A 30-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Bilaspur's Manwa village. Police have launched an investigation to determine the reason behind the incident.

A 30-year-old married woman was found hanging in her room in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. The incident was reported from Manwa village under the Pachpedi police station limits.

According to police officials, the deceased has been identified as Gangotri Patel, wife of Mahesh Patel. She was a homemaker and lived with her family in the village. Initial inquiries suggest that she completed her household chores on Saturday night before retiring to her room.

Body Found In Morning

Family members discovered the woman hanging from a saree noose inside her room when they woke up the following morning. The sight shocked the household, and local police were informed immediately.

Officials said the body was found suspended from the makeshift noose, indicating a case of suicide. However, investigators have not yet established what may have led the woman to take the extreme step.

Police Reach Spot

After receiving information about the incident, a team from Pachpedi police station reached the village and carried out a preliminary inspection of the scene. The body was taken into custody and a panchnama was prepared as part of the legal procedure.

The remains were later sent for post-mortem examination. Following the completion of formalities, the body was handed over to the family members.

Cause Yet To Emerge

Police officials said no immediate reason behind the suspected suicide has come to light so far. Investigators are examining all possible angles and are trying to piece together the events leading up to the incident.

Sources familiar with the inquiry said officers are looking into the woman's recent interactions and family circumstances, though nothing conclusive has emerged at this stage.

Statements Being Recorded

As part of the investigation, police are questioning relatives, neighbours and other people known to the deceased. Statements from both her maternal and marital families are also being recorded.

Officials said these interactions may help establish whether the woman had been facing any personal, social or domestic issues before her death.

Village Residents Shocked

The incident has left residents of Manwa village shocked. Locals said the woman was known in the area, and news of her death spread quickly through the village on Sunday morning.

Police have urged people not to speculate about the reasons behind the death until the investigation is completed. Authorities said the exact cause will become clearer only after all evidence and statements are examined.

Investigation Continues

For now, the case remains under investigation, with police awaiting further findings from the inquiry. The Bilaspur suicide case has once again highlighted the importance of understanding the factors that may lead to such incidents and the need for thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.

Officials said further action, if required, will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday indicated that a cabinet expansion could be on the horizon, while reviewing administrative and development initiatives during the ongoing Su-Shasan Tihar programme in Bilaspur. Responding to questions regarding the long-discussed cabinet expansion, the Chief Minister remarked, “Watch what happens next,” a statement that has triggered renewed political speculation in the state.

The Chief Minister visited Bilaspur to assess governance initiatives, inspect development projects, and interact with district officials. During the visit, he also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several public development works.

Brief Review Meeting

Although a detailed review session had been scheduled, the Chief Minister's meeting with divisional officials lasted only around ten minutes due to his commitment to attend another programme in Raipur.

During the review, he directed officials from Bilaspur, Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, Mungeli, Sakti, and Sarangarh-Bilaigarh districts to ensure speedy disposal of revenue-related matters. He emphasised that cases involving mutation, land partition, demarcation, and other land records should not remain pending for years.

According to officials, the Chief Minister instructed departments to regularly monitor pending files and ensure that citizens do not face unnecessary delays in obtaining administrative services.

Focus on Education City

One of the key highlights of the visit was the inspection of the upcoming Education City project at Madhuban in Dayalband. The project is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹120 crore and is expected to become a major educational hub in the region.

District authorities informed the Chief Minister that approximately 26 percent of the construction work has already been completed. Spread across 13 acres, the project will include a 500-seat Nalanda campus, a digital library, hostel facilities, coaching centres, skill development infrastructure, and modern academic resources.

Officials said the integrated campus aims to provide coaching, training, and study facilities for students preparing for competitive examinations under one roof.

Administrative Priorities

Apart from revenue administration, the Chief Minister reviewed preparations for the upcoming kharif season. He directed officials to ensure adequate availability of fertilisers and seeds for farmers across the region.

The administration was also asked to strengthen preparedness for monsoon-related challenges, including drinking water supply, healthcare services, and emergency response arrangements.

Political Remarks

During interactions with the media, Sai criticised the opposition Congress over recent protests and political developments. Referring to allegations raised by opposition leaders, he stated that the ruling government remains focused on governance and development.

On issues related to examination irregularities, the Chief Minister reiterated that any proven wrongdoing would be dealt with strictly. He said investigations are conducted whenever complaints arise and that action is taken against those found guilty.

By-Election Results

The Chief Minister also welcomed the outcome of recent urban local body by-elections. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party had secured victories in three Nagar Panchayat chairperson elections and credited party workers and public representatives for the results.

At the same time, he acknowledged that opposition candidates had also won in some municipal wards, describing the outcome as part of the democratic process.

Multiple districts report heated exchanges between politicians and officials, while ACB nabs government staff accepting bribes during public grievance camps.

What was meant to be a showcase of governance efficiency turned chaotic across several Chhattisgarh districts on Friday, as video clips of heated arguments between politicians and officials went viral, even as the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) carried out multiple arrests for bribery during the state’s ‘Sushasan Tihar’ (Good Governance Festival) camps.

