, Shivpuri, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, Singrauli, Maihar, Katni, Umaria, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Jabalpur, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara and Pandhurna. Winds are expected to blow at 30-50 km per hour accompanied by thunderstorms in many places.

Officials said the unsettled weather is likely to persist across the state till May 6 due to the influence of two troughs.

Damage to Warehouses and Crops

On Saturday, several areas experienced the impact of strong winds and rain. In Raisen district’s Chhuchar village, the tin roof of Harshiv warehouse was blown away. The warehouse, with a capacity of 5,000 metric tonnes, had government-procured moong dal stored inside. Local reports indicate significant damage to the stored produce.

In Sehore’s Boradi area, harvested crops loaded in tractor-trolleys at the Vinayak warehouse got wet due to sudden rain following gusty winds. Similar incidents were reported from Ichhawar, Jhalaki and Bhaukhedi. Farmers and officials rushed to cover the produce, but some losses could not be avoided.

Incidents in Balaghat and Other Areas

Balaghat witnessed intense activity around 1:30 pm when a tree inside the municipal council premises fell due to strong winds, damaging a motorcycle parked beneath it. In Sehore’s Shyampur Road area near Jakhakhedi, another tree came down on the road. Biaora saw flex boards of shops flying off, while Pipariya recorded dusty winds followed by light showers in the evening.

Bhopal itself received rainfall in the afternoon on Saturday, bringing a quick drop in temperatures in Raisen and Sehore regions.

Unusual May Weather Pattern

This year, May has begun with rain and thunderstorms, quite different from the usual intense heatwave trend seen in the state. Meteorologists attribute the current spell to active western disturbances and trough formations that are pulling moisture into the region.

The weather department has cautioned people about lightning and advised farmers to secure harvested crops and farm equipment properly.

Temperature and Rain Trends in Major Cities

Bhopal has a history of sharp swings in May. The all-time high of 46.7°C was recorded in 2016, yet the city has also seen good rainfall every year between 2014 and 2023, with 2021 and 2023 receiving over two inches.

Indore crossed 46°C in 1994 and saw nearly three inches of rain in May 2023. The city frequently experiences cloudy conditions and scattered showers during the month.

Gwalior, known for extreme summer temperatures, has crossed 47°C and even touched 48.3°C in the past. It recorded its highest one-day May rainfall of over 41 mm in 1953 and received 2.5 inches in 2023.

Jabalpur has seen temperatures above 45°C multiple times and consistent May rainfall over the past decade, including more than three inches in 2021.

Ujjain too follows a similar pattern of heat interspersed with rain, with a high of 46°C recorded in 2010.

Public Response and Precautions

Residents in affected districts welcomed the rain as a respite from the early summer heat, though farmers expressed concern over damage to stored produce at government procurement centres. Local authorities have asked people to avoid venturing out during thunderstorms and to stay away from weak structures and trees.

With the forecast indicating continued unsettled conditions for the next few days, officials are monitoring the situation closely. Farmers have been advised to complete harvesting and storage work carefully before the next spell of rain. The weather department is expected to issue updated bulletins daily.

The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Umaria, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Agar Malwa, Ratlam, Ujjain, Jhabua, Dhar and Alirajpur.

Officials said most remaining districts would also continue to witness hot and dry weather, with maximum temperatures staying above 40 degrees Celsius through the weekend.

According to weather officials, the current rise in temperature is consistent with the seasonal pattern typically seen in the second half of April, when heat intensifies sharply across Madhya Pradesh.

Rain Likely Next Week

The weather department has forecast a possible change in conditions by the end of April. As per reports, parts of Gwalior, Chambal, Jabalpur and Sagar divisions may receive light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning on April 27 and 28.

Meteorologists attributed the expected change to an active western disturbance, which may bring temporary relief from prevailing heatwave conditions in parts of the state.

Heat Advisory Issued

The IMD has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during afternoon hours. Officials have asked people to stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothing and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat.

Children, elderly residents and those with pre-existing health vulnerabilities have been identified as the most at-risk groups during the ongoing MP heatwave spell.

Public Concern Grows

The continuing heatwave, combined with schools remaining open, has turned the situation into a wider public interest story across Madhya Pradesh. With temperatures expected to stay elevated for the next two days, pressure may build on district administrations to review school operations and outdoor schedules.