The camps, set up to resolve public grievances, instead became flashpoints in Durg, Korba, Bilaspur, and Raigarh. Officials and public representatives clashed openly in front of villagers, while at least two government employees were caught red-handed accepting illegal payments.

Face-off in Thanod village

In Durg district’s Thanod village, BJP leader Puran Deshmukh, who serves as the Durg rural district general secretary, engaged in a sharp exchange with Janpad CEO Rupesh Pandey. The argument, captured on video, shows the CEO pointing a finger at the BJP leader and saying, “Do whatever you want to do.”

According to local sources, Deshmukh was upset over the release of funds for a community hall. He alleged that funds were released during the current sarpanch’s tenure despite a stay order he had obtained earlier. The CEO countered that the stay had already been lifted. The entire episode unfolded in the presence of Durg rural MLA Lalit Chandrakar.

ACB arrests clerk in Korba

At a separate camp in Korba district’s Tumaan area under Podi Uproda block, ACB teams arrested assistant grade-2 official Pradeep Mishra for allegedly demanding and accepting a ₹40,000 bribe. The complainant, a retired teacher named Amritlal Baghel, had visited the camp to get entries made in his GPF passbook.

Baghel approached the Bilaspur ACB after Mishra allegedly demanded the money. A team led by DSP Ajit Singh laid a trap and caught the official while accepting the cash. Officials said Mishra had previous complaints of financial irregularities against him. The ACB is now probing if other complainants at the camp were also extorted.

Patwari suspended over viral video

A separate incident in Korba’s Pasan area led to the suspension of patwari Vinod Agrawal after a video surfaced showing him counting currency notes under his office table. Locals alleged the patwari routinely demanded bribes – up to ₹5,000 for forest patta processing and up to ₹10,000 for mutation of land after death.

One villager secretly filmed the patwari demanding money for a ‘fauti namantaran’ (mutation after death). Following the video’s circulation, the SDM ordered Agrawal’s suspension. He also held additional charge of the Sirri area.

Congress leader, MLA clash in Bilaspur

In Bilaspur’s Godhi village under Bilha block, a dispute broke out between local Congress leader Rajendra Shukla and BJP MLA Dharam Lal Kaushik. Shukla, along with supporters, was raising slogans such as “Stop this farce in the name of Sushasan Tihar” when the situation escalated.

Shukla later told reporters that there was no direct confrontation with the MLA. “When camps are organised to solve problems, everyone has the right to question officials. When I started asking about unresolved issues, someone tried to snatch the mic,” he said.

MLA Kaushik, however, claimed Shukla was “attacking officers” when he arrived. “I told him to stay calm. Everyone is here to solve public problems under the Chief Minister’s leadership. There is no need to disrupt official work,” Kaushik said, adding that Shukla eventually left with his supporters.

Clerk held in Raigarh with ₹60,000

In Raigarh district, ACB arrested clerk Tularam Patel at the Chhal tehsil office for allegedly demanding ₹1 lakh to correct errors in a B-1 land record. Acting on a complaint by Bhanupratap Patel, the bureau laid a trap and caught Patel accepting ₹60,000 on Friday. Investigations are ongoing to determine if others were involved.

Head constable faces bribery rap

In a related development from Bilaspur, a head constable was suspended after a video emerged showing him demanding ₹10,000 to release three accused. The officer was heard saying in the clip, “I cannot let go of three people for just ₹5,000. Arrange ₹10,000 for all three.” The police department has initiated disciplinary proceedings.

The multiple incidents have raised questions about the effectiveness of the month-long ‘Sushasan Tihar’, which the state government has been promoting as a citizen-centric initiative. Officials say they are reviewing the complaints and further action is expected.

Video went viral; traffic police registered case under Motor Vehicles Act and will seize the vehicle.

In a reckless display caught on camera, a young woman performed a ramp walk in front of a moving car, sprayed champagne, and climbed onto the vehicle's roof to strike poses on the Bilaspur-Korba National Highway. The video, which has gone viral on social media, has prompted swift action by traffic police under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The incident occurred late at night near the Koni-Turkadih bypass under the Turkadih overbridge in the Koni police station area. According to initial reports, the woman opened a champagne bottle, letting the spray fly while walking ahead of the slow-moving luxury car. She then climbed onto the roof and posed for a reel, endangering herself and other motorists.

Viral reel triggers police probe

The car, bearing registration number CG0-10-CD-141, was identified through its number plate after the video spread rapidly online. Traffic police swung into action and registered a case against the vehicle owner under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, including Section 135.

Traffic ASP Ramgopal Kariyare confirmed that the vehicle will be seized. A letter will also be sent to the Regional Transport Office recommending cancellation of the driving licence. “Such stunts on a busy national highway can easily cause serious accidents,” he said, warning that emerging from the sunroof or performing dangerous acts distracts other drivers.

Public safety concerns rise

Highways around Bilaspur have seen several similar incidents in recent months. Just weeks ago, a woman was seen dancing through the sunroof of a moving BMW on the Raipur-Bilaspur highway. In that case too, the vehicle was seized after the video went viral.

In October 2025, a convoy of luxury cars created a jam on the Bilaspur-Masturi highway while youths shot reels. Another incident involved influential youths parking expensive cars in the middle of the Bilaspur-Raipur highway for photoshoots. Police had to intervene and arrest those involved.

High Court warning goes unheeded

The Chhattisgarh High Court has previously expressed strong displeasure over such dangerous stunts for social media fame. Despite directives to the administration for strict action, incidents continue to surface, raising questions about enforcement on national highways.

Local commuters have expressed anger over the trend. “These videos look glamorous but one wrong move can lead to a major tragedy,” said a regular driver on the Bilaspur-Korba route. The highway sees heavy traffic, including goods vehicles and passenger buses, making such acts even more hazardous during night hours.

Police appeal for responsible behaviour

Bilaspur traffic police have appealed to citizens, especially youngsters, not to misuse public roads for content creation. “Social media popularity should not come at the cost of lives,” an officer said. Authorities have warned that more such cases will result in strict legal action, including vehicle impounding and licence suspension.

The latest video has once again highlighted the growing craze for creating reels without regard for safety or law. Police are investigating the identity of the woman and the driver. Further action is expected once the owner of the vehicle appears before authorities.

As the reel continues to circulate widely, it has sparked fresh debate on the need for stronger checks on highway stunts in Chhattisgarh. Officials say awareness drives will be intensified in the coming days.

Rupnarayan Sinha, Chairman of the Chhattisgarh Yoga Commission and a senior BJP leader holding cabinet minister rank, died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday. His sudden demise during a party training camp has left the BJP organisation in the state in shock.

Sinha, who was actively participating in the two-day district-level training programme of the BJP in Tifra, Bilaspur, complained of uneasiness on the second day of the event. He was immediately rushed to the state-run SIMS hospital in Bilaspur, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Sudden Health Deterioration at Training Camp

The incident occurred on Tuesday during the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Training Mahabhiyan 2026. Sinha, who was also the in-charge of the training camp, had been present since its inauguration on Monday, May 25. Several senior leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao, MP Rupakumari Chaudhary, and MLA Amar Agrawal, attended the programme.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Sinha’s health deteriorated during the proceedings on the second day. Party workers and officials present at the venue acted swiftly and shifted him to the hospital, but he could not be revived.

Last Rites Performed in Raipur

The mortal remains of Rupnarayan Sinha were brought to his residence in Kabir Nagar, Raipur, where the last rites were performed on Wednesday. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai visited the residence to pay his respects and offered floral tributes. Several other leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, Minister Kedar Kashyap, MLA Purandar Mishra, and BJP state president Kiran Singh Dev, also reached the residence to offer condolences.

A large number of party workers and local residents gathered at the residence, creating an atmosphere of mourning.

Long Association with BJP and Yoga Movement

Rupnarayan Sinha had been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party for a long time. He held various organisational responsibilities within the party and was known for his active involvement in social service and yoga promotion activities. His appointment as Chairman of the Chhattisgarh Yoga Commission reflected his deep commitment to promoting yoga and wellness in the state. He was conferred the status of a cabinet minister in the Sai government.

Senior BJP leaders described his passing as an irreparable loss. Bilha MLA Dharamlal Kaushik, a prominent party figure, said that Sinha had served the party with dedication in different capacities and played a key role in strengthening the organisation at the grassroots level.

Leaders Express Grief

The news of Sinha’s death spread quickly, prompting an outpouring of condolences from across the political spectrum. Many leaders recalled his simplicity and dedication towards party work and social causes.

Family members and party colleagues were seen consoling each other at both the hospital in Bilaspur and the residence in Raipur. Photographs from the training camp showing Sinha in apparently good health have been widely circulated on social media, adding to the sense of suddenness surrounding the tragedy.

Impact on Local BJP Unit

The training camp in Tifra was an important organisational exercise for the BJP ahead of future political battles. Sinha’s active role in it underlined his importance within the party structure in Bilaspur district. His untimely death has temporarily disrupted the momentum of the ongoing programme, with many participants expressing deep sorrow.

As news of the cardiac arrest reached senior leadership, several ministers and MLAs made their way to Bilaspur to stand with the family. The swift response from the administration and party workers was visible as the body was transported to Raipur for final rites.

Rupnarayan Sinha’s contribution to the promotion of yoga in Chhattisgarh and his long service to the BJP will be remembered by party workers and yoga enthusiasts across the state. His demise has come as a significant blow to both the party and the yoga movement he championed.

As the state BJP unit comes to terms with this loss, many are reflecting on the importance of health awareness, especially among senior leaders engaged in demanding political and organisational work.

The Chhattisgarh education department has taken strict action against alleged forced sale practices by a private school in Bilaspur after a uniform and book shop operating near the campus was sealed during an inspection drive.

The action came after parents complained that they were being compelled to purchase school uniforms, books and study material only from a designated shop linked to the school management. Following the complaint, the district administration ordered an immediate inquiry into the matter. Officials from the education department conducted a surprise inspection on Friday and sealed the shop after allegedly finding school-tagged uniforms and books during the raid.

Parents Raise Complaints

According to officials, several parents approached the administration claiming that the school management was pressuring them to buy uniforms and educational material from a particular outlet located near the school premises. Parents alleged that they were not allowed to purchase uniforms or books from open markets despite high prices being charged at the designated shop.

The matter eventually reached Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal, who directed the district education department to conduct an immediate investigation into the allegations. The issue quickly turned into a major Public Interest Story in Bilaspur as parents demanded stricter monitoring of private schools operating in the district.

Raid Conducted By Officials

Following the collector’s instructions, District Education Officer Vijay Kumar Tande formed a special team to investigate the complaint. The inspection team included senior education department officials and administrative representatives. During the raid, the team inspected Sai Enterprises, a shop operating opposite the school campus in Vyapar Vihar area. Officials claimed they found uniforms carrying the school’s official tags along with books reportedly prescribed for students of the institution. After preliminary verification, the shop was sealed by the administration.

School Gets Notice

Following the action, the education department issued a formal notice to the school management seeking clarification regarding the alleged link with the shop. Officials stated that government guidelines clearly prohibit private schools from forcing parents to buy uniforms, books or stationery from any particular vendor. Authorities also warned that strict action could be initiated against institutions violating educational norms and commercial conduct rules. The department said further action would depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.

Network Under Scanner

During the inspection, officials reportedly called the shop operator for questioning. According to sources, the operator claimed the store had already been transferred to a person allegedly connected with the school administration. Documents examined during the inquiry reportedly supported parts of the claim, raising suspicion about indirect involvement of individuals associated with the institution. Investigators are now examining financial transactions and operational links connected to the shop. Officials believe the matter may involve a wider commercial arrangement designed to generate profits through compulsory purchases by parents.

Principal Denies Allegations

Reacting to the action, school principal Jitendra Hundal denied any direct involvement of the school in operating the sealed shop. He stated that the store was located outside the official school premises and claimed several other commercial establishments also functioned in the same area. The principal further said the school management had no role in deciding what products were sold in nearby shops. However, education department officials maintained that the investigation would continue based on available records and complaints received from parents.

Strict Rules In Place

Authorities said the state government has already issued clear regulations regarding sale of school books, uniforms and stationery items. Under existing norms, private schools cannot force parents to buy material from specific vendors. Schools are also not permitted to change uniforms frequently.

Officials said school uniforms generally cannot be changed before three years unless special approval is granted. The government has also mandated that only NCERT and SCERT books are allowed for Classes 1 to 8 in recognised institutions. Apart from this, annual fee hikes beyond prescribed limits are also subject to regulation.

Hundreds Of Schools Under Watch

Bilaspur district reportedly has around 562 private schools functioning under different boards and educational societies.v To monitor irregularities, the government has constituted district-level monitoring committees headed by collectors and district education officers.

Despite the regulations, complaints regarding arbitrary fee collection and forced purchases from selected vendors continue to emerge from different districts. Officials admitted that this was among the first major cases in Bilaspur where a shop was sealed in connection with alleged violations involving private school operations.

Bilaspur Gets 24 New High-Tech Dial-112 Emergency Response Vehicles to Strengthen Police Services

Modern CCTV-equipped emergency fleet to improve response time in accidents, crime, and public safety situations across the district

Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh has taken a major step toward strengthening its emergency response system with the induction of 24 new high-tech Dial-112 vehicles. These vehicles were officially flagged off during a ceremony attended by public representatives and senior administrative and police officials. The initiative aims to improve response time and enhance police efficiency in handling emergencies such as road accidents, crimes, traffic congestion, fire incidents, and women’s safety issues.

The newly introduced fleet is equipped with advanced technology, including live CCTV cameras, modern communication systems, and updated safety equipment. These features are designed to ensure that police teams can reach incident locations quickly while maintaining real-time monitoring and coordination with control rooms. Authorities believe this upgrade will significantly improve the quality and speed of emergency services in the district.

The flag-off ceremony was held at the Bilasagudi premises, where the vehicles were formally dedicated to public service. During the event, several dignitaries including elected representatives and senior officials expressed optimism about the impact of the new system. They highlighted that the addition of these vehicles will reduce delays in emergency response and improve law enforcement efficiency across both urban and rural areas.

According to police officials, the new Dial-112 vehicles will be deployed across major police stations and outposts in Bilaspur district. Key stations such as Kota, Masturi, Civil Line, Sirgitti, Sarkanda, and Koni have been allocated two vehicles each. This distribution strategy is intended to ensure balanced coverage and faster response times in high-demand areas.

The Dial-112 service has already been recognized as a crucial emergency helpline in Chhattisgarh, integrating police, fire, and ambulance services under a single platform. With the expansion of this fleet, authorities aim to make the system more responsive and efficient. Officials stated that the upgraded vehicles will help reduce response time significantly, especially in remote and rural locations where delays are more common.

One of the most important features of the new vehicles is the integration of live CCTV surveillance systems. These cameras will allow real-time monitoring of incidents, enabling command centers to assess situations instantly and deploy additional support if required. The communication systems installed in the vehicles will ensure uninterrupted coordination between field officers and control rooms.

Police officials emphasized that these technological enhancements will help tackle a wide range of situations more effectively. Whether it is road accidents, theft, robbery, smuggling, or emergencies involving women and children, the Dial-112 teams will now be better equipped to respond promptly. Fire emergencies and disaster situations are also expected to be handled more efficiently with the improved setup.

Senior officials noted that the older fleet of Dial-112 vehicles had become outdated and was affecting operational efficiency. The introduction of new vehicles addresses this gap and brings a much-needed upgrade to emergency services in the district. Authorities also confirmed that similar upgrades have been initiated at the state level, with hundreds of new vehicles being deployed across Chhattisgarh.

Public representatives present at the event praised the initiative, calling it a major step toward improving public safety. They highlighted that Dial-112 has become a trusted service among citizens, ensuring quick assistance during emergencies. Lawmakers emphasized that timely police intervention plays a critical role in maintaining law and order and building public confidence.

Senior police officials also highlighted that the service now covers all 33 districts of the state. The integration of fire and ambulance services with police response units has made the system more comprehensive and efficient. With the addition of the new fleet in Bilaspur, authorities expect a noticeable improvement in emergency handling capabilities.

The officials further stated that continuous efforts are being made to modernize police infrastructure and adopt advanced technologies. Training programs for personnel operating these vehicles are also being conducted to ensure effective utilization of the new systems. The goal is to create a faster, smarter, and more responsive emergency network that can serve citizens efficiently at all times.

Residents of Bilaspur are expected to benefit significantly from this development. Faster response times, better coordination, and improved surveillance capabilities are likely to enhance public safety across the district. Authorities believe that this initiative will strengthen trust between the police and the community while ensuring a more secure environment.

Students Protest In Bilaspur Over Alleged NEET Paper Leak

AIDSO submits memorandum to Bilaspur Collector, demands fair probe and stronger safeguards in national medical entrance examination system.

Student organisation AIDSO staged a protest in Bilaspur on Monday against the alleged NEET paper leak controversy and raised serious concerns over the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the examination system. Members of the organisation also submitted a memorandum to the district collector demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.

The protest was organised to highlight concerns regarding repeated allegations linked to medical entrance examinations and the impact such controversies have on students preparing for competitive exams. The issue quickly became part of the Latest News Today discussions due to growing concerns over the credibility of national-level entrance tests.

Students Raise Concerns

Addressing the protest, AIDSO representative Suraj Sahu said lakhs of students across the country spend years preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) with the dream of becoming doctors. He stated that incidents such as paper leaks and examination irregularities directly affect students’ careers and mental well-being.

According to the organisation, repeated controversies related to NEET examinations have weakened public trust in the examination system. Protesters alleged that irregularities in competitive exams are creating uncertainty among students and parents. Members of the student organisation also criticised what they described as the increasing commercialisation of medical education and coaching culture in the country.

Questions Over Examination System

AIDSO alleged that the expansion of expensive private coaching systems and privatisation in education has turned competitive examinations into a business-driven process. The organisation claimed that recurring complaints related to question paper leaks, result discrepancies and examination management indicate deeper problems within the current system. Students participating in the demonstration carried placards and raised slogans demanding accountability from authorities responsible for conducting national-level examinations. The protest remained peaceful, and police personnel were deployed near the protest site to maintain law and order during the demonstration.

Demand For Fair Probe

The student organisation demanded a judicially monitored and impartial investigation into the alleged NEET paper leak matter. Protesters urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure strict legal action against individuals involved in any irregularities connected to the examination process.

According to AIDSO representatives, maintaining the credibility of medical entrance examinations is essential because these tests determine the future of thousands of students every year. The organisation warned that continued controversies surrounding examinations could seriously damage confidence in the country’s education system. Protesters appealed to the government to introduce stronger safeguards and improve transparency in examination procedures. The issue has emerged as an important Public Interest Story because of its impact on students, parents and educational institutions across India.

Rechecking System Demand

Apart from raising concerns over the NEET issue, AIDSO also demanded restoration of the rechecking or re-evaluation system at Bilaspur University. Suraj Sahu stated that students dissatisfied with their examination marks should have the right to seek re-evaluation of answer sheets. The organisation argued that a transparent rechecking system would help students address genuine concerns related to evaluation errors and ensure fairness in academic assessment. Student representatives also highlighted alleged irregularities linked to the semester system and called for reforms to address academic issues faced by university students.

Growing Examination Concerns

Competitive examinations in India have increasingly come under scrutiny due to allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in recent years. Such incidents have triggered protests in several states and intensified debates over examination security and institutional accountability. Education experts believe that maintaining trust in entrance examinations is essential because they play a major role in determining admission to professional courses and higher education institutions.

Authorities have repeatedly assured stricter monitoring and technological safeguards for examination systems, but student groups continue to demand stronger action and transparent investigations whenever irregularities surface. The Bilaspur protest reflected wider concerns among students regarding fairness, accountability and transparency in national examinations.

Following the demonstration, AIDSO members submitted their memorandum to the Bilaspur Collector’s office outlining their demands. The memorandum called for strict action against those responsible for examination irregularities and implementation of a secure and transparent examination mechanism.

A newly constructed road worth ₹1.40 crore in Bilaspur has come under controversy after the surface reportedly started peeling off within days of construction. The incident was reported from Masturi block, where villagers alleged that poor-quality materials were used during the construction of the one-kilometre road connecting Amakoni village to Bahtara.

Videos recorded by local residents and public representatives showing the road’s bitumen layer coming off by hand have gone viral on social media, raising serious questions over the quality of work and monitoring by the concerned department. According to villagers, the road construction work began on January 15 under a contract awarded by the Public Works Department (PWD) to contractor Atul Shukla. Residents alleged that instead of using murum as the base material, ordinary soil was laid beneath the road surface, making the structure weak even before completion.

Villagers Raise Objections

Local residents claimed that the newly built road started deteriorating almost immediately after the top layer was laid. In several places, gravel and bitumen reportedly began separating from the surface under minor pressure.

Villagers said the condition of the road clearly indicated poor construction standards and negligence during execution. They alleged that despite the project involving a large public fund, basic quality norms were ignored. The viral videos showed people removing portions of the road surface by hand, further intensifying public anger over the issue.

Allegations Against Contractor

District Panchayat representative Radha Khilawan Patel accused the contractor and officials of serious irregularities in the construction process. According to the allegations, substandard material was used in the road project with the alleged involvement of officials responsible for supervision and quality checks.

Patel claimed the road was not even fully completed when signs of damage started appearing across multiple sections. Local representatives argued that if the condition of the road has deteriorated before the arrival of monsoon, the structure may not survive heavy rainfall.

Questions Over Quality Standards

Residents alleged that the prescribed engineering standards for road construction were not followed properly. They claimed that murum, which is generally used as a strong base layer in rural road construction, was replaced with ordinary soil in several stretches.

Experts say the use of unsuitable base material can significantly weaken road durability, particularly during rainy seasons when water absorption damages the foundation. Locals fear the road could collapse or sink during the first heavy rainfall if immediate repairs and technical evaluation are not conducted.

Public Representatives Visit Site

After the issue gained attention, several local public representatives visited the construction site to inspect the road condition. Janpad members, local BJP leaders, panchayat representatives and village officials reportedly examined the damaged sections and expressed concern over the visible deterioration.

Representatives demanded a technical quality inspection of the entire project and questioned how the road passed departmental monitoring despite apparent defects. The leaders also visited the Collector’s office and submitted a written complaint seeking immediate intervention in the matter.

Complaint Submitted To Collector

Villagers and public representatives have filed a complaint with Bilaspur Collector Sanjay Agrawal demanding an impartial investigation into the road construction project. The complaint alleged misuse of government funds and negligence in supervision by the construction agency and related officials.

Residents demanded strict action against those found responsible for poor-quality work and urged authorities to reconstruct the road using proper materials and approved standards. People in the area said repeated complaints regarding development works often remain ignored until such incidents become public through videos and protests.

Threat Of Protest

Local representatives warned that villagers may launch protests and road blockades if corrective action is not taken soon. Masturi Janpad member representative Menka Sumit Jagat said poor-quality construction would not be accepted under any circumstances.

She demanded a full technical audit of the project and reconstruction of the damaged road to ensure public safety and proper utilisation of government funds. Villagers said the issue reflects a larger concern regarding transparency and accountability in rural infrastructure projects.

Department Under Pressure

The controversy has intensified pressure on the Public Works Department and district administration to respond quickly. Officials have yet to issue a detailed public statement regarding the allegations, but sources indicated that an inspection of the road may be conducted soon. The incident has also triggered discussions on the monitoring system used for public infrastructure projects funded through government schemes. Experts noted that poor-quality road construction not only wastes public money but also creates long-term safety and connectivity issues for rural communities.

Public Concern Growing

The road controversy has become a major Public Interest Story in Chhattisgarh, with residents demanding stricter monitoring of construction work in villages and semi-rural regions. Local citizens said taxpayers’ money should be used responsibly and infrastructure projects must follow quality guidelines without compromise. The viral videos have further increased scrutiny of development works being carried out in rural areas under government-funded schemes. As pressure mounts on authorities, villagers are now waiting for administrative action and a formal investigation into the alleged irregularities in the ₹1.40 crore road project in Bilaspur.

Chhattisgarh Braces for Strong Winds, Thunderstorms and Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of strong winds reaching 40-50 km per hour in the next 24 hours across several parts of Chhattisgarh, accompanied by the likelihood of thunderstorms and rain. The unsettled weather is expected to continue in some form for the next five days, though its impact on daytime temperatures will remain limited.

Commuters in Bilaspur were caught off guard as a dust storm picked up suddenly, forcing many to stop their two-wheelers and seek shelter. Similar scenes of gusty winds and dark clouds have been reported from other pockets in the state in recent days.

Gusty Winds and Thunder Likely

According to the Raipur Met Centre, isolated to scattered thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely over the state. While widespread heavy rain is not forecast, brief but intense spells accompanied by thunder and lightning cannot be ruled out, especially during evening and night hours.

Officials have advised residents, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, to secure loose objects, avoid open fields during storms, and stay away from tall trees and electric poles.

Temperatures to Rise Gradually

Despite the stormy activity, the heat is far from over. The maximum temperature is expected to climb by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The upward trend has already begun, with a rise of about 2 degrees recorded in the past 24 hours. Rajnandgaon remained the hottest place in the state, touching 41 degrees Celsius recently.

Raipur is likely to see a maximum of around 40 degrees Celsius and a minimum near 25 degrees on Friday. The state capital may remain under cloudy skies with a chance of light showers or thundershowers towards evening or late night.

Recent Rainfall and Ground Reality

Some parts of the state have already received relief from scattered showers. Charama recorded 30 mm of rainfall while Gariaband received 10 mm in the last spell. However, these amounts have not been enough to significantly ease the prevailing hot and dry conditions.

Pendra Road recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 20.6 degrees Celsius, offering some respite in the northern parts of the state during nights.

Public Caution and Precautions

Local administration in vulnerable districts has been put on alert. Farmers have been asked to complete harvesting or take protective measures for standing crops. Schools in some areas have been advised to monitor afternoon weather before sending children home.

Traffic movement on highways could be affected due to reduced visibility during dust storms or heavy downpours. Power outages are also possible in areas prone to strong winds and lightning.

IMD Outlook for Next Few Days

The weather department expects the current spell of pre-monsoon activity to persist intermittently. While the intensity may vary from place to place, the combination of dust storms, gusty winds, and thundershowers is likely to dominate the weather narrative across Chhattisgarh in the short term.

As summer temperatures hover in the high 30s and low 40s, even short spells of rain and wind provide temporary relief to residents battling the heat. However, the gradual rise in mercury means discomfort levels are set to increase again once this stormy phase subsides.

Motorists and outdoor workers have been urged to remain vigilant. Authorities have also appealed to people not to ignore warnings issued through local media and official channels.

The situation is being monitored closely, with updated forecasts expected to be issued regularly as the system evolves.

BILASPUR: Tensions flared at a private hospital in Bilaspur on Saturday after a 36-year-old police constable, admitted for a routine kidney stone procedure, passed away following the surgery. The family of the deceased has alleged gross medical negligence, leading to high drama and protests on the hospital premises, while the management maintains the death was caused by a sudden cardiac arrest.

The deceased, identified as Satyakumar Patle, a resident of Eramshahi village in the Masturi area, was posted as a constable at the Sarkanda police station. The incident occurred at Shri Ram Care Hospital located in the Nehru Nagar locality under the Civil Lines police jurisdiction.

Sudden health complications post-surgery

According to sources, Patle complained of severe abdominal pain on April 26, after which he approached the hospital for a check-up. Following diagnostic tests, doctors confirmed the presence of a stone and advised immediate surgery. His associates stated that a surgery package was finalized for ₹40,000.

Patle was admitted on April 28, and the procedure was carried out the following day. Initially, the doctors informed the family that the surgery was successful and the patient was recovering well. Reports indicate that Patle was conscious and communicating with his relatives throughout Thursday and Friday morning.

Family alleges delayed response

The situation took a turn for the worse on Friday evening when Patle began experiencing breathing difficulties and persistent coughing. Ashish, a friend of the deceased, alleged that the hospital staff was alerted immediately, but no specialist doctor attended to him for several hours.

"He was fine after the operation. When the coughing started, we repeatedly informed the nursing staff, but there was a significant delay in treatment. His condition deteriorated because they ignored him for four to five hours," Ashish claimed. By the time medical intervention intensified, Patle had to be shifted to a ventilator.

Clashes and heavy police deployment

As news of the constable's death spread on Saturday afternoon, a large number of relatives and villagers gathered at the hospital. Protesters accused the hospital management and the operating surgeons of negligence, demanding an immediate FIR against those responsible.

The protest prompted a heavy police deployment to prevent any untoward incident. Civil Lines TI SR Sahu arrived at the spot, followed by senior officials including Additional SP (City) Pankaj Patel and ASP (Rural) Madhulika Singh. The officers spent several hours pacifying the agitated family, assuring them of a fair investigation based on the post-mortem findings.

Hospital cites cardiac arrest

Refuting the allegations of medical negligence, the hospital management issued a statement claiming that the surgical procedure was standard and successful. They stated that the patient’s clinical parameters were stable post-op, but he suffered a sudden, massive heart attack on Friday evening.

Despite being put on life support and receiving intensive care, he could not be revived. The management also reportedly told the family at one point that an infection had reached the kidneys, necessitating dialysis, though the primary cause of death is being maintained as cardiac failure.

Police await post-mortem report

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday. Police officials have stated that the exact cause of death will only be established through the forensic report.

"The family has submitted a complaint alleging negligence. We have registered the matter and are waiting for the autopsy results. Based on the medical report and expert opinion, further legal action will be initiated," said TI SR Sahu. The local police department has expressed grief over the loss of their colleague, while the family remains adamant about a high-level probe into the private facility's conduct.

Enforcement Directorate seizes 17 kg gold, diamond jewellery and cash from premises linked to absconding accused in major liquor policy case

In a major overnight operation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive searches at multiple locations in Bilaspur and Durg in connection with the ongoing probe into the Chhattisgarh liquor scam. Teams spent nearly 22 hours at the residence and business establishments of Vivek Agrawal, brother of absconding accused Vikas Agrawal alias Subbu, recovering significant quantities of gold, diamond jewellery and cash, according to initial reports from the ground.

The action, which began in the early hours of Thursday, targeted properties linked to individuals allegedly connected with the multi-crore liquor syndicate. While the ED is yet to issue an official statement on the exact recoveries, sources familiar with the development indicated that valuables worth several crores were taken into possession from Vivek Agrawal’s premises in Bilaspur.

Intense scrutiny at Magneto Mall residence

ED officials reached Vivek Agrawal’s house located at Magneto Mall in Bilaspur early Thursday morning. Security was tightened immediately, with CRPF personnel deployed and all entry points sealed. Teams conducted a thorough examination of documents, electronic devices and other materials inside the property, with the operation continuing late into the night.

A parallel team simultaneously visited his jewellery shop, Shriram Jewellers in Sadar Bazaar. Officers examined stock registers, purchase-sale records and investment-related papers at the outlet. The prolonged presence of ED vehicles and personnel drew attention in the area, though locals remained largely unaware of the full scope initially.

Link to absconding accused Vikas Agrawal alias Subbu

The raids are primarily focused on tracing the financial trail of Vikas Agrawal, also known as Subbu, who is considered a close associate of jailed businessman Anwar Dhebar. Anwar Dhebar is one of the key figures named in the liquor scam probe. Vikas Agrawal has been absconding for nearly four years and has been declared a proclaimed offender by the court.

Investigators believe Vikas and his brother Vivek were involved in facilitating the collection of alleged commissions from liquor vends. Sources said the agency is examining whether unaccounted assets and investments in the jewellery business were used to park or launder proceeds linked to the scam. ED teams are now scrutinising benami properties and recent high-value transactions in the brothers’ names.

Action in Durg targets BJP leader and builder

Simultaneously, ED teams carried out searches at the residence and office of Chaturbhuj Rathi, a prominent businessman and active BJP leader in Durg. Rathi is associated with several firms, including Amar Infra (Amar Buildcon), Amar Mahabir Coal Mines, Amar Private Limited and Tar Carpet Private Limited. These companies are reportedly involved in road and bridge construction, shopping mall projects and coal mining.

Officials examined financial records and investment documents of nearly half a dozen firms linked to him. Rathi had been in the news earlier when the Income Tax department conducted searches during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speculation about his possible contest in the 2023 assembly polls had also surfaced earlier.

In Bhilai, teams also visited the residence and factory of Govind Mandal in E-Block, Vitthal Puram. Mandal later claimed that the team had reached his premises by mistake and was actually looking for another location. The searches lasted several hours.

Background of Chhattisgarh liquor scam

The ED’s investigation stems from a larger liquor policy scam allegedly committed during the previous Bhupesh Baghel government. The agency had registered a case based on an FIR filed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. The probe points to a syndicate involving certain IAS officers, including former Excise Department Managing Director A.P. Tripathi, and businessmen like Anwar Dhebar.

According to preliminary findings, the racket allegedly operated through multiple routes: collecting commissions from distilleries (initially ₹75 per case, later raised), circulating spurious liquor with fake holograms through government outlets, and suppressing actual sales records in 15 selected districts. Over 40 lakh cases were reportedly sold without proper duty payment, causing losses running into thousands of crores to the state exchequer.

The syndicate allegedly used a network of shop operators, excise officials and transporters to move unaccounted liquor bearing duplicate holograms. MRP was reportedly manipulated, and extra payments were made to distillery owners to offset commission costs through over-billing and tender adjustments.

Public interest and ongoing probe

These fresh raids come amid heightened scrutiny of money laundering angles in various scams reported from the state. The recovery of substantial gold and diamond jewellery has added a new dimension to the financial investigation. Locals in Bilaspur’s commercial areas expressed surprise at the scale of the operation, though many refrained from commenting openly.

ED officials are now focusing on connecting the dots between the absconding accused, his family’s business interests and possible proceeds of crime. Further summons and analysis of seized material are expected in the coming days.

The agency is also examining similar financial links in other locations as the probe widens. Officials indicated that more actions cannot be ruled out if additional evidence surfaces.

As the investigation progresses, questions are being raised about the depth of the network that allegedly operated for years. Authorities have maintained a tight lid on specifics, citing the sensitive nature of the case.
